The telescope is amazing and they have a good video that explains some of the history of the telescope and its purpose.

I was very disappointed in the people there explaining information about the telescope, physics and astronomy. The people working there couldn't answer my questions, and they didn't know the fundamental laws of physics that explain how things work in astronomy. They had no idea what conservation of angular momentum was. They really need to take a few physics classes before working there. I am a physicist and I teach physics at a university level at Brigham Young University.

Love, love this place. Was here when I was little and then last week with my husband. We're already looking for flight in mid February for our 12th Anniversary and this is already one of the tours we're doing but the VIP Tour.

Great place to visit. Don't get real excited for this life changing experience because it is not there. That being said it is very interesting and definitely a must stop if you have never been before.

Puerto Rico's iconic radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory completely collapsed. Cables supporting the structure snapped and caused damage in November. The telescope s 900-ton receiver platform fell more than 400 feet, destroying the massive reflector dish Tuesday.

The Arecibo Observatory's big radio dish was the 2nd largest in the world but was recently slated for demolition after November's cable failure. The observatory was featured in the 1997 Sci-Fi movie 'Contact' and was responsible for many groundbreaking discoveries.

We have been to the observatory several times but always learn something new. It is amazing to see but even more amazing is the high level research that goes on there.

It is also great for kids. There is a gift shop with reasonably priced scientific toys. My kid days are long behind me, but I almost always buy something for my nieces and nephews.

They also have games you can play with models of the telescope.

The place needs some updates to their system and information. More staff could be more available to explain the exhibitions. And for activities they need to be more organized to have control over the public.

I highly recommend you make this a stop while in Puerto Rico. Excellent for educational trips or just family vacation. Driving there is a bit of an adventure but definitely well worth it! And when you think you finally made it... be prepared for a good hike from the parking lot to the observatory. The view is amazing.

Worth the trek into the hills!

Worth the trek into the hills!

We parked and hiked up the stairs to the dish, after declining to ride in the suv they were using to shuttle people up the steep hill. From the parking lot (the sun) was a scale model of the solar system along the steps. Pretty neat feature. Right after paying you walk through a neat little hands on physics, space, type learning center. Mostly kid oriented, but I had fun with some of the contraptions as well. There was an auditorium, but we skipped it since we had the baby with us. You then walk out to a guy making hot dogs, and a giant crater in the mountains filled with concrete panels that make up the reflector of a massive radio telescope.

This device is how we know definitively the Earth is flat.

Great experience. Loved the radar! Amazing engineering feat. And the science was fascinating - lots of gadgets for kids (young & old) to play with and learn. The guides were all super helpful and friendly too! I'd give it 7 stars if I could!

Nice tour and video...you learn a lot. The observatory is really cool. The walk up to the place is not that great. You have to park and walk 10 minutes up a hill therefore wear sneakers. It would be nice if they would pick you up in golf carts.

One of my very favorite places to see in PR. The VIP tour was very worth the extra fee for me. We got to see the control room and the scientists doing their work. The museum was really neat.
The staff and guides were very friendly and very knowledgeable.
It s a bit of a walk uphill from the parking lot to the observatory. It gets hot up there so drink lots of water.
I was really enjoying my nerd day out but it s not required to be a card-carrying geek to enjoy this achievement of humanity.

I can't remember the date I first visited it, I just know that at this point, I imagine I will have been there at least five times.

What I can assure you is that I have always brought someone, be it a family member or a friend. All for the interest of showing others the importance of the Arecibo mountains for the world.

Last Sunday, July 9, 2017, my wife and this server, we met this marvel to a marriage with their small children, Venezuelan friends who have made Puerto Rico their great home ... Welcome to Arecibo ... welcome to Borinquen Bella!

We did the basic tour. Very nice museum, with many exhibits for young and old. There is a video about the telescope followed by a short walk outside to see the telescope itself. You get a nice view from the observation area. We spent maybe 45 minutes there. They also sell some snacks. You can take pictures, but they tell you your cell phone needs to be in airplane mode or "it will be destroyed". Apparently something to do with the radio waves. Quite few steps up from the parking lot.

The treatment to the visitor has improved a lot. He no longer has to climb the hill that takes out the air completely. There is a tour guide who explains the purpose of the Radar. They also have VIP Guides that take you close to the Radar. There is also lodging.
