Urgent care, twice now, both times the nurse and receptionist were lovely. Both times the doctor couldnt have cared less about my condition. Both times I went to the ER at MGH after and was fast-tracked to corrective measures.

1) Doctor said he couldn t do anything to relieve the hematoma under my fingernail. What kind of urgent care doesn t have one of those heated-point pen tools? This one.

2) A growth appeared in an unfortunate place and rather than telling me to just go to another ER to have it excised, the doctor told me that on Sundays there are no surgeons available anywhere . Completely false. Surgeons are always available at any respectable ER. Doctor couldnt be bothered to actually give me accurate information.

I will never go here ever again. Thank you MGH ER for always rectifying their shortcomings.

Really a mixed bag. Some receptionist and nurses go above and beyond to help out your situation, but some just turn you away immediately without any alternative options no matter how urgent your situation is. Then you need to run around trying to find that one person who's willing to help.

Update:

My older experience was OK, but the service today was excellent! They treat abdominal pain very seriously and promptly.

I was in fever having 102F, called MIT Medical Saturday 9am and asked for telephone instructions. Had to wait two hours and make 2-3 more calls to finally speak to a doctor. Was subsequently prescribed peptobismol for absolutely zero complaints of stomach problems (it was actually sore throat).
Visited next hour in person using Uber, got steroids that helped immediately.

Knowledgeable doctors, well-integrated care systems, and insurance and prescriptions are cheaper than Harvard. Have found it convenient to make an appointment and have never waited long. I am from EU and find MIT med compares favorably to systems in my home country. Have lived in Indonesia and China and have only had comparable care in Hong Kong. Have found the rest are v. unhygienic.

Came in to Urgent Care at 7am. Was seen promptly, RN and NP were both extremely efficient and caring. They offered several options for treatment, depending on how much pain I was feeling. They took extra care to ensure my prescriptions were sent to the right pharmacy.

I've heard there can be quite a wait when you come during the day. So come in early. I've also had some bad experiences in the past with other departments at MIT Medical. So, do your research, and know what to ask for.

In any case, the urgent care team did a stellar job.

I have only worked with Specialists here, and for the most part I have been happy with MIT Medical. There are a few things that you should be aware of.

1) The receptionist at some desks are really helpful, but the receptionists at some of the other desks are afraid to smile. If you feel they are not being nice, just smile and wait. You'll be out of the line soon and onto the doctor.

2) A really long wait time for specialist. The MIT medical staff are not all full-time employees, so they may only be in the office one or two days a week. This can lead to delays in getting appointments since they can be so booked up it may take a few weeks to get in.

I would recommend MIT Medical's Specialist to my family and friends, if they could get it. The doctors I have worked with have been examples of their fields and professional in their demeanor.

My son had strep throat for a couple weeks. A nursing student looked at his throat and said he need to see the doctor. Went here and they sent him home without as much as an aspirin! Terrible doctors!!! Just terrible.

I've been a student here for almost a decade. I think the nurses are great but all the doctors I've spoken with have been either wrong in their diagnosis or super-condescending. Went to MIT medical with symptoms of hiatal hernia only to have the doctor laugh at me and dismiss it as me making up symptoms. Went to MGH the next week on my own (luckily I had separate insurance then) and the doc there suspected hiatus hernia and set me up for a same-day endoscopy. Pictures/video showed an obvious hiatus hernia and I was able to start managing my eating habits to minimize risk of GERD/esophogeal cancer later in life.

It is scary thinking that I may have missed this completely if I had not visited MGH.

Horrible service.

Horrible service.

One doctor in urgent care had me promise after I was trying to convince her of crucial tests precribed by my PCP (who was not available that week and told me to pass by urgent care) that she would only do them if I promised she would not be responsible for following up with me on the test results. It was absolutely humiliating.

Wish I could rate different departments separately. Urgent care is AMAZING. Can be a bit of a wait at the wrong time but the people are lovely, kind, caring, and everything a healthcare team should be. The pharmacy is HORRIBLE. Seriously - get your meds somewhere else if you can. The pharmacists are unfriendly, unhelpful, and generally don t seem to give a damn about patients.

My experience with MIT medical in the past year has been a complete nightmare. Before I go into the details I must point out that I actually really like my primary care physician at MIT Medical and have only positive things to say about her. However, MIT pediatrics, Urgent Care, and pharmacy have been just awful. First, MIT urgent care prescribed incorrect dosage of medicine for my son and I only realized it because my son was prescribed the same medicine before. After the medicine problem was corrected, I was short 15ml of the medicine and MIT pharmacy refused to give me the medicine. Second, a doctor at MIT pediatrics misdiagnosed appendicitis as constipation even though I kept saying it could be appendicitis, resulting in complications that landed my son in the hospital twice. I filed a complain and as a result they are now overreacting. Just yesterday, my son's primary care physician freaked out and asked me to take my son to the ER over the phone when it was not warranted. I told her it could be strep throat but she refused to listen and threatened me by saying she would still ask me to take him to the ER anyway if I wait to have her examine him no matter the outcome of her exam. After multiple hours of waiting in the ER and unnecessary tests and ultrasound, the diagnosis was indeed strep throat. So basically she wasted my time and my money ($100 ER copay vs. $10 at MIT medical) as well as thousands of dollars of insurer's money.

I've been to a lot of doctors in my day. Not all of them have been particularly warm, welcoming, or acted like they wanted me there. Never so much as at MIT Medical, however, wherein I was scrutinized without a filter by Dr. Amirnazmi, who was appalled by the medication I was taking to the point of speaking most unprofessionally about it, as well as the state of my hair [something I am sensitive about] which was in bad shape due to illness. Her bluntness, abruptness, and the way she rushed around was exhausting. She did manage to listen to a couple of my concerns, but namely, I felt like a number instead of a person. I suppose that's the cost of attending a busy university facility, though. And it seems a lot of people had similar experiences.

I've had an astonishingly and consistently good experience with MIT Medical. The system is efficient and easy to navigate, with a minimum of paperwork or confusing bureaucracy. The care has been excellent, as has the experience of navigating administration.

generally positive experiences! i love Dr. Shapiro, and i have had generally awesome experiences with the nurses etc. Even the helpdesk tries to go above and beyond. Once, when i was going to have a slight gap in my provision due to a change of status but for health reasons, i really couldn't afford a gap in coverage, the MIT plan office tried to contact other officers higher up the food chain to expedite my process. I'm sorry for the other folks' negative experiences, but MIT medical has been really, really good to me.

As a long-time member of the MIT community, I've used the MIT Medical Department for many years. The MDs, nursing staff, and administrative staff are caring and able. I've had excellent care.

On the few occasions I need to see my Primary Care Doctor the clinic only ever gives me an appointment approx 4 weeks away. Each time I have made an appointment for an annual checkup the original appointment is cancelled and another one made at a significantly later date. It is comforting and stress reducing to know I can use the English NHS when in England. The counter staff range from being unfriendly (therefore stress inducing) to friendly.

I hate to see the bad reviews! I have Dr. Shapiro who is excellent. I have only had prompt great service at the desk, in the eye clinic and with x rays. I have been going to MIT medical for over 5 years and have never had an issue. The dentistry was another story but the medical has been great.

As a student coming from one of those apparently 'evil' European countries with 'socialist' healthcare systems that are derided by American politicians... I was expecting something pretty marvelous from MIT Medical.

In the end, I found myself a little bit disappointed by the level of service; 2-3 weeks wait for an appointment are common. My 'evil socialist doctor' in Europe can see me the next day, or same week at the worst.

Worst. Very slow. It takes avg. 2 hour before talking to a nurse. No doctor at first sight. No appointment. I come here because of school insurance. But I will never come here if I have to pay myself

Extremely sexist.

Extremely sexist.
The first time I went with light-headedness, fatigue, and fainting spells, they wrote it off as "this is normal for women" and told me to "just go eat some protein." It took them a week to diagnose me with anemia and repeated effort on my part to say "I think this is what my symptoms mean."
Now having abdominal pain up to my ribs, they won't throw off the theory of menstrual cramps. Pretty sure my uterus doesn't go up into my ribcage, thanks.
I've had a friend who went for wrist pain which they diagnosed as a sprain; it was fractured.
They obviously try to rush diagnoses and "wait out" any illnesses they can't think of off the top of their heads.

I m sorry, but I just can t trust MIT Medical again. I went in a couple weeks ago because I was showing extreme signs of chills and not being to stay awake. MIT Medical diagnosed me with dehydration (no shir, I couldn t get out bed to get water), and let me go after giving me some fluid and a gatorade. They did this even after measuring my blood pressure and seeing a horrifyingly low number of 50/something. When I got home, I passed out, and ended up in the ER a day later, with a diagnosis of sepsis (which is apparently DEADLY). I m very lucky to be alive, I attribute it to my sister who realized something was very wrong right away and urged my roommates to check on me. But I just feel that by ignoring my symptoms, MIT Medical essentially killed me. I didn t know what was going on and trusted them to help, but they did not. Please at least call an ambulance next time you don t know, I don t want more parients to die because of your incompetence. Sorry for the harsh words, but I believe they re true, I feel extremely scarred and am terrified of MIT Medical. Love, Rachel.

Incompetent medical staff. I had a sinus infection, but they didn't diagnose it. They diagnosed it when I visited them again after 2 weeks as my condition wasn't getting better. The doctor prescribed antibiotics, but the prescription was never sent to the pharmacy in central sq and I had to return without medicine as they close early. I will have to wait for them to open in the morning.

Terrible service. They treat people's life as a joke. Told me that blood work results would arrive in a day, it's been 4 days, multiple phone calls for inquiry and 3 in person visits. They always say, they'll call by the end of the day, they never do.

Dr Angela Fowler is the primary care provider I consulted with. She is very professional, patient and follows the best logical course of treatment while taking prompt action. One of the best providers I have encountered. The staff in general also was very courteous.

Very difficult to schedule an appointment within 2 months (my experience with eye exams and general checkups). My most recent appointment was rescheduled 3 times. Doctors are fine, if you can actually see them.

edit: they've also stopped doing routine care throughout COVID-19
