The front desk staff are very polite and helpful, and as far as a base from which to explore Staffordshire goes, it's great. However.. that's it. The room I had was dirty, the cupboard broken, the toilet leaking, bathroom just unclean... Really not a great experience.

The receptionist needs a medal, think she was busy setting up breakfast while checking people into the hotel.

Room was nice, but dirty cobwebs literally every nook and cranny.

Didnt stay for breakfast as I had to leave early for a meeting but heard its not to be missed.

The owner could do alot more than he is at the moment, possibly sitting on a goldmine!

Stayed here whilst working between Birmingham and Manchester and like it.
Had a bit of a rustic feel being an old building, some creaking floor boards adding to the character.
Breakfast was nice and the staff all very pleasant and helpful.
My only real complaints would be that the outer door was locked upon arrival, in fairness it was gone midnight however in the rain, there was no cover to use while waiting for the night porter to arrive and open up, and the bathroom in particular but also some other areas were looking a bit dated, even for this type of property.
I would definitely stay again.

Clean room, problems with shower trying to get temperature right as run from taps, freezing one moment and scalding the next. Light switch playing up works then not. Reported to customer service desk as electrical issue. For some reason only leaving rooms with one large towel and 2 guest towels. Hard to get shower when 2 adults in room. Had to ask for more towels.

I stayed on Saturday night, I was traveling through work, room was very dated, pillows very flat otherwise ok, shower only ran hot for about 15 seconds then went cold, breakfast was a farce, I went into reception area early as I was hoping to be our quickly to go to work, the lady on reception went to see if I could start earlier than the 7-30 but I was told they weren't ready yet but I could help myself to continental while I waited, cereal, yoghurt and a banana was my choice, the lady then came back to say they still weren't ready but I can have toast, I accepted as time was getting on, then around 7-40 the lady returned to say she wasn't going to lie anymore and that the chef hadn't even turned up. I left for work hungry and disheartened.

Just enjoyed a beautiful Afternoon Tea. A Groupon Offer but from the initial booking to the afternoon tea and staff we were treated like Royalty. Lots of lovely fresh sandwiches, old fashioned cake and plenty of tea. The dining room is comfortable in a lovely old building. Well worth going.

Okay is about the best I can say, they made a mess of my booking and the rooms and facilities are looking tired an run down. Staff were fairly friendly. I got served instant coffee in a cafetiere at breakfast which kind of sums the place up.

Good overnight stay. Would recommend asking for a room at the front of the hotel. Breakfast was good. Amenities OK, not 5 start purely because if the showers using an outdated system that couldn't balance the temperature.

Located just outside of Penkridge the hotel is easy to get to by road and also has a railway station next door. Rooms are comfortable and the restaurant also caters for vegetarians to a limited extent. Reasonable range of beers available at the bar. Staff are friendly.

Superb food, book half board, a bargain for gourmet cuisine and big portions too - rooms a little tired but comfortable beds and big screen TV, staff extremely helpful, health centre attached to properly, ample, free parking, close to a sleepily little rail station which adds to the convenience of its location.

Very poor example of the Mercure brand. Tired building and surroundings, tired staff, tired bathrooms and a less than average breakfast. Pool out of use and no discount/alternative offered, though upon visiting the leisure club the lack of a pool was the least of concerns. Smelly tired club with mixed brand equipment collected over the years and worn out, a depressing hole to be honest. Breakfast service very poor and lazy, no direction just assumption and a blatent lie when ordering from the non buffet menu "it's all up there" (gesturing towards the buffet). No, you lazy cow, poached eggs are not there.

Clearly the main client base and sales pitch has been towards travelling builders/labourers resulting in a cut price, scummy version of what should be. It's not cheap enough however to pass as a Travelodge etc so make your minds up Mercure, either charge more for quality guests and treat them right or charge less and quality guests will know to go elsewhere not be fooled into thinking it's a good hotel... because it's not. Pull your socks up, clean up and try harder.. very disappointed.

Good pionts... night porter very attentive to my colleague. Hot water in good supply and good pressure. Thats about it.

I highly recommend avoiding this hotel. Aside from the lack of up to date decor and general standard of the interior in the public areas, the service is not the best. There is a gym on site which is reasonably well equipped. The hotel is close to the railway line.
If you do stay here watch out for the car park which Is unforgiving and you are likely to get fined by parking eye for driving nearby let alone staying as a guest at which point the hotel will not help.

Felt like I was staying in a morgue. Booked up to stay in an bridal suite, was leaking from the ceiling. Buckets all around corridors. Wet leaks all up the walls, smells like damp. Very terrible. Do not waste your money. It really is hotel from hell. Also staff haven't got a clue in there job role/title.

I've been here a few times. Used to be really good however this weekend was atrocious. Presumably the duty manager was on reception and ignored myself and my sister (who was the guest not me).she'd travelled 7 hrs and was tired and need to get booked in. We definitely were an inconvenience to this members of staff. Trouble with door fobs 3 times to get it to work. Dirty restaurant and the whole entrance is dirty . I suggest hospitality training for this manager. Sorry.

The room was nice however the bar area was dirty. Beer flies everywhere. Even one of the beers tasted a bit off. Like they needed to clean their lines more often. The food served in the bar/lounge area was shocking. I wouldn't normally expect a restaurant to use a frozen pizza base and simply add fresh toppings.

Quiet hotel, a bit out of the way. Room was OK but not quite as clean as you may want it. The bathroom was below par.
The main issue was with the restaurant. No meals served until 7.00pm. by 6.50pm there were 14 people waiting to get some food. Two waitresses stood around doing nothing but we weren't allowed in till 7.00pm.
Cutlery was dirty, my fork was encrusted with something, uegh!
Each time the check had a meal ready he had to shout onto the floor, rather than ring a bell.

Breakfast needed a toasting machine as you had to ask for it to be specially made, yawn.
Won't be coming back here I'm afraid.

The hotel is poor and run down major issues with hot water coming through the cold taps.
Service was poor all meals ordered came wrong.
A refurbishment is in progress but need to get a move on if I was to think of returning.

Stayed for two nights, Penkridge is a lovely village. We had a great time in the area but hotel was at best average. It's the little things that matter . . . like a comfortable pillow (they could learn a lot from Premium Inn's choice of pillows), I have never had such thin pillows even when given a third one they were only the thickness of one proper pillow.
Why is it so difficult to serve hot toast . . . both mornings I specifically asked for hot toast and was served cold toast which I didn't eat.
The bathroom in our room was well overdue bring updated. The radiator didn't work, the shower screen was mouldy, rusty and leaked!! When I pointed out these problems I was told so grudgingly that we could be moved that I was made to feel that I would be making a fuss if I asked for this.
When we checked out, I had to wait for at least 10 minutes at reception with no way of letting anyone know that I was there. The telephone rang 4 times in that time, ignored!
I would not recommend this hotel.

Absolutely rubbish hotel I would not recommend.

Absolutely rubbish hotel I would not recommend.
This is the 2nd time I've stayed and the 2nd time they've had no booking on the system even though I have a booking form!
I booked the hotel to host a workshop you'd think they didn't want the business as took days to finalise with the lady you need to speak to not being in!!! How do they function! After waiting for 20mins to check in after having no booking only to be found at the last minute 20 mins later, I went down to the bar to order a drink and some food as no phone in the room, even though they say they offer room service. An hour later no sign of the food so I rang from my mobile to be told there was a meal before mine then I was getting my order this is now nearly 9pm, no offer of that's on us for your wait and only a we are really busy excuse given so food duly cancelled!
Room itself is really old along with the bathroom, if I could have stayed in a caravan I'd have been over joyed rubbish rubbish rubbish on all counts !

Not a Mercure Hotel anyway for a start. Pool has been closed for around 2 years, it doesn't mention that on the hotel site. Arrived yesterday to stay ready for work today. Asked about food and told oh the kitchen is closed tonight. You can walk into town though if you like. The place looks derelict and needs a damn good clean and refurbishment. I don't think I'll be staying again until it is sorted out.

Driving though Penkridge turn down the by Sainsburys and then it's on the left just after the railway bridge. When you arrive it looks a little forlorn. I loved the ladies parking right next to the main entrance. The receptionist Magdalena was really welcoming and helped me carry my luggage up to the refurbished rooms up on the 3rd floor. The room was huge with a nice king-sized bed and the best pillows. House keeping let the room down with hairs in the bath. The shower screen seal needed to be replaced. The finish in the bathroom is not fantastic.
But for the money this is fantastic value and I had a great night's sleep. As its away from the main road I was not woken up by traffic.

Health Hazards and deceit at the Mercure Hatherton...

Health Hazards and deceit at the Mercure Hatherton House Hotel
My wife, my sister and I attended the funeral of a close relation in Penkridge during July 2018, and we chose to stay at the Mercure Hatherton House Hotel, we are all in our mid-seventies
During the course of our stay we experienced an incident with a very ill-tempered member of staff called Sharon Wright.
Shortly after arriving in the hotel, my sister who was staying in her own room came to our room and told me that there was a soiled bath towel thrown in the back of her wardrobe. I went to her room and examined the towel which clearly had been used by somebody before her. I advised her to report it to reception as soon as possible as I perceived it to be a health hazard.
The following morning my sister told me that the towel was still in the wardrobe. I accompanied my sister to reception and we met with Sharon Wright and asked if the towel could be removed. She informed me that the reason it had not been removed was that it had been left there in order that the cleaning staff could remove it on the following day.
I found this reason to be unreasonable as it was clearly a health hazard for my sister who is in poor health. When I pointed this out to Ms. Wright she became agitated and antagonistic and as we were leaving to attend the funeral I made a decision to let it drop.
When we arrived back in the hotel Ms. Wright was waiting for me by the door and immediately went on the offensive with me. She stopped me passing by and informed me in front of a number of guests in reception that she had examined the towel and claimed that it was not soiled but a clean towel that had been placed into the wardrobe as a spare.
Once again she became belligerent and she impressed upon me how important it was for me to examine the towel that she had removed from my sister s room. In an attempt to appease her anger I went with her behind the desk where she produced a perfectly clean and freshly pressed bath towel.
This was clearly not the same towel that I had seen in my sister s room, but I did not put up an argument and because of her confrontational manner, I resolved to write to the management about the incident when we returned home.
I only later found out that earlier she had approached my sister as she entered the hotel and confronted her in the same manner.
We were very unhappy throughout our stay at the Mercure Hatherton House Hotel and made to feel like second class citizens. We certainly were not made to feel welcome.
When I returned home I contacted customer services at Accor Hotels who, after contacting the hotel, initially agreed that we had cause for complaint. They later told me that they did not own the Mercure Hatherton House Hotel, but were only marketing it through their Accor Hotel chain therefore; they were unable to resolve my complaint.
This revelation came as a surprise to me, I believed that we were booking into a hotel owned and managed by the Accor Hotel Group. I consider that most people who book accommodation with Accor Hotels do so assuming that they have the backing of the world s largest chain of hotels.
We will not stay in an Accor Hotel again despite having done so many times in the past in many countries; neither would I recommend the chain to anyone else.

Visited for an afternoon tea with my wife and son. Service was top notch with a very attentive young lady looking after us and the food was good considering the price we paid via Groupon. Unfortunately the venue is a little shabby with workmen passing by as we ate, loads of bulbs requiring replacement and the building and carpark appearing scruffy.
