Nice homestyle restaurant. The gyro was good but a bit stingy as far as portion size.
Nice homestyle restaurant. The gyro was good but a bit stingy as far as portion size.
Terrible service. And they told me they had no more pierogis but they served them to the table next to me who got there after us. Also they didn't tell me they didn't gave my food until they brought my friends foods which pissed me off. Cuz by the time my food came everyone was done eating. Food took long and the waiter never checked up on us. We had to flag somebody down for more water. They were non-apologetic about their mistakes
They need to get it together
Pretty god spot. It s open 24hours so that s a big plus!
I love the place. My husband and I have been going to this place since we were teenagers. My family loves it.
Good food and nice people. Just wish the cook would give me what is written on the order paper..
The people who lived in the neighborhood seemed happy, but we were not. First we told the waiter of my allergy to milk (breakout in hives and swell up). We asked if the pierogies had any milk in them. He responded in perfect English that they had beef, so they couldn't have milk. We didn't understand, so we tried to clarify asking about the potato pierogies, and he responded with a similar answer, they can't have milk, because they have beef. We repeated ourselves, trying to clarify about smashed potatoes inside dough, wanting to make sure. Finally, we just ordered the potato pierogies, we expected to be an appetizer. He started to walk away before we ordered. We called him back. My better half ordered fish and chips, and he walked away again, before he could take my order. This was welcomed when the food arrived. The pierogies were worse than any I've bought frozen. The fish smelled very off, and the fried batter was soggy and chewy. The best part was the frozen, reheated fries, which says a lot about the meal. We left, and left the fish. We choked down the pierogies because we were very hungry. After paying our bill we went in search of edible food.
This place is an institution. neighborhood classic. Never left here unhappy. Great value for the dollar. Solid American fare. Nice people. What Alphabet City is all about. Hit it for breakfast. Go to work late. Start your day right
This restaurant has been in the neighborhood for as long as I can remember. It used to serve primarily Ukrainian food, which is what I tried. My two cousins both ordered chicken. I was extremely disappointed. Pierogies must have been Mrs. T's. Sauerkraut was not fresh. Kielbasa was the only thing that was ok. Didn't even give you a piece of rye bread like most Slavic restaurants. When ordering, one cousin told me not to have the stuffed cabbage because it's terrible, so I didn't. My cousins were ok with the chicken cutlet dinner. They should have changed the name of the restaurant when they changed ownership years ago. Located on a busy densely populated city street. Many other restaurants in the area to try instead.
For a Greek owned diner, they sure know how to whip up a good Polish dish. They know the secret to keeping a successful diner you bought out is to master the dishes that made it successful in the first place. These guys are amazing at what they do. The portions are generous and the staff are beyond friendly. This diner is a staple of the East Village eateries.
I went there for breakfast. For 10 bucks I had a massive order of pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon, everything very tasty. Most of the clients are locals, which is always a good sign.
Excellent diner food. Bit on the expensive side, but ultimately worth it. All about those cheese blintzes
Simple, straightforward, open 24/7--best diner in the East Village
Each experience is great, when you come in at 4AM drunk or having a bad day and you just need food at 10PM. They are always there. Delivery s are quick and clean
My family has been going here for the last 50 years at least. Started at the old location. Love them
The staff is kind, the prices are nice (for NYC standards), the food is good and the place is clean and welcoming.
This place serves your typical diner food and is a great affordable place in the neighborhood.
The food was slightly overpriced but tasty, but the other patrons for dinner theater! This used to be a well-known place that was hopping at all hours, now you're lucky if you see four people in the restaurant which makes me think that the food might not be that fresh because there's not that much turn over. It's becoming just like any other overpriced New York City Diner. So sad.
I had to send my food back because it was overdone. Plus we waited 25 mins for our order before I sent it back. Go to another diner in.that neighborhood
Food is aight but take forever to bring it to the table
I love Oodessa. Hot borscht and a potato pancake make for the perfect lunch on a cold winter's day.
As if this place is cool. I wonder who they have tied up in the basement.
After a night at the club it was the perfect spot for classic old-school french toast, eggs over easy with bacon on the side. I asked for coffee and got an unforgettable experience.
Huge quantity of food in each serving, even if it doesn't feel like it's the healthiest. Wait staff were extremely friendly, it felt like everybody in the restaurant was family. Inexpensive, good for a low-key, no-frills experience.
Fast service!! Traditional mom and pops diner ! Grandma on one end and teens on the other ! Good food , great price . 4 stars because of Gordon Ramsey LOL.
Very nice Diner, friendly customer service and appropriate pricing!
I love this place so much! I used to go here a lot with my dad and my little sister when we lived down the block from there. Such sweet servers. :) Everybody is so nice and I also remember going here with lots of my family. I haven t gone in a while but I plan to soon!
Heheheh my hubby took me here first thing when I arrived in America. I was so sleep deprived and jetlagged I was utterly out of it. They were very friendly, and when I accidentally ordered something I hated at first sight; they were nice about it and fixed it to something less dangerous. Can't have folks fresh off the boat barf all over the floor :-). At least that's how I remember my first meal in the new country. Legendary, highly recommended.
When I went to NY to spend Thanksgiving with my brother, Odessa was a godsend. Neither of us is a cook, so it was nice to have an option that felt like a real Thanksgiving dinner without breaking the bank. The other time I went there was also a positive experience.
If you want some porgies and borsch this is not a bad place to go. The decor is old and the interior is dark. Service tends to be good because the restaurant tends to be quiet. It is more affordable compared to Vanessa's and the quiet non-hectic surroundings make this a more enjoyable experience. You may find yourself the only one in the restaurant, but the drink specials make it an affordable weekday dinner spot.
Been going here for 9yrs for breakfast . The staff are nice especially the waiter Willie. My family and i love Willie. Everybody loves Willie
Ordered the steak and spinach, it was tasteless and over cooked. Definitely not worth the $22 I paid. Best tasting item was my can of coke.
Wonderful old school New York diner. Great prices and awesome staff. If you are ever alone for Thanksgiving, they can be your family that day.
$15 brunch includes coffee and beverage of your choice. Used to be $11. No thrills, just solid food and service. Get the egg salad triple decker.
Always a great spot! Pirogies are like pillows of amazingness
Worst place ever!!! I ordered a cheese burger, they gave me no lettuce and no tomatoes and it was extremely dry! I called them to tell them how my order was sent and the guy told me he doesn't care! Rude and disgusting will never order here again!
I liked it. The atmosphere is old school - an elderly patron in here reading her book while munching on perogis. Food decent and costs reasonable. Would recommend.
Nice restaurant. Great lasagna!!! Been coming here with my boyfriend for a couple of yrs. Waiters and waitresses are friendly. A +
I just had to update my review from 5 stars. Use to get fast delivery and good food, but the last few times delivery took over an hour and the food was just terrible. I really hope you guys turn things around as you are one of the last diners in my neighborhood.
My neighborhood diner for over 40 years. It disappoints more and more each time I go back.
Really good food and I love that they have skylights in the back of the restaurant. Such a throwback to restaurants years ago. You don't see that very much anymore in New York City. Quality food is really good. My girlfriend and I both enjoyed it very much. We'll definitely be going back. They can handle larger crowds like 10 people in the back of the restaurant.
Next time I'll be back with my friends. It has a nice atmosphere. Feeling here is like a restaurant in Fort Worth I liked.
I love this restaurant. I always get the "Odessa Combination Dinner" even if it's for lunch - you'll always have leftovers! It's 4 pirogies, 1 stuffed cabbage, 1 Kielbasa with sauerkraut + 1 potato pancake (and comes with sour cream + apple sauce, of course). You can get the pirogies and Kielbasa fried or boiled. Don't let the meal's appearance deter you - this is the most delicious and filling meal you'll have in a while. If you have a picky kid, just get them a side order of pirogies and tell them they're dumplings.
Old fashioned diner, good food but crawling with hipsters.
An absolute delight! Here is a short bit of literature to express my affection:
Greasy pancakes, up all night
Always a comfort when you've had a fright.
Omelettes, waffles, and sweet ice cream
This kitchen is a thing of dreams
And now, a trip, to old Ukraine!
Nostalgia and joy all in my brain
Fried pierogies stuffed with cheese
A side of kielbasa? A whole one please!
All in all, a true delight
Makes you heart feel just right.
Terrific job! I can't help but feel forever indebted to your culinary service to the East Village and New York City at large.
Food it's ok could be better
Price to high for what the food worth.
The service was very welcoming and observant. It has a nice atmosphere.
Your typical old school neighborhood diner. Lots of menu choices!
Somebody told me the pierogis are amazing! So why isn't it 5 star????
The menu and service were ahead of our expectations. I absolutely enjoyed the ambience of this spot. Superb place to take the family out for dinner.
The Food was absolute trash.waffles were Burt and the burger only came with two bun and one patty in the middle nothing else it was not worth the price I didn t enjoying any of it I regret buying from this place
Good service clean, had breakfast there food was good
It doesn't live up to it's past reputation of a place serving old world food. It's just another local diner.
My best friend and I come here frequently and have been for the past 6 years. It's our go to. The service and for are consistently great. We love it here
Friendly service, tasty home cooked meals, reasonable prices. Would recommend.
Great service, great food, and i'm definitely coming back here
Is a old school diner breakfast and dinner quick and fast!
Excellent breakfast. Always have good grub here. East side's must do!
Amazing food for such a great price. Friendly staff make you feel like family, especially with the home cooked food. My favorite spot in the East Village by far.
Been going here since I was 19, always go to my favorite waiter he's awesome classy and always on point he's been there so long and just love Mr Willie, food is always good
The service the waiters is bad the food is bad as well I would never go back there or recommend this place to anyone
Great food at a reasonable price, good mood. Let's say the toilet is under criticized.
Late night. Hungry. They have the solution. If you're picky, I don't know what to tell you.
Horrible breakfast, what happened. Did the owners change.
Because it is always there for us. It's a local diner!
Oessa is a regular old school East Side diner. They serve Eastern European fair such as blintzes and pierogies, borscht and more. They also serve American food like hamburgers with pickles and french fries. It is very similar to the Greek diners in Queens, there is a very thick menu and you can probably find whatever it is that you want. They have coffee and fountain soda and tea and alcohol. They have a decent amount of seating, you probably won t wait for a table. Where across the street from Tompkins Square Park which has a rich cultural history.
