Such a nice atmosphere. Wine was excellent, food was very good - is not Michelin star but then you wouldn't expect that. Mum had fish and chips where the fish was remarkably well cooked (perfect, glistening, not overcooked).

Last year we had a wonderful Xmas dinner here. This year it was much worse. We didn't get any chestnut stuffing or cranberry (as per the menu), and when we asked about it, we were given the bill with a bottle of wine added to it (which we More
I stayed here for a week with work. I choose this hotel due to its location. This did not disappoint. It s a 2 minute walk to the cathedral and about 5 minutes to the town centre, where you will find plenty of restaurants and bars. The room was lovely, very comfortable and very well equipped. The staff were friendly and accommodating, in particular Chole and Josh who I felt went the extra mile to make my stay so comfortable. The car park is small but again the staff do all they can to fit everyone in and shuffle cars where needed. I ate in the restaurant once during my stay. I will say the service in the restaurant was the only negative as it was quite slow but they were quite busy. The food in the restaurant is exceptional and the early evening 3 course meal deal is very reasonable for the quality of food. Overall I had a lovely stay even if it was for business. Next time I m in the area I will definitely stay here again business or pleasure.
Olde English pub, tucked away behind Winchester Cathedral. great atmosphere , friendly service. Food never disappoints. Good selection of beers and wines..
Great pub- used to be even better when linked more with the C0llege theme, offering Wyke Rarebit , Sausages with home -made mustard etc. Stayed when had Teddies on the beds. Wonderful. Now seem to have too many rules and regulations which makes the place less welcoming- an arrogance from some bar staff - possibly due to the fact the place is crowded- and IMPOSSIBLE to get on the phone! The publicity says phone if have questions but it is NEVER answered and there's no answerphone. Please get your act together on these points which really spoil what used to be an exemplary pub experience.
Great historical pub, like pretty much any pub in Winchester. Good choice of real ales and food. Several rooms with a cosy and old school feeling. Literally, as many of the tables are old school desks. The only pub in England with a double corner door entrance.
My wife and I called in for a drink on our wedding anniversary as this was where friends and family gathered for a meal the evening before our wedding in 1981! The pub is "wallpapered" with memorabilia of a historic and political nature. I would love to have the time to look at it all. There are at least four rooms where you can eat plus a garden. The staff are friendly and courteous.
The Wykeham Arms, Winchester is an interesting building filled with old military artefacts. Lots of different sized pewter tankards on the walls. One room had an original school desk by the bar with an ink well space. Staff very friendly and obliging, helping customers to be covid19 aware and pointing out the directional arrows to follow to maintain social distancing. The pub is part of the scheme supported by Government to keep restaurants open. I enjoyed my meal of haddock and chips. The peas were mashed garden peas with mint and the tartar sauce appeared freshly made. My only small reservation would be, if I had paid full price for the meal, I would have considered it a little over priced. Perhaps the batter on the fish was a little overcooked. I would still go back.
So disappointing! My birthday treat so complaints were kept to a minimum as we didn't want to spoil the atmosphere. We opted for appetisers rather than a starter. No sooner had the olives and bread been served when our main course came! I commented on the fact that we had not been given time to eat our appetiser and was told it was because the bread wasn't cooked for the starter so they were late in serving it! OK so why not delay main course as well? My main course of scallops was tepid and very soon turned to cold which made them unpleasant to eat. Not good. Overpriced. We will not be returning.
Wonderful ambience, excellent food & would definitely recommend this historic "watering-hole" as a destination Pub/restaurant. Dogs welcomed but children are not as there are open fires & lots of nooks & crannies.
Nice old pub in the centre of Winchester. Beer selection isn't huge and is mainly Fuller's ales. Service can be patchy, especially at busy times when there could be more staff.
Hmmm. This place is a pub of two halves. On one hand, it's a great little characterful pub, with a lovely atmosphere. We enjoyed a couple of drinks there with no issues. So we had high hopes when we came back later for dinner. Sadly, the More
Looked forward to a great Christmas day meal, boy we where sadly let down. On arrival no merry Christmas from the pub-staff seating us. When i booked in August I asked for a specific table in the main restaurant, we where shown to a table More
This isn't a review of the food as we didn't/ couldn't stay to eat but a comment on their child policy. We were looking for somewhere for sunday lunch and the Wykeham Arms had been recommended. However, the notice on the door states no under 8s but 8s and over allowed in the restaurant until 5pm (it was 2.45pm). As our daughter is 8 and is well behaved when eating out we gave it a try. First barman said children weren't allowed but when we said daughter was 8 he consulted a colleague who patronisingly told us to walk round to the restaurant. Waitress there again told us no children allowed but when we told her she was 8 again she spoke to someone in the back and reappeared saying it was ok but could we wait in bar. By this time we were feeling incredibly uncomfortable and the final straw came when told they didn't do child portions so we left (ended up in Bishop on the Bridge which was delicious - go there if you have kids and even if you don't!). My issue isn't necessarily that they aren't child friendly - although their treatment of us made me sad for our daughter - it's that they operate a half way policy that doesn't work and that the staff clearly don't know about. Why bother allowing kids at all as they really don't welcome them.
What a wonderful pub. Living in the USA now makes me yearn for such a traditional pub with charm and character. The food is amazing and the real ale selection decent. No bud light here good sir. Will be back with my American friends to show them how it really should be done. They won't listen. They like all their beer sub minus conditions. One can try! Thanks again guys for such great service!!
Really great old pub in Winchester. 10 of us had a really first class meal. Good selection of wines and beers etc. This place has real character and charm. My favourite pub in the whole of the South of England. Parking can be a challenge in the little back streets behind the Cathedral. You have been warned.
Always great, a friendly pub with a nice beer garden and nice owners. Consistent over the years and you always meet interesting people there. Very stylish and a must for visitors to Winchester. Great food too and a lovely location in town near the Cathedral and water meadows.
Went for a Sunday roast with a friend of mine. Food was good but over priced. Service was extremely poor unfortunately. Would recommend bishop on the bridge over this establishment. Better service. Better food. Lower price.
Lovely, cosy pub, at least 3 fires/wood burners going. Staff friendly + accommodating . Great tasting food - we've been travelling here from Poole for years to meet friends for lunch.
Went there for a Christmas meal organised by a friend. The food was lovely but they completely messed up our reservation. Instead of a Christmas meal with crackers and such, we were sat down to a table with menus and asked what we wanted. We had already ordered all our food, and they were quick to try to sort it out. The staff were apologetic and helpful, but still a pretty fundamental error.
Having been to the The Wykeham arms in Winchester a couple of times before, many moons ago ( and really enjoyed it then) , we decided to re-visit again this weekend for a birthday lunch. Well I have to say that we weren't disappointed. There was a warm welcome & we immediately felt at home. The staff were all great, the atmosphere was very relaxing & the food was nothing short of excellent. In fact I would go as far to say that the haddock & chips that I chose was the best I've ever had !! Parking is very limited so we had to prk in the town centre but it really isn't a problem as it is very pleasant and relatively short walk through the Cathedral grounds to the pub. Highly recommended !
This is a pub with an inn, so remarking separately, but in short, both fantastic and highly recommended.
Pub: as a CAMRA member I would happily call this my local if i lived here! 5 ales on tap, good selection, but most importantly poured properly and well maintained! All staff I interacted with was very pleasant and helpful. All bar staff knowledgeable on their beers. Having dinner and breakfast, both meals were amazing! Fresh, flavorful and appropriate serving sizes.
Inn: I stayed in the single room on the second floor. Clean, well kept, comfortable bed, and pub's WiFi adequately in range in the room. Note: if you're an American (as I am) you might find this room small. But I'm no stranger to small rooms and this definitely does the trick! I will stay here again!
