Nice (but disappointed) colonial style 4 star hotel in need of refurbishment. Staff were really good, spoiled at the begining by impatient receptonist (see other reviewer with same comments).
Pros; nice colonial ambience, interesting tunnel linked to the name Lavinia, wonderful private beach, great views if you booked the right room, tasty breakfast with a reasonable choice, spacious room, fantastic staff spoiled only at the beginning.
Cons; receptionist needs more training, room needs refurbishment, could be cleaner (cobwebs and one cockroach), personal outdoor table and chairs need replacing, interesting wardrobe light switch (see pic), gym is a bit small with limited equipment, swimming pool a bit awkward design.

I was at the governor's cafe for dinner and the service was horrible and food was the same. Asked the waiter to suggest something good and immediately he suggested kottu (maybe because we were Sri Lankans ) he said their kottu is not like the ones on the street. So we ordered 2 kottu and 1 black pork curry with nan. The 2 kottu came quite dry and when we asked for some gravy he looked at us like we were asking him for something valuable. The black pork curry was Rs 800++ and it had 7 quite small peices of pork in it. The nan was hard and quite cold. I guess it was our mistake for asking for that food at that hotel.
The hotel says they are wheel chair accessable however from the lobby to the restaurant I had to carry my baby and her stroller while she was a sleep as the lift was not working. So wheel chairs should be aware of this. Then I ordered a tea and that was the world worst tea I had. It was basically water. I told the waiter and his answer that they make tea according to the foreigners and that maybe way it was light. Trust me this was not light it was pure water with tea colour . I work in the tourism industry and I don't know how they survive in the industry. I guess only from weddings.

We would give the hotel a * less. Old shabby rooms, old bathrooms, cleanliness well. Sea-view. Weird smell in the room. At night we had the air conditioning off and the next morning everything was damp in the room, even the bed linen on the floor left traces as it was damp. Breakfast mega delicious, a huge selection. Pool area with sea views.

We got married 17 years ago here, and spent 3 weeks in your country. Just the 2 of us & we got married in the beach hut & had the presidential suite for our wedding night. Everything went to plan & we have a lovely video for our memories. Would like to go back in a few years time with our son for a special Anniversary & tour the country again. Hotel with a rich history. However, there were several problems:

4) beach full of plastic. The beach was full of confetti from a party the night before, they did not bother to clean it up even when asked if was not disturbing to see all plastic blowing into the ocean. Their excuse was that there would be a new party the same night.
All in all I was not impressed, especially not for the price of $200 per night.

As usual very neat and clean beach. It is one the the best beach where you can organise private party and have full entertainment with family and friends. Well maintained by the hotel and services of hotel staff add value to the beach.
