Love this place! The staff is great and the area is amazing! Very historic and well known place. Martha Mary chapel and the grist mill are also notable. Been in movies and George Washington once walked by this place ( love that sign... Don't think he stayed, just walked by it )

This is a very traditional restaurant. The food is traditional - not outstanding - traditional. I had Indian Pudding for dessert that took me back 40 years to a my school cafeteria. You just can't find that kind of thing every day. My mother and father used to go great when they were first married 60 years ago. In short, the Wayside Inn is an authentic historic Boston experience in just about every way you can imagine including the food. I hope it is here forever.
The Wayside Inn transcends time. For anything in the USA that stands and operates demands our attention, support and a visit. Do not expect a visit of our time. Expect to wait, reflect and enjoy something that is authentic and real and does not expect an entry fee. You need this ride!
Amazing colonial ambiance in 300 year old inn. Yankee food: chowder, scrod, roasts, Turkey, squash, delmonico potatoes. Great stuff! On a beautiful park with old mill, chapel, pond on grounds.
Very interesting, historic venue. Service was marvelous and food sublime. Wedding service in Mary Martha chapel was fun. The reception venue was another matter all together. They use a large tent near the inn. Generally this would be fine, but.... In the heat of 90-100 degrees they were woefully unprepared. Four or five big fans were almost useless. Fortunately, the crowd came to party so it was ok. They need to plan for this type of issue and have air conditioning in the tent. It's going to happen again, as it's summer.
Historic Inn. Visited the restaurant, now seating indoors again. Also has outdoor seating and pick up. Does a prix fixe menu on Sundays as well as regular a la carte menu. We ordered the calamari app, which was really good. Lots of cherry peppers and crisp calamari with a dipping sauce, and bacon wrapped scallops with a really good mustard sauce. The bacon was crisp and the scallops weren't rubbery. So far great. Our waitress disappeared and we had to ask someone else for help. Ordered the Wayside Ale which a very tasty pale draught. The entree we ordered was the Innkeeper cut prime rib with whipped potato and I got green beans my companion got squash. We requested a bread bowl, and the waitress again disappeared. We flagged down other staff who got us rolls and butter and brought a pepper mill for the potatos, and the rolls. Had another glass of ale and some water. Food was really good. While our waitress may have been at the end of her shift, or had a reason for lackluster service, the other staff that we flagged down was very pleasant and helpful. If you have never been, it really is worth a visit. The main room has a fireplace and being seated near it has long been considered desirable. There is a small room in the front with a nice pub bar and a room across from it perfect for a private birthday or anniversary party. There are handsone grounds to wander before or after dinner and a picturesque grist mill and a chapel on the grounds.
The food and service are always excellent...but what makes this place amazing is the atmosphere when dining in one of the original inn rooms. Dining in the new section loses all the atmosphere and wouldn't be worth it for me.
An exceptional dining experience from the food to the wait staff to the atmosphere. I would absolutely recommend this establishment to anyone, but especially to those who admire seeing a fantastically preserved historic landmark.
Great place, great menu, great memories. The waitstaff are wonderful, kind, and most of all know their menu. The family style dinners are moderately$$. I can't wait to go again. Go enjoy your dinner and don't worry about the bill ur memories are worth it..
Very good food. This is a nice setting with historic signifance. Parking lot is good size but can be inconvenient if you have difficulty walking. The menu is varied with a nice variety of choices. I have always enjoyed my visits and would recommend it.
Took a friend from out of state here. We had the "Nantucket Special" - delicious! A basket of wonderful assorted rolls was placed on our table. My friend was impressed to learn they were made from flour from Henry Ford's Grist mill down the street. She loved the homey, historical surroundings and attentive service. A memorable lunch!
We have been long time visitors to the Wayside Inn (we were married in the chapel up the street and had our wedding rehearsal dinner there etc) and loved it. We still enjoy the appearance and the history of it. The bar is cozy and a perfect place to sit by the fire on a cold day and get a drink. But the restaurant is a very different story. It seems that they are never fully staffed. It was like our waiter was invisible the entire day. We were seated and there was a noticeable delay until he came with menus and took our drink order. When he finally returned with the drinks, he apologized for the wait, took our lunch order and again disappeared. After another considerable wait he appeared again with the appetizers and apologized for the wait, refilled our water glasses and "poof" gone again. When he brought our lunch, yet a third apology. My wife got a salad with no dressing. Our attempts to flag anyone down to assist us were in vain until my wife said, "forget it". We were long finished and I saw our waiter, I made the universal sign of "bring us our check" and he approached saying, "yea, yea, yea, I'm coming".. He never asked if we wanted dessert, which was fine because we had already agreed it would be nice but too much of a hassle and figured we could get it elsewhere. This was our first time back after several years. We had a similar experience the last time for a family gathering and dinner there. Sadly, it was the same this time also. My advice is stop in for the atmosphere, have a drink by the fire, but then dine somewhere else.
Wayside Inn is such a beautiful place. We stopped at the school house, walked around the Grist Mill and finished up with a great meal at the Inn. Only a 4 star rating today because the Grist Mill was closed. Lady at the gift shop hinted that they had no one to cover it today.
My wife and I stayed at the Wayside Inn for a last minute little getaway to Carmel. It was super cute and fit our needs perfectly. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We had a fireplace in our room and enjoyed relaxing in front of it during the chilly evening. The location of the inn is in the downtown area and less than a mile to the beach. There are plenty of restaurants, shopping and wine tasting within walking distance. We loved our stay at the Wayside Inn and will absolutely be back in the near future.
Good Food. Stuffed Shrimp done perfectly. A great place to see how people lived in an Inn years ago. A beautiful Historic Inn. Visit the Little Red School House and the Mill on the property. The Martha Mary Chapel is beautiful also.
During restaurant closures due to COVID-19 Longfellow's Wayside Inn IS offering a to-go menu. Check wayside.org for the to-go menu and ordering instructions.
This place is just awesome. It has the old character and charm one would expect for a 300 + year old restaurant and hotel. You should not miss this one! Food and service were exceptional. Definitely worth the drive to get there.
Great charm, history, food, & drinks. Delicious Yankee classics! This is a New England & American crown jewel! Property is excellent for exploring & sightseeing & outside grounds are dog friendly. Truly our top special event go-to!
It's like having a dinner in a museum. Old charm with speakers built into the wall and modern plumbing. The Coow Woow is very strong. The Holiday Goose was delicious. We had a private room for our family that was perfect. I'm looking forward to trying it again and checking out more of the history..
Beautiful home from 18th century with plenty of historical vignettes. The food served for their Mother's day buffet was amazing. Items like Prime Rib and seafood Newburg chock full of lobsters!
The food and service at the Wayside Inn was exceptional. The food is fresh and of the highest quality. The portions and prices are reasonable. It is clear that the food is freshly made. The chowder is some of the best I have had and the deserts are worth the try. The Baked Indian Pudding is amazing . Whether for a night out, or a special occasion, the Wayside Inn is well worth visiting.
Great food, quiet and elegant dining room, and an occasional fife and drum band. Reasonable prices in a historic country setting. What more can you ask for.
42 years ago we spent our honeymoon here. We loved the ambience of the 1700's. We stayed overnight on Wednesday. Dinner was good. A fife and drum toured the many dining rooms in the restaurant.
My Red Hat friends and I, about 10 of us, have made it a yearly event to have lunch at the Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury. We make the trip up from Lakeville, MA to go apple picking in Stow Ma and go to lunch from there. The food tastes homemade. I've had the pot roast and it was delicious. The chicken pie was a big hit. We are all very fussy about where we eat, the quality of the food and the service and ambiance. The Wayside Inn deserves a 5-star rating. We are looking forward to eating there again next month and I'm sure we will not be disappointed.
My aunt and Uncle had their wedding here on 28 October, and to say it was a disaster would be an understatement. First, they made the wedding on Sunday only because there were supposed to be revolutionary war reenactments all day Saturday - and since it rained Saturday, the wayside decided to reschedule the re-enactment event to Sunday. There were tons of reenactors all over, and all you could hear during their vows was gun fires, drums, and flutes outside and it was awkward. There was also a fiasco with the tables - the bride was under the impression that the space could fit 8 tables, and then a couple days in advance they said no only 6, so she had to do damage control and move it to two long tables last minute.
But then when we thought things could get worse, in the middle of the ceremony the power went out! It got dark and then during cocktail hour the bartenders said they couldn t serve us drinks without power due to Massachusetts state law (we looked this up later, couldn t find anything of the sort) and they weren t even nice about it - like oh well, no drinks for you, not our problem even though there were literally bottles of wine and cups just sitting there (ever heard of a cash bar??) It was so dark it was a fire hazard and I could have fallen down the stairs - they served platters of cheese and crackers in the dark with no tongs, so we couldn t even see what we were putting on our plates. They had no backup generator, and were dismayed that we even asked about it. Finally, after 2+ hours of no power, we had to just pick up everything and leave to go to a nearby restaurant that could accommodate a group of 50-ish people so that folks could eat (and drink!) something. The wedding ceremony ended at 12:15pm and we didn t end up eating until 4pm. It was a major disaster, and the worst part is that the wayside inn staff wasn t even nice or apologetic or accommodating about it (no one brought out candles or flashlights when they power went out -they just shrugged and walked away!)
Brides beware - do not book this as a wedding venue.
Awesome, amazing as always, no one comes close. Historic dinning, food is amazing homemade wheat rolls and cornbread with the corn ground down the street at a hisyoric mill, great for pictures after perfect family meal..service fantastic!
This place is doubtless one of the most attractive place in the neighborhood. Whenever I visit this place I am remarkably happy. They preserve their high standard service and the topmost level of dishes they provide. You no doubt will love this place. Very recommended.
Excellent luncheon menu. The special for the day was Sirloin smothered with a delicious mushroom gravy. Service matched the taste and the portion. Beautiful colonial atmosphere with a warming fireplace nearby to banish the chill from outside.
