One of my favorite museums. Very well organized. You can't get lost, as it really feels like there is a specific way to get around the museum to see everything. Does not only exhibit Van Gogh art. Very thorough history and story telling of the artist.

They said that the museum closes at 7 but we were there at 5 and they closed as soon as we arrived, some people happened to go in before us which made us wonder if they just stopped getting extra people or what. It's a shame.

We visited the museum in the late evening of a Friday. The exhibited items are great. The museum was crowded with visitors. Rooms were dark and looked stylish. But with all the descriptions printed next to each painting in white paint and in very small font size (not larger than font 16!), you had to stand very close to each painting to read the details - very tiring and one could hardly enjoy the visit with this room setting.

The audioguide here was very worth it. The narration of Van Gogh's thought process and various motifs present throughout his progression as an artist was very educational and added a lot of value to the museum's experience.

Very crowded on the day Tuesday we visited. Cruise ships leave off and pickup on Sunday so the days either side are heavily trafficked due to people coming early or extending stays to Europe. Go early to avoid the congestion. Get the multi media console. It s worth the few euros. Beautiful museum and easy to trek throughout.

Well worth visiting while in Amsterdam. Make sure you pre-book as they keep the amount of people to quite a reasonable level. Was busy for an art gallery but you were able to go through at your own pace and see everything easily. A few of the more well known pieces would have a small crowd but it would only take a minute for it to clear.
We got the audio guide for a few extra euros, which was well worth it. Learnt a lot more about Van Gogh and his work that what was on display.

Absolutely fascinating museum that worthwhile going if in Amsterdam. It s spacious, modern and with the best pieces of work from Vincent Van Gogh and his contemporary painters. The Sunflowers and the Potatoes Eaters are amazing. Many well known paintings are exposed there. Van Gogh s sketchbooks are beautiful as well as some of his correspondance with Theo.
The gifts shop is excellent yet quite pricey but a wee treat was on the cards.

A beautiful museum in an excellent location. The permanent collection is large and well organized on multiple floors. Also check for the special exhibitions. Plan on spending several hours if you have the time. There was free coat and bag check. Strongly!! recommend advance booking of tickets.
There are.elevators for those that cannot climb stairs and I noted a number of people in wheelchairs.
You will greatly benefit from renting one of the personal audio guides. Van Gogh's life and work had many twists and turns and the audio guide breathes life into what is presented. A must see.

Be sure to grab the audio tour, well worth the money. It gives you a much more in depth story behind each painting, also has a guided 45 min tour if you're in a hurry. You can use your own headphones too.

Exceptional! Book online to get in quick, even if it's a euro more. We were there mid March and had to wait outside with temps of 0! We had bought before and had an allotted time but still had to wait a bit to get in, but the people waiting to buy tickets looked miserable and frozen! Very well laid out and with stairs and elevator everything was easy access. The works there are incredible, awe inspiring. Get the guide for five euros. There was so much I didn't know about him. It's really quite a sad story. There's also lots of background information on key works so well worth the cash. The building is wonderful. The Dutch use of light is ingenious. You're allowed to get pretty close, close enough to see his brush strokes. I visited this museum for the first time 33 years ago as a backpacker and now as a 50 something year old I have certainly appreciated it more. Must see!

What an experience! The museum is well organised. You can experience or view the paintings with or without audio media.(at a fee) A lot off effort was made to make your experience a reality it is if you meet him walk a path with him during his life. What a master he was. A great art icon. I would love to go to MoMA to complete my journey with Vincent.
Free Wifi, easily reachable from the metro. Buy tickets in advance. Visit as early as possible in the morning.

The museum is amazing. It is very large with a lot of masterpieces. You need at least 2 hours to just have a brief look at all paintings.
Those who have babies don't forget the buggy because it is really exhausting to carry your baby whole the time.
Taking photos is not allowed but some ingenious people make sketches on their notebooks. For taking memento photos there is an interesting automatic camera on the first floor which instantly sends your photos to your email. There are also some shops where you can buy some souvenirs.

Pretty expensive compared to other art museums, but if you're a fan of Van Gogh, then it is a must. They do a good job of making a story of his life and work... Go in the morning to avoid the crowds and really, there is no need for the extra 5 for the audioguide if you know how to read :)

Previous reservation was needed and the information provided on their website was also quite confusing. I recommend to book your visit long in advance as it can be time consuming, bit worth the visit!

Very good museum, very interesting to learn about Vincent by reading everything too. Can get quite busy so sometimes hard to see everything as well as you'd like but you just have to be patient.

Only marking 4 stars are I feel it is quite expensive especially as they charge 5 euros each more just for an audio guide. Still worth a visit though and the new Japan section is great.

Definitely must see place!
You can buy tickets online in just few clicks so you don t have to wait in line!
You need about two hours to see everything! Very interactive place! You have a small shop with great accessories to take a memory from the museum with you!

The museum is alright, but do not come even a minute early because you will apparently be "too early" for your slot.

It wasn't great when I was rejected entry for the 3rd time that day because I reached at 2:40pm when my slot was supposed to be at 2:45pm, and I had return to the end of the queue!

Yes, it is very pretty but seriously you can't enjoy it with that amount of people. Is a waste of money and time, don't go, do something else. I used to have very high expectations about this museum, the info, tour, etc. Is just not worth it. And the amount of people is unbearable and unbelievable

Such a great experience. The collections are extensive and the information that is available with them is fantastic. I learnt so much and the gift shop was excellent too. Unfortunately, no pictures are allowed but this helps make your experience more special. The museum is easy to get to, on several bus and tram routes.

A truly wonderful experience. A must.

If you only visit or attend one thing in Amsterdam, this has got to be it.
I learned so much about Vincent. The word genius must have been drawn up for him.

A great museum in Amsterdam. It has a nice flow, taking you through the painter's life. You can clearly see the progression of his work. The museum offers audio guides, but it also has small explanations accompanying some of the most important paintings. It also has Vincent's letters and other personal items, and painting done by friends and contemporary artists.

The Van Gogh museum was our number one place to visit once we'd decided to visit Amsterdam.
I love Van Gogh's paintings and the tragedy he suffered for his work.
You get a real sense of his love for his Brother Theo and his friendship with Gauguin.
The audio tour is definitely recommend as it brings the paintings to life.
We spent nearly 4 hours in the museum but the time just flew by.

The building itself is a beautiful piece of modern architecture, as for the artwork, the collection was great and the museum does well giving the detailed history of the artist. The only negative was the large number of tourists, even though we had to buy time slot based tickets.

Amazing pieces of art work. It is a pity the starry night isn't there, but the sunflowers and others are just as amazing. I would advice you book tickets online so you can get the specific time you want. Otherwise 100% suggest it.

What an amazing gallery of art, well not only art, it also tells the story of Vincent van Gogh. There's 3 levels containing his work with an additional Sunflower exhibition that shows of his piece 'Sunflowers' and explains how he came to paint it. A must see if you're going to Amsterdam! Buy your tickets online as you cannot get them at the door. There's two gift shops inside and a cafe also!

Interesting and inspiring museum. Plesant mood and not so crowded.
However if you want to admire famous Sunflowers you could be disappointed. Those paintings are located in a few different museums around the World and none of them is here.

Incredible art museum. You can really get a strong grasp of what Van Gogh would have been like; his passions, his techniques and his quest to grow as a painter. You simply must get the guided audio tour to fully appreiciate this wonderful museum.

How can I give this less than a perfect review. Amazing building in a beautiful green setting. The collection is magnificent and being a Van Gogh fan, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Excellent facilities including food and a great shop with beautiful posters. If you are travelling and don t want to carry them with you, they ll even ship them to your home address for a modest fee. Wonderful!

Queuing system was shocking, for such a famous museum you would expect them to be more organised and clearer about the queues. Ended up queuing for two hours, which I am ok with it if I was well informed but it wasnt the case. The museum was very nice, but they really need to improve their queuing system. I would advise everyone to pre-book!

Nice museum. It's big and looks nice but not really interesting for the people who dont loves art. I al not an art lover so I can't say you the artistic side of the place but as a guy who've been in many museums it was pretty ordinary. Not so interactive or fun. Just art (which is the purpose of a museum I guess haha)

A few tips/notes:

A few tips/notes:
-Pay for the 5 interactive guide if you want to learn anything about the art or the artist.
-The museum closes at 5 PM, so book a time earlier in the day. I arrived at 3 PM, but that wasn t enough time to enjoy the full museum.
-You must check in your coat/bag at bag check (free!), but expect this to take at least 20 minutes once you ve entered the museum.
-The museum gift shop closes when the museum closes, so don t expect to buy any gifts there after 5 PM.

Museum is a great place to visit for art lovers and gogh's fans. There's not just painting by van gogh but also his colleague artists painting are there. Descriptions with some of the paintings reveals the back story for that painting, which helps viewer to understand van gogh's life and thinking process.
Also for something that's almost extinct, the whole floor dedicated to his handwriting letter writing is really interesting.
The queue and crowd is bit of an issue but the management is really well, there no hassle. I'd recommend to buy tickets online though. Saves the trouble and time of standing is ticket queue.
Entrance fee is 17euros.
I would recommend this place anyone who is visiting Amsterdam.

This museum was ok, and would be great if you are a hard core Van Gogh fanatic. I give 4 stars because on the first floor you encounter the vast majority of Van Gogh's famous self portraits all together, and the rest of the museum is kind of a let down after seeing that. Of course, "Starry Night" is not here either (it's in NY), so don't be fooled thinking there is something great up on the 4th floor. I love museums and art but tbh was bored here.

Super security to get in. But it's all the lovely paintings. Don't get why we can't take pictures. Very inspiring. A bit unhappy that the audio guide does not go in order of the paintings. You have to search for the paintings by number. Important to get the audio guide. Worth the extra you pay. Adds to the experience. Lovely gift shop and cafe. Unfortunately for me, I am extremely short sighted so some of the text is too small- applies to quite a number of museums. Very busy over the summer so couldn't be lost in sunflowers and some of the other less famous but beautiful pieces. Enjoyed it immensely!

Everything is perfect about this museum. Easily reachable from the Amsterdam Central(tram 2), the building itself and of course the exhibition. The exhibition is nicely arranged and together with the audio tour builds up the story perfectly. I really enjoyed the visit.

Fantastic museum that is easy to navigate through. Even if you don't get an audio guide you can still follow all the details of Van Gogh's life with descriptions about every phase and artwork in Dutch and English. The museum also has interesting interactive screens with additional information and images. I suggest that you book either an early or late slot, as the museum can get really busy. Especially from 11:00. And remember that you are not allowed to take photos of any of the artworks.

This is a wonderful museum dedicated to one of the greatest avant-garde painters. Everything is well organized - from tickets and time slots (I advise you to buy them online in advance) to the life and art presentation of Van Gogh. You will discover an intimate portrait of a genius and tender nature and don't forget to check the audio guide (it's well done with accompanying music that seems to be the perfect match for the paintings).

By far one of the most amazing art experiences I have had the pleasure of enjoying. We booked our tickets (have to book a time slot) 3 weeks in advance and sprung for the earliest available time - and I will say it is well worth it! The queue was long by the time the museum opened so I suggest getting there 20-30 minutes before your time slot. We had a lot of the museum to ourselves (+maybe 30 other people) for the first half hour. We also rented the interactive audio tour which was VERY much worth the small fee if you are interested in actually learning about Van Gogh and his art. Honestly, any art lover should make a trip to Amsterdam if not just to see this amazing collection of work. Do note that the Starry Night is at the MoMA in NYC but all of his other great work is here.

The best museum I ever visited. Exhibitions are presented chronologically, which makes it damn easy to study. Personally I recommend to take audioguide, many useful information out there.

"Art gallery" in simple words.

"Art gallery" in simple words.
but to elaborate it explains whole story of Van Gogh and his family backgrounds, including his journey to the world and meeting variety of people where he discover his thoughts and explained using colors.

He himself passed his entire life to express the feelings, nature and culture on paintings and gave the world amazing gift of art... it can be seen from his painting that how to use colors to show the emotions also.
A wonderful collection of paintings can spend around 3-4 hours to explore properly. I like it too much.

If you're a Van Gogh fan then this is a must see.

If you're a Van Gogh fan then this is a must see.

All manner of objects and stories from his history is on display. Although I don't consider myself in that fan club I enjoyed reading and following his history as he evolved as an artist and the museum makes that easy to do by seperating it into years.

The art work was quite varied and included works from his friends and relatives as well.

Expect to be asked to cloak your backpacks. Retrieving them was quick and easy.

I bought my ticket at the vending machine on the day that is outside of the building next door.
