I was let down. Perhaps my insensitivity to modern art is to blame. Place could be less expensive and pretensious. Also the commercial aspect is visible. After visiting the museum I was AD Target on Facebook for MoMA merchandise.
It doesn't have a museum soul. People walking by taking photos of some famous paintings. You cannot even chill outside (summer time) while eating a sandwich. A guard will come over, and ask you to move two feet to a designated food corner. And there was no reason to do that.
It's a good place If you'd like to get disgusted by modern times, people and their art. I felt my sould was washed away, or at least dimmed after visiting the museum. I've never felt so plastic in my life.
An old favorite, going there in all the stages in my life have given me persepective and respect for all art.
Friday is free Day. We are a family of 5 and on tight budget, so it was appreciated free day...got to see a bit of art and especially Star in night of van gogh Although there was a lot a people easy to move around. Truly enjoyed it.
Amazing exhibits. Huge variety. Visually stimulating in an amazing way that evokes emotions.
What an amazing inspirational place filled with grand history and modem amusement!
Loved it wish I had a hole day just to spend there looking around
Good place to go. Decent collection. Unfortunately I am not a big fan of modern art otherwise would have had more fun. Good ambience. Friendly staff.
I'm literally in tears... I've seen it in real life 'The Starry Night'
Love this museum. A little tip, start at the top floor and work your way down. That way you get to see the works of Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh (including Starry Night!) etc... first, then progress to more modern as you work your way down. Outside the early stages modern masters, there are some absolutely amazing, provocative works here. Very much worth the trip for me.
Beautiful Museum must see many exhibits great paintings well organized
I hope you re having a great time at the museum

A beautiful beacon of expression. You will find something to inspire your soul or at least keep you entertained.
A must see in New York. Can easily spend the day in here.
Everyone forced to check knapsacks then held hostage when we went to try to get our knapsacks back. We were forced to stand in a huge line for almost 2 hours again ! Screw this place. Terrible rules.
Decently big. They do not have enough description of the art. Really hard for a non artist to make anything out of the abstract exhibits
So worth it. So, so worth it. But take a few days to check out the whole place. It can be quickly over stimulating
So much beautiful art in such a phenomenal building. Friday nights have free admission, so they can be quite crowded. But the experience was worth braving the crowd.
Member "quiet mornings" Wed 7:30 am w. Guided meditation at 8:30 in sculpture garden
Open until 9p.m. Fri-Sat thru Dec 30.
Member early hours 9:30-10:30am for select exhibits only
Only 2 reasons to visit it in my opinion: If you really want to see Van Gogh's Starry Night (If you make it close enough which is apparently very hard) or if you really are a fan of modern art. Else, don't do it. Seriously.
People.....please stop taking pictures of the art!!! You will never take a better one than you will find online. It's slowing this whole place down. Rant over....
Beautiful museum always enjoy when I go there enjoy history so much to see
So many diverse styles of work on display. 5 floors of galleries and a cafe with amazing decor on the 6th. Observation deck overlooking the courtyard with more sculptures. Worth the trip!
The Museum is under construction so I don't know how much of that affected our feeling that the museum seemed somewhat of a hodgepodge. Still, we loved taking our young teens to see many of the famous paintings they had only seen in books. Always a thrill. Nice to discover some new treasures as well. Always very good exhibits-something for everyone. Stay an hour or a few days! Nothing like seeing the real paintings by all the great artists. And, worldwide artifacts.
I am not an art fan but really enjoyed this museum.
Perfect place. It is free on Friday afternoon. But as you can imagine it will be so crowded so you cannot walk through and have time and space to enjoy arts. So strongly recommend to visit on weekdays with proper paid admission.
Security and the people who passed out the tickets won't be happy if you lost your tickets or try to make a shortcut exit from the inspection tables to the exit, otherwise,a great museum
Well if you like modern art, this is definitely the one of the best places to get a grasp of it, apart of course of its incredible collection of paintings from different techniques such as surrealism, cubism or impressionism. A great museum of course and a must in NYC, check out free Thursdays, may be crowded but worth it non the less. Modern art sometime can be complicated to understand, but the thing is sometimes it does not require a deep understanding or insight to enjoy it, so do not feel overwhelmed by some of the pieces you'll find at the museum, just think of them whatever comes to your mind at the first glimpse of them. You'll find very well known paintings by art giants such as Matisse, Van Gogh, Picasso or Rothko, be sure to catch them cause even if you're not a fan you can say yo saw them at least or pretend you're an art connoisseur at Instagram (I'm not by the way, it's either I like it or not).
Because of its fame and being in the city that it is the museum is usually crowded, so go with patience, enjoy it and admire it, time well spent and no regrets warranty.
Good overall. It's a shame that the architecture floor was closed during my visit. I would avoid going on Friday evenings as it can be very busy due to being free.
Great works of art. The people working there are very friendly.
Amazing Museum. I could say the best art museum I visited so far.
How could you not love this place! Just remember there is a lot to see and unless you really want to spend a lot of time, make a plan. I love the fact that you can see so much in one place. I highly recommend this place on a rainy day or when you are in an adventurous mood!
Nice permanent collection. Over crowded but because it was a free Friday night!
A must when I m New York. The permanent collection is amazing and the temporary exhibits are also interesting and worth a visit. We had a break in the cafe/restaurant and weren t disappointed.
The most boring thing. I am 10 years old and my art is way much better. I mean how the heck is a shovel art,and most of the art is pictures in a frame not even painted. The only thing that was not that boring was the midnight sky but it was super full of people,it was like an ant hill. I won't come back!!!!!!!
The best Museum of the NYC, it takes a full day more or less, you should go!
Spectacular. World class. I couldn't believe I saw so many incredible pieces in one place!!! My heart was happy when I left. One of the best museums I have ever visited.
*Picasso has left the chat*
*Van Gogh has left the chat*
*Da Vinci has left the chat*
*Monet has left the chat*
*Renaissance has left the chat*
*Depth has left the chat*
*Actual art has left the chat*
Honestly the entire first art and technology based floor (exhibit) needs to ALT-F4.
Seeing the classics from Van Gogh, Picasso, and Dali, in real life was a treat though.
Overall great experience while visiting New York, and the best part is that it was free. They had an event which entrance was free from 4-8 on Fridays.
It s a nice space, the lighting is good, the artwork is fine - all the big names are here.
But MoMA is missing something - call it a grand narrative? a sense of purpose? It s hard to feel that this isn t just a collection of mercenary art for the hordes to consume.
Or maybe I should say for the peanut-crunching masses to imbibe? Most of the art barely touches the sides.
With growing infuriation, I watched as the illiterati crowded to see masterpieces, take a photo and then walk away.
If MoMA wants to be recognised with the best worldwide galleries, they need to ban photography.
Came here for an after hours MOMA event in the garden. Absolutely fabulous with the open bar and the DJ playing hits all night along. One of the the true gems worth visiting in NYC! We came for the fashion exhibit which was truly amazing to see. I'm so glad I got to see it.
They have Target free fridays from 4-8pm. I'll definitely make it a mission to come here one of these days.
Went once a year ago and once this year on Free Friday. It was crazy busy on free Friday because so many people took advantage of it. Pretty great to be able to go free, but I think I'll go on a different day next time and just pay. This museum is fantastic, well-organized, and a must see for NYC.
I can highly recommend MoMA for both kids and adults. They offer free audio guides which are great and I also listened to the one for the kids which was both informative and fun so make sure to get it for your kids. Miro exhibition was fantastic, great selection. Their permanent exhibition is always worth a visit.
Some of the art is a little out there, but overall well worth the price of admission. Nice variety.
Large empty rooms with not much that qualifies to be called art, or pleasing to the eye. We did not get the audio guide since we weren't carrying an govt issued I.D., and they wouldnt accept our passports. Did see a few good paintings, but you can count these on your fingers. The worst museum I've ever been to. Wasted 50$ on 2 tickets. Read somewhere in the reviews that they offer free entry on Fridays. Wait for the free pass if you absolutely have to visit this place. They apparently have one of the best in house restaurants, but that is no reason to pay a 25$ entry fee.
The Miro exhibit and The Design exhibit were fantastic.
Not as impressive as I thought it would be! Best thing was the starry night painting.
Every time my husband and I, visit Manhattan we pay a visit to The Museum of Modern Art. Exquisite exhibitions, great atmosphere, friendly service and we love their bookshops.
Definitely recommend.
A beautiful place. I could wander here for days. Always something to see. Starry Night just tucked away in the corner? A blessing.
No, seriously, take advantage of whatever discount you can get and take a day trip here. Bound to be busy but that doesn t affect the experience.
Always leave with something to think about! Just beware the gift shop - pricey as anything.
The collections featured are really well thought out. This is definitely a multi day museum, there's so much to take in.
Great modern art museum! I'd skip straight to the 5th floor because that's mainly where everything is with smaller exhibits on the other floors. You can see Van Gogh's Starry Night and a few original Monets. There is an audio tour you can take for free, you just have to leave a photo ID with them. Their gift shop is also really nice with a lot of different stuff.
One of the world's greatest art museums. If Picasso is your guy, this is your museum. If you have an hour, you can see enough masterpieces to justify the entrance fee. If you have a couple of days, there are enough exhibits to keep an art lover interested, fascinated, enthralled. If you like museum shops, you'd better save an hour and a few dollars---MoMA's store is huge and full of irresistible books, posters, and souvenirs. You'll love MoMA. Go!
One of the best museums in the world. Where else can you see original masterpieces....Picasso, Pollack, Brancussi.... Amazing!
Amazing! Free tickets on Friday from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
The art here was unique and personalized. I highly recommend going here more than once.
Loved it
Fantastic permanent and temporary exhibits. Be sure to pick up the free audio tour on the second level, which is tucked to the side before entering the hallway to the cafe and shops. Also be sure to check battery life of guide before wandering too far, mine was about 40% when I started and it didn't make it through the whole museum.
Very crowded but did deliver on expectations; a very popular and well known art museum.
Loved this place. It is full of really interesting art.
Even though it is a little crowded, I love that the museum is free on Fridays 4-8 PM because of UNIQLO. It's a great place featuring famous artists. ALTHOUGH, it was rainy the friday that I went and there were a lot of umbrella thieves which is very unfortunate for such a place.
It's written everywhere that "lovers" of Magritte is here. Paid 25 dollars just to see it, and then i discover it's not on view. What a shame.
You will find a truly magnificent collection in a fabulous building. I've been going here for decades and still love it. If I were living in nyc again, I would definitely become a member again. On the negative side, it's expensive and generally crowded though I will say, the building handles crowds amazingly.
Charles White and Bodys Izek Kingelez exhibits are both brilliant and well worth the price of admission. One star off for not having a down escalator from the 2nd floor to the lobby.
Always an impressive collection of Vanguard modern art from around the world. Be mindful of the lines and try to buy your tickets ahead of time
There are too many people, So Don't concentrate on the masterpiece.
Really enjoyed going there! If you have limited time I would suggest you to go to the 5th floor first so that you get to see the most famous paitings.
Crowded but nice. Interesting new media art mixed with a few classics.
MoMa is a great place to visit any day of the week. I would recommend that you check the schedule of events to learn about the great events and guests that frequent the museum.
If you are looking for a respite from the loud city, head to the outdoor sculpture garden and cafe areas. Peace awaits.
This place is very fun to visit. I especially like the art that is inspired by math and has discernible patterns. I posted some photos of my most recent visit. I wish they were still showing some Kandinsky pieces.
Beautiful building and galleries, but some of the "art" is questionable.
Lots of cool art. I love it. This nyc museum is not free . Most of the art is inspiring & some makes you scratch your head like what? But overall, it opens your mind and educates you in the very best in modern art.
Made us get a membership to Vist as of September 24th 2020.
This museum is always super inspiring. Lots of great works and rotating exhibitions. It s a nice place to go to spend the day. Students get a discount, and CUNY students get in free!
One of the best selections of art on this side of the Atlantic, highly, highly recommend if you have a few hours to spare.
Very large museum with unique art on canvass and sculptures
Fantastic experience if you love or even just appreciate art.
I can t believe they let this many people in ! It is impossible to have a proper visit in the museum, we started our tour around 2 and was incredibly pleasant walking through the galleries! But around 4 people started to flow inside. We couldn t even walk and the heat was imberable , this is unacceptable for a museum that ISNT free. Much better experience in London ones!
Very interesting, not too big, very good to visit if you have enough time between JFK connections.
I would have gave it 5 stars but the staff on every floor can be annoying constantly reminding you about not taking videos of the art, and no flash when you take pictures. Ahhh hello, I come here just to take pictures and videos of the art. Other than that it made a very good impression on me. The line can be quite long so I would strategize a bit and try to go at times when it's less busy or order tickets online to avoid long lines. I came to see my favorite artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The works in The MOMA span a large range of contemporary styles, from more accessible/poppy/flashy works to complex and more interesting pieces. The variety in modern art means that there's something for everyone, even individuals who are less drawn to art museums. Highly recommend.
Loved the museum! It is huge and you can spend all day wandering through the many exhibits.
The exhibits were fantastic. I got to see my favorite painting in the world, Starry Night, in person! We also really enjoyed the sculpture garden outside, especially the little concession stand that serves wine! :)
MoMa has always been a favorite of mine, but after the expansion it has become a lot more organized and easier to explore. The immersive exhibitions and creative labs are great additions that make the visitors more engaged. I really enjoyed my visit.
Never been there? better hurry! But rather choose another day than free friday! There's so many people aiming there, that once inside you can't really enjoy the art
Lots of cool paintings, the ones you saw on books and tvs.
it was great! admission was $10 per adult and they had a wide collection to showcase. there is also an app to listen to audio descriptions for each art piece. personally not into art myself but i m sure art lovers will appreciate this :)
they even had a small cafe and souvenir shop in it
I came here just to see Brancusi s sculptures, but I decided to visit in full the museum and I was very impressed. Not a big fan of modern art but was worth the visit! Food on the 5-th floor cafeteria very good as well! I recommend the chicken wrap!
