A wonderful example of Victorian architecture. Right next door to Harriet Beecher Stowe house. You visit in their world all afternoon. Stay in downtown Hartford and take the bus out to these destinations. Took the MegaBus from NYC. A lovely weekend in Hartford.

beautiful experience, one of the best preserved houses a fascinating story that of Mark Twain, a particularly interesting man. The Hartford visit basically focuses on this attraction. the museum is well kept and the staff very kind.
My boyfriend and I just visited Mark Twain's house a few days ago, and it was okay. To begin with the positives, the house is beautiful, and enchanting. Full of interesting details and warmth. The museum was refreshing, and full of useful facts and descriptions, and actual belongings of the Clemens family. The gift shop is also mostly nice. Oh and there was a live snake on the steps of the entrance, and it was adorable. Now, maybe it's the snobby European in me, but I was overall not impressed, and this place is somewhat disappointing. The price is too high, for what you get. I understand there are maintenances to be paid for, but it is still too high. Not to mention, there is no such thing as a student discount unless you are a UConn student, which is lame. An educational and historic place should offer student discount. The beginning of the tour was awkward. You had to share your favorite memory. Now this is cute, if you are a child, but a little uncomfortable and fake if you are a grown up. Then, the overly chipper tour guide took us on a what seemed to be a very brief tour. I felt rushed, and did not have enough time to look at things, especially the children's room, which I was most excited about. I did not understand why the guide counted to seven. I wish her pronunciation was more clear and that her speaking in general was more put together and formal. She was very very nice, but just a bit sloppy over all. I assume there was a next tour coming after us, so she had to rush, but perhaps there should be more time between tours. I give it three stars, because it was the best things to do in Hartford, and I love the house, even though it was very clear most things are not the true belongings from Mark Twain's time. I would definitely take my kids here when they start reading the American classics of Mark Twain, but hopefully by then, there will be some improvements. :)
Admission prices are high and museum viewings are available by scheduled tour only. I drove over an hour from NY to be told the next tour was at 1:30--I had arrived at 12:05. Guess I'll stick with his books and save my money. No tears here, headed to the art museum. I bet they let me walk around by myself. Like an adult.
I've always thought of Mark Twain in relation to his witticisms and his folksy stories. Who would have thought that he lived in such a sophisticated and elegant house? His wife was an heiress who inherited a fortune from her father, so they were able to build this incredible house
Visited with my husband and two teens on Monday. Our guide ("Rev. Joe") included facts of Twain's life, peppered with anecdotes, and pointed out items along the way. At conclusion, he dropped character and answered all questions. We all loved it, even the two who are not history enthusiasts.
Such an awesome gem of a museum in Hartford! My husband and I were soooo impressed with our docent and all we learned on our social visit! Well worth every cent! ( :
Tom Sawyer is waiting for you! The price of the guilded tour is $20. Highly recommend! Tour is about two hours and even if you didn't read any of the books, Mark Twain's associates will make sure you're all into it. Loads of interesting facts. Go inside the other building - they have some installations for free.
Well done exhibits and introductory film. Disappointment was they told us house tours were all filled up but one only had six people in it and could have been fuller.
The Living History tour was amazing. Our guide, Lizzie the housemaid (aka: Betsy), was extremely knowledgeable, personable, witty and hilarious. The house is stunning, and the tour makes the experience stellar.
If you are an American history buff this is worth the trip. I like Mark Twain so it was nice seeing the property and learning about his life in more detail.
We enjoyed seeing the outside of the home, along with the carriage house and Harriet Beecher Stowe's home next door. The guided tours were all booked up for the day, which was sad, but we didn't really have time for it anyway. The replica of Twain that is inside the building, made out of Legos, is totally cool!
Worthwhile attraction. Museum had interesting exhibits of both biography of Mr. Clemens and also cultural "treasures" accumulated over 90 years in the attic of their house. The house tour was great, our guide (Martha) was very knowledgeable and every room of the house we visited had been impressively restored to beautiful condition.
Exceeded all expectations! The house was decorated by Louis Comfort Tiffany and now totally restored. We took a tour with an actor representing Suzy Clemons which made the tour more interesting and personal. The Museum has audio aides and excellent displays. There is a cafe with delicious, affordable lunches. Be sure to watch the video first for whole to part learners!
We were unable to take the tour offer. However, we were able to walk around the beautiful grounds, and take a walk around a timeline of Mark Twains life.
If your having difficulty locating where you are to purchase tickets for the house tour. If you've parked in the MARK Twain parking lot the path should lead you directly to the office. If you came from the street to the left or front (OSLI) of the Mark Twain home you'll want to follow the path to the right of the house after you walk past it. This will take you to the front office.
We did the tour with the actor. The actor was knowledgeable but just felt like someone that could have just as well given the normal tour, he wasn't horrible but would have been just as well as the normal tour. I believe the cost for the tour was rather pricy but do recommend seeing the house. Do be sure to make reservations. If you have time, watch the movie (about 20 mins) before going through the house, highly recommended. Overall good experience
I really love this house and museum. It is just a beautiful gem in Hartford and the staff are very friendly and willing to answer any questions. I was particularly interested in the architecture, and they were happy to go into any and all details. It's also worth noting that their gift shop is incredibly reasonably priced, considering that it's a museum gift shop.
Our Living History house tour by Olivia Clemens was awesome. The tour guide really helped it come to life, and you could tell the tour guide cares deeply about the history of the home and about the family that resided there. Worth every penny as it helps keep the museum and home open for years to come. The museum was free to enter and experience. Wonderful exhibits and presentations all around!
