I had my labor and delivery here and they were so short staffed that they were rushing mom's to deliver. They did not follow protocol for delivery when complications arose because of the rushed delivery, and because of this my baby was delivered too fast and ended up choking on amniotic fluid from hours after she was born until about 1 week old. Litigation will be initiated soon.

We had an awful experience with the med/surgical nursing staff. The med/surgical nurse decided she knew what was best despite the surgeon, pre-op nurses, and op nurses agreeing with our request. She was extremely rude and asked overly personal questions that were not pertinent to our care. The billing was also not clear. We thought we had paid everything in full to only receive a bill a month later for thousands of dollars and then to find out months later the anesthesiologist isn't part of Meriter staff, but an independent group that sent their bill nearly a year after the procedure. The hospital staff (minus the med/surgical nurse, anesthesiologist) and the building itself were nice. I am certain the procedure did not actually cost the hospital as much as we were charged, but like majority of hospitals, medical groups, and health insurance companies in this country, how much money they can generate in revenue is their greatest concern, not the patients they are supposed to provide care for.

I was vomiting, and not sure if they were short staffed but had to discharge me because I had no reason to stay as my vitals came back normal, but I was obviously in a horrible state just vomiting out in the lobby waiting for a cab to get home in the middle of the night. Currently a first year university student as well.

ER Dr. Karl Nibbelink is the rudest and most unprofessional healthcare professional I have ever met. He didn't care about my medical issue, tried to discharge me early, and then tried to patronize me. Hey arrogant guy, be a doctor not a jerk. I rarely go to the ER but if I did in future it would be UW.

My husband was stage 4 bone cancer and was having adverse reaction to immunotherapy so was admitted to try and stabilize. The doctor at hospital decided his main goal was to make my dying husband have a bowl movement and took his pain meds away!!! This caused undue suffering and pain. Even when asked pain level and he replied 10!!! They did nothing to alleviate his pain! Nurses were complicit. Doctor should be fired. No compassion. Where was the Hippocratic oath?

Worst ER care ever!!! Went on a Sunday. Doctor didn't even examine my injured knee. Came up with a bullshit diagnosis and then prescribed me medication I can't even take because he didn't read my chart. Was kicked out after 20 minutes!!! After seeig my actual doctor, found out I have a serious injury. Thanks, Meriter.....NOT!!! Avoid Dr. Herm!!!

These ER responses surprise me.I was in Meriter ER 3 years ago with a torn Patelar tendon. Dr diagnosed exact problem, no waiting, nurses great, didn't stay for a meal. They set up for surgery which went very well. In again last August for a gran mal seizure, same Dr! who remembered me! He again was very professional, nurses were also, everyone took my circumstance and my ER admission seriously and professionally. Brought my wife there 2 years ago with a serious attack of Vertigo, same excellent care. I'd recommend Meriter ER and Meriter inpatient to anyone in Madison. Tom H

The quality of care has decreased drastically over the last few years. Customer service on the phone and in person is very poor but the way this hospital has handled COVID-19 and the pandemic is disgusting. I have been treated better by animals. These doctors spent more time voicing their personal opinions about what could be causing my medical issues than actually running test to find out whats wrong with me.

What an awful experience at meriter. I went to visit a friend and my car has no power steering so it's really hard to turn from a complete stop. And the security guard detained me till the police showed up because apparently I was a driving erratically. I will never go to Mariner again. Not even to visit.

Could I rate zero star or negative stars? I did ONE ultrasound but they charged me twice, I talked with the nurse and the bill department, nobody help me with that. And I changed to another hospital, UW health, it s right cross the street. And the bill (after insurance) at unity point meriter for one ultrasound is about 15 time higher than the bill for the same ultrasound in UW health after insurance. So before you go there, it s better to prepare enough money, loans, sale your house and cars.

Husband admitted five times. Severe pneumonia. LONG waits. Twice taken to a Emergency room that hadn't been cleaned from previous patient. Once into a hospital room that hadn't had the prior patience urine catcher removed, and a stack of wet dirty towels in the corner of the bathroom. HE HAS A COMPROMISED IMMUNE SYSTEM and this may have prolonged his illness. We are switching insurances so we can get back to UW Hosptial. They've gone way down hill since being bought out by a corporation.

Amazing nurses! Just had a baby there and were looked after by at least 10 different ones, all of them so incredibly caring and helpful. They really made the birth experience a lot more manageable. Great doctors as well. I really can't complain about anything. Thanks OB team!

Yesterday I had such high hopes of thinking it was finally going to be the end of a long road my dad has had with alcoholism as he was transferred to the er from tellurian detox center. Unfortunately, that is not even close to what I felt after leaving. I left feeling extremely disappointed and hopeless. I have never left a hospital, especially Meriter feeling like it was just a complete waste of time. A girl came who was with the new start program, which he has been to numerous times, and many different groups since before I was born and I am 30. I thought we would be discussing realistic lasting solutions, when all we ended up discussing was group therapy. I had stated my concerns with group therapy, being as my dad is 55 and has been an alcoholic for 35+ years and as we all know with substance abusers, history does repeat itself time and time again.I discussed residential treatment, she briefly talked about that and just basically swept it under the rug as if it weren t really an option. My dad is someone who is waking up at 6 in the morning and has to drink alcohol to stay alive and not go into withdrawal and seizure. I can t believe that group therapy was even an option? I am extremely confused as to why they would think that is a solution for him. Common sense should tell them to maybe get their head out of the clouds and realize this is a bigger issue that group therapy clearly is not going to tackle. My dad stated he wanted one on one therapy. The social worker said the wait list is about four months for a psychiatrist. So we circled back once again to group therapy. In which it was a Sunday so he was unable to contact those places until Monday. He was shaking, sweating, nose was running, face was swollen, hands were yellow, and using the bathroom about every half hour. Either the new start girl or the social worker stated he looked pretty good as far as withdrawing is going. I couldn t believe that. I felt no one was truly educated on what a person who s condition is severe as my dads needs. He was sent home with about four packets of information, not given any medication to subside the withdrawal or subside the alcohol use. A doctor never came into his room at all. We were there for 3 and a half hours to talk to two people. I really have lost faith in Meriter and the health care system as a whole. All in all this experience was a complete joke. They did not take the severity of his condition serious at all I felt. And he was just released home. In my opinion, they might as well just have gave him the bottle back right there in the hospital.

5.31.16.....been at the hospital since 6 am, as we were told to come in and register for procedure to happen at 8 am. Doctor came in after 8 am gave some lame excuse and said it has been pushed to 11. It's almost Noon, still sitting and waiting, with no updates other then extra blood sugar test. This is ridiculous Meriter this not how you treat your patients. And we certainly shouldn't be charged for your flaws and lack of communications amongst your own staff. You could of certainly forseen this and be contacting your patients to come in at a later time. Instead of making them wait over 6 hours for a procedure. Patients are already dealing with anxiety and being nervous and you adding to it because you can't get scheduling correct. You should be ashamed of yourself and hospital for this crap. Getting ready to self discharge and set up with a different hospital at different date. Reminder we work hard also at our jobs and had to make changes in our schedule to be here per the time you scheduled us to be here. Get it together!

If you are a tier phase 1a person and have been approved by the local health department to receive a vaccine at Meriter, Do not let Meriter keep you from having the vaccine!! The local health dpt said my vaccinator is Meriter and they will be contacting me to schedule. When I did not hear from Meriter in a week and called, they said they are not offering the vaccine to the public, only their staff. When I emailed the local health dpt Meriter emailed me soon after to their link to schedule on their calendar. I couldn t schedule because the times coincide with the days I work. When I called the number to schedule with the vaccine team, the person checks my records and saids the vaccine is only available to people 65 and older. Really?? I m not 65 (yet!) but do not discriminate! She then saids hmm ok you are on the list but we can schedule you only for mid February or tomorrow only. I schedule for tomorrow but then I check the calendar in the link today and there are openings next week.
They make it impossible for phase 1a people in the public, they should not be given the vaccines!!

I was blessed to be able to birth a beautiful baby with Dr. Maya Gross on Monday. She was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. I was planning a home birth & ended up with a very large blood clot so I had to have a hospital birth. I ve been grateful to have the high risk perinatal team on my side as well. I haven t run into a doctor that has been comforting yet! I can t rely my appreciation enough for finding the right doctors and amazing nurses in every single situation that s arisen. Meriter not only saved my life but helped me bring another into the world! Forever grateful for Meriter!!!

This is the worst hospital I have ever been to. My wife is 41 weeks and had contractions less than 2 minutes apart and lasting minutes but because they are under staffed and because there are more people coming in, she gets sent home to have to go all the way back again? We had to walk all the way to the car with her in labor! We had an appointment to induce too but she started having contractions before hand so now they won't induce either. You can say sorry all you want but that doesn't change the fact that something like this shouldn't be happening in the first place.

Edit: After reading the review, the hospital staff contacted me and thankfully reverted the bill that I complained about. Happy that someone cared in the end (so improving my rating by two starts), I just hoped it had happened at the beginning itself.
Lies and creates exorbitant bills for customers, with customer representatives not to help but to take advantage.
I was in US for the last couple of days and didn't have a job (and thus no insurance) before leaving the country for good, but I still went there for my wife's 20th week ultrasound. We told at their Cash/Accounts/Finance section upfront that we don't have insurance, and asked for the total cost of a regular 20th week ultrasound of a pregnant woman to be paid in full by me. My HSA card still had $600 left and I said I wanted to go for it only if that can cover the cost. The lady there told me that unless there are some complications, the cost is generally $500 to $600, and since I don't have insurance she can offer me a 20% discount. I was happy, because that would mean around $480 max after discount. When I received the bill (by that time I had already long left the country for good) it was more than $1000, and very conveniently they took out 20% of that as promised. Thus, the bill was $800 instead of around $480 that they had told. And no, there was no complication etc., it was a standard run of the mill 20th week ultrasound test and nothing else (and they charged only for using their hospital "facilities" because the referring doctor anyway charged separately). The worst thing here is, I have to pay now these huge sums when I don't have that much income, and that too from another country with much lower valued currency. And all that because of their mistake - I wouldn't have got the ultrasound test done had they told me it would cost that much. On that premise, they had already charged us $300 in advance.
To top that, I contacted their customer representatives multiple times, and no one was there to do anything to my problem, and one of them said, why don't you give us the remaining $300 in your card, promising to send a package through email which could help me reduce the amount I have to pay as I have no US income anymore. I paid, but of course no package ever arrived, that was a trick to get me pay whatever I had left. And sure no one knew the doctor who created the bill, so that I can't contact anyone. Now they're threatening to go to collection agencies for the remaining amount rather than sending any helping package.

I will never ever go to a hospital other than meriter! I've been in Madison for a few years now and st. Mary's and UW do not even come close to the type of care I have received at meriter. I am pregnant with my first child and every doctor I have had from prenatal unit, to my OB to the ER have been nothing but amazing. I truely do not understand the negative reviews!! Yes, sometimes things don't go as quickly (like the ER) as I would like at times, but it's an ER. They have good and bad days. Even with the nurses and doctors running around trying to get to everyone my care has always been exceptional and beyond expectations!!

My father has been on the 600 floor for the past week and it has been nothing but a good experience. This is the first hospital that ever listened to our concerns and taken care of him as a whole. There was no "that's not what you are here for." They are treating everything exceptionally well. His wound care nurse (Marty) has been the answer to our prayers. He changed the whole game and no one has ever paid so much attention to our father and his care before. Every one of his nurses, aids and CNAs have been exceptional. If we have a concern, they deal with it. They don't wait for the next shift, they don't push it off. They call for help and get it done and its incredible. Even the cleaning ladies have been so nice, not only are his needs being met but they are making sure we (his children and wife) are comfortable as well. They are not discharging him early like most places do and Care Coordination is being wonderful in helping with discharge instructions and resources. I cannot say enough good things about this place. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. You saved him.

As I tell everyone new to Madison who's looking for a doctor/healthcare system: I strongly recommend that you do NOT go here. Dealing with overinflated charges and opaque billing from Meriter has been the single worst customer service experience I've ever received.
My experience was like Piyush's below. Prior to receiving an outpatient surgery (straightforward, a removal of adenoid tissue), I attempt to find out from multiple people at Meriter what the cost would be. Each told me they would get back to me, and I never heard back. I looked online at various sources and saw that total costs for adenoidectomy ran at most, $5k-$10k.
After the surgery, I received a professional services and hospital services bill of ~$2,000, after my insurance paid their portion. Given that that represented the 10% coinsurance I was responsible for, they billed a total of $20,000 (!) for the 1.5 hour procedure (if it even took that long - I fully expect that they took 1/2 that time but billed for the booked OR time). Insane.
Afterwards, after spending hours on the phone, nobody could tell me why exactly it cost that much. Multiple labs and tissue samples were included on the bill, none of which anyone could satisfactorily explain to me, and only one or two of which I was told about beforehand. Every item looked inflated past real-world belief ($150 for that hospital paper gown?), such that no single item really popped out.
Then, two years later, after reconciling an anesthesia bill, a hospital services bill, and a professional services bill, I find out that I have yet another bill, which I never received, which is now in collections. Turns out they contracted a surgical pathology consult out to another group, which failed to bill me properly. Nobody told me about this bill. Nobody told me I received this service. It's a game of "imagine every possible thing you think they could charge you for, add a zero to the end of what you think it'll cost, then draw twice as many blank lines for them to write in everything you failed to imagine."
And my doctor (ENT) was awful as well.
Sleazy and rotten, all the way through.

My fiance was admitted at 2pm after undergoing his usual bi-weekly Chemotherapy for Hodgkin's Lymphoma with a 700 blood sugar count. Its currently 4:57 pm, we've literally have been waiting 3 hours to see a Dr. Worst hospital I have EVER been too. At 700 your organs begin to shut down and no one seems to concerned. I will not be allowing him to come back here if he needs to be admitted again!!

Such poor communication, the most uncaring, impersonal nurses I've ever met. The doctors told us different things each time they came into the room. Talked about my wife's health in FRONT of us. Had to tell her to talk to us. I don't know where those doctors learned to talk to people. Our clinic is awesome. Meriter though? I would avoid this place at all costs.

I was visiting my daughter in Madison when out to dinner, I felt extremely ill. I was taken to Meriter by ambulance. The paramedics were very nice and efficient. Upon getting to the ER, I was taken right back and seen right away by the doctor on shift. The medical staff was caring, respectful, and efficient. All major medical events were ruled out with several tests and I was discharged within a reasonable amount of time considering all of the tests that were run. Doctor Sara Heiser and Nurse Abbey we re both excellent and came in several times despite a full ER.

I m only giving Meriter three stars because of the doctors that treated and saw me here. They were extremely knowledgeable, compassionate and helpful in diagnosing my problem. The nurses, however, are something else.
They are rude, angry, impatient, and mean. I had to get two shots and they stabbed them into my arms both times. After I received my prognosis, this nurse barged into my room twice, telling me to pick up my stuff and get out. Apparently Meriter doesn t allow patients to stay in their room beyond 10 minutes after discharge even though no one was waiting to be seen. Feel free to go here if you want to be treated like a disposable object. You re just extra income in their books.

I was a Trauma nurse coast to coast for over 12 years at multiple sites. I want to thank the ER staff for their high level of professionalism and great care.
Holly, Elisha, Cory, the registar, x ray tech ( sorry guys i forgot your names or missed them) and Scott were at their best. Even when I refused a test, due to questionable insurance, they made it their duty to try to persuade me to have the test done. Of course, they were ABSOLUTELY RIGHT to try and convince me to have it done. I would have done the same.
An extra special thank you to Cory for really doing an outstanding duty as an RN to be a patient advocate even when the patient is not right. Thanks buddy. Real stand out in patient care and really trying to get that x ray done.
Holly, you did and amazing job with the wound care and irrigation.
Elisha, great local. Really done well with minimal pain.
Scott, I know it's never easy when a patient refuses a treatment or a test, but thank you for respecting my decision. Takes an extra element of professionalism in your part.
Overall, good experience in a bad situation. They were quick and Profesional. I hadn't experienced that quick and professional treatment ever. Only reason for a 4 stars, there is always room for improvement. TV didn't work in the room....(ha ha Corey) and I wasn't pleased with the lack of treatment for future foreseeable pain and yes it cost me another doctors appointment which cost me a lot more. All though I understand with current policies.

ER/Urgent Care services are terrible.
My insurance switched and I had never been to this hospital before.
The staff is rude and doesn't seem to work together at all; they even
insisted on separating me from my kids and partner so we could be seen in different
rooms. Get out of the dark ages.
The diagnosis was simple, considering I had already gotten one at my
previous care provider, I just needed another prescription for my daughter.
They completely ignored what I was saying.
I have no idea what the hospital portion is like, but the ER is horrendous.

I had a late night visit to the emergency room. The staff I encountered that night were great. I really appreciate their help. My dissatisfaction is with the accounting and administrative services after. Most already know that medical billing is terrible in general. I think I'm at 3 companies asking for money, who knows how many more are out there. The worst of it, and the reason for the poor review, is that I updated my address and health insurance with them at the time of the visit, however they neglected to share any of that information with they myriad companies that expect money from me. UnityPoint couldn't even get it right for their own bill.

Visiting Madison and broke my arm, in person care and people were good but I was pushed out an hour or two later with no care instructions or follow up advice or directions and just a sling in lots of pain. Went to an orthopedic specialty place close to me only to find Unity can only fax my medical histories and x-rays - once requested, only sent the xrays. Spent two horrible hours sporadically on hold with their customer service line to request my history be faxed again only to be hung up on 5 TIMES. Terrible phone service, can't reach ANYONE that can help me get my own information my orthopedic doctor needs. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.

I honestly dont know why there are so many bad comments on here. I am from Pennsylvania and had a layover at the airport in madison. I am currently admitted to Meriter cause i have on going kidney issues and had a bad flare up during my lay over. I got to the ER and i waited 5 min before being triaged , and then taken right back to a room where the doctor was already there waiting for me. I was a little nervous cause of the kidney issues i have and only use to dealing with my docs in Pennsylvania. Well let me tell u the doctor and nurse im sorry i forgot there names, were amazing and made me feel really comfortable, and listend to me. My hospital at home is part of the care everywhere and so is meriter so they were able to see all my records from back home. I was admitted that night to the 9th floor where the staff is even more amazing. My first rn was Pa she is amazing and she is my nurse again. Also sandy which was my nurse this morning, and my overnight nurse which im so sorry cant remember her name but she was amazing as well. Even the techs have been amazing. My hospital back home is rated one of the top 5 in the country, and i mean this when i say it Meriter is right up there with them. I have delt with a lot of healthcare people over the last fee years with the kidney issues i have and i mean it the Meriter is right up there with the best of them.

I was born at Madison General, my mother worked at Meriter for most off my childhood. I have no idea who is running the place now but is a shell of what it once was. Patients are a burden and the doctors are clearly unhappy. It has become a joke and I now fully understand why.

Went in for knee pain, the doctor came in once. Order xrays. I didn't see him again . Medical imaging there, is a joke. 3 view xray ended up taking 4 different times because of equipment failure. Was given tylenol for pain which didn't touch the pain. Nurse comes in with crutches and knee immobilizer, doesn't explain what the xray shows. She became upset when I asked her what
the immobilizer was for. Pain was still not controled. She gave me my discharge papers and told to rest for the night and resume normal activities including work. Worst care I've ever had in my life.

I double checked with my insurance that they were covered before a Dr. appointment I was referred for and they are in network and covered, great. I then get a $500 bill for a facility fee on top of the $150 I (and my insurance) has already paid. My insurance doesn t cover facility fees. I had to call 4 times to understand what this was. Nobody ever followed up with me and when I finally got a phone call they claim that it s a legit charge and my insurance won t cover it, which is hard for me to believe since they never returned my calls and the insurance stated that it s likely that they charged it incorrectly. I don t even know what a facility fee is and it makes no sense for me to be charged something that my insurance won t pay for without being notified! I have one of the best insurance plans in country.
I would not recommend a facility that treats their patients like this.

Terrible attention from the staff that attends. In this place if they don't see that you are dying. They just don't serve you. Avian already told me about the bad service of this place but I did not believe it until today that I had to live it. Today 9/12/20 my partner has been waiting for more than 1 hour in the waiting room due to intense pain in his teeth and gums. He is the only person in the waiting room. And yet it was never called. And the Person at the reception desk and the one who takes the Information sol ol are talking to each other and laughing. And when I asked them what hours they planned to attend my partner. They just said they are very busy. And the question here is how busy if only she was in the waiting room and they were already going to meet about 2 hours after we arrived ....! Of course, they are not asked for impossible or free consultations. Why for that of the Billes if they are the Order of the day ... but the service is HUGE ...! HERE IF YOU ARE NOT DYING THE TRUTH DOES NOT ATTEND YOU ....! Who really knows about a severe toothache. You will really know what it is like to be waiting for about 2 hours without being attended ...! MERITER HOSPITAL - UNITI POINT. ZERO STARS

Emergency Room service. Pretty mixed service. Senior care really good in the ER; attention to detailed medical patient conditions not necessarily that good. Some concern over how ER treats students. For example, last year a University of Wisconsin student used ER on Friday night; sent home and told to take aspirin; returned two days later w/meningitis and died shortly thereafter.
ER technical staff under lot of pressure and apparently under resourced.

From the ER to the inpatient units this is a wonderful hospital. My child was in the NICU for 2 months and received the most competent and compassionate care. I would not hesitate to take me children back there. I myself have been seen in the ER and was a patient in IMCU. Had some amazing nurses, pharmacists, medical imaging staff and doctors.

Staff is always super friendly! From being admitted, to the infusion center, everyone is always professional and they do their job well. The food is great, and the hospital and clinics are clean. It's an amazing place to go for everything you need!

The birthing center was great, but they split services with the UW on many things and it creates COSTLY billing issues that they refuse to try and work around.

I've been to the ER and for an overnight hospital stay for both my wife and I. The doctors are good, but the real stars are the nurses--their level of caring is evident in everything they do...kudos to Meriter for finding and retaining the nurses!

I just left the ER and the reason I went was not resolved. Although the staff was friendly a rn was sent into my room and he said that he didn t want me to be labeled as in I was making the staff upset for coming twice in the last week. Instead of realizing I am in pain and I need help. Then he goes on to ask me where I live and said oh you do have a place to stay. Wow like I was homeless just coming to the ER for nothing. Then told me that the doctors in the ER don t treat long term care without either one of us knowing what is wrong with me. Then he told me I come to the ER a lot in which I have only been to the ER 3 times since last October and twice was in the pass week because of the pain and something is wrong and I m new to the area so I don t know where else to go. I took offense to the things and questions he said to me. I have never been treated like this in my life. I just left and I m headed to UW hospital and hopefully they can help.

I always thought that doctors are what make a hospital what it is. Don't get me wrong the doctors I've seen at Meriter are great, but the nurses are outstanding! I just spent 5 days there having my son, and each nurse I had was amazing. They went out of their way to make sure we were both comfortable and cared for physically, mentally, and emotionally. They managed to be professional and supportive at the same time. This is the first time I've stayed at a hospital. I was scared going in, but I know I will definitely be going back when I have any future children.

My girlfriend and I have had nothing but negative experiences with this place. we have encountered rude staff members, been kept in the ER to be told they don t know what s wrong with her, and when we called back 2 months later for the same health issues they told us a nurse would call us back within a few minutes to speak with my gf. I ve called back twice today and was told directly that a nurse would call my girlfriends phone in 3 MINUTES. It s been an hour and we still haven t heard anything. no one has actually helped us at all. I m beginning to think that this place is a joke. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because there are a few nice staff members that work there and apologized on behalf of the staff members who were rude to us.

Went with my 18 year old son to urgent care. The doctor was very condescending to me, treating me as though I was over reacting. My son ended up very sick for 3 days with high fever, vomiting and diarrhea. No doubt the norovirus. As a paying customer, I did not appreciate the high level of condescension from a health care provider. Additionally, they never submitted the claim to our insurance. Was told this happens often-scan it in but never submit!! WHAAAT?? I have continued to go round and round with them and am still waiting for payment. We will not return to this provider.

My sister went to the ER per instructions from her Primary Care Provider. She had problems breathing, pulse of between 30-40, an abnormal EKG, very worn out during brief activities and chest pain. The male ER doctor released her after several images & blood test. Horrible bedside manner saying "you are too young for heart problems" & "I don't think you are in danger of dying tonight, follow up with your dr." I drove her to UW and gave them her release papers from Meriter. Come to find out that the xrays taken at Meriter showed viral pneumonia! No mention of pneumonia to my sister or her paperwork. Rediculous that an ER dr. can't repay what the radiologist saw on x-ray. You have to wonder where some of these Drs. get their degrees?! Waste of time & money going here for ER VISITS.

They sent me to the CT area to get scanned, I got checked in with a woman at the front desk then waited an hour. After walking around the abandoned wing, I found out that the CT area closes after 5 and that I had to go to the ER. I then asked how much the CT scan would cost because it was just precautionary and no one could tell me even though I asked several times. Its my own fault that I wasn't more assertive about the price because I wouldn't of gotten the scan if they would have been upfront about the price. So, if you want to be forgotten about in a wing of a hospital and not be given an estimate of your bill, this is the place for you.

Meriter Hospital, 1/2/16
Meriter Hospital, 1/2/16
Over recent years I have had many physical therapist through the Meriter system, as my
Physician Plus insurance has total coverage. In so being, I have never had any coinsurance, co-payment,
or any additional payments for materials used during these therapies.
When I received a Meriter bill for a 6/10/15 P.T. visit, I called the Madison office to question this billing.
They had no record of a co-payment nor what the item was being bill for, nor did the Monona therapy office that I attended. Physicians Plus had no real information either, other than it was listed as coinsurance, in which I do not have, so the concession was that it must be a tangible item given to me.
My P.T visits were consistent, with the usual tapes, bandages, and/or bio freeze products, so I had know idea what could possibly billable.
The previous contact to Meriter back in August 2015 proved to have no merit to its billing practice for a coinsurance in which I thought the Madison staff had taken care of this issue, as I heard nothing further.
Then after receiving another bill 12/21/15, I realized that this was not handle by the Meriter billing staffer I had spoken to on the matter.
So on 12/28/15 I made the same regiment of calls, getting the same answers, as to no one knowing what this item was that I was being billed for. When call the Monona p.t. office, the new staff there was a bit more helpful than the previous contact, as staff returned my call promptly with an answer.
The item she shows in the records was a splint, made of gauze and wax. Oh yes this is a tangible item if you want to call it that, but it is also comparable to the tape that has been used. Also known as supplies.
So I called Meriter billing to question this material supply, as a billable tangible item. I was told, that it was of course, and the tape that is being used, is also. She said the tape, is within the bill, to the insurance company.
So here it is, materials being billed to the insured, as a coinsurance, without informing the customer that this falls outside of their insurance, and is a poor business practice by Meriter. In addition, the billing department does not have detailed information, as to what is being billed, which falls within this same continuum.
Please be advised that the coinsurance payment enclosed, as it is stated in your records,
is a reflection of Meriter Hospitals gouging its customers.
As my P.T. continues today, it does so outside of the Meriter system.

I was forced to take genetic counseling which costs $380 ONLY FOR 30 MINS which really was not worth. Seems this overpriced counseling is required to take NIPT at this hospital, which I hear from others not necessary at all or not at this ridiculous price. Before I took it they said my insurance will cover as it was medically necessary but it wasn't so I kept receiving the bills. I kept calling bill department, the related offices, but not helpful, even was hung up during the wait. Definitely the worst medical experience I've encountered. Heads-up for those who are to take genetic counseling here for the price.
To make up that horrible experience with the prenatal visit, Meriter birthing center experience was wonderful. Staffs were nice, food was decent. That's the only reason this review gets 3 stars instead of 1.

Was treated poorly by the staff and DR in the ER. Nurses were rude and the DR made excuses for why she wouldnt do anything. My DR told me to go to the ER because of the concern he had of my symptoms. ER staff didn't care. First time I have been treated this poorly. ER level of care has dropped severely.

Dramatically exceeded my expectations! My mother had heart surgery. Nurses were super and the staff in general were extremely friendly and accommodating. I haven't been to a hospital in years and did not expect such terrific visitor treatment. They really go the extra mile every day. Moreover, the food is better than most restaurants.

My wife was induced for labor on a Tuesday and we left the hospital on a Friday with our baby. We were both very impressed with all of the nurses and doctors in the birthing center as well as the family care center. I was so happy with how well everybody treated us in the hours leading up to the birth. I was nervous about the birth/active labor but everybody was very genuine, and I recall them checking on me (dad) to make sure I was doing OK throughout the process as well. They let me be very involved and guided me on how to help. We couldn't have been happier with the pediatrician, who was very reassuring with all of our questions/concerns, and for that reason we left feeling confident. My wife's only complaint was any needle work... initial blood draw had bruising/swelling, IV insertion required multiple attempts, epidural required multiple attempts.

I have never been to Meriter before and I can sadly say that I will never return. I work in the healthcare industry and was having crippling pains when I decided I must seek help and go somewhere where I could see an OB quickly. I was seen by an ER Physician, who had no clue what was happening and was very far from diagnosing my condition. Since it was an OB issue I chose Meriter as I was sure I could see an OB to review my case (I had called my OB who had no opening for over two weeks and I needed emergency help). Instead, I was tested for STDs (been monogamous with my husband) and was told that I should call the residency clinic down the road to be seen by a resident OB and sent on my way. The OB Clinic was not able to get me in that week when I was assured it would be the next couple days by the ER physician.
I now can view my claim for $2400! $400 of which is for STD testing, not even remotely was the cause. I see patients all day long and will tell everyone I see not to go to Meriter as you will not receive the help you need and will most likely not see any specialist. And you will get charged for tests that do not apply to you. I can see why Meriter has now had to Merge with UW and why the cost of healthcare is so astronomical in this country.

I had my oldest child and my youngest child at Meriter and would do it all again. They offer specializations which do not even exist at St Mary's and UW doesn't deliver babies. There were some very specific circumstances with my youngest and it was a similar situations with my 3 year old, who was born at St Mary's. The experiences were night and day. I left St Mary's traumatized and combative about everything the doctors and nurses said and did. It left me afraid of going to other doctors. Where as Meriter was a generally warm place, with helpful and kind staff 90-95% of the time. Both my 3 yr old and my youngest spent time in the NICU and while St Mary's says they have private rooms and you're welcome to stay with your baby, if you tell them you want to they look at you like you've grown a 2nd head. Not to mention they have no place for you to sleep or shower and not even the basics of some type of food. I understand the baby is the patient but what mother wants to leave her newborn? Meriter at least provide some very simple food items, you couldn't live off of it but it was nice to be able to grab a quick snack while you waited for family to bring food. They had a communal shower which they regularly maintenances and would happily bring you towels if you needed them. They also had pull out couches and in the one room they didn't have a pull out couch (which my baby happened to be in) they made a cot available. The doctors were much more forthcoming with treatment details and you saw them regularly. I can't say enough about the nurses, they work so hard and are almost all amazing people with beautiful personalities. I would not hesitate to go to Meriter again and will NEVER have another baby at St Mary's.

The fact that this hospital has 3.1 stars is absurd. My wife and I are from Iowa and were on our "babymoon" when she started having contractions at 31 weeks. We selected this hospital because it was covered by our insurance.
This nursing staff was beyond amazing, we have been here for two days at the time of this review. The nurses are incredibly personable and check in on time and relay information effectively. Talking with other people in the antepartum unit, they also have the same to say of nurses.
The doctors take the time to answer questions and make sure you are informed about what is happening. We had two doctors and a resident caring for my wife. They explain that every morning they have group meetings and confer with other doctors about their patients. So in essence, there are between 8-10 doctors that review each patient.
I cannot speak to the other departments of this hospital, but if you are in need of birthing care, you would be hard-pressed to find a better healthcare provider. My wife and I are beyond thankful for the professionals at Meriter Hospital!

My husband was in for Surgery this week. I was truly impressed with the staff and facility. Our Pre-Op nurse, Jessica, was very knowledgeable and placed the IV in such a way it wouldn't inhibit him moving his arm around. All of our RN's and CNA's were so very sweet and helpful. I did want to give a special shout out to our RN, Pheng, on our discharge day. She was so helpful and did a fantastic job educating my husband and I on how to take care of him after surgery. Everyone was exceptionally courteous and helpful, but Pheng stood out. Thank you so much to everyone for making this stressful situation as easy as it could be.

We encountered nothing but wonderful staff from, the moment we pulled in. From the valet guy, receptionist in surgery, every single nurse and doctor throughout the surgical process to the cafeteria workers all were super pleasant and informative. We never felt overwhelmed or undereducated. As a UW patient I definitely applaud what Meriter is doing.

DO NOT GO HERE!!! What ever you do! I went there years ago only once for stitches. Today I get a notice in the mail that they got a scam email and their entire data base was hack. Now my information, and everyone else's who has ever gone there, is out there ready to be stolen, if not already stolen. I cant believe the straight up neglect for safety of information and the flat out stupidity of it. Do not go!
