Michael Roberts Review of The Mark Twain House

We drove nearly 200 miles to visit the Mark Twain House in Hartford which included an overnight stay. Finding the house was frustrating. There are no signs pointing you to the house. We arrived 90 minutes early and were refused an earlier tour even though there was room on the next tour. No explanation was given except that the policy was Tickets purchased on line were not flexible or something like that. As our tour time approached, we went into the gift shop to buy some souvenirs and as we were standing at the cash register the tour guide came in an announced that it was time for our tour. By the time we got out to the designated staging area, we were one minute late (no exaggeration) and the tour left without us. We were able to catch up with our tour tour and the guide was exceptional which pretty much saved the day. It was a better sweet experience but we left with a bad taste in our mouth. In our opinion, the people who manage this site should have better signage to the site, be more flexible about people who arrive early and ask guides to give guests a short grace period before departing on tours. As a side note, a week later, we toured Falling Water, a Frank Lloyd Wright House in western Pennsylvania and we found the site easily because of well place road signs, we were an hour early and were admitted to the next tour (5 minutes after we arrived) and the guides waited 5 minutes before departing on the tour. It was a refreshing experience after our frustating ordeal at the Mark Twain House.
