Horrible place--I went there with my friend for swimming lessons and after going there for a while, unfortunately my friend got head lice. We couldn't step in there anymore. And they couldnt even teach me how to swim. I really dis-like this place. I don't recommend this to anyone.

This Y is fine. The lap pool is actually pretty nice. The therapy pool is okay, too, but it fills up quickly during their limited open/family swim hours, and you have to wait outside the pool to go in if they are at capacity.

They also appear pretty understaffed. The front desk staff almost never answer the phone, and when they do, they have trouble answering basic questions (e.g., do I have to sign up for group fitness classes or can I just walk in? ).

Most of the lifeguards seem miserable, which makes for an awkward experience, especially in the therapy pool when kids are around. I have recently seen the lifeguards snap at patrons in a very unprofessional manner.

Parking is limited and you need a YMCA parking pass, or risk getting towed.

Overall, I give it 3 stars for decent facilities, though the women s locker room could use a facelift. -2 stars for spotty customer service and employees who appear to hate their jobs.

This place was working out until I picked up deadlifting. Starting to feel like planet fitness. I don't want to be told to put down the weight slowly. Which I wasn't just dropping, I was just doing regular deadlifts with good form and pace. You put down 350+ lbs it's going to make noise. I'm now shopping for a new place. I question the wisdom of putting the weight room on the second floor anyway if you're worried about the offices on the second floor.

I rarely post reviews however calling to ask basic information regarding membership led to the front desk staff sounding disinterested and agitated. To put me on hold only to pick up and hang up and when I called back claim she never hung up on me ( once again in a agitated voice and telling me to look online.)

I work for a gym as a manager so to see the level of customer service was extremely frustrating especially since it cost this YMCA a membership.

Train your staff better if I was a mystery shopper your score would be extremely concerning.

Highly understaffed. Front desk persons are rude and they don't have time to explain anything. No one respond to emails. If I get response on email, probably I will save time to your front desk staffs. No one has time to show the different facilities they have. I have hard time to get into time table and facilities. For anything you go, you have to wait 30 minutes as your front desk is very busy in talking on phone and you have to stand in queue. Bath rooms are not cleaned for ages. For families, nothing. There is no open pool frequencies. My kids are waiting when my time match with open swim time. I will cancel this membership. Not a value for money

It always depresses me because I feel like this Y has so much potential to be better than just a drool bucket for youth. It could tie in the whole community but it instead neglects anyone that would actually pay the full membership price.

The aquatics area is amazing but is poorly managed. Yes, I get all Ys give the space to kids program in the kids but the open lanes could be better separated based on swimming pace like the Wang and north suburban Y. Second, I should not see hairballs the size of cats floating around. If I film what I see when I'm swimming, some of you would vomit so I just keep my goggles fogged up. Seriously, how hard is it to enforce a swim cap rule? Also, if you only have 2 people in the open adult swim, do you really need to close 2 lanes off for it where there's 3-4 adults in each continuous swim lane?

classes, besides the fact that they are limited basically don't have the equip or room for it. And forget about the cooling system in the spin room. They use basically the equivalent of a desk fan to cool of the spin room. It gets so hot, they keep the door open.

Women's locker room. There's a steam shower and a sauna which are really nice perks, except for the fact that you can't shower without crap dripping on your from the ceilings. Because of the size, or draining issue the floor of the women's locker room is basically always covered in water.

If you can close your eyes to all the sanitary issues, maybe it's tolerable.

Sadly, if you want pool access you're only other hope is BSC or driving somewhere Far, so Malden Y, I must put up with you, but I don't like you.

As for the equipment or anything else, I can't tell you much. I never use it since I prefer the Wang Y equipment over it.

I made a few complain to the front desk and they emailed their superior and I never got a response back, very unprofessional, the facility is very badly clean with dust all over window seals, ventilation pipes full of dust falling on people's head, the heat is always off between the locker room and the pool and jacuzzi area, freezing specially in the winter I think is a crowd control technic since they have a open bar when it comes to new members,no control on how many membership they welcome on board and not caring about quality service, family plan is a joke never opening for nothing all full as a result my daughter only uses the pool whenever she can because the limit are 50 people and always full at its max or the rest have to go home,a little bit unsanitary too because they don't enforce the simple rule of showers first, and the showers don't have any soap or shampoo where people shower before pool, anyways I hope the administration reads this post and do something about instead of just collecting money from our banking account.

I was a member of Ymca malden before. They used to have nice staffs. I cancelled the membership 3 months ago and I went to join back again yesterday. The name of the receptionist was Hayat. She was very unprofessional. She did not explain anything I asked to her. In the mean time she also had argument with another client. She processed my payment for my membership but then I told her I want to apply for scholarship. She got very angry and screamed at me saying that I have messed up the whole thing and she needs to pay $100 out of her pocket to the payment office then. She was also very rude when I asked her if I was done. She told me "what do you need now? you messed up the whole thing." I will never be a member of this YMCA in my life because of how I and another customers were treated yesterday.

This is probably the worst place to play basketball. They constantly close the gym for less than 10 little kids to play. They run programs in the gym all day long and leaves the paying members out.

The people running the pool are not letting some people go into the pool because they are saying the max compacity is 50 people and there is 6 lifegaurds at the pool and the cleaning is very poor and there is no manager on duty I hope you change all of this so the ymca can be good for people to come and buy memberships

I wish I didn t have to give this place any stars. The facility feels pretty run down and it always smells. Pretty rude and immature people as well. You d be better off making the trip to another Y or going to LA Fitness/another gym. You cannot picture a gym more worse. Save yourself some peace of mind and don t go here.

The swimming lessons are not recommended as the staff is not nice. The swim team is a better choice.
I strongly recommend the guitar lessons where teacher Devin Ulibarri teaches guitar for beginners very well and advanced students

The guy that works at night is horrible and very rude. Many times when you need help he is not there and is outside talking to his buddies. When he comes back he acts like he is being bothered by your requests.

He seems miserable at his job and doesn't want to be there.

This Y is simply amazing. The staff are friendly, it's clean, everything works and it has everything I could hope for. They have a vast array of cardio equipment and not one of them is squeaking or squealing like Planet Fitness where I used to go. I like their lateral, elliptical, rowing, and newest treadmill. I do some light weight lifting and they got more than enough weight machines. I love how they're all close to each other so I can hop from machine to machine in a 60-90 minutes workout and get a solid variety circuit training.

Their whirlpool is my special treat and the steam room on occasion. I have just one complaint which is that their therapy pool which really is the only thing my 7 years old son can use is always booked up with something. The open swim hour is generally open once a day for just one hour and generally at unusual hours. I try to take my son at least once a week but anymore than that I have to really go out of my way with scheduling.

I enjoy their basketball court once in awhile as well but it's always too crowded. Overall it's a bit pricey for the family plan but the place is amazing and totally worth it.

I like this Y and my 4 yo daughter loves it. She just finished their summer camp that she was very happy with. The got excellent cardio and a weight room. It can be crowded at times but that is expected from a popular facility in a middle of a busy city.

2018 Update:

2018 Update:

Better pool hours now. Staff have been professional and kind on the occasions we've visited this year. The Melrose YMCA is still much better for swimming with your toddlers, and there's still not much in unstructured (no extra cost) play options for toddlers outside of the pool. Upgrade from one star in 2017 to 3 in 2018.

2017 review:

The schedule and policies are clear: families with young children are unwelcome.

Say you have a two-year-old that you want to spend time with at the Y. There are two places the kid can play: absurdly, the basketball courts (so safe!) and the swimming pool. The pool has one hour a day when the kid can swim with a parent (they also have lessons, for extra $$ of course, and that's not parent-kid time).

During the week, that one hour is during the workday.

On the weekend, the hour is limited to 50 people at a time, including the adults. The 51st gets to wait... while watching the other kids play. Right. No indication of its being full before you change. There is another pool next door, but the lifeguards are not empowered to open it to those under 18 for overflow.

But say you do want to wait, and take your kid somewhere a little more friendly than explicitly watching others play when they can't? They have a daycare room where one can leave children and go for a workout. Parents are permitted to stay with their child there for 15 minutes, which should leave young children perfectly comfortable the first time, shouldn't it? It has limited hours anyway, and in this case it wasn't even open at the time that we would have needed to wait. Could they open it so a parent could play in the play room with their child, fully supervising them while no one else is using the room? No, the room could only be used by the daycare staff for the daycare during its hours.

With just two hours that we can potentially use the entire Y as a family, and those two hours being unreliable, the policies inflexible, it was simply not worth it.

I've been a member here for several years and would say its a welcoming and diverse place with bodies young and old and there is a spectrum of cultures.

The locker room can get very humid and the building's age shows here more than other places. On the bright side it does have a sauna and steam room split by gender which is awesome. It's true that the floor is often wet from other people dripping after using the pool, and I've seen a few patrons using cell phone cameras or parents with kids on the adult side. I've never had trouble getting a day locker.

There are a few types of pools and the lanes aren't too crowded, but it is not the cleanest. I've gone to a few classes and spin with Brad and Zumba on Friday nights are both popular and good workouts. The weight section is the best, lots of benches/squat racks/mirrors/functional lifting such as sandbags/grip builders/tires etc., but that means it can feel like a male dominated space. The ab mat section was replaced with a horrible material, but that mistake was quickly corrected.

My biggest concern is the wifi. The connection is so spotty its difficult to listen to music when working out--and you can forget about streaming a favorite show during cardio. In the past month, a senior member of the staff decided they wouldn't support it at all and turned the service off (see photo). This seems like a basic gym amenity to me and I could see the parents waiting to pick up their kids from swimming or basketball having issues with this as well.

There is a fairly high staff turnover and some of them do rush you out of the building at closing time. Meanwhile they could be more assertive kicking kids off of cardio/weight equipment. Hours on Sunday often feel tight with the early closing at 6pm. Parking in the winter can be more challenging, especially with the new resolution folks coming in and the spots lost to snow.

It also drives me a little nuts that holiday hours are only posted with physical signs at the gym (not on the website or via e-mail) and snow closings require you calling to ask.

I was floored by the lack of interest the front desk has in their customers. I went in to ask questions and grab forms about their summer program for kids and the man at the front desk was eating a sandwich very sloppy, wiping his mouth with his arm and then on his shirt. He never once smiled, only looked bothered by myself and another customer standing there. He never responded to any of my questions, just pointed in a general direction of a wall to where some papers were, meaning there is the form. I had questions about the form so I called later that day to get no response back to the voicemail I left. How am I supposed to trust them with my own children when they have lack of courtesy and respect for the adults.. My brother, an adult, and niece though who is 10, goes there though and loves the Zuma class.

The only benefits the Y's weight room has are free weights and ergometers. Has very few machines that are very worn. Super crowded during peak hours paired with loud, obnoxious children from afterschool programs.

If you're looking to lift without free weights, Planet Fitness is better.

Gives me good times. A old man yelled at me 2 years ago for being too young to use the treadmills and bullied me. The basketball teachers were fun but they duck taped our pockets when we ever put our hands in there. The swimming teacher was fun as she questioned too much about what games I played and I acted more superior than what I really was. The karate teacher was fun and I was a testing dummy when I was the only boy in the room since the teacher did not want to hurt girls but I am sad that there is no more karate teacher since he left when he had a child.
