First I waited 4 hours in the ER and still had not even been seen by a doctor. I left, appalled by the actions of the staff. This is what happened. First of all, they were impatient and rude to most everyone who came through the door. But the worst was an elderly gentleman came in, in chronic pain after being released earlier from the hospital earlier in the day. It was clear he has some form of terminal illness by the look of him. His poor wife has to rely on help from another patient to help her clean him up after an accident with his colostomy bag broke open. Then after 3 hours of sitting in a wheelchair waiting to be seen, he began to moan in pain, wanting to lie down. The EMT doing triage got frustrated with him, saying that "back pain wasn't what they were seeing him for." And after begrudgingly checking his vitals, she let his poor wife to deal with him, trying to make him comfortable. He continues to moan for several more minutes. Saying, "oh my God, oh my God it hurts" while his wife say by crying because she couldn't help him. Then suddenly he froze, and became non-responsive. His wife started screaming his name trying to wake him up, and the EMT, nurse, and nearby security did nothing. It took one of the other patients to start yelling for their help before they walked over to him. Several of us said that he should go in ahead of us all and at least be let to lie down somewhere while he waited, but the staff got frustrated with us and got in our faces. Granted, I don't want to be told how to do my job either, but it shouldn't have taken an entire room of people-in an ER- no less to make sure someone gets the care they need. I got up and left then, fearing the kind of care I would receive myself if the staff couldn't even help an old, sick man, in a timely manner.
