I was charged over $1200 for a room that did not contain the amenities advertised. It was also in poor condition with peeling paint, dirty grout, rugs with curling edges and scuffed and worn furniture. When I called the front desk to be moved to the room I booked, they no longer had it available - even though I paid for it - and treated me condescendingly. Very disappointed. This is not a luxury experience.

Husband and I like coming here when we can for dinner. They are consistently good, with lots of flavorful food offerings. The Ceebu Jenn is wonderful. I like the Yassa poulet and the riz au cari with lamb, but honestly, I haven't had a bad dish here yet. I haven't been for drinks or live music, but that should happen one day.

Excellent hotel in an excellent location on the beach. Our room was comfortably decorated in Cape Cod style and featured a comfortable tub, shower, and a fully stocked fridge with all sorts of snacks. The nightly cost is high, but a stay at Shutters is ideal for special occasions.

A friend was visiting from Colorado, and I wanted to bring her to the beach right away since that's the thing she misses the most about California from her childhood. Neither of us had spent much time in Santa Monica, so I decided to take her someplace new. It was a typically gorgeous late afternoon when we arrived, and after saying hello to the ocean, we started walking towards the pier - and came upon the most charming, inviting ediface if a cafe/bar and decided it was the perfect spot to have a celebratory drink and a bite to eat. Shutters by the Sea's glisteninly white interior was every bit as lovely inside as it was outide, and we sat at the bar where we were welcomed by rhe friendly bartender who whipped up two Grey Goose martinis in no time. We still felt like we were taking in the beach since every window looked right out to the ocean and we ordered a watermelon salad that was extraordinary and some delicious guacamole & chips. It was perfection - a bargain at double the price.

The hotel was wonderful, although parking is tough, if you do not valet but the charge is fair given the fact the public parking is 14 dollars and valet is 15$. The view is wonderful because is right on the beach side.

The staff are very helpful and the grounds are amazing. The pool area is really nice. There are a lot of deck chairs but not enough for everyone which can be a concern during peak periods.

The restaurants are great. 1 Pico has a great Mediterranean style menu. The Coast is the brunch restaurant below 1 Pico. The Coast is amazing for big or small groups.

The location is fabulous. On the beach, like the name implies. It's close to the Santa Monica pier and has boardwalk access.

The only thing preventing me from giving Shutters 5 stars was our room. Our room was good but was a little beat up. We had wallpaper from the 80's, there was poorly repaired damage to the floor in our bathroom, our safe didn't work properly, and the showers are very small.

These issues are not deal-breakers. The rest of our room was nice. I would highly recommend staying here. It's a very nice hotel and well worth the experience.

Room not ready at 3:30 pm, so sat on the deck for a drink and never got served even after getting up to ask for service.

4:20 pm room still not ready

4:45 pm room finally available.

Paid for an ocean front room but is overlooking the roof of the hotel and a parking lot. Have stayed here several times before for the same rate and was actually ocean front. Really disappointed.

This place was such a beautiful hotel.. The rooms were very clean and restrooms as well. I loved the whirlpool tub and that they had a TV in there so you can relax in the tub. They had a nice little bar area. Santa Monica pier is in walking distance.

A wonderful hotel that is actually located ON the beach in Santa Monica. The views outside are impeccable. But also add the ambiance of the interior (casual and upscale) makes it a wonderful destination for cocktail and a meal

Food was good but service and understanding of their error in the order we placed was exhausting. In the food service industry the food runner should clearly be able to comprehend English

Very nice hotel, overlooking the beach 5 minutes from the pier and Muscle Beach. Common spaces very well maintained and tastefully furnished. Very nice rooms, large and with attention to detail. Very good cuisine and very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent general cleanliness.

Luxurious hotel, I spent one night here and was blown away at all of the amenities in the room. Fully stocked mini bar, balcony with a view of the ocean, television in the spacious bathroom, state of the art shower, and so much more.

Excellent brunch location. Parking looks like a cluster but they have a system that works! Lemon Ricotta pancakes were divine! You can ask for a table by the window but there's views from almost every table. Friendly service. A bit pricey but if $16 mimosas don't bother you, you'll be delighted!!

he hotel is absolutely beautiful! I had the pleasure of eating at their restaurant, " The Coast " and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. First off, the hostess had zero attitude and as she sat me down, she broke a glass which was below my table. She didn't even apologize or bothered to clean up til later! then someone out of no where showed up with coffee and left. I turned around to ask for cream and no was around. I waited 25 minute for a waiter. Finally, " Fernando " showed up and didn't even say hi! he got our order and whatever we ordered, he would slam it on the table. Don't really know what was going on yesterday. I spoke to Randy Diamond, who I was told that is the hotel manager but he was the director of rooms. Really nice guy. He apologized but don't know how much more he could do. The damage was already done. Also, try not to valet. Once you get your car, you have to wait for others to leave ahead of you, which in my case I waited 10 minutes! not a good experience

Stayed here for nights this summer. Overall disappointed with several aspects of the hotel.

Firstly praise to some waiting staff, very good service indeed. Secondly some of the hotels amenities such as the lounge were very good too. However, there were too many niggling issues that marred our stay. We booked the hotel as the review score was the highest out of the two 5 star hotels in Santa Monica.

Firstly, check in staff; was told first of 2 rooms almost ready at 1:50. Would be texted when ready. By 4 pm no message so went to reception to get keys. Our room was in a different block and the way was convoluted. Got stuck so asked pool staff en-route to help. Lady rolled her eyes when we got to second elevator .

Room was well appointed, comfortable, though lighting in bathroom dark at best and putting make up on near impossible. Noise from ac/vent fan to hotel audible all night, constant din. Shutters let light peek through early in mornings so not ideal unless you are a heavy sleeper. Very busy street runs under the hotel and is frequented by very loud sirens of various emergency service vehicles all times of night and day.

Booked a private tour of LA @ $190/hour x4 through concierge. He took our mobile number and would call us when driver arrived. Sadly he went walkabout after booking us and no one called us! We waited for about 45 minutes. Eventually we were told driver here but 20 minutes into our first hour. He had been there for around 25 minutes, but staff couldn t contact us or find us, though we were waiting in the balcony bar. They were calling our room not the arrangement we made when booking through the concierge.

This was the second major staff gaff in 24 hours and really far from a smooth and slick operation that cost us part of our tour. Poor standards.

Breakfast was a shocker for us. First morning had to wait outside the restaurant for 20 minutes! Then when seated found only an American breakfast menu. No choices except the stodge they call breakfast, heavy, big portions, though well cooked and tasty is far from the fayre and variety you would expect at 5 star level. Don t think we ever waited to be sat for breakfast ever before in any hotel we have stayed at anywhere in the world. Wouldn t have been so bad if there was anywhere comfortable to wait.

The Pier. This looks like a great place to go during the evening, but beware, its actually a mini Blackpool! Rammed to the rafters with the kind of people that frequent the promenade at Blackpool; Rough, dodgy looking lower classes from the least desirable parts of LA who now use the Pier as a get-away via the recently opened train from downtown LA. We encountered a stand-off between a guy that looked like he was as high as a kite on crystal meths and security staff. Very violent language and gestures of which our young daughter was subjected to as were within ear-shot and so crowded hard to move away quickly. Very intimidating and not the kind of place that lends its self to where a high class hotel should be located.

We feel that the standards and service of some staff, the room and dining are far from 5 star as we know it in Europe, so its advised that you check out other highly rated hotels before making this your choice if you are of a discerning persuasion. You should also note the beach is very wide and no beach bars are available near the hotel. The sea is cold and looks quite dirty, so consider less highly dense parts of LA if the beach is your thing.

We did find a few good restaurants in downtown Santa Monica, but a few rough ones too, that are closer to the hotel. Electric scooter hire is a hoot and a great way of getting to see the streets and beaches. Uber is also a handy app to have and widely used by the indigenous. Prices are very expensive for everything so bear this in mind as the food and beverage bills quickly mount to a comparable amount to the costs of your room (especially that you are expected to tip a minimum of 15% and an expected 18-20% for all service related purchases.
