Sun Design Remodeling Review

I am a HUGE fan of Sun Design! The first time that we worked with them was over 15 years ago. We were ready to have a deck built, but not just any deck, and of course, Jeremy was the designer at that time and I remember how he went about designing it so that it looked like "part of the house" - It is beautiful. We recently refurbished it, and it looks absolutely beautiful!
The most recent project was a full kitchen remodel - Katie worked closely with us on designing it - We finally came up with the perfect kitchen! Gabe was our lead and he was so responsible, dependable, honest, and really cared about what we thought and wanted to make sure that we were happy with the progress and the final results. The entire process was great, Bob Gallagher met with us a few times, and Jeremy, Katie and Mike also stayed involved.
Everyone in the office is extremely friendly, professional and care about their customers. We fully trusted everyone!

Over the years I have used Sun Design to add a great room, remodel a kitchen and remodel a bathroom. They do excellent work and stand behind everything they do. They are not inexpensive but deliver a first rate finished product that stands the test of time.

Sun Design did a major Aging in Place project for us, involving our master bath with an enlarged, curb-less shower and installation of an elevator. Besides being more useful, the results were beautiful. We would no longer be living in the home we love without Sun Design.

Furthermore, everyone was a pleasure to deal with. Our primary contacts were Bob Galhahger, the President of the company, and Ericka Williams, Lead Designer. Both had great ideas, were very patient with us and always easy to contact.

To make matters even better, they ve declared us part of their family and did some minor changes in our kitchen that ordinarily would be too small for a company like Sun to handle. I was so happy not to have to arrange for plumbing, carpentry, and countertop installation from three different vendors on my own.

Sun Design did a great job in remodeling my Master Bathroom into a relaxing environment. Even the work was done in 2018, the beauty and care still holds up. I enjoy it everyday. They did a great job in design, execution and cleanup.

10/10 would highly recommend Sun Design. We found our kitchen layout was too small and wasn't working for us. We told Sun Design what our issues were and what was important to us, and their amazing design team created the kitchen of our dreams. It turned into a whole first floor transformation, moving kitchen, dining room, and living room around to a configuration that worked best for us.

Throughout the entire design process, we were able to customize every aspect and detail, down to the exact finishing touches. The contract we received and signed off on was extremely accurate and left no surprises. We had no additional costs besides what changes we actively requested.

The construction team was highly skilled, and the weekly walk through meetings kept us well informed and up to date on the progress. Any questions we had were promptly answered throughout the process.

We were thoroughly impressed with the team's ability to keep the construction site and the rest of our home clean. Plastic barriers were installed to protect non construction areas, and worked very well.

Sun Design did their due diligence and research on our existing utilities and construction, to ensure all items we chose, from fixtures to flooring, worked in our home.

Every week Sun Design requested feedback from us, 1-4, stating they always strive to be a 5. Sun Design definitely exceeded all of our expectations, we will definitely use them for any future home renovation work we have!

Sun Design is truly a family and they understand that your house is a home, not just another project. They truly respect your time and comfort throughout the whole process from start to finish. Bob, Maggie, and Yesica have made our remodeling dreams a reality since we have decided to age in place. They are extremely knowledgeable, reliable, conscientious, thoughtful, and punctual. Sun Design completed a very successful remodeling project by putting together an in-house design build team. The team came up with the most appropriate design given the specifics of the existing house and our lifestyle. This approach allowed the design and building professionals to work together with us (the homeowners) in a collaborative and cooperative manner.
The team of architect and building professionals carefully listened to what we wanted to change and then proposed one or more creative design solutions that were in line with our expectations. The Sun Design team was very candid and clear in their communications with us so that misunderstandings were avoided. This allowed us, in concert with the Sun Design Team, to realistically determine the feasibility of various design options and effectively plan the work.
The entire staff was second to none; customer service was exceptional. They were problem-solvers throughout the process and demonstrated a consistent willingness to meet our expectations and attention to detail. The end result was an on-budget and on-schedule project that exceeded our expectations.

Sun Design did an addition for us (screened in porch and new master bedroom above it) and it could not have gone any smoother from start to finish and throughout the warranty period. Both Craig and JR were easy to work with and also have in our home - they were professional and responded quickly to any concerns or changes we needed to make. Would highly recommend!

Had a complex water leakage issue damaging windows overlooking deck initially attributed to failure of awning mounting to home. Jeff came out and correctly diagnosed leak caused by faulty J channel installation, and expertly repaired what baffled two other contractors. We are must satisfied with Sun Design's responsiveness and very good repair job. Would unconditionally recommend them. Thanks, Jeff and the office team who reacted so well to weather issues allowing us to change day and appt times..really good job!

The project started and finished on time even though we had some weather problems. The workers were very cognizant of my needs and started and finished their work at reasonable hours. My weekends were undisturbed!

It was also helpful that someone was reachable in case of a problem. I am still happy with the design and work. It is especially favorable that they follow up after completion of the work for some time.

They worked with us to design and build a raised, covered porch/deck to replace the minimal deck that came with the house (40+ years ago). we absolutely love the result and enjoy it daily, rain or shine. Besides taking care of all the permits and permission from our Conservancy, they assigned a contact, Fahad, who spent lots of time with us to make sure everything went smoothly and we were happy. he was great - personable and professional, and we felt like we were his only priority. Sun Design will be our first call for any future remodeling project.

We had originally hired a different contractor for our kitchen remodel project, what a mistake that ended up being. That "other" contractor gutted our kitchen and told us many lies in order to abscond with our money (tens and thousands of dollars) and left us hanging without a kitchen for almost one year. You can imagine how distraught we were with no kitchen and the loss of all that money.

A business friend of mine recommended we get an estimate from Sun Design because they are an honest company and do beautiful work. We interviewed Sun Design and 3 other contractors to take over the kitchen remodel project. We ultimately hired Sun Design because the "runner up" company had misrepresented their stated contract price... increasing that cost by $25,000 plus.

Sun Design and our sales person, Paul Mooney provided outstanding service and held our hand through the remodel process. They were intuitive to the stress we were under and accommodated our unique circumstances by going above and beyond. I felt like I was their only client because of the attention to detail and quick response times...also to mention how helpful and friendly their staff members were. Come to find out later, going above and beyond is how they treat all of their clients... it was not unique to my situation.

Here are some of the reasons we went with Sun Design and why I highly recommend them above any choice out there. They are absolutely honest with price, time constraints and meeting deadlines. Sun Design does high quality work and they provide an in-house designer & other staff to help the homeowner with design layout features, choosing cabinets, flooring, fixtures, tile, granite, etc. These people help you select what YOU want by providing guidance and reassurance throughout the process. This is especially helpful for homeowners who don't know the latest fashion trends or have difficulty with color choices. Sun Design is conscientious in helping you to maximize your home value in addition to creating spaces in your home that you will absolutely love! They are extremely patient and allow you several design reviews to make certain you like everything and the design flow works well for your family and living space. They use a 3-D computer program throughout the design process. At first when they told me about this feature, I thought it was just fluff. Boy was I WRONG. The 3-D program allows you to see your project as though you were sitting in that room. This was the only company that I interviewed which had this feature. The other contractors had you looking at a flat piece of paper. I was shocked at the difference the 3-D effect provided for making the right design layout and selections. It was not fluff BUT WAS certainly a great tool and resource.

We have two other upcoming projects on our list of things to do, a bathroom and back patio remodel. After our exceptional experience with this company during our kitchen remodel, we don't have to search for any other contractor. Having recently completed a kitchen renovation by Sun Design, we were totally impressed by the care and attention they took with our project. The work area was cordoned off with plastic with zippered doors to keep out the dirt and dust while allowing easy access to the area. Every night the cleanup was meticulous and they treated our home as their own. Jamie the manager of the project was always on top of things and we always felt confident with his work. Mike, Jamie s supervisor, also ensured that things were proceeding to our liking and always willing to respond to any concerns we may have had. From the design process with Katie to the final completion with the team led by Jamie, we could not have asked for a better experience. Our kitchen is beautiful.

We hired Sun Design to bring our worn 1940 townhouse to a crisp, classic, full function home. The designers, decorators and craftsman were professional and skilled. The level of detail was amazing, right down to having all the screws in the electrical covers turned in the same direction. Sun Design met the project deadline and budget. We trusted them with our home and they came through. I would highly recommend them.

We engaged Sun Design to perform a full home renovation a couple years ago and have been so happy with the results. Working with Bob, Ericka, Rob and Brian has been an absolute pleasure. We added an elevator to our home and from beginning to end, it was a painless process. My 89-year-old mother recently experienced a health event, and we contacted Sun Design to do an aging in place bathroom remodel for her. Everyone at Sun Design was great to work with from my first conversation to set the process in motion, to the design and product selection that made our outcome not only beautiful but a look that is uniquely ours, to our amazing project manager, to all of the supporting team members, the trades, and the warranty team.

Although the whole team is amazing, it was our project manager, Jamie, that made the remodel an especially great experience for me and my mother. This was my first experience with a remodel project. Jamie explained what was going to happen during each step of the process, so I was never surprised by anything. In fact, he generally answered my questions before I even had a chance to ask them! He was patient and kind, even when I asked him non-remodel home maintenance questions or asked questions that he had already repeatedly explained to me. He even fixed and/or looked at several things when he was here and not just things that I asked about.

Not only was Jamie a pleasure to work with, his work is of the highest quality. He has great depth of knowledge, pride in his work, and truly cares how his work impacts his clients. Even though I was his primary client contact for this project, he never forgot that the remodel was for my mother. He made it a priority to be sure she was happy with the project and, especially, comfortable with how all the grab bars and other items were positioned.

The entire project was handled with meticulous care from start to finish and turned out beautifully! Although Sun Design may be on the higher side of the price scale, with the quality of their work and depth of the team I would make the same decision to use them again.

We loved our experience with Sun Design. From the first time Bob walked our space we knew they were the ones to use. We gutted our basement to make it more functional for us. Bob, Maggie, and Jamie listened to what we wanted, not what was easy or typical basement remodel. Others tried to convince us of things we didn't need (no wet bar or game rooms necessary). Maggie found design ideas that fit us, and Jamie managed our project on-site with expertise, overcoming COVID delays and ensuring our space was well protected and clean each and every day. In the late fall of 2014 we met with Bob one of the owners of Sun Design to help us out remodeling our house in McLean Virginia after almost 6 years being overseas. Sun Design built a large sunroom addition and a deck for us on the back of the house. The county permit process for our project was not your typical process because the new addition would place our home too close to the property line behind the house due to zoning set-back requirements. Sun Design did a wonderful job of overseeing/managing the entire lengthy county special permit process to include representing us at the county special permit hearing prior to the county granting permission to build. Sun Design was very attentive at listening to our ideas for the initial design and along the way for any potential changes. They are very easy to do business with, aim to please, and did a tremendous job at suggesting potential design changes as options throughout the project. The project was completed on-time and was overall a very smooth effort; they know how to project manage their work with attention to detail. We highly recommend Sun Design for any design/build needs!

We used SunDesign for a small remodel in 2015 and were so pleased with the results that we rehired them for a more significant renovation (addition, master bath, kitchen, patio) in 2019. You'll find SunDesign's commitment cannot be matched. Our designer Katie worked extensively to make sure we were completely happy with the plan and that it would fit our budget, before a single hammer swung. And our construction manager Owen smoothly managed every step of production as well. In fact, months after completion, when we had an issue related to a gas line, SunDesign stepped right back in to help us work with the utility and make SURE that the problem was quickly and properly resolved... at no cost to us! A large renovation is a major investment for sure, but we finished on budget and ahead of schedule. Highly recommend!

We would recommend Sun Design for any/all home remodeling. Thorough, innovative, punctual, friendly staff was wonderful to work with through the whole process. Three years later we are grateful for taking on a whole first floor remodel. SD knocked it out of the park!

We are still in the middle of our project but I can't say enough good things about Sun Design. Super responsive during this weird time of Covid, we are very pleased with the design process and everyone we've come into contact with. Ericka, our designer, is a particular stand out. She had tons of great ideas but was also a great listener, and found ways to balance our ideas with her innovative ideas. I can't wait to see it all complete!

Update: Besides the projects mentioned below, more recently we have had Jeff Nichols and his Forever Home team do work including replacing doors, fixing and replacing drywall and a few other smaller repair and maintenance projects. We're huge fans of Sun Design.

Sun Design has done several projects for us - including kitchen, addition/renovation of a sunroom, bathroom, basement and a fabulous front porch. They are a pleasure to work with, from design through the actual work. They are careful about scheduling their work and getting done on time. We have had many of their carpenters and others plus their subs in our house - all have been great to deal with and understanding of what a disruption any renovation can be. This is a great company, we highly recommend them.

When we purchased our house the one thing we knew was that the kitchen would have to be redone and fast - the problem was the house posed a challenging layout, we were juggling a toddler, and well we were in the midst of buying and selling and moving a house. Needless to say it was not going to be easy. After calling dozens of companies, and talking to at least half of them we got to Sun Design. Within an hour of meeting with Jon for the design consultation we knew we had found the company to do the work for us. Jon was eager to take on the challenge (lots of small rooms and best-case scenario an L-shaped layout to work with for a kitchen), presented not just ideas on design but also was able to talk function.

Before the project even got off the ground we had to put things on hold and Sun Design was right there and ready to work with us. We got the sense it was not about getting the job started just to get the job done but to really work with us. Once the project started we had a great experience not just with the project lead (Brian) who we saw day in and day out. The subcontractors that came in to do some of the trade work were not only professional but also did quality work. When we ran into a plumbing issue that the home warranty company wouldn t help with and we were told would cost many thousand dollars to fix The subs from Sun took one look at the problem, made a joke about lacking creativity and explained how it was an easy to fix problem and had it fixed before the day was done and for about 1/10th the price the other guy was quoting. One would think that a job site would not be ideal for a house with a toddler and one would be correct - particularly when the project is a full gut kitchen renovation. But the level of effort put forth by the sun team to seal off the construction area and make modifications as needed left us feeling confident in our ability to survive the project with not too much concern.

In the past when a renovation is done the company leaves the site and you never hear from them again. This has not been the case with Sun and it may be one of the most positive aspects of the experience with this company. If you are being realistic no project goes perfectly and as the seasons change things that were perfect after the last nail was hammered suddenly might not be. The Sun team has come out to do a routine checkup, and the warranty team reminds us time and again why we hired them to do the renovation. The work may be small projects but they area always done with professionalism and skill.

At the end of the day we had a lot of options for a design-build company and Sun Design may not have been the cheapest but sometimes you really do get what you pay for. We look back on the project knowing that they were worth every penny spent, not only because the kitchen is beautiful but also because we had a team that we felt comfortable having in our home day in and day out for 3+ months, we have a team that supports us after the project is done, and everyone from the design team to the build team and the warranty team seams genuinely interested in exceeding expectations.

tl/dr - If you are looking for a company to work with I would highly recommend Sun Design. You cannot go wrong with their skill from design to construction to support (warranty) after the project is complete.

Sun Design has done 2 remodeling projects for us, 10 years apart. both have been amazing! the first was a kitchen remodel and a carport to family room transformation. the second was a living room remodel with construction of a powder room. Extremely happy with both, highly recommend Sun Design!

I have worked with Sun Design for over ten years. Their communication and professionalism is above and beyond every time. Customer Satisfaction is always the primary goal!

First of all, our project was very complicated and we had several contractors look at it for their recommendations. To be honest non of them seemed up to the task and seemed perplexed. Basically, we have a deck that is 60ft by 12ft with huge. Pillars supporting our top floor. Our two outer pillars were separating from the top and both of the ends of the deck were curving downward, We contacted Sun Design and was impressEd how competent and professional they approached our problem, we found Bob Gallagher to be reassuring throughout from obtaining the permit which could have been tricky. Sun Design s work crew were excellent as well. As it turned out our posts needed to be jacked up and removed and new posts put in. Our original posts were almost 30 yrs old and had become rotten and had termites. They installed the new posts according to the current requirements so they do not actually go into the ground. We felt extra confident that we chose the right company to tackle our problem. Not only. Was Sun Design competent, but recognizing the situation, they wasted no time in starting the project. We highly recommend Sun Design. We feel that they are very reputable, honest, knowledgeable and professional.

Sun Design renovated our circa-1974 kitchen and incorporated the adjoining den so we could achieve a more open floor plan. While we were at it, we also had them gut and re-do our screened-in porch. Maggie, our designer, went above and beyond in designing our project. Her advice and professionalism were greatly appreciated. We threw her a curve ball early in the process - we needed to figure out how to incorporate an 8-foot tall hand-painted menu sign from a favorite SC restaurant - and she did an incredible job figuring out how to have this as a focal point in a kitchen with 7'10" walls. The completed renovation is fabulous, and well-worth the 18 year wait.

We have used Sun Design twice! We have built a kitchen in 2013 and a secon floor a few years later.
We did not want to tear down our old house, we wanted to use the old charm of the house and make it functional and modern. Sun Design listened very carefully to us and came up with an amazing plan.
They built the second floor in about 4 months, 2 of them we were able to live in the house! Thus saving us mony for renting another place during the construction.
Sun Design helped us to build our dream house. We get compliments about our house very often, even from complete strangers!

We are very pleased with SunDesign and our bedroom/bathroom/closet renovation.
