I haven't stayed here but was there for a wedding coordination effort. The staff is very friendly and professional. The provided was good. But if you are a vegetarian not much options, specially for desserts. If you are staying in a hotel room in order to avoid a wet floor, keep the balcony door closed if the room is facing the sea.
The Empire ballroom which we had the wedding was a sizeable place that can host 150-200 guests. The lighting is not that good. We wanted to increase the light during the registration but it was not possible. However generally for an event like a wedding its actually good ambiance is pretty good.

We weren't guests here. We merely asked if we could use the pool and beach facilities for the day as beaches in Columbo for swimming are few and far between. They treated us with the utmost care as if we were guests living there. A day works out at 1000 rupees. But if you have lunch there you can swim for free. The beach is beautiful and untouched. Sit back and have a draft beer for as little as 600 rupees.

The colonial architecture really is something to appreciate. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. Because we were day visitors we didn't have a room pass. So the gentleman at reception accompanied us to the beach all dressed in his fancy shoes that one wouldn't associate with beach wear, he went our of his way to make us comfortable and to settle.

If you are stopping through columbo and need a good spot to swim and relax. Go to Mount Lavinia Hotel. You can spend the whole day there.

We had the privilege of sharing Christmas lunch here with about 100 other Sri Lankan families. What a treat! Of course there won't be a Christmas dinner here every day, but the food was absolutely amazing! So have lunch here!!!

It's a must visit when in Colombo.. For a relaxed meal at the poolside with a stunning view of the city.. Visit the Governor's Terrace. It's a holiday mood, so expect chilled out, very casual service. A pleasant experience nevertheless

It is a bit sad for me to see our iconic, beloved, historic Mt.Lavinia hotel, where most of us even celebrated our weddings etc., gone into a state of disrepair, neglect now. I had few foreign guests (from UK and Spain) stay over here for about 20 days, and they said that the hotel needs a huge maintenance overhaul. They are repeat guests at the hotel, and they were bit sad about it, because they do love historic places. One could see the cracks on the floors of the room balconies. One could see the cracks on the outer walls of the rooms etc..etc. This is not just a paint and cement job of repair. Surely this needs a HUGE cost for a total repair/overhaul, where, maybe the owners/management is unable to bear such a huge undertaking ! But, isn't it a worthy enough investment, to preserve this iconic landmark of our nation ? We love this historic place and we want it preserved and protected, and not go into a state of neglect. On another note, I was there today in the lobby, meeting my friends. I ordered a coffee with milk, and a "maalu paang" (fish bun). I was so dissapointed ! I was eager to sip a PIPING HOT coffee. What was served was coffee and milk like the temparature of tap water, which I gulped up in three mouths, because I wanted to finish it off as soon as possible, because of the poor temperature of it. I could not relish it, as expected. The fish bun was equally disappointing. A normal fish bun at a simple bakery or at Perera and Sons will have a better filling inside it ! The filling inside your fish bun was two teaspoons or LESS, it was only just the bun part, with barely a good, tasty filling inside of it. My God, Mt.Lavinia hotel, please get your act together to maintain your standards of a basic coffee and a fish bun served at such a prestigious place !! My guests saw this.
I asked them about their buffet breakfast and buffet dinner which they have daily, and they said it was GOOD, so I'm happy to hear that.

Colonial charm, hotel steeped in history, warm welcome. Spacious and clean rooms, all services available. Nice view of the sea. Very lively, many weddings and sometimes a little noisy. Breakfast very well prepared. Restaurants of very good quality. Acceptable prices.

We love staying here whenever we come to Sri Lanka - it is practically our second home. Besides the brilliant breakfast buffet and stunning pool/terrace area, the staff are what keep us coming back. They are all so friendly and welcoming and we always find it hard to say goodbye. Tiddy's tour of the Mount Lavinia Hotel museum and tunnels was fascinating and he provided a great insight into the colonial history of the buildings. Looking forward to our next visit.

Visited a Governor's restaurant. I was sitting outside near the pool, the food was great and not too expensive, the view is absolutely fantastic - on one side you get a beautiful sunset and on other side you can see Colombo evening lights with a Lotus tower.

The only thing is that hotel looks a bit tired and outdated, lots of crows also. Overall, I really enjoyed my dinner. Definitely I will come back again!

An old, historical hotel.
I stayed at Christmas Eve.
The whole hotel became Christmas specification and was finished very cutely. In particular, the Christmas tree of lily flowers felt a sense of delicacy and good products.

Overall it was a very nice place.
The room is beautiful, but I felt that the cleanliness of the bathroom was not good enough.

Colonial house with tradition. The hotel is beautifully located by the sea, with access to a small beach. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and nicely furnished with old wooden furniture, the bathrooms are very old and could be renovated again. The buffet at breakfast is awesome, huge selection, various cooking stations, absolutely must if you stay here!

Even though the location and the hotel is quite pretty and homely the food was not quite the taste that I was expecting it to be. The service of the hotel staff is very good and appreciated. I would recommend the hotel for a stay but not for a function. Coffee and laundry service is really good. There are plenty of tasty dessert options for you to choose.

Tried the Poolside restaurant after ages. Even though it was chaos since the hotel was still adjusting to post 31st night celebrations, the service was quite good. The food seems to have gone up a couple of notches in quality for the same prices. The Club Sandwich was very good, as were the Beef Bolognaise and the fish and chips, basic dishes which are sometimes overlooked by the Chef and thus suffer a drop in quality.

If you are going for a dinner buffet just check their menu for the day. Every weekday they have different styles. My personal favorites are on Wednesday and Friday, Chinese and barbecue respectively
