Beautiful area and a great service on this narrow gauge railway. They have some lovely historic little engines. The staff are friendly and informative. They can also adapt a carriage for a wheelchair.

Excellent day out for adults and children alike, a great way to learn about the history of mining in the Lakeland fells and a trip on a narrow guage steam train if you want to Boot! Excellent cafeteria's at Ravenglass and Dalegarth stations and also a great way to explore the fells on foot without taking your car.

Fantastic small gauge heritage railway service. Been visiting the railway since I came here with my parents as a child, and I still really enjoy it. The smells, sounds and close up experiences you get with the steam locomotives is something to cherish. Well worth a day out, also the road through Hardknott to the station at Eskdale is an astonishing drive.

Great experiance, friendly staff. Genuine old steam trains used for moving mined ore from the hills at dalegarth down to the main station in ravenglass. Good for a family day out if staying in the local area.

My 3 year old loves steam trains and we all thoroughly enjoyed the journey. Dog friendly ask for anyone wanting to take did on the train. All day tickets are cheap and if my son had his way we would have been on and off it all day! Fantastic experience. Highly recommend, especially for anyone on holiday like us also the free access to the steam train museum at Ravenglass ststion is an added bonus!

Guaranteed a wonderful day out at Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway! We've been many times and never tire of the journey. Good cafes at both ends. Some lovely walks from Boot and you can take your bikes along if there's room for something extra.

The railway ride definitely induces nostalgia as you are chugged along by the steam train. One way journey from ravenglass to dalegarth is 40 mins. There is not much to do at the stations (about 5-6 of the them) enroute to dalegarth. A return journey is good enough to kill 2 hours including time for a light snack / meal at either ravenglass or dalegarth. There is kids play area at both the stations which will keep the little ones busy for longer if needed. The kids love it and we were blessed with a lovely summer day so it was quite enjoyable.

Loses one star as I found the ticket prices a little steep: return journey for adults is 15 pounds (kids go free so that was a bonus)

Pro trip: Although I didn't do it myself as I love riding the train and was not on a tight budget, but if you don't want to spend 15 pounds (per adult) on a return journey you can be more efficient by having one adult take the kids on the train one way from ravenglass to dalegarth. The adult not riding the train can drive from ravenglass to dalegarth and pick the kids up for you next adventure in Lake District.

Fabulous journey, the volunteers are very friendly. We felt completely safe and saw the extra cleaning they did to ensure the carriages were COVID free. Our 3 children loved it, would highly recommend.

Great little railway, recommend sitting in open carriage if weather OK to see most of countryside. Lucky enough to see a pair of buzzards out hunting, one seemed to follow train for a little while almost at eye level just feet away

Lovely narrow gauge railway that serves the Eskdal...

Lovely narrow gauge railway that serves the Eskdale Valley with multiple stops between Ravenglass and Boot. The railway itself is interesting and being able to travel on a steam train (if you select the correct journey, if not your motive force will be a diesel engine) is an experience not to be missed. Steam engines seem to be alive and breathing. Their smell and the heat and steam they produce are more than just mechanical by products. Even on a wet or cold day, travelling on a steam powered train is a good experience. The railway offers excellent views of the estuary and sandflats as you leave Ravenglass and then views of the river and fells that flank the line as you travel inland. Stops along the way offer opportunities to get off and walk the valley or fells or to visit the local pubs and sample local food and beers. Having spent a week based at Eskdale, the railway allowed us to walk the fells on both side of the valley and then return to our campsite by train. The train allowed us to complete one-way walks knowing we could relax (and recover!) on the train journey home. The railway is not cheap to use, but with careful planning, it does allow you to walk the valley and visit the Castle, Ravenglass, Boot and all points between without resorting to a car and that makes for a very enjoyable stay.

This is a lovely railway to "do". The narrow gauge railway takes one from the tidal lower reaches to the base of Scafell, an hour's journey through grazing river / wetland, forests and deep mountain valleys. One can sit outside if the weather is suitable. There's ice cream and beer on each end! Highly recommended. Buy a ticket at the station, or on the mainline...

Been on Ratty about 6 times total and still enjoy the ride. It's fun, with breathtaking scenery all the way. There are multiple stops to get on and off and the trains run regular. There is a cafe / gift shop at each end and at the Ravenglass end there is a fabulous museum which is free to go in. The train ride is quite cramped in the carriages but don't let this put you off. There are seats with padding on and I recommend finding a carriage with this as ones bottom can get uncomfortable after awhile. All in all great for kids and big kids 65+.

Great day out for all couples and families walk round the museum and then for a lovely ride up and down the valley behind a 15 inch guage steam locomotive sat in the open you can see the wildlife on the route and trace the history of the railway and the iron ore mines a walk into boot for a pint and a look at the mill and the old terminus walk on the old track and have something to eat in the railway cafe value for money in my opinion and there are offers on as well we got half price on Ullswater steamers to be taken anytime in the next 12months
