The tour guide was super informative. They have set up the house beautifully and you really get a sense of what it might have been like to live there and who he was as a person.

There was a lot on Mark Twain here that you get a lot with admission. I used a Groupon that made it worth the admission. 20 per person is a little high, but you get to tour his beautifully restored house with interesting and knowledgeable tour guides. I look forward to visiting again!
An amzing experience. A tribute to Mark Twain and Hartford.
Great house and tour. Staff great and friendly. Accepting of questions during tour. Learned things about Twain. Interesting seeing the modern conveniences of the time when it was built. Loved the amount of original items.
In this place Mark Twain used to live. They made a small museum in here such as rreminders of Marl Twain. If you are in Hartford, Connecticut this is one of the places you would want to visit.
Excellent museum, displays, interesting history a d our guide was fabulous!! This is a place that is worth getting to know about America's most famous author. The guide brought to life Mr. Twain's life and literature and family life. The house where he loved was beautiful and well appointed with period antiques. Such an amazing and interesting place. Well worth the time and effort to go to if!!!
Beautiful house. The tour was rich with history. Very interesting
I loved the tour and the guide was really great at his job
Great place to visit. Staff made the tour very interesting.
We drove nearly 200 miles to visit the Mark Twain House in Hartford which included an overnight stay. Finding the house was frustrating. There are no signs pointing you to the house. We arrived 90 minutes early and were refused an earlier tour even though there was room on the next tour. No explanation was given except that the policy was Tickets purchased on line were not flexible or something like that. As our tour time approached, we went into the gift shop to buy some souvenirs and as we were standing at the cash register the tour guide came in an announced that it was time for our tour. By the time we got out to the designated staging area, we were one minute late (no exaggeration) and the tour left without us. We were able to catch up with our tour tour and the guide was exceptional which pretty much saved the day. It was a better sweet experience but we left with a bad taste in our mouth. In our opinion, the people who manage this site should have better signage to the site, be more flexible about people who arrive early and ask guides to give guests a short grace period before departing on tours. As a side note, a week later, we toured Falling Water, a Frank Lloyd Wright House in western Pennsylvania and we found the site easily because of well place road signs, we were an hour early and were admitted to the next tour (5 minutes after we arrived) and the guides waited 5 minutes before departing on the tour. It was a refreshing experience after our frustating ordeal at the Mark Twain House.
If you've ever read any American literature, you have to go here. The guide we had was excellent.
Museum was closed because of COVID. But i managed to take pics of outside. Prince and pauper was the book which I read first time when i was in 6th grade. Remarkable writer and nice place of legend
It a neat place to see and the house tour takes you back in time!
nice day to walk around the property with a guided tour and hear all about his fun contraptions
A must see for anyone visiting Connecticut. $20 tour, and you can easily spend 2-3 hours here. And if you have time and interest afterwards, walk next door and use your admission ticket stub for $3 off the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center.
Gorgeous house. They could turn the lights up a bit. I understand being "period", but some rooms are so dark you can barely see the fine craftsmanship!
Great tour. The house was interesting and every little detail has a story to it. You'll learn a lot about Mark Twain's life and family.
We were in the area to drop off donations to Hawkwing charity and asked locals for any must see places. We were told about Mark Twain House, and we were very glad to visit. Twain married into money. The house and tour were delightful.
Also had a great lunch at Max's Fish.
A beautiful house and very interesting one to tour.
An amazing experience! Would defiantly recommend once covid is over!
I learned much I didn't know about Mark Twain and his family. Fascinating house with many original and restored items.
Fun place
Old house is amazing
He was not just A American
He was THE American
Such an important place and person. Absolutely beautiful house. Cool to see the preserved interior. And a great way to be reminded of the impact Mark Twain had on our culture.
Would be better if guests were able to tour the house on a self guided tour but otherwise great take on an amazing writer
Awesome. They only have tours in English, but it's worth it. General admission 20 dls
Enjoyed the tour and the history behind the house. It is beautiful.
I recently visited Hartford and wanted to go to a few museums. I went on a live tour. I really enjoyed it. I spent over two hours here. I loved my guide Nicki, she was very knowledgeable and funny. I learned allot about Mark Twain and his life and the house is amazing.
This is a great place to visit even iff you are not a fan of reading. The house has some unique architecture and some interesting history of the area.
Both the museum and house are excellent. The house is incredible as an 1870s period piece with all the conveniences of the day including a telephone and indoor flushing toilets. The house tour was excellent as was the tour guide. Try to see the intro movie before the house tour.
Pretty interesting tour! Our tour guide, Al, was great!
While spending the day in Hartford with my 2 teen kids, I was seriously considering going to explore the house but the admission price turned me right off.
Fun for a day trip. We did the living history tour, and I definitely recommend it. Our docent (Lizzy the Gossipy Maid), was extremely knowledgeable and unwilling to break character until the very end.
Really neat house to see, and the tour definitely gave me a deeper appreciation for Hartford's history. Our guide was up beat, pleasant and had a bit of dark sense of humor which fit the atmosphere and life of Clemens perfectly. I would definitely recommend for an out of towner looking for something to do or a new resident like myself looking for a better understanding of the history of his or her new home.
You will feel that contemporary days in yourself to soothe your soul !
Wonderful tour guide, neither too short nor too long, very interesting history
Loved the house.. n the total experience.. very friendly guide...
Very informative. Out guide (George?) knew so many unknown quirks about the Clemens family that I never heard of. They are in desperate need of donations and help. Please keep this American Heritage alive!
The tour with 'Reverend Joe", was absolutely wonderful and informative. We had a great time.
Amazingly ornate beautiful house! You wouldn t know it from the tacky outside
Literature and history buffs intersect here, and it's lovely. They also host lovely events.
Great place! Very interesting tour and Twain house is definitely worth the stop.
The house is really beautiful. It can only be accessed through their guided tour, but it is little bit pricey.
Beautiful house on the outside. We didn't take the tour though, because we were on a time crunch.
Very cool house. The visit is guided so was very informative.
Modern structure for its time. The guided tour was excellent and knowledgeable
Awesome historic house with informative guided tour.
This place is awesome, love it, our history is great
$20 for the 1 hour tour. Guide was knowledgeable but couldn t have been any more mono tone and dry. Beautiful house with a rich history.
Had an amazing time coming here for a tour. Great piece of American and literature history. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and able to answer all my questions.
Just loved the tour. Guide very informative and entertaining. Hope to go back when in the area again.
It was very interesting learning about Mark Twain with a well organized, knowledgeable, and pleasant guided visit.
Unreal! Truly a must see! Honestly, on par with seeing the statue of liberty, if not better
I'm so glad we stopped here! It is a really magical place and for sure something that should be on everybody's bucket list.
Really enjoyed our tour of the house this morning. The house is beautifully restored and the tour guide was very informative with a great sense of humor. I would definitely recommend this to friends and family.
The main reason I only gave it a 4 star rating was that there was no communication about the lack of handicap accessibility within the tour prior to purchasing tickets. The tour consists of two sets of stairs each about 3 stories tall. All other renovated historical I've toured recently have installed an elevator, so I was definitely surprised another patron in the tour with mobility limitations was not warned ahead of ticket purchase about the lack of accommodations.
This is a great place to visit, but not a good option for anyone with mobility limitations.
Shout out to Stephanie the knowable tour guide. Love your work today on the 9.45am tour.
To be in the room where Sam wrote Huckleberry Finn? That s worth the trip alone. The bonus is getting to learn about how Samuel Clemens became one of the most respected American authors, Mark Twain. Visiting his home we learn that he is quite deep and complex. His Huckleberry Finn only made him famous after his death. His home is stunningly beautiful and worth a visit. His stories and work are legendary.
Mark Twain led an interesting and full life which was brought to us through an informative guide ..... As a former English Teacher I was surprised at the additional info I learned about this famous author and abolitionist. Highly recommend this site.
Take the tour! Not only very informative but the funds support the house.
Always enjoyed Mark Twain books, now I appreciate him more. A very well done museum. Our tour guide, Al, was phenomenal. Incredible knowledge base, polite, spirited, really a perfect tour guide. Nothing Ferguson about him ;) I do wish we could take photos inside at a few designated spots. But so glad we stopped in during our New EnglNd roadtrip.
While the Mark Twain house itself is incredible, the tour does not do it justice, and unfortunately, I cannot recommend visiting especially at the high ticket prices. I would have gladly spent hours inside the house, but instead, was rushed through in about 45 minutes. It felt like we were being led through as quickly as possible in order to maximize the number of paying customers: we could not enter many of the rooms, and the tour guide did not let us linger to inspect details or even ask questions. While your experience may vary depending on the guide, the experience was more a commercial enterprise than a historical visit which is a shame considering the grandeur of the house. The museum itself is also an impressive building and I want to recommend this attraction, but without a better tour, my rating is a thumbs down.
Knowledgeable staff, with an emphasis on living history! Had a blast!
What a wonderful landmark and historical gem! The museum as well as the house are well worth the trip as you will be both inspired and challenged by the great Samuel L. Clemons! One draw back was the staff whereas they were pithy and the tour guide we had although full of knowledge was socially awkward. If you either love Mark Twain or have interest in American history do not miss this!!!!
What a great house tour. Guide well knowledgeable. Biggest gripe is that NO pics are allowed in the house.
