The place has a good message (farm to table) but the execution is always off somehow. Jay Porter, the owner, is an elitist tool. If you don't like the food, you are to blame. Check Yelp reviews to get a real sense of the place. Writers from outside SD seem to always point to this place as best in SD, but most SD residents despise this place. Overpriced, underserviced, totally overrated.
I've never had a perfect meal here.

The menu is insane and the food is top quality. I tried one of their bitter beers which they have a large selection of and that was an expirience in its own. Very unique tasting style of beer. My party left stuffed and satisfied.

You want to like the Linkery. It's a sustainable restaurant that highlights local growers. Yet the inconsistency in execution, and the mandatory 18% gratuity make the restaurant more famous for what comes out of the owner's mouth rather than its kitchen. Still a worthy spot for your night out, if for no other reason than to support a restaurant whose philosophy is sound.

I'm not sure I get it. They fuse uncommon flavorings into their sausages, flavors like Indian curry. These different sausages are by far and large the most popular items on the menu. And while they may taste good, the cost to taste ratio is too rich for my palette. Maybe that's it, maybe I'd have to be a sausage connoisseur to appreciate what I was given. But then again, the rest of the group I was with didn't go crazy over their items either.
They buy locally daily and support the community in that way. A byproduct of this is that the menu changes daily. The service is respectful, warm, and down-to-earth. They have a back room of sorts that is perfect for group gatherings. So this place has its merits and uses. I just won't be back for the food alone.

I've lived in San Diego for nearly 6 years and have never had a "favorite" restaurant. But after my first visit to The Linkery I'm a huge fan. The "Farm to Kitchen" food is so fresh and absent of processing and chemicals that you can indulge and not feel like someone murdered your stomach. But the BEST is their beer list! Can't wait to go back again.

I really enjoy their cheese plate appetizer after a hard day of work. Their hamburgers are worth a try also. Good place for company gatherings.

horrible service has turned me off this place for ever. I've walked out on three separate occasions after waiting for more than 20 minutes for a waiter to bring water or take drink orders... The food just isn't good enough to put up with the aggravation.

Great cask beers. They have a meat smoke house in the back lined with glass so you can check out their processes. Really cool interior, its in the hippest of hip zones in North Park. Their Heart Attack fries are delicious.

$$$$$$ Too expensive for what you get and the sub-par service. Be aware they automatically add an 18% gratuity, which they do not post, nor tell you about beforehand.
We were greeted almost immediately at our table, we needed a minute... well that minute took about 5-7 minutes. Our waitress was nice and polite, but not attentive. When we got our bill, I noticed we were over-charged for our fries. (substituting fries instead of chips was supposed to be 2.50 OUCH! but they charged us 3.50) Our waitress did not appear to be coming back to allow us to pay. I had to go to the host, who went and found her. She said no one had ever noticed the over-charge on the fries... She said she took them off so we wouldn't be charged at all. Nice huh? Well that's not actually what she did, she took off one of them, not both. We were not offered drinks (the water was good) and we were not offered a high chair for my toddler. I had to request one when halfway through our meal when I saw someone else get one. When you go here, expect slow service and expect to pay a lot. Two meals and one kids meal was close to $50. I do not recommend The Linkery.

For a place that makes their own bread, sauerkraut and cures their own meat, I was excited to order their reuben. BIG GIANT disappointment - -I plan to write them with some well intended feedback. BUT in the meantime, the bread is way too thick and extremely skimpy on the sauerkraut and meat. Not sure why I didn't turn it back to them - every bite of meat had too much gristle to chew, so had to spit it out. Not enough sauerkraut to even taste - - I'm just shaking my head in disbelief as I write this. NO WAY is this sandwich worth $15 - I would personally be embarrassed to serve their little round chocolate dessert cookies... So far this place is 2 good experiences out of 4 - not consistent. Sorry guys.
