20 years ago while training at mcrd san diego I was seen here when it was still called "balboa hospital". I had a injured leg. The military doctor merely looked at it and declared it cellulitis. After 2 months of training on it I made my way back home and promptly went to the ER in my home state. The first thing the civilian doctor ordered was xrays after looking at my leg. The result was that my Fibula (The smaller of the two leg bones located below the knee cap.) was broken. I was put in a cast and thankfully healed up without additional surgery after the beating it took at the mcrd much to the surprise of the civilian doctors.

It was my first visit at the naval medical center on Friday the 15 of 2017. I went to the ER for severe abdominal pain while pregnant. My visit started at 7pm and was out of there at 2am. My first experience at the naval medical center has been traumatizing. First, I got blood drawn and was left with a botched IV and while it taped on it was pressing into my muscle so much so that I forgot about my abdominal pain. I told the corpsman that the pain was 10 and wanted to get taken out. She never came back. I asked my husband to get someone to get the IV out before he pulled it out. The doctor was able to come in and remove it. The doctor ordered an ultra sound in radiology. He did estimate about an hour, which was ok. We waited two hours for the tech to give us the order to come up and get the ultra sound. A corpsman was able to take us to the radiology and as he knocked on the door she had just woken up. While getting the ultrasound she was yawning and her eyes were very low. I went back down to the ER and waited for another hour and a half for the results. At this time, I asked to be discharged because I was already there for 6 hours and mentally tired and feeling well. After the 7 hours total a new doctor, I didn't know the old doctor left, came in and explained my results which came back normal and couldn't tell me what was wrong. This has honestly been the worst experience I've ever had and I will never go back to the emergency room at NMCSD.

Was stationed at NRMC SD back in the 70's. She was called the Pink Palace then. Sure changed a lot. Earnest professional healers tending to our nations warriors, remains the same. Met my wife when she visited her ill father, there. Been together 37, so, Balboa -- they still call her that now -- was/is a magical place. (Or is that: 'magical palace'?)

The General Surgery & Infectious Disease Control Clinic are an Outstanding Staff & Service. I saw two Medical Doctors & I am very satisfied with my dr.'s appt.'s & Visits. I am well taken care of by the MRI, Cat scan & Ultrasound Depts. I had two Doctors who were genuinely compassionate about my health concerns. They are General Surgeon Dr. Kyle Gadbois & Dr. Larson a Infectious disease Specialist. Don't know why People complain & are negative about their Doctors or the medical facility they go to, but I'm satisfied with mine.

They treated my mother, who is a dependent of a retired Navy veteran, with great care when she went to the Emergency Room. She was treated and discharged the same afternoon. The staff were courteous and professional to patients and visitors.

I m specifically writing a review for Operation PINC. This is a walk-in contraceptive clinic in the OBGYN building. I was nervous about the whole experience going in, especially how long I was going to have to wait. I was in and out within an hour and that includes taking a pee test, getting a consult with the doctor and getting one IUD out and a new IUD in. Amazing!! I have never been more thankful for Tricare than now. Customer service was good if not great and I felt that my expectations were exceeded. Parking was the usual - the visitor parking lot is always on the full side but I can always find a spot within a few minutes. I highly recommend taking advantage of this clinic if you are active duty and/or a dependent!

Service members not given proper treatment in ER. No Tests done. Asked 2 questions and given 3 meds. This mom is not happy at all. They need tests to determine the exact problem. Not meds that are addictive without proper diagnostic testing. Shameful our servive members dont get better care!!!!

I drove 117 miles to be treated like garbage(rude, condescending)by the ER triage nurse. First I thought it was compassion fatigue but he was really nice to the next patient. He asked me how long I've been having hemoptysis and he didn't like my answer so he asked me what made me visit the ER at345 am. This is the worst I've ever been treated. Next time I'll visit a civilian ER. As a retired Marine it's very disappointing but that's today's system. I rather die than return to Balboa Naval Medical Center.

Back in September of '96. I gave birth to my beautiful handsome son. I thank God for having a healthy son n I like too also thank those wonderful doctors n nurses that were there by my sight during those times of my complicated n hard labor giving birth to my son Matthew F. He was 7lbs 13 oz n 21 1/2 in long. Born @ 7:44pm. He wouldn't have been here today if it wasn't for those wonderful Dr's n staff's. My son is now 21 yrs of age.

Just got discharged after arguing while hopped up in pain meds for treatment and being refused it. Have an 8 mm kidney stone that's trying to pass but physically can't that's size of a corn colonel by the way. My urologist wh I've seen said I couldn't pass it and if I started to go to the er to take care of told the Dr this and was laughed at was given attitude and was told to ride it out. The Dr's name is Benjamin walrath and he will be hearing from my command and a lawyer. I don't put up with malpractice

Just a heads up for people getting their meds from the pharmacy, its takes 25mins to check in then 35mins for them to find it. Rude front desk, but you see them chit-chatting behind, civillian and enlisted.

This is my hospital where I was born on April 16, 1966. My parents stated that they and I was treated with excellent care. So, proud to know that this beautiful Naval Hospital is where I was born.

NMCSD has a system. Let me clue you in. First, *the ER is exactly like ANY ER at any other hospital in San Diego!* Try going to Kaiser, Mercy, or Scripps. 7-8 hour wait as well. Why? It's FREE! No co-pay. All the complainers about wait times? I too have tried the ER route, sometimes it's 3-4 hours. Sometimes I have walked out and toughed it out until the next day. That is why the wait is so long at NMCSD. If you're going for: flu, fever, sore throat, or other non-emergency issues, that is how they will log it. And you are GOING TO WAIT. Sorry! You are best to: schedule an appointment ASAP on the appointment line, instead of strolling in and expecting to seen in an hour. Second clue: PARKING. If you think you're going to roll up and grab a spot close, forget it. PLAN AHEAD to park. We have gotten nothing but great treatment, LIFE SAVING treatment to be exact and it kicks the heck out of any civilian hospital by a mile. The Pregnant woman poster below complaining about walking too far first of all, walking is good for you, and that's the DEAL with NMCSD you walk, A LOT - they GIVE you a stork parking pass in in you last 4-6 weeks - that's it sunshine. Other hospitals in San Diego, they give you NOTHING, so be grateful! The other 1 star poster, Genoveva Flores, You were seen by TWO M.D.s, had your tests done, tests read, and it came back negative, nothing wrong, you said it yourself. Not too shabby considering Kaiser or the others would have to contact your insurance for testing AND well, there's that Co-Pay you'd have if you were not blessed with practically FREE FIVE STAR treatment. By all means, the one stars, go outside to other hospitals, I did. In my frustration, I went outside of network. Only to be folded RIGHT BACK IN because it was WORSE at a place like Alvarado. NO appointments, never saw the same doctor twice, and the wait rooms were dirty, over crowded, and looked like a third world country where English is the second language. At least at NMCSD, THEY SPEAK ENGLISH!

This is the worst hospital I have ever seen. The doctors are more accusatory then they are helpful, unless you are a civilian. I am not sure if the other reviews were written by actual patients but I disagree 100%. Congressman should visit this hospital and see how military personnel are treated by Navy Doctors. These doctors are more concerned with protecting the Navy from paying out disability to service members. This is why a large number of military personnel go to civilian doctors and pay out of pocket.

Awesome hospital for my fiance's spinal surgery. Everyone was helpful, willing to help and made sure I was clear with what will happen during the surgery, what happened and reconfirm everything stated previously at the end of the day. Made our experience less stressful. Thank you to everyone

Naval Hospital is the finest hospital we have ever had the pleasure of being a patient at. This hospital and it's staff have seen many family and I through three live births, countless inoculations plus broken bones mental issues and major surgerys. The staff is fantastic and the hospital is spotless. I am very fortunate to live in San Diego and have access to this hospital.

When my cousin has to do her own leg work to get her chemo and then have to wait over 4 hours to receive her chemo for ovarian cancer, I would say this place needs to re-evaluate their staff. Heather is NOT a nice person and needs to be fired! Have some compassion and make sure cancer patients are treated with the up most care!

Tried calling three days in a row. 40minute hold times to schedule appointment. Very difficult to do while at work. After the wait over the phone, I learn not yet assigned doctor, message will be sent to provider. They have 72hours to reply. When they do call they leave a voicemail and there are no direct call back numbers to their office. Have to start over again with appointment line to message to waiting for a call. System needs to be reevaluated.

Went to the ER because I was having spotting and was almost 20 weeks pregnant. I am a new mom and I don't know what is normal or not. I waited almost an hour for them to call me back to get my vitals. Everyone that checked in after me got back before I did. I understand that they go by severity but waiting an hour to get vitals is ridiculous. Then I had to wait another 15 minutes so the nurse could check my baby's heart rate. Apparently they only have 1 Doppler in the whole er. I waited 7 hours in the waiting room just to be told I have a UTI and I also needed to be given the Rhogam shot! I was furious! 7 hours is to long for anyone to be waiting in a ER!

To much to type But ER is hit or miss in docs being respectful or kind to patients literally had one walk in and say I can not help you because he didn't know what to do with me. Right side ab pain nasea vomiting and more. Then there is Breast health Clinic who claims they are "use to old ladies who bring them cookies" and get offended when they offend you and you call them on it. To the point of a doc actually lying to the commander of hospital a situation yet to be resolved. I will never go back to this hospital and will work with our State Reps to find solutions for why this hospital has declined in patient care so badly. I was sent here early from Japan because of my Breast Health condition and now I am being treated by a doc out in town. Why? Oh because according to commanders letter and my not being happy with a nurse ! they are not equipt to handle my care. He never contacted me he only listened to the bias doc and her nurse. I truly feel this is because she is on board of hospital well that doesn't mean she or any of them should be allowed to bully or lie and I nor any other patient should have to fight for our care we should have caring docs that want to see us and not act as if we are ruining their day by being there. As I stated about the nurse if "if they don't want the civilian jobs I'm positive many others would take them" and as for the military members it's not always going to be "old ladies bringing cookies" people are going to disagree or not be happy you need to be professional, patients are not there to be your best friends. Yes we will be nice or cordial but because one doesn't want to speak to a nurse because she is unhappy with her doesn't mean throw a fit. Not everyone is going to be happy for me Balboa is awful I will never let them touch me again !!

Only place I could find a doctor available. So far, my doctor has been great (Dr. Amir) but getting ahold of the staff at this location is brutal. I call and the 10 minute mark is up and leave a voicemail. I normally don't even get a call back. I have to contact them online via their new patient form in order to recieve a call back. It's ridiculous. Switching Doctors just for this reason.

I was vacationing in San Diego and started to hemmorhage from a recent hysterectomy after some sutures came undone. The staff was amazing and my husband and I counted about 24 staff members (doctors and nurses) who attended to me and realized the issue was severe. This was a significant departure from the care (or lack thereof) we are accustomed to in Las Vegas. I was in and out (with anesthesia & surgery) within 6 hours. There were approximately 4 anesthesiologists who listened to my concerns since I have had severe reactions in the past. I was awake immediately and not groggy or nauseous and able to go back to the Navy Lodge to sleep in a regular bed. My bleeding has subsided and they released me with comprehensive instructions. Couldn't be more pleased about the quality of care at this facility.

Went to get birth control, it was walk in so I fully expected to wait. The clinic wasn't full by any means but I was waiting for 2 hours, and they were calling other women who were walkins for the same thing before me. After my procedure I was in a lot of pain. They gave me 1 800 ml ibuprofen and sent me home. I had my birth control removed very soon after. Driving from El Cajon this was an ordeal.

While some of the staff were good, majority of them are just terrible. They need to realize they're really ruining the hospital's reputation. If you choose to work at a hospital, please understand that you'll be HELPING sick people. If you're only going to work for the pay, but no passion for this type of work.....resign and go elsewhere. It's so sad to see lack of compassion from hospital staff

Can t say that I was pleased about my whole experience here, I feel like there was a lot of things that annoyed me and were distasteful about this hospital. However if my fractured ankle turns out fine then I thank them for doing a good job with that and a big s/o to Sasha Fabian, great corpsman, made my stay there so much better and I completely loved and enjoyed her energy while I was high from the effects of anesthesia. Thank you

Terrible. The people behind the ER front desk are extremely rude. They forgot about me and left me in the back after my examination. The dentist here said he can't help with my pain since he's not familiar with where stuff is kept. What a joke. "Go home and take a pain killer" is my treatment.

TERRIBLE! went to nex pharmacy to pick up called in refill. signs directed me to kiosk to take ticket. selected pick up called in refill. ticket directed me to have a seat and wait. display for orders ready for pick up showed approx 30min wait. after a frustrating 1 1/2 wait my number never came up. i went to pick up window to see what was going on. the girl told me "oh if it's a call in you come right to the window." your posted directions sure don't tell you to do that. my ticket number was displayed. i'd give a minus 5.star if it were possible.

So I just got off of hold (a 45 minute hold) to try and schedule a appointment that I was supposed to be called to schedule. They told me they couldn't get my son in until next month and the specialist that was supposed to see him decided WITH OUT SEEING HIM that he didn't need to be seen. Again, no one contacted me to tell me this. We only have the option between him being seen here or camp Pendleton who has no experience with premature babies. This is rediculous and they don't care about my son.

I was told if I didn't cancel all of my tricare ap...

I was told if I didn't cancel all of my tricare approved OB visits to a civilian provider, that I would pay out of pocket for them, because they decided they had room for me. Turns out, they don't have a single appointment available. They haven't made me one real appointment yet and I am 39 weeks pregnant. They put me on a walk-in list and have me call around to NTC and Miramar to see if there's ANYONE who can take me.

I waited 3 hours to be seen just to check my vitals the other day. I asked to file a complaint and was blown off. My husband showed up and was seen the same day, in person, to explain our complaint for lack of good medical care. Why am I lesser than he when it is my body?

My doctor actually didn't want to explain the process of induction to me, but wanted me to schedule for one that was not medically necessary. She didn't mind pointing out that it was her lunch break even though my children sat for 3 hours and had to skip lunch themselves and were in the middle of crying as she said it- same as last time.

She's the most disoriented doctor I've ever encountered and I trust her as much as I trust myself to deliver my own baby, even though I can not see past my belly. She couldn't make up her mind about whether I had diabetes and suggested we review my ultrasounds, but couldn't furnish those things or remember giving me all this reason to worry.

Even the customer complaint guy commented that they are aware the OB department is a mess and they are so overloaded that they don't know how to fix it. This is my 3rd child and the last, because I'll be damned if I get stuck with these people pouring stress into another pregnancy of mine as if that doesn't affect the baby!

Look at previous reviews by others- people actually say things like, "I would rather die than return here." "The staff was condescending." ETC, It's really sad. And good luck parking even if you do decide to try it: it takes about a half hour to find a spot. Even with my parking pass, there are no available spots to park in even designated areas and the stalls are so close together that you can't open your door on both sides of the car- you have to unload passengers then squeeze in, which makes getting small children out of carseats absolutely impossible, especially with a belly to work around. My kids have had to exit through the trunk. This place is the worst quality of care I've ever in my life dreamt of.

Went into the ER with a strained muscle in my back. Though I liked the young doctor who treated me, the other staff was not professional. Constantly joking around with each other while patients waited for help. There is also no privacy whatsoever. I was on a gerny separated by a curtain. On my left a guy was getting a prostate exam due to painful urination. On my right a guy was being treated for an STD & eye infection. I heard it all. THEN, A little old cleaning lady came in & emptied the trash by reaching in & grabbing it without changing the bag. The floors & walls were not clean either. I went straight home & took a hot shower scrubbing the hebegeebies off!

My visit to the ER was a pretty good experience. I was admitted within 5 minutes of my arrival. I felt they really tried to make my stay short-- but long enough to make me feel like they really cared about my comfort and problem.
They were very nice and tried to send me home with painkillers (that I didn't want) to make me feel comfortable between the ER visit and my trip to the OB/GYN to be diagnosed. My only complaint is that they didn't diagnose me while I was there (but I guess it's their job to sort out who needs care immediately and who can wait).

My six year old daughter was brought to Balboa via life-flight on 12 April 2015. She had uncontrollable seizures and threw up while seizing causing her to aspirate. She had to be put on a ventilator and flown from TriCity Medical to Balboa. EVERY doctor, nurse, corpsman, resident, intern and medical student did a PHENOMENAL job working on keeping my little girl alive. They were all professional, friendly and very willing to answer my questions. The entire staff, down to the cleaning lady, was approachable and took the time to check on myself and my daughter. We were there for a week, but she pulled through with flying colors. I am on the process of writing up a thank you letter to the Director of the hospital, listing the names of all of these amazing professionals that took such amazing care of my daughter AND took their own time to check up on us after we left the PICU to see how she was progressing. I HIGHLY recommend seeking treatment from any of the professionals that work at this facility. I served 22yrs in the Marine Corps and have not always had favorable experiences with Navy Medicine. My faith in the system has been restored after this recent ordeal and I will be forever thankful to the professionals at NMCSD Balboa.

Had some back problems a few times until the day I just got stuck. The doctors were very nice and patient with me. All the nurses were also just so kind and took such great care of me. My back is doing so much better now and I will be back for a check up in a few weeks.

I was admitted to NMCSD at the weekend for an urge...

I was admitted to NMCSD at the weekend for an urgent appendectomy - my first ever surgery and my first ever experience of US Naval healthcare. I was blown away by the staff I encountered. They entered the room with total professionalism and a visible sense of pride, but also exuded compassion and such a wonderful caring manner, regardless of who they were or what they were doing. I'm a military spouse and as my husband is away I was accompanied by a friend. The young Corpsmen who looked after us was efficient but unhurried, put me at ease, went out of his way for my comfort and really went the extra mile to ensure that my friend was also comfortable during her middle of the night wait for me to get out of surgery. The nursing care I received was patient, caring and good humoured. I felt like friends were looking after me.
I have never experienced such a warm and happy group of people in a hospital, and whilst I have no desire to be sick again, I would be very happy to be treated at this establishment again.
Well done guys! I tried to write to a senior person directly but couldn't find a route, so I figured I leave this here and then bring you donuts when I come for my check up in a couple of weeks time!

The wait times are terrible, especially the pharmacy. We waited over 2 hours because they forgot to call my number . To be honest, it s not entirely their fault since for some reason everyone who was once in the military decides to bring their entire family here even though they can go to a civilian hospital. Please if you aren t active duty, DON T come to this hospital. You are just going to make the wait times for people who are active, that have to go here, even worse.

Had my child here in 2016. That was great! Seeing the obgyn was unpleasant. I wanted my tubes tied afterwards. He immediately told me no. He told me to ask for my husband's permission first and "who knows? You might want another". I was very offended. It's my body and I still don't want a litter of kids. I was done at 2. How disrespectful.

SUPERIOR ATTENTION PROVIDED ME IN ER, MRI DEPT AND INTERNAL MEDICINE CLINIC.

NMCSD IS SURELY AMONG THE VERY BEST HOSPITALS ANYWHERE, MILITARY OR CIVILIAN.

PATIENTS WHO ARE COURTEOUS AND RESPECTFUL WILL ALWAYS RECEIVE COMPARABLE ATTENTION. THOSE WHO ARE NOT DO NOT MERIT SUCH.

Based on my most recent experience. Sailors with leg, knee, or foot injuries should not be told to go back to sick call on their ship. Seriously? Parking is a mile away from tbe ship if you are lucky and then you have to hike it up the brow and make it down the ladder wells to medical. Awesome. Try doing that with a painful knee that won't bend or extend. Thank you Balboa...

The pharmacy is a really bad joke at best. I dread any time I have to have my prescriptions refilled because it takes me an hour minimum, regardless of what time I show up. In the ~15 times I ve been here, there have never been any more than 4 people at the 12 windows they have. Every other part of the hospital is lovely, but the pharmacy needs a complete restructure; it s about as inefficient as it comes.

If you value your and your family's well being take them to a different hospital if possible. Under-trained and unprepared staff. Medical personal seem to have no idea what they're doing.

I normally don t leave reviews and especially a long one but I believe this one is well deserved!!!

My spouse, is active military. We are allowed to go to our closets ER where we live at. (Murrieta, Menifee and Temecula) However, the experiences are horrible. I saw malpractices and received lack of patient care. Two ER locations and an Urgent Care mis-diagnosed and did not identify what s going on with my spouse. Blood work, physical examination and X-ray. Nothing!!! Leaving him with so much pain and no medication. Over 18 days trying to find good doctor to help my husband and give him proper pain medications.

Oh yeah, previous years ER at Loma Linda (Murrieta) made unnecessary 2nd incision in the wrong area causing extra pain and more damage. Good reason not to take my spouse there ever again.

I live about 1 hr n 15-20 minutes away from Balboa Naval Medical Center. I decided to drive him there.

The first time we were at ER little after 12am, checking in was surprisingly decent and fast. Nurses and doctors doing their jobs, evaluating my spouse thoroughly and ultrasound. Finally, they found what s causing the pain but the surgeon advise to not operate on my spouse due to the location and possible complications. I was a bit upset because I don t want to see my spouse endure any more pain. They sent us back home with instructions, antibiotics and pain medications. Few days later I knew it was time to go back and I know he will finally get cut.

Second time in the ER. Checking in was fast and friendly. Same nurse and doctor greeted us. Very friendly and humorous. They remembered our case. Did a second ultrasound for verification and without hesitation they said, now they can do what needs to be done. My spouse is now on recovery mode after long 25 days of pain and discomfort.

Thank you to the surgeon at ER who made me understand and left me with no choice but to trust his decision. For my spouse s safety and prevent unnecessary complication.

To the ER staff, LT Ellis, Jeff, Lt Yu (student), LT Love, LT H (nurse) and rest of the staffs and nurses who attended to my spouse. Really thank you very much. very impressive how well LT Ellis guiding his student with the procedures and reminding to talk to the patient. Can t forget the humor! the funny comments, conversations kept me at ease. I was able to be calm and help my spouse be calm. LT Ellis, Jeff is a great teacher and mentor. Very impressive. Best ER for active military personnel.

February 27th 2016: 1. today I was at the Naval Hospital 1st for a blood test (It didn't hurt)! Tomorrow, I will be back for my medial evaluation follow up for prostate cancer. 2. After the biopsy I was informed of the cancer. My doctors suggested a treatment. Was I fearful? No. I had absolute faith & trust in their suggestions and the amazing capability of the hospital, the staff and the equipment. Results all went as planned. 2. Today, as I was walking through the walkways, I thought to myself, I wish I was young again,'cause this would be the place for my career in the field of helping people. 3. Tomorrow I will take photo's and post them on my Facebook for the general public and my family members on the east cost. I know for a fact that This facility (akin to many military & VA hospitals) is the best of medical personal, and all the modern equipment that is up to date for helping persons who are ill. Anyone reading this post, just might consider visiting the Naval Hospital and check into the volunteer programs. You'd me more than welcomed. Sincerely & encouraging yours, Bruce Warren Marchetta Th.d. professional hypnotherapist educator. and Volunteer for the VA hospital & clinics. Naval (Korean War) Veteran. God bless our military nation & worldwide.

Great hospital if you can ignore all the whiney military personnel and their dependa wives thinking they deserve special treatment for some reason. If they didn't come in for the smallest things, the wait would be shorter, but oh well. Dr's are nice and so is everyone else working there.

Everyone has always gone above and beyond to help in any way possible to resolve problems. In normal situations all staff are professional. Above all they have been kind and compassionate. I am thankful and grateful for all they do.

Not bad

I was at the ER last night and this bed had blood all over it. When I pointed it out to the nurse she simply stated that she would change the sheets. I refused to lay down on that bed, this is just unacceptable. I chose to sit on a chair instead staring at this blood covered bed. This is the dirtiest hospital that I have ever been to and to think that this is a military hospital. This is hazardous and I am going to report this.

I went in after falling while hiking & my finger clearly looks abnormal but according to the nurse she didn't think there was anything wrong with it and wrote it off as a bone spur (I also heard another nurse telling her that it doesn't make sense if I have never had an issue with that finger before). I don't even think she waited for my xray results, I could hear her calling to get a status for my xray and saying "I don't think there is anything wrong with it". But whatever right? I guess she just wanted to get off her shift or something. I am going to Kaiser today where I will actually get help.

Well when I was found fit for full I had a limitation that supposed to be marked and put on my paperwork it was not. I call my doctor and he tells me whatever is on there is what's on there.... I then following the paperwork do exactly what it says I am not supposed to do. I further injury myself and go to the ER wait 2 months for a new Dr and then I am finally able to get my restrictions on there. If you deal with pain management be cautious they do NOT care about you.

I'm the father for a labor and delivery situation. My pregnant wife was in triage for over 2 and a half hours. I was not allowed to sit in the room with her for "covid" reasons. Instead I was directed to a jokingly small waiting area that was not possible to "social distance" with several strangers. The staff didn't even bother to give any updates.

Moms be aware that fathers will not be allowed to be with you in triage.

Review for Dr. Rivera: conducted clean, efficient hernia repair with minimal scarring. Looks far better than what most hernia post-op patients look like, with huge lines down their stomach. Mine is just an inch and looks like a cool battle scar. Love it. Abdominals functioning great! Slowly building up my fitness to what it was a year ago, before my hernia became a big problem. Mesh doesn't feel strange anymore. Can do flutter kicks with legs out straight without my abs giving up. When I was fit, I still couldn't hold one leg straight, hovering over the ground, while the other one lifts (scissor kick with hold). Now, even just getting back into my hardcore stuff, I'm doing them, and I am so proud of myself! This repair has been so significant for me. To see that I can do a set of scissor kicks without bending my knees or taking a break...I just wanna cry for joy. Thank you, surgery team. Everyone from start to finish (waiting room, holding, pre-, present, and post-) were all amazing. Delighted to see nurses and doctors still be nice to the patient even with the continuous schedule of dealing with them. You guys work hard.

Review for Hospital: Next time, when there's construction going on and it blocks certain areas, don't make the signs impossible to understand where I'm late to my appointment. I was 30min early and ended up on time...which is late. That's bad, mmkay? Also, I was not called the day prior to my surgery and got the run around with the numbers provided. I called the first one to get the time for my surgery and she didn't know so transferred me to NON-WORKING NUMBER. SERIOUSLY. Get your act together on that. I'm a chill patient. When I was a kid I practically lived in a hospital so I know you guys work hard, but that was ridiculous. Had to call four times to get an answer. Fix this. Also, I saw a kid in the waiting room whose mom was told to come in super early. They had him in surgery gown and was waiting for hours. HOURS. WHY!? I was called BEFORE him. WHY!? You messed up. That poor kid. Kids shouldn't have to go through that. Neither should the parents. Awful. I'd give those two incidents negative stars but I really like Dr. Rivera and the general staff who helped me.

Darrell and Mrs. Margret were absolutely amazing and made me feel like a priority. They took their time figuring out my diagnosis and getting down to the issue at hand verses giving me a blanket diagnosis like most military ERs.

Thank you!

ER kicked my husband out while he was having seizures on the table. Not sure why I was called to drive all the way to my husbands work for the nurses to refuse to even help him or allow him to regain consciousness before forcing us out. They didn t even offer us a wheelchair, which is typical protocol for patients that have seizures. The rest of the hospital might be okay, but stay away from the ER if you actually need to be treated.

3 generations of my family have going to this hospital for over 70 years. Of course they tore down the first one years ago. My father and I were born on the same floor some 30 years apart. There is a family joke we may have been born in the same room. That building is long gone. But I cannot thank Balboa hospital enough for taking such good care of all my San Diego family.
