Went for afternoon tea.The place itself is beautiful,but the food was a let down.The finger sandwiches were mediocre,the scones were dry so much that they crumbled when cut in two , the cake's looked nice,but I've had a lot better from an Iceland party mix.I had a lot better afternoon tea at Rockcliff Hall.

Well, I don t know how to rate this stay really, as we feel a little disappointed.

We have just arrived at the Ramside to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary and upon first impressions we were very pleased, the reception checkin was really informative and quick and the staff seemed friendly.

As this was a special occasion, we decided to go all out and book a more elaborate and more expensive room than we would normally and therefore booked and received confirmation of a suite that came with a balcony and garden views, however, when we arrived into the room we were minus the balcony.

We didn t worry at this point as we thought it was just a mistake and contacted the reception to notify them only to be told that the room had already been booked out!

I got nowhere with the duty manager (Patrick) who simply said there is nothing I can do. How poor to shatter someone s celebration and basically shrug your shoulders at them, shame on you Ramside, I m sure their would have been something you could have done.

In the words of the Duty Manager, just because you book something and get confirmation in email, doesn t mean you get it, really? If we book something and receive confirmation in writing, we don t then expect to have to contact the hotel for confirmation, which is exactly what Patrick said the other customers that had got the room did!

Very disappointing first impressions.

Visited here for an enjoyable afternoon tea served in lovely lounge near reception and overlooking the gardens. The afternoon tea was typical fare with various finger sandwiches and warm fruit scone with cream and jam and a variety of small cakes. The waiter who served us was friendly and attentive and nice to be offered 2nd pots of tea and coffee without asking.

I was disappointed with the service at Ramside Hall. I like to feel like I matter as a customer when I stay somewhere, here I felt like a number. The service at reception was far from welcoming.
The room was large and comfortable and had a lovely view, it was noisy though (and a bit dusty).
The spa was lovely.

A guaranteed good meal cooked by chefs specialising in steaks and meat-centric dishes...all served by friendly and attentive waiting staff with a detailed eye for customer service.
You'll find on the menu robust cuts of meat, paired with full and delicate flavours, on hot and well presented plates. It'll be more than you can comfortably manage! Love it!

Played the Cathedral course on a very windy day in late Sep. With the wind whipping about in an unpredictable fashion, I was actually worried that I didn't have enough balls ! Generally a very open course design with intelligent use of both hazards and bunkers, distance control was absolutely critical . The course also looked visually intimidating from tee boxes if you were playing it "blind" for the first time. If I had to replay it again , I'd use completely different aim points and club selection second time around. Let it be said that I pulled out every club in the bag ! Memorable was the dog left long par 5 7th at well over 600 yds. From the tee box, the landing area looked no larger than a postage stamp with trouble left (trees ) and right ( Steep slope with knee high grass ) . It was playing into a stiff wind too. Finished the round feeling like I'd done battle with a mighty beast, but that really just added to the enjoyment at the end.

Typical Christmas party night. Pack as many as you can into a room...we needed to ask for an extra table as the table was set for 18 but could only get 16 seated. They said they had no more tables until we protested. The food was OK.....not rubbish but not brilliant though the potatoes and chocolate tart was good. We were seated in a location where we had to move every time someone needed the bar, toilet etc. They are also the only place we have been that will not give you a VAT receipt until after the event as they have not ' sold' the event until you have been. You do, however, have to leave all the money for the event weeks before. You can't ' buy' the event the same day they ' sell' it to you!!

Whilst the facilities, rooms & dining choices are very good the Hotel lets itself down with very badly with poor communications and lack of full explanation of what the various package deals include, or don't in a number of occasions. An example being selling a package that only includes partial access to all areas, even when the areas are under subscribed. The Hotel needs to ensure paying customers know exactly what to expect for the money they are paying. Could not honestly recommend to others due to this.

A fantastic afternoon of food and entertainment. The Four Seasons group were fantastic. The table service was fast and well coordinated. I have to give the coat room attendant a special mention as he was so helpful and polite, we were treated like royalty by him. Well done Ramside.

Went to spa reception to purchase gift voucher, long wait yet again to be seen, only one receptionist on duty dealing with phone, bookings and vouchers, ridiculous. Other customers behind me in queue told to go to special gift voucher desk which was not manned when I arrived but was later after eventually receptionist called for assistance, too late for me. However these customers were then redirected back to reception as staff member was busy!

Come on Ramside, please get your spa reception better organised. This is not the first time I've experienced this, it happens every time I've been either to buy vouchers/products or as a spa guest myself. I don't think spa guests want to be hanging around in robes waiting to check-in for treatments alongside contractors reporting in to do maintenance or members of public trying to buy products, gym members booking in etc. Why not move spa guest check in and bookings upstairs (where the treatment rooms are) and where there is a dedicated reception. The open plan ground floor reception gives no privacy when making transactions, giving email addresses etc. It's a shame that a fabulous spa as the Ramside is has these niggles but I'm sure they can be improved.

Ramside is a beautiful hotel with an excellent spa. The room wasn't clean compared to other 4 star hotels, which is a shame. However, the grounds are well kept. Staff are welcoming, polite and the experience was overall satisfactory.

Would I stay here again? Unlikely - The cleanliness of the room has put me off staying here again.

Would I use the spa facilities again? Yes

Spa
The best in Durham. I loved every minute being there. The relaxation pool was superb.

Bed (Premier room)
Huge. Two single beds put together with a giant duvet. Mattress was comfortable.

En-suite
Nice deep bath and double shower. Well designed and modern.

Cons
~~~~
Noise
Walls are thin. Woken up at 6am to somone in the room next door aggressively going to the toilet. Not very pleasant.
Dust
The room was dusty, especially around tables. Put my phone on charge and noticed the plug sockets covered in dust. Bathroom walls also had dust between the tiling and on the tiles themselves.
Pillows
Not comfortable. You'd think a 4 star hotel would invest in some decent Pillows. Woke up with a sore neck.
A really beautiful and luxury experience, rooms are modern and very tastefully decorated. Onsite restaurants offer great food and choice. Spa experience is exceptional. Highly recommend. Had a complimentary upgrade. The team at Ramside are always happy to help.
