Merrifield Garden Center Review

Wonderful for gardeners but expensive. They do orchid replanting.

This garden center has so many plants and trees and dirts and pots and stuff you don t even know where to begin. If you ask an employee about a landscaping project you re working on, or about a specific plant you may be looking for, they can point you in the proper direction. The parking is a gravel lot, but doesn t have much in the way of holes and dips. I highly recommend them for your garden needs, just keep in mind their prices are slightly on the high side of things.

Such a gorgeous nursery! I recently got into gardening a year ago and I love to go to nurseries and garden centers on dates (whether alone or with my boyfriend) and this, by far, takes the cake! My boyfriend got me a croton (amongst other things) for our anniversary so I had to stop by this place. There is a great selection for indoor and outdoor plants and flowers, I was amazed. I don't live near here but anytime I visit Vienna, I am sure to stop by.

I went here to buy a bonsai plant. The selection was great, although I found their prices to be a bit overboard. For a tiny 5 inch pot, I paid $45, and had I bought a bonsai elsewhere, I could have gotten more for my buck. But I paid for convenience so, no biggie. This was my first time going, so when I got there, I was shocked by how packed it was. Maybe it's just because of the holidays, but there were so many people. This was good because it gave me the impression that it was well managed, but as I ended up needing assistance to find supplies for my bonsai plant, there were no associates to be found. One lady didn't even try to help me and instead gave me directions to search for an employee on my own, as she was too busy organizing her aisle. Eventually, I found an associate in a different department who was willing to help me search for what I was looking for. So all in all, they have a great selection for bonsai plants, the price is a bit up there but you pay for convenience I suppose, and during the holidays I would like to see the assistance improve as I will need to be returning to keep my bonsai plant healthy.

UPDATE:

After having my bonsai plant for a few days, I noticed the leaves had white spots on them that I tried to wipe off the first day but they didn't go away. Being a new plant owner, I didn't know what this was and was extremely concerned about my bonsai plant. I found out it was mildew so I ended up having to cut 85% of my bonsai leaves off to prevent further infection and treating my plant with Neem oil. So if you get a plant from this place, look at it very closely. After a few weeks, the leaves have grown back and are green as ever!

Merrifield has a wide selection of plants but expect to pay for that variety, the staff, etc. in the price of the plants.

Had them install a replacement tree last year. This year we had a few lower branches that did not bloom. Once i got a hold of the right person, Merrifield sent out someone to look at the tree. They pruned and re-shaped the tree within days. It looks great. They even extended the warranty another year before i could ask. I love that they stand behind their work and will work to make the customer happy. Very happy with their support. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful.

This was one of the best stocked garden centers with knowledgeable staff to assist you in any way. Quality stock at decent pricing. Has been around for a long time.

More expensive than Home Depot but worth it

I visited this store when they had their Christmas decorations up. The shear volume of decorations was amazing! Do many cookies and colors of trees, lights and ornaments. I especially liked the very Nordic styled Christmas room.

They had a great selection of African violets.

We have made some great investments with other gardening businesses but what sets Merrifield Garden Center apart is their concrete knowledge on all of their inventory. We had a vision of the tree we wanted and they helped us with all the options and NAILED IT. We purchased a beautiful Ruby Falls yesterday and this morning she was delivered. It was delivered by Andrew who was just a knowledgeable as the people that helped us on the lot. We are 100% satisfied with the services provided and highly recommend them for your next purchase. Well done MGC you have found loyal customers in us.

Though expensive for some things, they are certainly experts at all things that grow.

I have been to many garden centers and nurseries, but Merrifield by far has the biggest selection of plants, garden products, and tools. In addition, the people who work there are very familiar with their inventory, and the plant clinic has helped me identify and address numerous issues related to my plants and soil. This is my go-to nursury

They sell great plants, knowledgable and pleasant staff. It's worth the trip and money.

This is the original Merrifield Garden Center. The plants are beautiful and the staff is super helpful. This garden center is the smallest of the three; but, they are packed full of flowers.

Parking can be a little tricky as this garden center is extremely busy. This is a great garden center with everything you nerd for your gardening needs.

Prices costly but guality abounds and so does care and love they have in everything!

Everybody who works there seems to be knowlegable and helpful but more than that, the place is extremely well stocked with every sort of obscure plant you may be looking for. It is so pleasant to shop at Merrifield Garden center be there that I frequently linger for a while just strolling and "window shopping" so to speak long after I have found what I came for.

Always super helpful staff and a huge selection. You can definitely find anything and everything you need. And it looks amazing around the holidays.

I was VERY disappointed with the very limited selection of office plants. The reviews led me to believe that there would be a far better selection. The sales rep was not helpful -- downright unfriendly, didn't ask if I needed help, gave off a hostile vibe, and berated a child for getting too close for the plants. Many of the plants didn't come with instructions for care. I specifically made a trip from DC because some of the reviews suggested that this is the best nursery in the area. Never again -- DCers, do yourself a favor and stay in the district. It's not worth the trip.

Wonderful place to get anything you may need for your garden. Only reason that I gave it a 4 is the scooter wasn't charged and it was confusing to use. Employees were extreme helpful and friendly.

Been going here for 25 years. Knowledgeable staff, probably most knowledgeable on the area. Has a indoor plant clinic where they will tell you what's wrong with the plant. Large selection of indoor and outdoor plants. Has ceramics too.

Finally got to visit and close out my hat trick of Merrifields! Not a bad selection of houseplants/tropical plants in the greenhouse given the space they are working with. I think I need to come back and visit when it's warm out so I can get the full experience. Prices are definitely on the higher end of things, even if you compare them to their own Fairfax and Gainesville locations, which was disappointing for me. I ended up leaving and going to my local location to pick up more single stalk lucky bamboo which is why this isn't a 5-star review.

Good selection and generally helpful staff but prices are way up there. One - that s one- marigold plant was $4-5!

This was my third trip to Merrifield Garden Center and I was not disappointed. In fact, I was more impressed than ever by the great customer service I received from Missy. She was incredibly busy, but she took time to help me select the perfect plant for a planter I had chosen. She went out of her way to be helpful, in spite of several rude customers interrupting us and demanding her immediate attention. She was patient and pleasant, even if they weren t. I will continue to be a loyal customer.

The staff is very helpful, and the plant selection is great. They are a bit on the pricey side compared to some of the local competition, but the grounds are better kept and the number of staff available to assist (whether it be consulting, loading your car/van/SUV, or giving you directions when you get lost in the bushes) make it our regular stop.

Last night, the experience was good and had all the right items to fill up our living room for Christmas this year.

Merrifield Garden Center has a nice size lot with plenty of garden options and the employees take care of it. The location was easy to find and parking was simple.

The only thing missing was my very favorite person at Merrifield, bring her back!!! She is like Christmas Joy withk all her super sweet plant and flower knowledge. I ll definitely come again, especially if my Angel Anouk G is there.

Rip offs. Paid 100 dollars to dump wood chips 2 weeks ago. Now one person said $250 and another person said $200??

2 stars because the delivery driver gave my SO the receipt for my Valentines day flowers, a bit tacky in my opinion. Made our dinner date later that night a bit uncomfortable since she felt like her gift to me wasn't as good since she saw what I spent on the flowers alone. Also, the delivery man made her feel a bit uncomfortable waiting around for a tip. She didn't give him one because the receipt he gave her was a $30 delivery fee to go 2 minutes down the road.

The online service, customer support via the phone was great.

Great knowledgeable people for quality products. Able to support any kind of growing efforts inside or outside.

Don t buy topsoil here. Their topsoil is clay mixed with sand and mulch and exorbitantly overpriced at that. Could not be more disappointed after getting 4 cubic yards delivered.

Compensating for high prices by offering ready access to excellent tree/plant/lawn care advice

This is my happy place. It's such a beautiful place to walk around and explore, during all four seasons. The staff is helpful and kind. When my son was little, we used to come here and look at the koi fish, fountains and statues. Now, whenever I have a bad day, I find myself here... looking at the orchids, ribbons, and outdoor displays. The resplendent, decorated trees in December are a big part of my Christmas. I have also actually bought plants and decorations but I really browse more as I live in an apartment.

The quality of the plants are outstanding. I bought some seasonal plants there and they lasted the whole summer last year, well into the fall. I had the same plants from two other sources mixed in and they didn't half as well yes, (I kept tags of which ones came from where, as I had just moved into the area and wanted to know which nursery to trust).
The visual appeal of the place is good, but I rating it poor to fair because it is overpriced and, as another reviewer has pointed out, prices vary wildly. A "floor" salesman told me a tree would cost about $300 planted (the tree was about $200 + $100 for the planting service). On another area of the trees, another quoted me $300 (for a tree that was $125 and in the same size container as the previous tree, meaning the planing service was $175!) The cashier gave me a "printed estimate for that first tree at $525!!!. I had no idea whom to trust and ended up buying trees elsewhere.
Service is good, in general, but can't really trust what you are told, so I must rate it poor to fair.
Lesson learned: best place for plants that you can self-service yourself, take home and be done with it. Not a recommendable place if you depend on their service...

I have been going to Merrifield for years. Their prices are somewhat high but the quality is worth it. The staff,especially Heather, are knowledgeable and always eager to help. If you have a problem they will take care of you until you are satisfied. It's a pleasure for your eyes just to walk through their nursery. Enjoy some time there and then have lunch outside when the weather warms up. A perfect day!!

Extremely helpful advice re fall seeding of a problem area in the yard.

I feel like these guys overcharged me when I hired them to re-do my garden. The result was good but not great. I wouldn t say was fully satisfied. They are an awesome bunch of workers though.

Expensive but amazing. They're not cheap but 1) their plants are amazingly lush, and 2) the Christmas tree displays are worth a visit just to look at them even if you don't buy anything.

I requested a landscaping consultation to come to my house to address a very neglected yard. The guy who came seemed aloof. He didn't take any notes or pictures which seemed odd but I though maybe he had a good memory. Although he suggested not to put a lot of money into a rental I wanted the yard to look nice for the money I'm about to spend. In the end, his proposal was like the notes he didn't take. It was lacking many key areas in the front that we talked about and was very basic. The consultation was a waste of time and money and felt that I should have just gone to the center and spoke to the people in the garden center for free who had much more interest, enthusiasm and knowledge.

Place was good if you already know what you need. Otherwise staff wasn't really helpful for beginners.

Always the best advice and it has been established through our experience with Merrifield Gardens , that they know this area well. Advice over past 5 years have been exceptional well . pertaining to our lawn . We own townhouse in Springfield area

When an issue came up with a recent purchase I had made at MGC, I was put in contact with a landscape manager "Danny". I have been working with landscaping since the 1970's and have never encountered an individual so eager and intent on helping me and settling the problem. Frankly I was in near disbelief throughout the whole process. After a phone conversation with Danny the first evening I received a follow up email the following day to see if any further assistance was needed. What! Unfortunately the norm is you make numerous calls to businesses and nothing gets done. My experience was the opposite with MGC. I am in total awe of the service I received and only regret that I can only give 5 stars.

Helpful staff and wide selection in a nice layout make shopping at Merrifield's a joy.

My family's been going to Merrifield Garden Center to see Santa for decades. Sadly the staff is experiencing a turnover this past year so it won't be the same. The Christmas shop has tons of ornaments free popcorn and free punch it is a great experience

Great garden shop, a little more expensive, but worth the cost. Great selection and varieties as well as natives that are better for birds and butterflies.

Howard Saunders, the GM, is the BEST! He single-handedly made me a Merrifield fan. He was kind, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful! I was attempting a rose project and he was so awesome at helping me with everything that I needed. I am so glad I was able to meet and work with him! Thank you so much!

Best selection in the area - so nice to have access at one place. Their high standards are apparent in their nursery maintenance and organization. They offer a wide range of varieties of oh so many plants and anything you might need that is plant & landscaping-related...make sure to allow yourself plenty of time at this gem of a nursery.

Excellent place in the spring. A beautiful selection of flowers and plants. The only issue is that it is a huge place and it might be a bit confusing to find your way around from the gardens to the store where you pay for your selection.

They are definitely more expensive than most other nurseries but I thought I was paying for better quality plants. I purchased 35 plants and 4 trees. One of the dog woods was not growing at all unlike the other trees. We have a 10 zone sprinkler system and the yard is professionally maintained. I called them to discuss the issue and was told that it can take over a year for the root system to develop. Now, its been 2 years and there is no/vy little progress. I called again and was told that the warranty is only for 1 yr??? and they will not replace this tree. I spent over 2K on plants/trees and I specifically called within a yr to complain about this dog wood and was asked to wait it out...To be fair, they do have experienced professionals.

The best garden center in NOVA. A little pricey, but top quality merch keeps people coming back. Very crowded on weekends

Wow, what a beautiful place! The staff was very helpful and knowledgable. I described the plant I saw in a neighborhood and they took me right to it and educated me on the plant and the speices. I will be shipping for my house there!
