One of the top 5-10 art museums I have ever visited. I love museums that focus on a single artist. Amazing collection and the audio tour really brought it all to life. You could really see Van Gogh's development and his intense, meticulous focus, obsession with his art. He was amazingly productive in his short career.

Get there early too miss the big crowds.

Book online and reserve a time to visit. Was not a Van Gogh fan before visiting, I now understand his work much more than before. Tortured soul with an incredible talent. Fantastic museum!

Well managed and maintained museum. Even the newbies can understand and appreciate the legend of Van Gogh after visiting this place. Had a great time there. The museum is located in one of the busiest place like Rijk museum and vodelpark so you can plan a great day with your friends and family as well. There are several food outlets in close vicinity and a great place to capture beautiful pictures. Must visit place for all tourists.

A well presented very large collection toon of Van Gogh, complemented by paintings of other artists in support of the narrative. Mid-January it was not too crowded and OK; if they do not limit the number of entrances per hour in summer, it must be terrible.

If you are an art lover or if you know before hand who Vincent Van Gogh is, then you should not miss this. Entire collection is dedicated for his artwork. It will be crowded and hence suggest you to prebook your tickets. This is a part of the museums package.

This place is truly amazing. It can get crowded at times, make sure you stick with your group and don't try to get in too early. Getting a glimpse into the creative process and seeing artists that influenced Van Gogh and artists in turn influenced by Van Gogh was a great touch and walking chronologically through his life in art was enlightening.

Obviously it is great to see works of Van Gogh, but it was overwhelming for our teenagers to wade through all of the paintings that inspired Van Gogh. We were a little confused by the layout and where to go next. The gift shop was really good. We had to have an appointment to enter, but it was then an easy process and covered by our I Amsterdam pass.

Awesome. I went for a late Friday opening so it was not too crowded. It's not all van gogh- plenty of variety here. Everything is organized chronologically, so the famous stuff tends to be on the upper floors. Only memorable paintings not here that I can think of are starry night and night Cafe, both in the US.

Well worth the trip. Amazing works and your get a real sense of his life, his friends and family, his struggles, and the whole Zeitgeist of the time.
I suppose yrmv, as the temporary exhibits when I went were fabulous.
And if you go, the small, modern art museum next door is fabulous.

We came to museum but the stuff is told us that tickets are available only online. And no tickets for more than week. It's not private museum, for national museum it is very poor experience.

A very impressive entrance and shop. The paintings are laid out logically and follow a coherent narrative. It was very busy when I was there but not so much as to spoil the experience.

Amazing museum. I'm a huge fan of Van Gogh, his paintings and and his trouble life. The museum is really nice very organized, they are always changing the paintings so you can see Van Gogh paintings you haven't seen in the first visit. Also is in a really nice location so you can always go to some others museums after.

Beautiful museum. We started on the top floor and made our way down to the first. Make sure to purchase your tickets in advance online so you don't have to wait in the long line to get in. There are many other museums nearby, so make a day of it.

Excellent museum for Art Lovers. For newbies I would recomment using an audio guide which I regret not using as I realised it would have added immense value to the experience of the greatest niche painter I've seen... Van Gogh and wiggly brush strokes!

btw nicely laid out museum

Buy your tickets online if you wanna save time! Audio tour had some really cool insight. Loved that they had so many letters available to read or listen too. Great insight on his opinions. Showing work from other artists inspired by or working with Van Gogh was a nice touch too!

The painter of Sunflowers

The painter of Sunflowers
Nowadays Vincent van Gogh is known as the man who painted Sunflowers. He painted sunflowers as no one before him had ever done.

Vincent didn't always paint in the bright he's now so famous for. So, how did he come to create his masterpiece?

From a single sunflower to a vase full of them
Vincent began painting a single sunflower in a vegetable garden, and ended up with a work that became world-famous. There were just two years in between the two works, during which he underwent rapid artistic development.

We decided to buy the tickets online, so we could skip the queue, great idea! You can download your ticket on your phone and show them to the entrance, nice and easy. If you are in Amsterdam and you have interest in art you need to visit the museum. Unfortunately some of the painting were not available as they were working on them.

Beautiful building, good collection of paintings. Not only Van Gogh's but also others. Third floor is all about letters that the painter wrote to other people when he was in the mental facility. Famous paintings inside and biography of Van Gogh. Free cloak room service. Two shops inside. The price for entrance it's quite high compared to other museums and they don't do student discount.

On weekends it is overcrowded, so be prepared and try to stay calm looking at the paintings from behind 10 other people (+10 others looking from behind your back).
Otherwise a great experience. Just let yourself some time to truly enjoy the magic.

Not only is this the best collection of Van Gogh art in the world, but it was also incredibly informative. Definitely get the audio guide. It goes into great detail on both his work, as well as the man himself.

worth it just to see his self portraits. Very wholesome experience. I had no idea how the museum came to be, but it's a beautiful story... I'll let you find out for yourself. Go, go, go!!!

When we were there they had an exhibition called in the picture which had self portraits from Van Gogh and other artists from his time and others who were inspired from his paintings. That exhibition was not crowded at all.
The other exhibition about Van Gogh and his art was very crowded and don't expect to really enjoy the paintings without being bumped into by people trying to get a selfie with the paintings.
We did enjoy the exhibition though and the overall experience was positive, a crowd is expected at popular exhibitions like this. It really is a must in Amsterdam if you are a fan of Van Gogh and his work.

Get your tickets in advance. It s easy and quick online. Otherwise the queue can be 1-3 hours long easily. The entrance and the exterior architecture is quite interesting. The museum is set up really nicely and it s as if you re walking through Van Gogh s life with a timeline. The paintings are beautiful of course and can spend 2-3 hours here seeing everything without rushing too much. There should be a distinction between the permanent collection and the special exhibition. This wasn t highlighted clearly to us. But all in all a great experience and highly recommend to any art lover

Really good installation piece on the lower ground floor. The story of his life and mental challenges was interesting and provided insight into his approach to his art work. There is also a section that shows you what sunflowers would have looked like when first painted. The colours were much more vivid.

Beautiful modern museum with a great collection of Van Gogh pieces. They do a great job explaining Vincent's life and works, even his relationships with contemporaries and family. Lines can be long, but they go faster than you think. It tends to be better at the end of the day.

How can you visit the amazing city of Amsterdam and not immerse yourself in culture and art, especially here at this Museum. We took the fast track and electronic guide. Museum is beautifully laid out and tree excebition was brilliant. Lot of people so be patient, leary so much about this true talent.

The museum is always busy. Reserve a time online beforehand, don't even try to wake up early to go to the line. It's always long.

The space itself is great. It will be packed, but the rooms are so big it's actually fairly navigable. And the secondary exhibit was pretty cool when we were there. Don't ask me what it was. Good gift shop as well.

Vincent's story in general was super sad, so be prepared for that, if you've just eaten a brownie and are prone to react emotionally to that sort of thing.

I love this museum so much. I and my best friend were here in 4 hours and we would like to stay here more. However we had to go because the museum was going to be closed. We were waiting 3 hours in rain to get in. So that you should book the tickets in internet before you want to go here. Every thing is expensive here. One ticket costs approximately 30

I am not a fan of art ( I am history buff) but my wife is. So we decided to go here during our Amsterdam visit. If you are an art enthusiast and are in Amsterdam, it goes without saying that you can t miss this museum. It houses Van Gogh s famous paintings like the sunflowers, the bedroom, yellow house, and his self-portraits to name a few. Don t look put for Starry nights, it s not here. It is MoMA, NY. (and we missed that when we visited MoMA cause it was in some other exhibition, talk about luck, haan)

1-1.5 hours is recommended to explore this place. And more if you are keen to see every tiny detail. I don t have much knowledge so we finished in 1.5 hours. Anyway, this is not very huge, so you can finish. You will get free Wi-Fi but what s the use if you can t post pictures (taking pictures is not allowed, some corners are there where you can take pics with sunflower painting) also there are glass protection on painting, so its kind of hindrance. It was irritating me when the reflection of lights falls on glass and painting is not visible clearly.

This is usually busy and online reservation of tickets is a must or some kiosks in the city. Rijksmuseum is just next to it, so plan your visit accordingly.

Outstanding. Pre-booked tickets on line +audio guide. If arriving by train in Amsterdam, catch either number 2 or 12 tram. 9 stops and you arrive at VGM. Jackets and bags have to be checked in, at the same time collect you audio guide, easy to use and full of interesting information. Best to arrive early and miss most of the crowds. Take your time and enjoy the wonderful works of art on display.

Sorry...Can't take pictures in this museum. However the images will take your breath away. 3 levels of art with stairs as well as an elevator to help you get around. Oh, BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE!! If you don't, like me...you will have to wait in line for an hour or so. They don't sell tickets at the museum. You must walk around the corner to The Museum Gift Shop. Get there early. It's in the Museum sector which incorporates a beautiful park so waiting in line wasn't so bad.

Excellent collection and organized in the perfect Dutch way.
I found, in mid July, that it was possible to get online tickets just the day before for 4:45pm, which means you don't have bad crowds, you can enter at 4:30pm, and have good time for a visit before 7pm.

A nice art gallery that is laid out well to accommodate many visitors at the same time. I would highly recommend that you book tickets in advance as the queues can be quite long. You can use a museumkaart if you have one and kids get in for free. I visited with my 11 and 8 year old kids and we all had a good time. There is also a quiz for kids to do whilst they're walking around, which gets them more engaged.

Wow! Such a great museum. Make sure to get the multimedia device as you tour the museum. Also, remember that they do not allow photos in here. (Picture for this review is from the Rijks Museum where they do allow photos).

Wonderful museum. Some tips: you can enter it with prior appointment (e.g. via internet), bear in mind you can go inside 15min prior to your schedule time. Since visitors enter the museum on exact given time, they usually start from the ground floor and then there are a long queues there. Advice: start from upper floors and leave the lower level for later, it will be less crowded. Disadvantage: you won't see exhibit in chronological order. If coming by car, look for cheaper parking as the ones around are pretty expensive. Taking photos inside is not allowed.

A great museum in Amsterdam. It has a nice flow, taking you through the painter's life. You can clearly see the progression of his work. The museum offers audio guides, but it also has small explanations accompanying some of the most important paintings. It also has Vincent's letters and other personal items, and painting done by friends and contemporary artists.

It's worth a visit!

I went to Amsterdam to see Vincent. Go early , because by noon, it was packed with tours. They had a wonderful collection of his works PLUS personal items !! They had several of my favorites paintings like the Potato Eaters , & Apple Blossom. As you move through his works, you can see his style growing & becoming more confident. How sad some loser killed him,.. ( Loving Vincent)
May Vincent rest in peace , and paint with the angels .
