My wife purchased an Ultra Classic for me for my birthday. I was having a hard time pulling the trigger on getting my first bucking spring keyboard, But boy am I happy she got it for me. It has been my daily driver for over 5 months now and I love it. Build quality is fantastic despite the age of the tooling. Perfect uniform feel across all the keys. The only downside I have found is a lack of Media keys for using on a modern system. This is easy to work around with apps in windows, But adding them to the board someway either with a function layer or added buttons would make these wonderful keyboards absolutely perfect!
I've owned a Unicomp "Classic 104" USB model in black since 2013 (build date 12/10/13), and it has honestly been the best investment I could've made in my custom-built rig. The tactile feedback is excellent, as is the overall quality of the keyboard. Despite the fact that some may have you believe Unicomp's keyboards don't feel like an "authentic" Model M, I can quell any doubt in that instantly by saying I notice no difference between my 2013 Unicomp and a 1988 Model M I've used in the past. Not only are the keyboards great, so is the customer service. When I had a question before purchasing my keyboard back in 2013, the response time was 11 minutes. They even got my keyboard (and a couple IBM PS/2 mice from the "bargain bin") to me the next day at no additional cost.
I've since customized my Unicomp with a set of their blue accessory keycaps. I'd be first in line to purchase a set of white lettering on black keycaps for the remaining keys, but they don't have the tooling for that. I hope they hear the popular demand for such an option and offer that one day.
Why would you buy any other keyboard?
Let me start by saying I recommend Unocomp because they keep the IBM model M alive and it is overall a good product where they fall short for me is lack of information they didnt really wanna give me in depth detail as a new buyer I bought one anyway because you know model M and all when it finally arrived over 4.5 days i noticed some bad keys so talked to support they agreed take it back wouldn't really confirm for me what would happen with the old board or anything have sent a replacement now but they wont say what the issue was and if the item coming is a repair or full replacement like i asked. I appreciate and respect unicomp for what they do but communication and consumer relations could definitely be better
They have come through for me many times. The keyboard I bought from them is phenomenal, and they also repaired my original 1988 Model M for cheap. Wonderful company. I can't recommend enough.
