This elaborate Victorian house in the Nook Farm neighborhood of Hartford is a far cry from what I imagined the riverboat pilot, miner, and typesetter from Hannibal, Missouri might call home. The elaborate "Gilded Age" decor was, in large part, designed by Louis C. Tiffany & Co. (son of the founder of Tiffany & Co).
The Nook Farm was an enclave of prominent artists, thinkers and activists, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose house is a stone's throw from the Clemens house, and which is also open to the public.

The tour is not inexpensive, but I wouldn't miss it for the world. I hope to return when I'm able to spend more time.

The Living History tour was amazing. Our guide, Lizzie the housemaid (aka: Betsy), was extremely knowledgeable, personable, witty and hilarious. The house is stunning, and the tour makes the experience stellar.

One of the most beautifully crafted houses I have seen. The detail, hand craftsmanship and heart of this house is amazing! Michael our tour guide was fantastic and humorous :) Definitely recommend taking the tour and exploring this house!

I can't put it better than Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) himself Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

Good tour guide. Interesting stories. Visit the center to learn more about Samuel Clemens and his family. These fancy old houses are hard to maintain. The fees are justified since it is necessary to preserve the house. Conveniently next door to Harriet Beecher Stowe house.

One of the best little museums (with historical house) in the World.
Loved the little closet with one of the first residential telephones
ever installed, which Clemens would use to complain to the phone
company about poor service.

I recommend to anyone and everyone to visit this home. A lot of dark history and interesting history, inside these walls. All ages and very cheap!
Our guide was a little older lady with white hair and the sweetest voice, made the experience so much better.

Amazing historic site that strives to give glimpse into Mark Twain's life and times, as well as his work. They offer lots of contemporary programming that honors Twain's legacies in humor, literature, satire, criticism, social commentary and more. Twain (Sam Clemens) lived there with his family for 20 years.

A bit on the pricy side for these museum/historical site places, but well worth it. The house itself has immense beauty, plus the history of the Clemens (Twain) family. Many items are original! The gift store is also rather impressive with a wide diversity of good-quality items.

A major tourist attraction in Hartford, once you go, you can efficiently reflect on Mark Twain's life. Guided tour into the house is $ 20 per person, children $ 11, museum movies, old-fashioned tools and typewriters, etc. 2 admissions are on your own. It was a dollar. Personally, a $ 6 type is enough. If you've never been to such a tour in the United States, a tour inside your home might be a good idea. There are quite a few tours of museums in the United States that look inside the houses of the time, but honestly, every house has its impression in movies and exhibits, though there are differences in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Truly impressive! Based on the tour guide's explanation, they've done a LOT of restoration since opening. We went earlier this year and honestly there seemed to only be a few rooms that hadn't quite been renovated.

Being familiar with Mark Twain, but by no means a big nerd about him, I was really taken by the historic significance of his writing, his own life, and his consummate storytelling. I had never known about his ritual with his daughters whereby he told a new story based on the same set of items on the family mantel.

In addition to the house itself, the museum (where you meet before your tour the house) is really well laid out. The different types of tours also seems like it would be a lot of fun if you've got a family etc. (There's one where someone portrays one of the maids to take you on the tour etc.). There a lot of artifacts in the museum and really fascinating background information on everything.

If you've got a Walker Art Center Friend (or above) membership, this is one of the reciprocal museums you can get into and the standard tour come with entry!

Neat piece of history that's easily accessible. Tho it's all closed down due to covid19 - you can still roam the property on your own. We were greeted by a man with a dog who was willing to share his knowledge about the property, area and Mark Twain himself and "worked" for gratuity of course!
Tho I didn't have anything, he still persisted.
Fun visit nonetheless

We booked the tour ticket, which was very informative and properly adjusted in terms of length. In retrospective, a simple visit of the premises and exhibitions would left us more or less clueless about Mark Twain, his life, and his family. A truly captivating experience, a truly American spirit to admire.

You go through a small museum to get to this amazing home. The guide was very knowledgeable. We were not allowed to take pictures in the house because some of the things were on loan and the insurance company would not allow it. The foyer was done by Tiffany, the staircase is an optical illusion. There is an atrium with a 400 year old vine. The ceiling to floor mirror was a wedding gift We saw the actual desk where he sat and wrote some of his most famous books.

Fantastic house; horrific tour leader. Amazing historical house of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) with lots of period detail. However, our tour leader was AWFUL. He didn't know much, not even the things that clearly were supposed to be part of the tour script. He spouted misinformation (who knew a squab was a fish?!). He stumbled and hesitated, and ever other word was umm, like, or you know. AWFUL experience. Surely guides can be better chosen and trained.

My last visit at the MT House was amazing. I did a tour and Mallory was amazing. Her knowledge and passion was just fantastic. I cannot wait for things to get better with everything and go back. Mallory is the best!!!

Mark Twain's stories were vivid and heartfelt but getting to understand the man by walking in his house and his footsteps is another story and really makes you appreciate him as a monument. The structure is finely-preserved and can withstand many more hordes of visitors.

The living history tour was fantastic and well worth the money. Our tour guide was in character as Joe Twichell for the whole tour and played his part really well. We got a detailed look at the house and lots of commentary on what he thought of Mark Twain. Each living history character is an entirely different tour so you can go on multiple. Highly recommended

The building architecture/exterior is great! I wish I could see the place from inside but the ticket to view the place is $20pp which I found to be quite expensive for this place.(I mean there are other world famous museums like AMNH/MOMA, to name few which have lower priced tickets or provide discounts to large group)They provide personal guided tour but I would suggest for them to lower the ticket prices and keep an option of unguided self tour

Good guided tour. Didn't come at the right time for the living tour, but it looked fun. Also, my 2 for 1 pass from the library couldn't be used for the living tour. Rmoyed the house & learned a lot.
