The comments perfectly reflect the reality of the airport. No organization, unhealthy facilities and sweltering heat.
Too small for a tourist region that welcomes many people. Too much waiting for check-in luggage, a real nightmare ...
Small, clear airport. In the high season the airport is at the limit of its capacity.
Worst airport I have ever seen!!!
Normally 0 stars
-no air conditioning
-the screens are so small, hard to see anything - also information not on time, we had to ask around where to check in
so dirty
so small and overcrowded
after check in we had to bring our language to another area??? What is this? Are we in 1977???
it is also looking so ugly
It's hot. Not enough seating, dozens of people stay up. Suddenly, everyone falls back into the game space of children to find small benches where to wait. Food really not healthy. In addition, the sandwich stands offer absolutely nothing gluten-free and lactose-free. A lot of delay on flights.
Very neatly walked after that it was difficult at the check-in desk for a chair change because daughter could not sit at the emergency exit because of her plaster leg. the appliance .Super
Airport is too small to cater for number of tourists coming in and out of the island .
Very busy but for crete is wasn't too badly organised.
So we can not understand or share experiences of some here. Fastest check-in ever. From the reception of the boarding pass via security control to arrival gate under 10 min. We were there 3 hours before departure and it was all relaxed. In the arrivals hall there were some places between 28 and 31 degrees which changed in the waiting area of the gate, because everything was air-conditioned. The sanitary facilities went to the toilet for a short time. If you want to stay overnight you should do it somewhere else. The cleaning staff are not the ones who leave everything dirty, but those who do not know how to handle a toilet brush. The prices are of course also overpriced at any other airport. The one who likes to have lunch or dinner with his family should go out in town and enjoy one of the many delicious and of course cheaper cafes. The holiday was very nice and the flow of the departure did not affect the whole thing. We wanted to mention that we were for the first time on the island of Crete and thus did not know the process here.
Does what it has to do. Dirty toilet's little staff and long lines.
Hectic security checks, long delays, not enough seating at the gates (or anywhere else) and more shops selling tacky tourist items than decent food places. Well, it gets you there and back again, I presume.
Great view while waiting for the departure ... otherwise southern hustle and bustle and toilets- well ...
Dirty dirty dirty....
It's a Shame !!!
Much too small airport; packed close together even in corona times
The airport is far too small for the crowd, the announcements are totally overdriven. There is garbage everywhere. The toilet looks very bad, no toilet seats it stinks the faucets are broken because it looks better on a station toilet.
The usual grumpy staff but overall not a bad experience. Did go to use a hand sanitizer and it was empty tho.
Appalling
Slow, disorganized as possible, endless queues, Signs out of order and so on.
Very pleasant staff and doing their best with the means at hand ...
Need to be there 2h min in advance to make up for the shortcomings.
Small but ok airport with some duty free shops. Nothing super comfy for long waiting for the flight.
In principle, just one word would be enough "chaos". All passengers close together. No soap to wash your hands in the toilets, no "towels" to dry your hands. Nothing to see of disinfectant far and wide .... Air to cut. Totally unacceptable in times of Covid !!
We were more than happy that we were finally on the plane - 45 minutes late of course.
Disgusting toilets otherwise well so airport definitely had better in Greece. Incidentally, we only started from there did not land because we had made a cruise
Scrap airport security checks equal zero unfriendly staff walk up the stairs to the bus and walk up at the plane scrap rust 3
It is a good airport ...
Although a little dirty, but otherwise everything is normal
They lost my suitcase and don't speak a word of English
The reviews and appearance of the airport do him an injustice. The outgoing tiling area has been recently renovated and the duty free is really large (relative to the size of the field) with a variety of products at reasonable prices. In addition there are a number of cafes (before and after the passport and their prices are favorable compared to other airports in the world (for example in May 2018 water cost half a euro and coffee 3 euros). I do not know what the situation is that there is a lot of traffic
Based on how many passengers the airport was designed for and how many people it actually serves, the organization works surprisingly smoothly. The sanitary facilities are however a weak point.
Horrible airport. Kaos everywhere. Dirty. Disgusting toilets. Avoid if you can.
Absolute joke of an airport considering the island's income is based on tourism!
1. No information provided on where to go for check in/bag drop
2. Information board only showing information last minute and causing a stampede
3. There was a queue to get to security to then queue again!
4. This queue for security took over 30 minutes which was manned by useless staff standing about chatting. In addition to this there was a multitude of locals skipping the queue 'because they were late' and thus caused the queue to take even longer.
5. Security went through my bag before scanner without my permission and chucked it on the belt unceremoniously
6. Duty free staff were rude with ridiculous pricing throughout
7. Queue to get on to the plane was also a joke, absolute carnage and none of the staff in the airport could organise a tea party.
8. Toilets were absolutely vile - could see the cleaners but think they were just there for show.
Terrible airport, terrible staff and a huge damper on the holiday experience.
The worst organized airport that you have ever experienced. You move from snake to snake. Luggage is not accepted at the check-in but has to be carried to the next counter where a queue is waiting for you. If you are "lucky" you need more than the usual two hours for everything.
Grubby and generally chaotic. However, it was fairly speedy getting through the various security checks.
Very disorganized airport with about one information screen for the whole terminal on the airside. Unclear info about delays other than check-in attendants wandering around airport looking for lost passengers.
Be vary careful of what luggage you have. We didn't get charged but the staff where going out of there way to change anyone 60 euros for the slightest infringement. Case 2 cm too wide? 60 euros. I doubt any of it gets back to the flight companies. Very rude
Well I will start with saying that we will not be visiting Crete again until the airport and the bureaucracy within it is vastly improved..
It was nothing but queue after queue with unhelpful staff.
1. A queue to actually enter the airport with
our luggage.
2. A queue to check in even know this was
done on line prior.
3. A queue to weigh our luggage
4. A queue to check our luggage in.
5. A queue as long as the airport for
passport control.
6. A queue to X-ray us and our hand luggage.
By this time we was about to miss our flight home so we had to push in front!
Well over 3 hours of nothing but queues, no time for food or shopping, straight on the plane..
Very disappointed!
The old terminal is not prepared to absorb summer visitors from all countries in the region, there is no place to charge cell phones and need for multiple delays of all kinds of flights, Field disappointing !!!
Yesterday we flew from the above airport to Germany and I have to say I have never seen such a dirty airport, on the toilets no soap or paper, everything broke and it smelled very unpleasant, you could not touch, no matter on which floor. This can not be only 1 day! I think that an airport is the flagship even if many people visit the airport, it is an international audience. Right then!
Toilets are bad. The building is dirty. Luggage went relatively quickly. A VIP arrangement is recommended on departure to alleviate the long waiting times.
Pure chaos, best to bring a lot of time and patience for the departure ...
No problem at arrivals but departures is completely different story. Had to wait outside for ninety minutes do the check in decks having problems, basically nothing was working. When we did manage to get to check in massive queues with no staff looking like they had done it before. 3 bags to check to 10 minutes then had to take to a separate X-ray area and queue again. Toilets are just bloody disgusting, flooded and just stink. Duty free has had millions spent on it and looks nice. Depending on time going and delays don t expect to be able to sit down. Zero information boards too so make sure your listening out to the anocements if you can hear them
Very quiet because of Corona no problems when entering
I never seen in my entire life a dirtiest and disorganized aereoport like this. What a shame.
CHAOS. Prices on tax free are not correct! Hard to find seating ...
You have to give the star unfortunately, otherwise you can not rate
It is the worst thing there is .. because the plumsklos were still hygienic in the 50s. All stinks here are the toilets are blocked especially since there are only 2 toilets with 8 doors where only max 2 of can be used for thousands of travelers catastrophic conditions , The airport is closed !!!!!!
Just one type of beer.
ATTENTION after duty free (where there is no beer) it costs 4.70 in the bistro.
at gate A1 only 3.70 :)
This airport is much too small for the local amount of people and the loud noise of the announcements are hard to understand. Within 60 minutes, our gate had changed twice, which we almost too late.
At check in the staff was really rude and stuffy. The delivery of the suitcase is done separately and not immediately at check-in.
In itself, we found the airport to be quite clean except the toilets. Apart from the fact that you did not want to touch the conditioner, it did not work.
Here should be vigorously invested.
Great airport, very nice staff, no waiting for check in times of high attendance. All control passes in 20min. Perfect it changes from France.
Old, cramped airport. In the afternoon, squeeze and lack of oxygen at check-in. Air conditioning probably doesn't exist. Terrible condition of the toilets. An unpleasant departure from such a beautiful island.
Passengers take buses to and from the plane Elsewhere, this is solved in a better way, ie by tubeub
Absolute hole, all the negative reviews are 100% spot on. Arriving from the uk was fine as your just waved through after a long wait for your bags. The toilets are beyond belief, to clean your hands there was a cheap filthy bottle of goop on the shelf.....not fixed to the wall, just sitting there like someone had brought it from home or a passenger left it there, the floor was a wash with used tissue mixed with pee and other delights, no air con anywhere, you wait for a departure call to grab a seat and the security staff where sub human, the check in staff where fine and helpful though.Other reviews had suggested flying into chania instead which I would recommend as cretes bus services will take you anywhere on the island for buttons and they're frequent. Over a thousand reviews for this dump and not many are good so be warned it's filthy , hot and and I don't think it's had any investment since it was built! Fly to chania and get a air conditioned coach to yr hotel for less than a tenner!
I was dreading this airport after reading all the reviews. Well all I can say is either we were really lucky or they ve sorted it out. Currently sat by the gate in air conditioned bliss having arrived at the airport 30 mins ago. It s clean, quick, friendly, and all you d expect from a loca airport. Ok the duty free is manic, queues everywhere but once through that there is a smaller duty free and a couple of food outlets at. All with a view of the sea and the runway. I really don t understand where the 1 star reviews come from.
Ques are fast and unlike many (or previously made) comments I think they offer enough seating. However the air conditioning is a disaster and I definitely lost 2 liters of sweat waiting for the boarding.
They also should turn on all the TVs and screens which show boarding info (why keep many of them turned off when installed already). The announcements are being made only at one side the airport and you need to guess what has been announced if you are at the other side of the airport.
Honestly I believe Greeks are doing their best but this airport needs updates to become a convenient international airport - othwerwise it's a terrible last memory of the island being cooked alive waiting in the airport.
The worst airport for such city. Idiotic airport with ad hoc prices for everything.
There is not much to eat there and if you have to queue for a long time
Very clearly and well organized. The return flight went without any problems. We would love to come back
What a dramatically bad airport. Bad and faulty toilets (and the rest too). Way too small, or way too busy. Very unfortunate to start and end the holiday in this way.
The passage is very fast and the exit of the luggage too. Everything is very well signposted and very easy access to buses.
Dreadful! The airport is much too small, even without CoVid there is no space in the waiting area. People pile up, the gates are changed and displayed incorrectly, if you then stand at the supposedly correct exit, you will also be molested by the staff. Instead of helping, they are full of furies. The store should be shut down immediately, disaster! Clear violation of the infection protection requirements. Abet the main thing the duty free shop is modern and spacious. Pooh! Shame on you!
I don't know how they are able to accept such a number of passengers. Nobody knows nothing. Crap like hell, no organization. The first time luggage from 3 different flights on one "bast". It worked out a little better the second time.
This airport should be closed asap. Incredible mess, just avoid this airport for you health....
Clear airport with absolutely unfriendly and overstrained acting staff.
For Greece islands it s very good airport, really. Modern and big. But passport control not ready for big groups which arrive same time :-) today passport control took me approx 45 mins (and it was only 1 plane)
! !
. !
. !
Do not use a fake passport to travel to Europe from this airport. The police will arrest you and put you in prison!
- Completely insufficient capacities
- Toilets (at least for men) an impertinence [no litter boxes, no toilet paper, broken doors, flushing does not work, etc.]
- too little and unfriendly staff
- complete overload at peak times [simply put: if you don't push your way in various lines, you miss your flight]
- rather head for the smaller Chania airport, which is not that bad
This airport is just a mess ! No where To sot when you have passe the security control. If you can avoid it.
Thanks to Tui's fast check-in we were able to pass all queues. What was particularly worth it, because on that day the conveyor belt for the suitcase had failed.
Shiite airport staffed by (sorry don't wish to be rude) ars**oles. Appaling
Very crowded and after we queded for an hour for check in, it turns out they don't have a conveyor belt that takes your luggage to the plane at the check in desks. There is one but it literally stops in a wall so you have to queue again at a different desk in order to drop it off.
Dirty, tight and unorganized. Although the vacation was great, I will not do this airport again
Toilets are impossible, information is not very good, if something changes, it is usually just called into the room, if that all noticed is apparently does not matter. After all, this time went the luggage belts, so we did not have to do with our suitcases again an advance. It still shimmers, Kofru was even more crowded, although it is hard to believe ;-)
The only airport where pax throws registered baggage for X-ray in heimanne. So a Greek henhouse, not an airport.
Not a nice departure airport, gate totally overcrowded. Not exemplary, especially in times of corona. Especially when you pay attention to it on the plane.
Long line at the security checkpoint!
Short ways. Receive our luggage in a few minutes on arrival. At departure directly to check-in. Clearance very quickly.
Unfair to judge with the covid restrictions in place, but very useful bus connections and helpful staff.
This is the VIP lounge at Heraklion Airport. It cost an extra 40 per person. Currently the airport is struggling to cope with the volume of passengers. When we got off the coach we were literally whizzed through check in and security to the tranquility and calm of the VIP lounge. Well worth the extra cost - if you can afford it of course.
Nice small airport. Fast check-in, fast baggage handling, etc
New duty free, but more expensive than in the store. Fast handling.
A disgusting airport! Urgent need of reconstruction. Defended the turn 2 times that would hand over the luggage. The first time at the check-in desk that would get a boarding pass, the second time that would hand over the suitcases for security checks. The places for waiting in the registration area are just one. What is Wi-Fi at the airport probably does not even know.
Disorganised and disgracefull! After spending time in a queue to get a tag for our hold bags (already having checked-in online), we needed to join another huge queue to x-ray the hold bags. After this, a third long queue for security checks. All in all, you need more than 2 hours to go through all this. We arrived at the airport more than 2 hours in advance and we almost missed our flight. I haven't seen such bad organising anywhere else. If they would get to grips with how they manage their check-in and security checks, they might have a chance to actually sell food or duty free items to customers before flights. As things stand, there isn't time for anything but stand and wait for hours in long lines.
