Three stars only because most of the time the line to get in this place is crazy long. However once you get inside the drinks are good and the music is pretty good. Nice neighborhood watering hole.

In Oakland for a conference and hit Somar when the gorgeous jazz hit my ears while I was waddling down the street. Amazing bartenders who were really loving and smiling. Kick ass wine! I'm going back tonight for empanadas! Anytime I'm in Oakland, I am coming to this damn place.

All I got to say. It you looking for a good fight,ghetto people's wealth they are. White,blacks,Mexico,Chinese. You get the point. It a hot mess almost of the time. After leaving the club. Lol...

This place is pretty fun for happy hour. The bartenders will make you a pretty creative drink if you tell them what you like. At night this place is super fun and doesn't always have a cover. Good djs lots of music. They have a small food menu that usually include empanadas and one or two other small bites. The food is good and typically sells out after a few hours.

Good night life experience for the younger crowd. Area not so nice though. Keep your eyes open.

I love this bar. It's always packed with gun people and the people that work there are awesome.

Great venue to attend whenever I am downtown Oakland.

Passed this spot on Friday night and opted for the bar next door which is also good. The bar next door did not have a cover charge to get in and it was already packed by 10pm which fit our mood perfectly. The next day we asked around Oakland and someone highly recommended Somar as a good spot for cocktails with good music so we decided to give it a try. Came here on a girls' night out on a Saturday night and paid for the $5 to get in and was not disappointed. When we 1st arrived they had just opened so there was barely anyone inside so we opted to have a drink and vibe until more people care. Within thirty minutes the dance floor was packed with 25 to 35 year olds. No one was shy about socializing and getting on the dancefloor. The DJ was particularly good and he played old school snoop dog with new Cali mixes. The Bartenders were attentive and the drinks were just right.
Pros:
1. DJ had a good feel of his audience and played music to match the mood
2. Separate bathroom based on gender with 3 stalls in the female side
3. DJ were not shy with the alcohol
4. Right amount of seating area
Cons:
1. Dancefloor was on the smaller side

Fuze is the man and spins the best sound here every Thursday night. Come enjoy!

Don t step outside without a stamp if you got in before 10 PM or you might accidentally subject yourself to paying for cover. Water station mid bar. Some seating but a lot of counter and bar space. Dance floor is small but suitable for large groups.

Great drinks, happy hour pricing not so bad. Lots of room vs your typical tiny bars. Very enjoyable.

Great bar, but never leave your card open tab, some of their bartender would over charge your card, it happened to me twice!

Small with a very narrow bar area. Nothing special about the decor and I'm not a fan of the music (except for the Motown) or sound system. Friendly and attentive bartenders.

One of the best places to meet new people and have fun. The drinks are Amazing and so are the Bartenders. Great atmosphere, you are guaranteed a night of fun when you show up.

Every time I have gone here it was always super lit I can t wait to go back now that I know they still open.

This place is lit on Fridays after a long week of work.

Just a dope bar that has a great variety of music. It s like a bar + club fusion. I don t go out in Oakland much but decided to explore a bit for my 30th with a large group of friends and we never left Somar. I *think* cover starts at 10pm so get in before then? Crowd was diverse, decor was understated, drinks were reasonably priced (from what I recall - my mates bought all the rounds ), and everyone seemed to be having a great time!

One of my favorite bars in Oakland. Had a long day at the office? Get the Ricky Bobby trust me folks. This place get LIT past 8pm and before you know it people start dancing.There's usually food outside too. Shout out to Larry for always taking care of me.

Mike is the best! Friendly and genuine - I love the diverse crowd and he keeps the place fun & classy...

Thursday is the night. DJ Fuze and Sake one will have you feel like you are 18 again. You will dance till you drop. Vibe is amazing and very casual. I love it there.

Pretty chill at happy hour but gets busy at night. Great place for dancing and hip hop music. They usually have a DJ. Feels like a lounge before it gets late. There are a few TVs if you're trying to watch the game. The drinks are good and there is a reasonable happy hour. The food menu is small and typically sells out fast. There is free spicy popcorn!

I recently participated as a vendor for an event at the hotel and was treated poorly by a few staff members. I'm not sure of the specific guy's name, but he was a bald caucasian guy who worked at the bell desk, I believe.

Great bartenders. Chill vibe. Good DJs on Thursday/Friday.

I feel like a dinosaur with all of the changes in Oakland sometimes. But Somar always feels like home.

Had their Somar West cocktail. It is my new favorite cocktail in the Bay Area!!!

Gotta catch them on the right night. Depending on the bartenders, I've either really enjoyed or hated the experience. My female bartenders have never let me down. Fun spot to go with drink specials. Ask the bartenders for recommendations.

Love the music. Space is tight but the music makes up for it.

It's OK not great. It's an updated version of churchwards in Alameda. Very small.... Know that the minute you walk inside you'll be shoulder to shoulder rubbing against people. As far as people always more guys than girls, hipster environment and the few times that I have been here there's usually more blacks than others. Music is mostly hip hop... 80% no other variations what so ever so you know what types of crowds that attracts. Dressing is business casual... That's was nice and 10 dollar cover. Drinks are fairly priced... So overall it's just an OK place.

Love the place! Didn't like how I was in and went out to smoke only to be told to get back in line. I was told I could just go back inside, wouldn't have smoked if that was the case. That was the first time that happened though so maybe will be coming back.

They usually have an energetic crowd and the music is good.

I went to this bar in 2014 ordered the empanada, Never had empanadas before. it was good maybe because I've never had an empanada before. but unfortunately if I was to go back there again, I wonder if the second experience be as good as the first experience. I had to wait a while for one empanada and that was at least a good 30 minutes but it was worth it. Maybe because I was hungry and I wanted to know what it would taste like.

The bartender and his drinks get five stars. Otherwise we weren't that impressed. More of a place for the young kids.
