I went without much expectation for a weekend getaway near Bengaluru. Place is very serene. I met a gentleman named Abhiskek who explained me about farm activities and water management projects to conserve nature. You can sit and watch classical dance practices who performs with dedication and passion. Best time to visit there is Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm . Call them once before visiting there !

I am unable to rate it because I went there on 13.1.18 with family but police blocked the way before 1kms and didn't allow us to go. We asked them reason to block the road they asked that illegal activities are going ahead so they blocked the road. Time wasted. Before going I called Nrityagram but nobody picked the phone.

Very rude behaviour. Definitely not worth visiting. The drive is good but the place is closed with lock and the lady who comes and talks is very arrogant. Wonder why she is so rude to everyone. Please consider other places for better weekend. This place simply ruins your mood because of the host .

Definitely*not* recommended to visit this place

The drive to Nrityagram is lined with trees with the occasional bumping of cattle.
You can see the dancers practicing and explore the rock structures around. It is a well-planned village with a Temple Of Dedication . The temple has an image of Protima Bedi s guru in a dance pose.

Fashioned from the raw mud of Nrityagram and fired after it was built, the temple is dedicated to space. It is decorated with panels depicting the elements, dance motifs, mudras and designs from costumes and ghungroos.

Inside is a granite rock scooped out to hold water and a flame that stays lit.

Tips:

1. The entry fee is Rs 50

2. Visiting hours are between 10am and 2pm from Tuesdays to Sundays

3. You are not allowed to take photographs of the residential complex

4. Taking photos inside the dance class is strictly prohibited as well

5. The village is remote and locating it may be a problem. It is advised to save the location on Google Maps beforehand.

Tucked away from the city in Hesaraghatta is this beautiful dance village called Nrityagram. Known for it's famous dance school, it's a very serene place consisting of beautiful earth architecture elements. The typical mud houses, stone arches and mud sculptures, it's such a beautiful place to see and be in. The only thing to remember is not to click pictures here and also to maintain the decorum of the place. The dance school atmosphere is very peaceful and I feel every other visitor should do justice to that. Interested people could enrol for their dance classes.

P.S this sculpture picture can be clicked.

It's a beautiful place. Definitely worth the visit for when you're living in Bangalore. Or even otherwise if you have an interest in classical dance. Currently, they only have Odissi training here under Guru Surupa Sen, who's also been one of the founders of Nrityagram under Protima Bedi. Visitors can sit and observe the rehearsals of these artists during 10.00 to 14.00 hours from Tuesday to Sunday. Of course you're not allowed to photograph or disturb the artists.
They also have workshops for other classical dance forms on a demand basis. They perform on a national and international level at various events. It's a great initiative and gives the true gurukul feel that is almost lost in modern times.

Nrityagram is India's first modern Gurukul (residential school) for Indian classical dances and an intentional community in the form of a dance village. .Nrityagram situated 175km from Mysuru and 36km from Bengaluru, is a community of dancers in a forsaken place amidst nature. The moment you enter and step into Nrityagram, you know its going to be something of its own kind. A place where you breathe, eat, sleep, dream, talk, imagine and dance. Nrityagram offers people a unique opportunity to view classes / rehearsals - a facility available nowhere else in the world.Far from city's hustle and bustle, this place offer you peace of mind and satisfies your love for classical dance. Lot of greenery, beautiful wall arts. The dance school is so blended with nature, it visualizes the ashram atmosphere that stretch our imagination while reading mythologies.Overall a great experience

Me and a group of friends (classical dancers) had been to Nrityagram this Sunday. We were so excited to visit the place. But unfortunately we couldn't enjoy the place due to the behaviour and response of the staff. The receptionist was very rude to us. The person who gave us an introduction about the place was also not as welcoming as we expected. She threatened us that she would call the police when we were clicking pictures of ourselves. The place is very nice but no use of us going to such place where we don't get proper response. We really felt that we wasted a whole day, instead we could have visited some other place. I am very honest about this review. I hope that the staff don't respond so bad for other visitors in the future.

Nrityagram was a place I was very eager to visit, being a dancer. Unfortunately, my experience was negative and seemed a bad way to end the weekend. Having gone there with my group of dancer friends, our excitement fell flat at the rudeness of the host/ registration desk. The short description of the place was rather unfriendly and mostly only a publicizing of classes; I had hoped for a bit about the place or art form.

Additionally, we were looking forward to watching the senior dance lesson, which was told would begin at 10:30 AM. We kept waiting in the hall and nobody turned up. When asked, the same all-knowing registration desk responded very indifferently that they didn't know.

The serenity of the place and soothing ambience sadly did not make up for the welcome we received.

Worst of all. 7 of us with two babies had been on 31st Dec for new year short trip as we could not plan far away ones with babies. This turned out to be the worst plan ever. They were closed without updating any such news in their website. I had checked their website prior and there was no such info. There were many other people who had come from long distances. When we asked them you should have updated about shut down in your website they failed to show least respect to us. They were rude, arrogant and what not. We had been their with babies and requested to just use wash room for that the lady their yelled at us saying there are no wash rooms here. Such pathetic staff they have. I strongly recommend not to visit this overrated worst place.

Nrityagram is a beautiful place. On a Sunday, it's the perfect place to escape from the hustle bustle of the city considering it isn't like other places outside Bangalore which are filled with city dwellers who carry the noise of the city along with them.
The place is open from 10am to 2pm. It's serene, picturesque and greenery around will soothe any soul that is exhausted during the week. The entry fee is 50 per person and one can stay in the premises until 2 and relax.

I think it was the most authentic, planned and beautiful places I have seen around Bangalore. The location itself is awesome. Also structure built for the dance training and residential quaters were very amazing. All natural and well maintained it's a gurukul in all it's senses. Do make sure you call the school before visiting. They have dance classes timing as well which allow visitors to view the students perform. There is a very nominal entry fee ( 50) which also covers information about the place.

One star because of the maintenance.. 4 stars deducted because of the inhospitality. They charge Rs.50 for adults. We cannot speak normally. We need to whisper. I respect their art and culture. But creating an inhospital environment is just not worth any penny.

About Nrityagram

Nrityagram: India's First Modern Gurukul

Nrityagram is a unique community located in the outskirts of Bangalore, India. It is a place where dance is not just an art form but a way of life. Founded in 1990 by the renowned Odissi dancer Protima Gauri, Nrityagram has become one of the most sought-after dance institutions in India.

The word "Nrityagram" means "dance village" in Sanskrit. The community was established with the aim of preserving and promoting classical Indian dance forms such as Odissi, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Over the years, Nrityagram has evolved into much more than just a dance school; it has become a cultural hub that celebrates Indian arts and traditions.

At Nrityagram, students are trained not only in dance but also in music, yoga and other aspects of Indian culture. The institution follows the traditional Gurukul system where students live with their gurus (teachers) and learn through observation and practice. This system ensures that students receive personalized attention from their gurus and develop a deep understanding of their art form.

One of the unique features of Nrityagram is its emphasis on collaboration between dancers from different disciplines. The institution hosts regular workshops where dancers from different parts of India come together to exchange ideas and techniques. This cross-pollination has resulted in some truly innovative performances that have won critical acclaim both within India and abroad.

Apart from training dancers, Nrityagram also hosts regular performances for audiences both within India and abroad. The institution's annual festival "Vasantahabba" attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to witness some truly breathtaking performances by some of India's finest dancers.

In addition to its focus on classical Indian dance forms, Nrityagram also promotes contemporary dance styles through its resident choreographer Surupa Sen who blends traditional elements with modern sensibilities to create something truly unique.

Nrityagram's commitment to excellence has earned it numerous accolades over the years including awards from UNESCO for its contribution towards preserving intangible cultural heritage.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, Nritygram is much more than just a dance school; it is an institution that celebrates Indian arts and traditions while promoting innovation through collaboration between artists from different disciplines. Its commitment to excellence has made it one of the most sought-after institutions for classical Indian dances while its focus on contemporary styles ensures that it remains relevant even today.
If you are looking for an authentic experience that celebrates Indian culture at its best then look no further than Nrtygram -India’s first modern Gurukul!
