Wonderfully open and airy atmosphere built in the remains of an old gristmill. Rustic and quaint. Great place for drinks, romantic dinner, or just a nite out. Service was on par, they noticed when your drinks were low and very knowledgeable, with great recommendations.

Went back a year later and just as good!

The food, the service, even the environment...
There's always something great to enjoy. Whether it's having a classic or trying something new. Or enjoying the grand view of what's in front. The food doesn't have much in flavor, though it has the taste of health and naturalness. Furniture wise, the chairs have a hard wood feeling that feels 'hard' on you, but its well polished surfacing makes for a comfy comeback. For the table... No need to say, it's just a table. And the walkthrough/entrance leading to multiple areas brings you great sense of country perception. What's really amazing being this place found a formula that works to its potential and the preservation of this structure. And yes, the drink selection is lackluster (Just like most restaurants these days), but I can always go with a nice glass of water. This is the place to stop by if visiting Gruene, and I wish everybody luck!

This restaurant is unique and a wonderful spot to try. It appears to get busy early though, so prepare to wait. Definitely worth waiting for an outside seat in the river. While you wait enjoy the lovely side garden and bar. Recommend the onion rings and Texas torpedos. The ribs were the best I have ever had as well, the meat truly fell off the bone

Yum

Great restaurant in a small historic town. Outside seating with views of the Guadalupe river. Local foods, bbq ribs, chicken fried steak with gravy etc. The wait is super long on the weekends, but worth it. They have an outside bar and live music.

Nice experience as always. Late lunch with my son, mom and her husband. They have been here numerous times but only my second. First time was a good experience and I requested we go again. Short wait time of about 10 mins but it was nice outside and they had the fire pit and outdoor heaters going. Seated near a window, exact same table as my last visit. Onion rings for appetizer, lightly battered with a pepper taste. I ordered the grilled chicken spinach salad. They have a different dressing of vinaigrette so I ordered on the side and no olives. A little disappointingly as the normal spinach salad comes with the hot bacon dressing.

My son ordered the grilled chicken ceaser salad, mom had the grilled chicken salad and her husband got the burger. All were good sized, the salads were enough for 2 meals that the three of us took them home for later.

1 water, a pop and 2 teas and the bill was $54 before tip. Definitely a favorite place of mine. Nice to sit by the windows and see outside. In summer months the screen are open. They do get busy so be prepared for a bit of a wait. Lots of shops nearby to visit before or after and work off that meal. Our server, Bailey was very attentive and even made a special trip back to make sure I liked the dressing. That along with plenty of refills on each drink.

Love this place! Although, it was painful to watch the staff secure the curtain divider up! Maybe get an electric one?
Justin took great care of us. Ambience overall is superb and the food as always is excellent! Must visit if you haven't been!

The service was GREAT we chose to eat outside in an enclosed heated area on this trip and was joined by a stray river cat. We were okay with it. If you don't like cats just eat inside by the fireplace!

Food and drinks were fabulous- the only downside is that it's not air conditioned and it's brutal during Texas summer. Some tables are directly under fans, however, we were outside in a small enclosed room and there was no cross breeze for fan- we sweat throughout the entire meal, it wasn't pleasant.

Outdoor music, misting fans, drinks while you wait then delicious food and great atmosphere! Sirloin was cooked to perfection, Gruene beans were delicious, and the chicken Acapulco had just the right amount of spiciness with pico.

The food was great, seasoned well and the ribs were tender and moist. The cole slaw was awesome with a hint of bell pepper. The atmosphere was nice and rustic, true to its history. The service was wonderful from the time we arrived to the time we left. We had a wonderful experience and will go again. RHY a very satisfied customer.

Over the years, we've eaten here several times and always great service, great food, and we always sat outside (weather permitting) for the scenery and ambiance. We've taken several friends and family members here when we lived in Texas (we lived in the Plano area) but we would drive down to our lot in the Bar K Estates and then a short trip down to Gruene which I love that little town as well. Everyone still talks about the food and the service and always want to go back. Great atmosphere, great service, and excellent food.

Absolutely by far my favorite restaurant...in Texas lol!! My husband and I live north of Houston, and we are more than happy to drive the 3+ hours down to Gruene to enjoy a meal here. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but I think it would be safe to assume that there isn't any thing on the menu that the most picky of eaters wouldn't enjoy! I highly recommend trying the onion rings and/or the Texas torpedoes as an appetizer!

Overpriced for the food you get. Served undercooked chicken with the excuse of cartilage and tendons being in the chicken. Another friend needed to return their steak as it was extremely rare instead of medium rare. They reheated the same steak and gave it back to him. The steak tips steak was more like Salisbury patties. Overall, a major lack of seasoning present in all meals. I doubt any salt touched any of our meals. Another friend asked for steamed veggies and instead received veggies that were either blanced or maybe just nuked in a microwave briefly. Service was adequate considering a large group was being trained that day. It was noticeable how all servers (and management) seemed very young. Generally not an issue in itself, but something that suggests extremely high turn over.

It was my first time here and it was about 1 hr wait. I wanted to try the fire roasted chicken but they were out. My kids chose fruits as a side but they ran out. It was super packed with people but had a good waiter. Must be a super popular spot I guess. Food is okay.

This place is a must visit when in the area. The atmosphere, food and service are excellent! The view from the deck is beautiful. We had the queso and chips as an appetizer and it was fresh and delicious. I had the grilled chicken on sourdough roll sandwich and it was huge and very tasty. Our waitress was new and she was so helpful and sweet.
