Absolutely fantastic facility. Many interactive displays in the learning area, and our tour guide Melissa was informative and polite. She answered all of our questions, even going out of her way to get answers to things she didn't know for certain.

It was interesting to get to see the dome in the process of being pressure washed. It's currently half silver and half black from tarnish. They explained that the fully does not affect operation, it just looks nicer when it is clean.

If you visit Puert Rico, do not forget to spend a morning to visit the Arecibo Observatory. In the middle of the forest the observatory appears majestic, with the second largest natural disk in the world. It also has an interesting museum with meteor samples and everything! You will only need an hour to make the visit, but it is worth the trip.

In 1974 -1975 I lived in nearby Vega Baja. I was the daughter of a construction engineer who was building one of the first pharmacutical plants down there and was priveleged to attend an English speaking school where the kids of quite a few of the scientists at Arecibo became my buddies. On two or three occasions said parents allowed us school kids into parts of the observatory normally kept off limits to regular visitors. Needless to say those were field trips beyond comparison as was the whole adventure of living in Puerto Rico with an endless sugarcane field for a back yard!

I am not a fan of the golden eye movie, but has anyone seen the movie Contact with Jodie Foster? The Arecibo telescope plays a big part in that movie and way more dramatic. I suggest anyone who is planning to visit the observatory should first watch that movie!

This is a tremendous experience, simple and fast but impressive, with the regular price is enough for the normal viewer, the place is clear, the service is a sweetness, they should do something better than those long stairs to get from the parking lot to the center, but if you need and ask for help they take you in one of their vehicles. The view is beautiful, once you're there you do not want to leave. They do the best they can in their area, but the roads to get there are bad.

The biggest radio observatory on this side. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, preferably sneakers since some of the areas can be slippery due to the weather. A must if you are visiting PR!!!

Very interesting is the installation of the Radar de Arecibo. I recommend that the roads be improved to arrive and that the Director of Highways install the signs that Maria took.

A bit pricey, but if you are in PR, it's worth an hour stop. The educational displays inside are quite nice, and seeing the architecture in person is quite impressive.

Oddly their gift shop was understocked and significantly lacking in Arecibo Observatory branded items.

We opted for the VIP tour for an extra $15. There were 3 of us and it basically includes a short drive to visit the control room. In our case it provided an opportunity to talk with the operator on duty and ask more detailed questions. Even with that, I wish there was more detailed information but I think most would find it sufficient. The observatory is very close to one of the cave/river guide companies. Driving around the surrounding smaller roads was worth the effort as this is Puerto Rico's karst geologic province. The National Park cave was still closed.

Really interesting. Learned a lot. (Take the VIP tour). Short movie was really good. Didn't know it was originally built to do upper atmospheric research, not radio astronomy-- that was only added relatively recently. Museum is a mini science museum that is great for kids. Lots of hands on stuff!

Spectacular, a huge scientific facility surrounded by jungle, with highly trained guides and a fairly well-stocked store. From here we look as a human race for someone on another planet to respond to us. Very interesting experience.

Absolutely amazing! It s just as great in the movies also. The size of it doesn t really come to mind until you see it in person. It s worth it to go there and see the place. The tour was nice and so were the tour guides. They gave us all the information we really needed to know about the place. I would come back and experience it again
