Smaller, sometimes a bit confusing, airport. He reminded me of airports from the 60's where you tried to install a bit of modernity.
Smaller, sometimes a bit confusing, airport. He reminded me of airports from the 60's where you tried to install a bit of modernity.
Simple airport with few facilities. The decor is practical and gray. Stray cats are walking around the airport.
Partly a bit confusing but the switch is still found. You do not live in your own country. For this reason o.k.
Revolting toilets - looks like they haven't been cleaned in ages.
The rest - food, duty free, security - is OK
Untidy in the toilet area's, but the rest was clean and tidy the staff are helpful to the point of wanting save you money on your purchases. Air conditioning and seating were okay.
Horrible airport, toilets nasty, felt like it wasn't cleaned for a week. Shops have ridiculous prices and most shops were closed when I was there.
I really like Crete but the airport Heraklion is horrible, and everyone working there seems angry.
Also they took my deodorant and said it wasn't allowed when clearly the rules say it's allowed to take with you if it's inside a sealed bag.
The reviews are very accurate. Arrivals is quite quick so you dont get a feeling of what is to come on the return. Finding and boarding the coaches to hotels is beyond belief. Its amazing that the balet played by the manouvering busses does not knock over people trying to get to thir alloted bus.
Checking in is far below standard for an EU country. Badly organised with very small monitors showing gates etc. Seating is inadequate and with gates a few meters from security, cramped and difficult to negotiate. Air con is none existant to the point that even the staff were fanning them selves to cool down
A small airport is insufficient to serve such a large number of visitors.
Despite the corona, everything as usual. Full of people. No gaps, etc ...
Excessive prices, toilet ,
Well, it has been there for 30 years and I think it will never change
Very long waiting times at the baggage handover 1.5 hours and the tape was changed 3 times without an announcement, so if you trusted the 1 ad you will still be on the tape for the next few years.
Bad airport
- Processing bad
- organization bad
- Dirty
Simply an impertinence
Very small for one of the biggest tourist destinations
Unbelievable condition on the toilets! Pulled toilets with toilet paper stuffed no soap, no water from the taps. Check in scales weigh 2 kilos too much! Boarding disaster, people are standing on the stairs for 30 minutes until the shuttle bus finally arrives. Outside also ailing and garbage.
Probably the worst airport in the world. There is No AC (!!) and the place is hot as HELL. Your mobile phone battery is low? Well, you won't find any electrical outlet to charge it. Hungry? There are only 2 places which sell overpriced sandwiches. Flights delayed due to the fact they don't have many boarding points. I guess we wont visit crete anytime soon. This was actually a huge disappointment and ruined a good taste from a fabulous vacation.
Badly maintained airport
Very long queues
The shuttle service from the airport to the aircraft is also not acceptable
In short, for being the main airport of Crete it is badly kept
And not to mention cleaning the hygiene of the bathrooms
ADMISSIBLE ... MUCH ... VERY WORLD IN A LITTLE SQUARE .... THIRD-SITUATION ... AIR CONDITION DON'T WORK REGULARLY ..... WELL EVERYWHERE SO EVER COUNTRY.
HAPPY NEW CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW AIRPORT TO KASTELI ... TO COME .... QUICKLY ..
There are of course some positive ... AS THE ACUTE boarding WITHOUT THE USE AND DIRECT BUS ....... loading luggage ... No Need to Carry BY TRAVELERS say ..... !!!! !
Very dirty and much too small airport. Staff were very overwhelmed and listless, we were glad to finally sit in the plane.
Sanitary in bad condition. One cafe behind the security check that asks 4,70 for a regular cappuccino and 3,30 for a croissant. Ridiculous!
Totally fine airport, bonus points for getting through security in 2 minutes at 4pm on a Friday.
Serves a lot of smaller airlines, who don t have as much automation as larger airlines, expect a more manual check in process. Easy to navigate.
Tragic airport. Not fully prepared for such a number of passengers. Crowds, queues, inability to move freely without pushing hundreds of people. First, you stand in a huge queue for your flight ticket, where you only weigh your luggage and tag it. Then you have to stand in the next huge queue to give these bags. This queue is one for the whole airport !!! Obsolete customs control system - they have to pull out a book with a bookmark because they thought it was a knife. Completely unsuitable for small children. We traveled with a 9 month old son. The lack of air conditioning and the enormity of people causes unbearable heat at the airport and upset children. Smelly, dirty rooms for changing children. No feeding room. Few seating, expensive shops. Espresso 3.7 euros !!! The second time in Crete, we will not be back again because of the airport that causes neurosis in people.
Waited exactly 1 hour for check-in. After that, everything was quick. It worked, so it got a flight, but why is this unspeakable stress? What is the point of web check-in if there is no bag drop and you still have to queue? 2 stars only because the staff were friendly. Was at the airport exactly 2:30 hours before the flight. This can be done better!
The only remarkable thing that is worth 1 of the two stars is the new departures (sponsored by Duty Free), otherwise miserable for the country's 2nd largest passenger airport and gateway to Crete, No1 tourist destination!
The airport is getting old, but it does not fulfill its purposes any more.
For our flight were opened due to the large rush extra 3 new switches.
The staff is very friendly therefore three stars and not less.
Dirty toilet without paper and the hand dryer doesn't work either. Control staff very friendly.
Small and very busy airport. Terrible and overpriced coffee and drinks. We felt like canned tuna waiting for our delayed flight.
Chaos. Queue Queue Queue. Extremely expensive. Steer clear if you can.
Like other commentators, the airport is a tragedy. Late PRL when everything was falling apart. Wettets are a failure. As the saying goes; stench, dirt and poverty. I do not recommend but there is no choice
Not lots to see but was quick for passports and baggage
Full, no distance possible, warm.
Absolutely overpriced prices. The mask requirement is also not observed.
Disorganization, chaos, dirty toilets, only a couple of places to eat (terrible, by the way, and with very high prices). An island like Crete would need a probably larger and better organized airport.
After having read all the reviews I was expecting way worse. Our personal experience was quite all right actually. We were also serviced by a lady who was super nice.
Airport not very big and a bit chaotic but average. Small diuty free and bar inside
dramatic airport, there is huge chaos everywhere. At the gate to the plane instead of a vending machine for drinks (such a vending machine is not available at the entire airport!) There is a vending machine for seeds (e.g. watermelon, courgette etc.) (sic!). The duty-free zone may have a wide range, but there is absolute chaos, massive queues to ticket offices. If you can, it's better to avoid this airport by a wide gap, it is not at all prepared for the number of tourists who is there.
Catastrophic airport. Completely crowded, too little space and seating. Departures are arbitrarily changed, toilets dirty. Unfriendly staff.
This airport is the last one, dirty and no longer standard, personally I have never seen toilets so dirty. I wonder if they have no pride .....
Disaster !!! ... If the unfriendly transaction, the chaotic conditions and the amateurish organization at this airport, symbolizes the country Greece, then I realize why it is so ordered to the country ... Crete is beautiful, breathtakingly beautiful, the locals, accommodating and hospitable ... but the almost four hours at this airport catastrophic!
Will we come back? ... I do not know!
The toilets lacked seats and some also had locks..not to mention the toilet paper. One star of food.
Lovely people, quick passport control, all details checked throughly, couldn't be safer considering current times
It is actually a relatively small airport for the number of fliers. The airport itself is also relatively old. You can even hand in the suitcase and leave the terminal again completely. From the security controls onwards, things will become more modern. The gates can only be reached through duty free. The only way to get to and from the plane is by bus. Fortunately, due to Corona these were not filled and drove more often.
It is very small but that is not a problem. The problem is that it is anitquisimo and succinct. The bathrooms are third world
It seems to be quite crowded in summer, but everything I used was smooth in early September. The scenery before boarding is the best!
During the flight to Athens, Santorini and slightly Mykonos are visible on the right.
The airport was so busy and no one was queuing it told to queue we were all pushed and huddled together which is shocking as we're experiencing a global pandemic
Pretty small airport. Both in Ankufts- as well as in the work area, the toilets are in poor condition, dirty and partially broken. Long wait for the luggage (awkward and slow baggage conveyor system). Rest was ok, staff friendly. Otherwise typical tourist airport.
Amazing that there's no policing of mask wearing. Half the locals seem to think they can leave their nose uncovered. Greece is lucky it's protected by the heat and outdoor lifestyle.
I was stressed because my taxi was very late (cost 10 euro by the way). I didn't arrive at the airport till 1hr 15 mins before my flight. From heraklion city center (by venetian harbour) to my airport gate past security, it took me 20 mins! But that is because I checked in online and printed off my boarding pass and I only have carry on luggage. If you're carrying light, this airport is functional. I'm too scared to use the washrooms based on other reviews. However, now that I'm lining up for the gate, it is very organized chaos in here. Multiple departures at the same time so it's very crowded.
Worst airport ever. The departure hall is full to the top. Poor air conditioning / ventilation ... Little toilets. Nice Berliners met at the airport Desegen a star.
There is nothing to criticize ... use the WCHS and everything works out very well
Small airport.
Not much bigger than a big train station.
But equipped with everything you need.
And everything is super easy signposted.
We travelled through Heraklion Airport for the umpteenth time a couple of days ago. Admittedly we avoided most of the queuing as we were with Jet 2.
It's a typical Greek airport and no more geared up to take your money than UK airports are.
Avoid high food prices by taking your own with you, hence you'll only need to buy a drink.
Charge your phone in advance, spend less time staring at it and you don't have to worry about lack of charging points!
Ok, it's a little rough round the edges but it's your way in and out of this beautiful island.
There's much worse places.
A small airport that can't cope with holiday crowds at all. Waiting for luggage over 2 hours during arrival.
Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of problems. The departure was much worse. A huge crowd of people, stuffy, no air conditioning, inoperative information board about departures and arrivals. The Depart CheckIn number after standing in the mega queue and making sure at the airport service suddenly changes and everyone with their suitcases pushes to another place. Next is another huge queue for luggage and it's all in ghosts, clutter and dirt. Once we managed to go further and get on the plane which was delayed because of this confusion because passengers were still arriving, the baggage officer stated that we could not fly because there were 3 suitcases from another plane in our plane and they had to unpack and search all. I haven't seen such a commotion and shit at any other airport. (Apparently this confusion today was because they lacked electricity.)
The arrivals hall is hopeless. Claiming our luggage upon our arrival was a nightmare. Luggage from 3 planes was thrown onto 1 belt, there was a lot of crush and a mess. Toilets in a deplorable condition, dirt and stench. Similarly with departures, except that it is better after check-in and security control, the shop and waiting room are of a completely different standard. Low prices for an airport in Europe are also an advantage.
This place is a hole! Overcrowded and dirty! We were planning to have breakfast at the airport but this was impossible to do! Just one place with the junk food and pretty high prices for the coffee. Prices for the souvenirs are overwhelming! So do not repeat our mistakes and do all the stuff beforehand! Still can t believe that such popular tourist destination has that ugly airport!
Small airport. The delay on the flights because of the small track for full of planes. Not enough outlets available.
Unorganized. Dirty. 14 days vacation and after this airport more stressed than before !!! Outrageous, for the coal they pull out of their pocket here at the airport. The reason not to fly again to Crete. Upon arrival, from one baggage bank to another. At the time of departure pure catastrophe waited a long time everything was in chaos.
A challenge every time.
There is one star for entry, which works reasonably smoothly.
But you have to be really lucky when you take off.
Extreme chaos this time!
More than 2 hours to check in and there was no progress.
Staff totally incompetent and disorganized.
... and that especially during Corona times.
Very incomprehensible that cigarettes are not sold to Europeans.
Extremely long control when boarding ID and ticket.
Just chaos. Nobody knows what is going on here. The employees don't care
Despite the Corona strike and the crowds, total chaos. Insufficient capacity.
Not a word for this airport. The Greeks don't seem organized to me.
Cluttered, crowded, too small and not enough seating options.
AC only in some parts of the airport
Wifi is shotty
Bad facilities
unacceptable in every respect. information and hygienic condition of the toilets absolutely insufficient.
There is nothing positive about this airport.
- No or hardly any directions or information, both regarding arrival and departure
- Toilets apparently no longer cleaned for months
- Staff rude and very uninterested
- Baggage check-in & security check do not begin to meet the European standard and are also not sufficiently dimensioned
- no possibility to eat anything, as there was nothing fresh at the few points of sale
- English language skills of the staff for an international airport inadequate (especially since on the island itself strangely everyone speaks English and most even speak German)
Hopefully something will happen here in the coming years, the current state is unacceptable. However, the friendly taxi drivers in front of the airport deserve a positive mention.
Inside the devastation. I had to run for luggage on arrival. It turned out that Moscow luggage was issued where it says Tel Aviv.
In other respects, there is almost no horror. Before landing, the flight was registered and customs for 10 minutes. Can the repair benefit go?
The waiting room is certainly a jam, but in general it is not critical. The room is good Greek Coffee.
Bad airport
Everything is disorganized
Pure chaos.
Just as many opinions are not good either, chaos is probably the best word. Long waiting time in front of the gate, in advance and earlier on arrival we had to wait for permission to start from Poznan, although the flight was delayed anyway. I honestly do not recommend anything at this airport. No air conditioning !!!
Bad airport, no aircon, dirty, unfriendly staff, no aircon (always hot and smelly) and it's small and crowded. One of the worst and smallest international airports I've seen indeed.
They must to use the check-in online to avoid long queues in a really small airport. Everything was so slowly... And at 2 am your body is not capable to wait
If there is an option with zero stars. I got it. Disgusting!!!!
Small airport compared to FRA. It is best to plan a longer waiting time.
Canceled airport. Arrival was still ok, the departure a state of emergency. The toilets are only recognizable as such during duty-free. From Duty Free better than 2 years ago. Still, it will not be more than a star.
What is it ???!!!! I almost took off my skates yesterday. I changed 3 T-shirts, stuffy, the heat is not real, everywhere it s all, one shop for the whole airport where to buy water or something cold. Our flight was at 23:50 and everything was so bad. I imagine being in this steam room during the day. They put me on a bus to get to the plane, just heat, stuffy. As rams drove us and for about 7 minutes the door did not open. I did not expect such an airport from such a huge island. In Santorini it s not, in other small islands the airport is much better. Do not you guys urgently need to take on airport repair UPGRADE urgently needed. Just spoil the whole wonderful vacation of a beautiful island in 3 hours at the airport.
No lounge is open, and there is no evidence of it. When you finally find the lounge it is closed. Nobody predicts this, not even at the check-in one of these hints is given, so that you can at least save yourself the walk through the crowds. Toilets moderately clean to badly dirty ", nothing to dry off your hands available.
There is only one soap dispenser if you are lucky with soap. No hygiene clearances possible. There is simply no space for distance with the waiting crowds. Scary airport with little support for travelers but potential for contagion!
A good one is not a big airport. Compact. An interesting location - right on the beach. It's interesting to watch in the window of the plane for its landing :)
Only 2 tracks for getting baggage, but this does not interfere with its receipt. A little prolonged unloading. But it's better to wait a little longer than to get your luggage quickly, but without handles or wheels ... When leaving the airport on the left side there is a taxis. Get to almost anywhere in the city will cost 15 euros. When registering and boarding a plane, the staff also works well. The standard scheme. The airport building is not bad. The toilets are clean, but not all works properly. In general, a solid four.
Rude staff, little choice in duty free, no power outlets to wait.
It's a small airport, so that can be understood. But still.
No complaints. Of course we are not in Frankfurt or London. Lacks a bit of means to modernize
Horrible Management at this airport. They opened only 1 belt (from 4) for all the arrived flights. It was not possible to keep distance in danger of COVID-19!
