This was clearly a 4 star hotel once, however time is taking its toll and maintenance is needed. Our room had mouldy tiles in the shower and cupboard doors needing repair. The complimentary body cream had been used. It just didn't feel like a 4 star room.

A lovely hotel in most respects, with very friendly and helpful staff. But some very odd choices in fitout and so on. In order of running into them
* No clothes drawers at all that we could find. The bedside tables are solid with only a small drawer, there are none in the wardrobe etc. We spent our time with our suitcases open on the floor
* A bizarrely complicated European microwave, apparently designed to serve as a conventional oven as well. It took us at least 15 minutes to work out how to heat up a cup of coffee, which is presumably the only thing most people will use it for
* Some kind of heating strip behind the mirror, which comes on automatically
* Loud and annoying muzak in the swimming pool/spa area, normally one of the few public areas in a hotel where you can get away from this.
Most of this would be hard to fix in a short time. But turning off muzak and replacing bedside tables would be a good start.
Again, these were minor annoyances. But taken collectively, they detracted from an otherwise pleasant stay

Went to the restaurant for my sisters birthday and the food was beautiful! We requested a birthday dessert and the presentation did not disappoint although the actual brownie itself was quite dry and was not made to order. Other than that it was great :)

Stay was a really good price (for 4 people) and included a buffet breakfast which was great. Bed was comfortable though If you like thinner pillows you will need to ask.. the defaults are rather large. Room was tidy with lovely views. Kids loved the pool.

The service is great, as usual. The food is lovely, as usual. The bed is so comfortable and the suite is fantastic. We have been here several times before and we will definitely be back. Thank you!

Just ok ... service not great - cheapish box room city view? Of the side of a building? Room service breakfast ordered for 8am didn't arrive re-called at 8.30am and still didn't arrive

Loved Rydges, a bit more than some others but great view from the 16th floor, well appointed room, comfy King bed,$250 including breakfast for two at the Portlander was money well spent. Now our Wellington Go To.

Convenient location in the city centre, very comfortable beds, immaculately clean rooms and facilities, nice bar and good breakfast service. Only downsides are the noisy heatpump in the room and the dismal view from the rooms at the back of the hotel.

Clean, tidy, comfortable and real nice up to date decor rooms and very friendly staff. Great location with everything in walking distance within the CBD. Would recommend to anyone if you are wanting and nice place to stay in Wellington.

We booked a month earlier asked to be on a high floor with a balcony we got a room with no balcony and it was the wheel chair access room so the fridge was on the floor and the bench was a waist weight. I bought 2 cakes on saturday morning and asked if they could put them in there fridge because our ftidge could not fit them and ill pick them up sunday at checkout. Sunday comes we check out i ask for cakes and they could only find 1 of the 2 cakes and all they say is we can give you the money for the 1 and reason of why the other cant be found. At the minimum they should of given us a free night or something more. Very poor service and most definitely wont be staying there again its just not up to scratch

I'm attending a week long training course at this hotel. It is a good place for a training course. The hotel is in a good location - being close to the railway station. The place is modern and pleasant. The catering has been good too.
The only negatives are that there is no affordable all day car parking at or near the hotel, and the standard coffee served to course participants is rubbish. You have to buy the "proper" espresso coffee.

Room was fine and bed was comfortable, however myself and my partner seemed to have new bites on our ankles every morning which was concerning. The breakfast was nice, but what put me off the most was the parking situation, we called in advance and we're told there was valet parking, but on arrival we were told we had to park in a lot around the block, the place was kinda dingey and I didn't feel comfortable leaving our van there, plus if we forgot something from the car we had to go around the block to get it. Same situation with the gym, it was advertised online that there is a fitness centre at the hotel however it is just one treadmill, one bike and a few dumbbells and if you want a full fitness centre they provide you with a pass from a gym in the city somewhere. It just seems like if you want what's advertised you actually have to leave the hotel to get it.

From the time we entered the hotel, the staff gave us a fantastic family experience. They were so accommodating in letting us not only check in early, but also allowing us to have a late check out, as well as letting us store our luggage at the hotel to collect after an event we were going to.
The food is exceptional and would highly recommend eating at the restaurant. Breakfast had a great variety of food and drink, and is one of the best buffet breakfasts that we've had.
Location is perfect as it's so close to everything and within walking distance.
Our family really enjoyed the use of the pool, spa and sauna especially in winter in windy wellington. Added bonus for the kids too was the use of the kids games room. They really enjoyed themselves even though the 'Wii' was not in action.
Room was great with all the amenities that you will need. We had a great harbour view and the only downside would be the size of the beds, felt too small...although I must say the beds were very comfortable.
Overall, we definitely had an absolutely positively amazing experience and will definitely be back.
Highly recommend this hotel!

Lovely place to stay and a great team working there.

I had to leave my bag at the Rydges after my husband was taken gravely ill in Auckland and I had to get up there quickly. After he rallied somewhat I phoned Rydges to find out how to get my bag. The young man on the phone (I think it was Adam), said that he would handle it completely and ring me back. He did this, had organised a courier and got it sent up without me having to do anything. I so appreciated the service he showed me and the compassionate way in which he dealt with my problem.

Not the most comfortable pillows. Housekeeping appalling. Went out all day to find room wasn't made up. Rang housekeeping and they just hung up. Rang reception they had no idea when housekeeping would come if ever. I would get better service at an ibis

Enjoyed our stay from beginning to end. Lovely staff, well equipped modern rooms and definitely the best cooked breakfast we have ever had at a hotel! :-) We recommend getting a room with either a city or harbour view if you are staying with children as ours spent a lot of time looking at the views out the windows and we think that was worth the extra money that these rooms are! :-)

We stayed here the night of the earthquake in Wellington. While our room itself was fine the building showed what appeared to be serious signs of damage due to the earthquake. Very large cracks in the wall and stairwell floors. One of the staff elevators free fell during the earthquake. The front desk staff were very dismissive of our concerns of the tsunami warnings and were clearly unprepared to deal with the situation beyond telling people everything will be alright.

Bad first impression. Came at 1 pm and the room wasn't ready, which is acceptable because of the early check-in, left my suitcase and backpack in reception and back 3 hours later, I have asked twice the guy in reception about my stuff and he tells they drop for us at the room (good stuff) when got the room no clue of my luggage, then I called they say everything is in reception and I have to go and get it. That's mean when I've asked twice for my luggage they didn't even check this out for me.
The first impression was: they don't care about customer service

The room was fine but the service was shambolic. I tried calling reception for 30 minutes with no answer to address a simple housekeeping issue. Someone came up to my room while I was in the shower, knocked, and the proceeded to come in anyway.

Have stayed another night here now. Housekeeping came into my room at 8:30am while I was in the bathroom.

I must admit that we expected far more from Rydges than we found.

The check-in took almost half an hour, whereby we had to bring our luggage ourselves into the entrance hall and also to the room. The check-in procedure only took five minutes, but unfortunately the queue reached to the entrance.

The trainees at the countdown did their best and were also very friendly and service-oriented, but two counters were just not enough.

The room was OK except for the view, the apparently defective and contaminated air conditioning and a partially neglected bathroom.

The wifi was quite strong - for this one star alone.

The breakfast would have been basically OK if we hadn't had some significant things that shouldn't have bothered us worldwide from a four-star category.

We greeted the first waitress we met at breakfast and asked where we could get a hot chocolate and a cappuccino. We were very brisk and in no way pointed out four stars like "but that costs extra and there was normal coffee over there".

And you may hardly think it possible, but in the four and a half star Rydges hot chocolate and cappuccino actually cost extra. If you get a hot drink from the coffee machine, you get simple filter coffee and hot water for free ...

The breakfast buffet is OK and the service mostly friendly. However, the employees at stations that were "empty", such as the cups, the bacon and the ham, only became active when they were addressed before there was a refill.

What we noticed particularly negatively was that when the offered champagne ham was out of stock, it was not newly carved from the existing piece - instead, ham that was already graying and with refrigerator coolness and aroma was refilled ... uh.

We did not visit the pool and spa area, which is why we cannot comment on the design, cleanliness and hygiene.

The Rydges is OK for one night if you book without breakfast and have breakfast elsewhere. Without a decent coffee - and it should be with you - the day doesn't start well ...
