very interesting, also I would recommend getting the audio guide too!
very interesting, also I would recommend getting the audio guide too!
An amazing experience, using the audio guide was a good choice.. you get to enjoy all his special paintings in a different way and her heat how he described them.
The atmosphere around the museum was perfect in every possible way.
Very nice Muesum. Easy to navigate. Multimedia tour adds a nice element. A bit warm inside, and very crowded.
Fantastic! Make sure to save half day for visiting, and the souvenirs are satisfied.
A grand exposition of the life and work of Van Gogh. If you like art it's a must visit in Amsterdam. The museum itself is organized chronologically for the most part. They also have an annex where they hold other unrelated expositions.
I love Van Gogh so of course I would love this museum. It's full of his paintings and lots of history about his life and art career. It's fairly big so expect to spend a few hours here. I spent almost three hours and still had to rush through the last gallery because it was close to closing time. A word of advice tickets sell out fast, it's great to buy online or ahead of time. I showed up not knowing this around noon (12pm) and they were sold out for the day, I had to buy tickets for the next day at 4pm... It's okay because Anne Frank's house/ museum was close by 20-30 walk so I just went there. So but tickets online and ahead of time they will sell out. Nonetheless it was a marvelous museum. I loved it.
Nice museum with a massive collection of van Gogh.
Pretty cool to see all his work.
Seriously one of the best museum I've ever visited. Clear explanation about Van Gogh and his art. Had the chance to visit the exhibition about van Gogh and Japan, which was extremely informative on his study of Japanese ukiyoe.
Well organized. Nice audio system. Clean. Good paintings. Would have rated 5 if the paintings were better.
Absolutely worth the trip. And definitely get the multimedia audio guide. It really enhances the visit. You don t have to listen to it all, or follow a set route around the museum so it s very flexible. I would visit again if I came back to Amsterdam.
Great place to get mesmerised. Nice cafeteria. Usually busy. Book tickets online to avoid the que. Wide wariety of products when it comes to buy souvenirs.
I was here pre covid, just forgot to write a review. Very beautiful but packed (not sure if that will be a problem moving forward)
I love Van Gogh and the collection contains also friends works and a huge percent of his letters.
An incredible story of an incredible artist, laid out between 3 stories.
My boyfriend and I visited this museum while staying in Amsterdam. We spent 2 hours here easily. We each paid for the audio guide and learned a lot about Van Gogh. Highly recommend checking this out if you re visiting this beautiful city!
Amazing Museum. Great Audio guides. The best in the city without any doubt.
It is the best museum ever! Very moving, I love it! The way the curator did the exhibition was amazing everything flows smoothly. It is one of my favorite museums. It really gives a good honest look at Vincent Van Gogh, and brings humanity at the idea of him. After seeing the exhibit I understand him better as person and not just as a great artist, which is something amazing to reconcile Van Gogh as an artist, as Van Gogh as a brother, son, and friend. I do recommend to go to the Van Goghs ' museum.
Had a good time there. Perfectly organized timeline of events. Must visit if you're visiting AMS.
It is a marvelous museum that every art lover should aim to see in their life time. Among around 2,100 paintings and drawings of Vincent Van Gogh, this museum has the largest share. In addition, it has perhaps the entire collection of Van Gogh's letters. The museum started its journey through the efforts of Van Gogh's family members, in particular the son of Van Gogh's brother. The museum is well equipped. The ticket costs 19 euro and the audio guide takes euro 4.50 in December 2019. There was not much crowd. I was also fortunate to view an exhibition of Jean-Francoise Millet, a versatile painter Van Gogh liked. The cafeteria and the souvenir shop are also fine.
A very nice museum indeed with a large collection of paintings from Van Gogh but also from others who were affected by or who affected him. Also, the temporary exhibition on Dreams was really interesting. However, given the fact that the place is really crowded it would help if all the painting descriptions next to the items are of bigger font, so it's easier to read from a distance.
Audio highlights tour was good, painting are eye opening. Loved the evolution of Van Gogh's art and the story the museum takes you on. Most the security guards are nice, because there was not many people visiting in Covid times, they allow you to take one of two photos.
Great museum, displaying not just Van Gogh's Art but also his inspiration and those who he inspired. The ticket price was somewhat expensive coming in at 19 per adult. Be warned, you have to book your tickets previously on line, it is quite busy if you go during the day, and it is unlikely you will get a ticket for that day.
Beautifully curated museum. It's always so busy, but delightful all the same!
Too much to see it all. Totally enjoyable. Worth it.....
New purpose built building is an improvement on how it was 25 years ago when I visited before, the flow around the all exhibits was much easier.
Had a wonderful experience in visiting Van Gogh Meuseum. It takes 1.30 - 2 hours if one sees paintings , read the story behind each painting and enjoys it. If you read the story behind each art work and feel the realism of it then you will More
While the museum itself was absolutely magical and super informative, the staff was a good deal more inattentive then we would have liked.
It is clearly stated that photography is prohibited, but everywhere you look, rude tourists are constantly getting in the way of the art to take photos and selfies while the staff does nothing to prevent this.
It's not that the staff is unaware, just uninterested in limiting the inconsiderate behavior of the patrons.
Very annoying
Great collection of art here. No photos policy but that didnt stop myself and many others during my visit, just remember not to use flash or take selfies!
If you're a fan of Van Gogh you simply MUST visit here. It was amazing to see his work in person, definitely worth the entry fee. They have free cloakroom too. The (free) dreams exhibition I didn't find in keeping with the artists style but it was good to learn more about him. Main downside is how busy it gets (i went on a Friday evening), but that's understandable.
One of the most popular places in amsterdam .. if you want to go there you have to order your ticket 1 months before you go .. and by the way. Its amazing from inside
Literally the best art museum I have ever been. It's next to impossible to describe how stunning the art works are. Definitely, a must visit in Amsterdam.
About the tickets: the first time I was there I didn't bought them in advance, came in the middle of a work day, stayed in line for 15 minutes and bought them. The second time I bought tickets online stand in line for 15 minutes to exchange them in ticket office. So...
Missing one of my favourites but otherwise excellent
This place is simply something you have to do. Van Gogh's life is worth exploring, however keep these points in mind before visiting:
- Book online, otherwise the queues and process will overshadow the experience.
- If you have a booked ticket, go as early as possible! The entry and passage through the exhibits will be super smooth
- Get a photo at the Sunflowers replica for the blind, a really awesome 3D sensory piece to enable the blind to appreciate the painting. And you can claim you touched a national treasure :)
Very well done museum. A great collection which tells the story of Van Gogh's life, his hard work and his legacy. Highly recommend the audio guide. For children under 10 there is a scavenger hunt that is fun.
Missing some of the big hitters, but there is lots to appreciate from Vincent and other artists.
It's a landmark and a must visit when in Amsterdam. Apart from the brilliant collection on display, the museum also focuses on the life of the great Artist. As a visitor you get a glimpse inside the head of the maverick painter and his troubled life. The arrangement of the artwork helps understand how Van Gogh developed his distinctive style. Also, the Cafe near the entrance has surprisingly good coffee and muffins.
As international as the museum wants to be, it doesn't offer lockers or cloak service for visitors traveling with small briefcase with wheels. Therefore, cannot visit the museum! I am sure it is a beautiful museum with great collection. Maybe better luck next time when they have enough budget to offer this kind of service for visitors.
Very beautiful museum! a deep dive into Van Gogh's world!
Wow, amazing collection and very explanatory of the life of this famed artist. Be prepared to not see the art, but get a sense of his life and state of mind throughout his career.
Marvelous place to visit. Enjoyed seeing the different phases of the artist's life.
My Amsterdam highlight! The audio guide 100% worth it and adds to the experience through the interactive displays and Information about who Van Gogh was. The staff on the day was very accommodating and helpful, thank u!
It has all the modern art pictures, i dint enjoy it as such...can be good for people with an artistic insight.
Totally Worth it! You learn about the artist and his life and from which artists he was influenced! So like this you see also other paintings of famous artists! Pre book the tickets from the internet and you will not wait in line!
Well of course it's cool to see those pictures but the guide is really expensive and the concept not really convincing... Like cool to see it once but not one of those places you just want go several times to
The highlight art piece of Van Gogh is not show here.
We travelled from England to see the fantastic work that Van Gogh created. A little disappointed that Starry night wasn't to be seen (they're in New York at time of posting this) but did get to see many of his self portraits and the sunflowers. The gallery is in several floors and laid out very beautifully. If you do visit now do go to see the dreams section on the very bottom floor and that is a beautiful trip being inside Vincent's mind.
I would recommend anyone who's coming over to Amsterdam, a Vincent fan or not, to visit this museum and gallery.
Wonderful experience. Recommend the multimedia experience. Narrative installation "Van Gogh Dreams" was beautiful and you can take photographs inside this temporary exhibition which is available till 13 January 2019.
Some of the biggest works of Van Gogh are there. Not everyone of them like the campus "Starry Night".
The museum is huge and very organized. Only bad point is for the crowd! Its really bad at any point of day but i wouldnt miss it!!!
We reserved the tickets 2 weeks before to go. We reserved at 11 am.
There were too much people. We can not see the pictures with normal way.
The ilumitation is bad. The pictures brightness too much.
Vincent van Gogh, a genious
Me, a poor english speaker. ;)
Fantastic place to visit , simply a must do when in Amsterdam.
Came back for third time and this is one of the superb museums in the world.
Really a very good place. It has all the paintings, drawings and life history of Vincent van Gogh
A very complete display and story about the life of Vincent Van Gogh. I loved the display and also the exhibition on Japanese Art and Van Gogh. Worth a visit.
Worth a visit for all the art lovers. Can get busy so plan your trip accordingly.
I usually like museums a little less than the next person, but there was something about this museum that drew me in. First of all, it s absolutely gorgeous- crisp and clean, wide open spaces with enough character to give you an experience and not just a walk through of art. I also loved the option of being able to do the shortcut viewing of important works on the headset tour while still being able to look at everything. I learned so much and I feel more connected to his spirit as an artist, which I think all artists every really want their work to do.
Interesting experience even if he is not one of your favorites
Really lovely. Lots of paintings to look at and information on the walls. We decided not to get the talking tour. Moving and lovely
Beautiful collection of Van Gogh's work and inspirations.
If you're short of time in Amsterdam and tossing up about what museums to see, would definitely recommend putting this towards the top of the list.
The sunflower exhibit was fantastic. The museum was very nice but the highlight was the painting class they had as a special exhibit.
Really enjoyed getting to see the stages of his art. Was definitely worth going. Remember you will need to buy tickets online ahead of time.
The only downside was not seeing more of the really big name works of his.
They search you at the gate, they don't allow photos and the staff enforces this with enthusiasms to say the least, although they have no idea why you can't take photos and honestly neither do I. I went to three other museums that day in Amsterdam and all of them allowed photos. I'd suggest Rijsmuseum (who also had Van Gogh paintings you might like to get a photo of for your family back home.
Worth the wait. I'm not a big art lover. Being able to see the work up close and learn about Van Gogh was tops. I especially like the area with sketchbooks and misc; of course, the paintings were a must see.
Spent several hours here. Just the right level of information to read/hear. Good food in the cafe too.
A great experience for sure! It's hard to explain the feeling one gets being so close to such amazing art work!!
Beautiful museum. Get your tickets at front of your visit.
Is there a time that this museum would be less crowded? Takes a lot of time to move around the people to see paintings properly :(
Great Museum. You can do the highlights tour on the audio device within 2 hours. Don't forget to admire the stories and paintings.
Amazing experience finally getting to visit the Van Gogh museum.
The whole reason anyone would come here is to see Van Gogh s creations. Of course, he s a world class artist. The museum does honor him adequately and help illustrate who he was, his vision, and the impact of mental illness.
Why is this museum 4 stars in my opinion?
It s fame clearly outpaces the facility s capacity and the patrons and staff now have to operate within the confines of the physical space. No kidding the place is crowded - the content is outrageously famous. The line queue is crazy and disorganized when they know exactly how many people will be lined up. The staff is obviously frustrated with the herd of lost tourists for lack of unattractive line queues and/or signage. Inside the place feels more like an ant hill than an art gallery. The patrons are packed with angst as bumping into guests and shuffling around strollers with screaming kids grind at ones nerves. This is where architecture and pragmatism unflatteringly collide.
The audio guide itself was great but the technology was also a bit behind the times with no smartphone app available. Great experience but not excellent from the museum-side.
Not trying to be super critical but with properly managed expectations, the quality of the experience may be improved. Still, Van Gogh s art and artifacts are well and interestingly displayed- very deserving for the attention his work garnered after his seemingly tortured existence.
Great museum! Visit to get a good feel of Dutch history and art, his life story is told alongside.
The new building is an architectural beauty itself, the special exhibitions that it features are worth another visit. The museum is opened Friday night! Tip skip the line and book your tickets online in advance.
Great exhibition of the entirety of Van Gogh's life. Getting the headphones bos a must to get the most out of the museum. If you are planning on going you need to order your tickets at least a week in advance to guarantee a time and day that fits your schedule.
Great museum, plenty of Van Gogh s art is there but not all of them!
The wardrobe was pretty fast.
I was there the first week of March, there were A LOT of people, a year ago I was there in April and had the museum for myself. Always a pleasure.
We didn't have much time so we went for the shorter path with the most important paintings. The museum is well organised, audioguides are perfect and Van Gogh's masterpieces are absolutely unmissable.
Beautiful collection and great audio guides. I learned so much more about van Gogh and his paintings.
Museum can be crowded through. But I didn't mind, I still managed to see everything.
Very nice museum shop.
The entire museum is devoted to the mind of Van Gogh himself. The museum gave me an insight into the chaotic thought process of the master painter, whom I had never before understood in such depth. This is a place I am glad to have seen in my life.
A must see in Amsterdam I sent suggest to book the ticket with audio guide, it's extremely helpful to understand Van Gogh life and details of his paintings
Absolutely wonderful. Incredible art and insight in a modern environment. Really liked how interactive it was.
Better to book a ticket in advance! (Week before is optimal)
Full exhibitions, with good written explanations. Besides paintings, some personal stuff of artist is represented, as well as letters, originally written mostly in French, but which you can listen to in English or German.
There is also a small exhibition with highly emotional installations "in Van Gogh's dream" - worth visiting!
Shop of the museum has lots of amazing things! Simple souvenirs starting from 1 euro for a postcard to accessories 27+ euro and reproductions and posters of famous paintings ~40-60 euro. Interesting books showing different aspects of artist's life on different languages available from 7 euro.
You can visit a 20 min free lecture. (Not sure about haw regular it is. we've been at 1h30 pm).
taking photos inside an expo is forbidden!
The exhibition is nicely arranged together with the audio tour builds up the story perfectly. The color of the walls made a beautiful contrast with the gorgeous paintings of Van Gogh. There is so much to see and also a lot of information on his artwork. The cafe was surprisingly good as well. Worth a visit!
For those who love Van Gogh it is amazing and really emotional. You can see not only his work but also those who inspired him. You can travel through his whole life. Also there is a gift shop where you can buy cute stuff.
it really was a great educational experience; priceless!
Beautiful museum and organized very well.
It is advisable to take tickets sufficiently in advance
Lots of self portraits, the type of person who nowadays would always have their camera out taking their 7th selfie of the day
Check to make sure the pieces you want to see are there if there's something in particular you are going for. Book before hand online for a timeslot. Free bag and coat check. Great gift shop with lots of trinkets featuring the artwork.
I enjoyed the museum a lot and got to learn a good amount about van gogh. The audio guide was worth the extra 5 euros. Make sure you buy your tickets online in advance or else you wont get in. I spent about an hour and 15 minutes in there and got through the highlights tour and the dreams temporary exhibit.
Great place. Compact too. Cafe Terrace at Night and Starry Night are not displayed here.
Beautiful collection! I loved this museum.
I ll give some advice...
You can book your ticket in advance at the website they are 19 euros adults.
They have cloakroom where you can leave your coat, umbrella or small items but they can t storage luggage, there aren t lockers at the museum.
You are not allowed to take pictures or videos inside the museo there are certain designated areas called selfie-walls.
There is WiFi available.
They have multimedia guide that is available in eleven languages it is 5 euros adults. You can book it the same time as your online ticket.
It is a wonderful, big museum.
They offer good wheelchair access.
They have three museum shops.
People who work at the museum is very kind.
It is impressive seeing the real paintings, different from the pictures that we always see. My favorite painting is the sunflowers that he painted in France 1889 because they communicate gratitude.
If you visit Amsterdam you definitely should try.
