The railway ride definitely induces nostalgia as you are chugged along by the steam train. One way journey from ravenglass to dalegarth is 40 mins. There is not much to do at the stations (about 5-6 of the them) enroute to dalegarth. A return journey is good enough to kill 2 hours including time for a light snack / meal at either ravenglass or dalegarth. There is kids play area at both the stations which will keep the little ones busy for longer if needed. The kids love it and we were blessed with a lovely summer day so it was quite enjoyable.

Loses one star as I found the ticket prices a little steep: return journey for adults is 15 pounds (kids go free so that was a bonus)

Pro trip: Although I didn't do it myself as I love riding the train and was not on a tight budget, but if you don't want to spend 15 pounds (per adult) on a return journey you can be more efficient by having one adult take the kids on the train one way from ravenglass to dalegarth. The adult not riding the train can drive from ravenglass to dalegarth and pick the kids up for you next adventure in Lake District.
