Last week, my husband and I adopted a 15 month old Rottie puppy from the Adoption Service Location at PetsMart. Originally, he had been at the facility on Kelvin and the workers took the time to tell my husband where the puppy was located. The young lady at PetsMart named, Hannah, was not only friendly but efficient in her handling the paperwork in order for us to get the puppy home to become part of our family. Now, our Doberman, Shadow, is thoroughly enjoying his new best friend.

We had to put our 20 year old kitty down and the ladies here were magnificent! They were patient and caring. I was happy they let us have a few extra minutes to say goodbye. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

Took my 1 year old rescue for his vaccinations and the lady Maya came out to the waiting room and very rudely and loudly in front of people told me that my dog was very unmanageable and hard to work with. He s never had a problem at the vet or the groomers not sure why the doctors here couldn t manage him. I saw how Maya drags the dogs by their leash behind the doors and doesn t know how to talk to them so maybe the one who has problems is her and not the dogs. In the end, I waited 2 hours and they wouldn t vaccinate him.
Update: I took him to Pet DoctorX on Oracle and Orange Groove and they had no problem getting everything done

The staff here is great! We came in to look for a kitten to join our family and the staff were very helpful in showing us cats that would fit our family. They took the time to really get to know us to match our temperament with our future kitten. They have a good selection of animals but really demonstrate an understanding and care for these furry friends.

The humane society offers great services for pet owners and lovers. They offer pet adoption for cats and dogs. Occasional they have other animals like rabbits or hamsters available. They also have a clinic that you can take animals you adopted to be fixed (spayed/neutered) at a much lower cost than any vets office I have found. They offer microchip if you request it and they help you get you dogs registered with the county. They also do vaccinations here. The clinic is just south of the adoption center and can be a little confusing but if you can't figure it out the staff are very friendly and will help you get where you need to be. We brought our little kitty boy in and they took good care of him and sent us home with clear instructions on how to make him comfortable after his procedure. They also helped us understand everything we needed to about his vaccinations. This is an amazing service they offer to help keep pets in the community safe and healthy.

I went here with my little brother so he could get himself a new kitty. The place was so beautiful! They really did an amazing job with their remodel. I loved the atmosphere and the actual rooms the cats got to be in instead of cages all day. The people here were really friendly and helpful as well and all around it was a great experience. My brother ended up with a new baby kitten to love and now I'm workin on the husband to let me get another kitty too. I will definitely recommend the Human Society of Southern Arizona to any and every one! Excellent place!

They're very kind and helpful, no matter which department/area you visit. For your pet's health it's important to have them spayed/neutered and vaccinated. They're EXTREMELY affordable!! If your pet(s) has/have previously received vaccinations from them then they will tell you at your clinic visit what vaccines are currently needed so that you don't have to worry about guessing or trying to keep track of what to get and they answer any questions about required and optional vaccines. They don't replace taking your pet(s) to a veterinarian, which is important to have annual check-ups with, but they save you money and give you a very basic view of your pet's health (weight, temperature, etc). The only downside is that I didn't see any area outside designated for pets to go to the bathroom. The only areas I saw were locked and for staff only. Luckily my dogs are trained to go to the bathroom on rocks/gravel and as a responsible pet owner I carry multiple poo bags wherever we go. I think that's the only complaint I have. I constantly highly recommend people to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona if you're looking to add a lifelong pet/family member to your family and to definitely get your pet's vaccinations there as well as getting your pet(s) spayed/neutered and microchipped there.

These people should go out of business. We lost our dog while visiting in Tucson. After posting her info everywhere and putting up signs we started contacting animal shelters.

The Humane Society people never answered their phone and never called back. My daughter who lives in Tucson would also drive to shelters every three days. The Humane Society people wouldn't let her see the animals. She had to be accompanied to do that, but to be accompanied she had to wait an hour or so every time.. (this on top of the 30 minute drive each way, and zero info because you can't call them!)

Are they trying to help people and pets? If so they are terrible at it, and uncaring and obstructive in the process.

Take found animals to Pima Animal Control instead. They have a much better chance there of being reunited with the people who love them.!

My dog Max (Irish Wolfhound, almost 4 years old) g...

My dog Max (Irish Wolfhound, almost 4 years old) got loose Saturday morning. In my neighborhood he is brought back before I even realize that he is gone. The particular neighbor that picked him up this time decided to drive around with him looking for me even though I was home. She came to me after three hours of driving around (so she said), and informed me that she had turned him to the humane society. Also had the nerve to tell me it was a $35 fee to drop him off but I did not have to pay her back.
When I went to the Humane Society on Kelvin I ID'd him and was told that it would cost over $300 to get him out if I did not fix him, over half of that was the fee for him just to be housed there. (He is almost four now and I have kept him unfixed because later I wanted to breed him and keep the puppies so after I lost him I would have something more then just a picture). But if I decided to fix him then it would only be $108, this was because I would not have to pay for his stay there. I left them letting them know I would call and they said if I decided to get him fixed I can pick him up on Tuesday and pay then.
I was not able to get a hold of them on Saturday so I tried calling Sunday and Monday but they did not have an answering service or machine so I had to wait till Tuesday. I finally got a hold of someone and they informed me that my dog was being evaluated for adoption. Of course I was angry. So I had to be late to work and was forced to get him fixed because I did not have the money to get him out of there unfixed.
I am infuriated that I was forced to get him fixed because of money after taking so much negativity from people because I did not have him fixed from the time I got him when he was 4 months old.
I have a hatred to the humane society that I will never be able to explain. These people claim to want to help the animals but they are there for the money and to manipulate people into doing it the way they want to.
I got my cat from them and previously thought they were awesome but after this experience I will never support them or go through them to get an animal. My dog was in that place for five days because of them and he has never even been to the pound before, I received him from a home that had 2 other big dogs. I love my dog with all my heart and am heartbroken that I had to fix him because of money and because that is what they thought was best for him. Owners now a days do not have any say whatsoever.
I would not recommend anyone to go through them if you have a conflicting thought of what you want for your animal.

They helped me locate my Service Dog which somehow got out of the yard when he had been let out to pee. After 4 days gone in the desert when he's from Northern California, it was a blessing that the couple that found him took such good care of him while they had him!

I had my manx cat spayed and microchipped with no complications for a very reasonable cost here. They offer pain relief medication for pets after surgery for an extra cost and when I asked if the cashier thought it necessary she was honest and explained male cats have little to no problems with recovery and I wouldn't need it. I also brought my rabbit here once and although they mis-sexed him (which I read is common but who knows) and couldn't perform the surgery I feel confident that they treated my rabbit with care and only stopped the procedure for his safety. I would bring my pets here again and would probably adopt too.

They took the time to tell me everything I needed to know about my new dog Peter before putting him in my arms. If your an animal person be careful it's hard to walk out without one :) the staff was amazing and there are many animals that need a new home!

First off, I want to point out that I am a huge animal lover and supporter of the Humane Society as an organization. This review is about this local chapter only. Over the last two decades of being in Tucson, my wife and I regularly come across dogs and cats (normally cats). We get them neutered, shots and rehomed. Now we have a one-year-old daughter and have three cats and one dog, all of whom are the difficult ones to rehome so we kept them ourselves.

Someone in our neighborhood doesn't fix their cats and so every year we get another litter of stray kittens roaming our street. Most of them are taken in, however, two remained and my home was the only one still feeding these (now) teen cats. Since one of them is regularly picked on by other neighborhood cats, my wife and I decided to help them. We got these siblings in kennels and took them to the humane society. One was taken in no-problem. The other was declined for being too feral. This was determined by poking this frightened young cat with a stick. Keep in mind that this was the first time this cat had been in a cage and experienced a car ride, all within 45 minutes.

So we took him home and after the first day, the cat chilled. He hasn't shown a single sign of being feral and is even great with our one-year-old. So after a week we called to setup an appointment. This is what upsets me. They refused to even see him again. They didn't care that it was his first car ride or first hour of ever being caged. They said "he failed our test" and refused. I pleaded, asking for them to at least run their tests again, and then if he fails, okay. Apparently helping this young cat wasn't worth their time.

They said to take him to PACC, but I refuse to bring any animal to a kill shelter. They told us we could take him to a feral program to be released with feral cats but he isn't feral. HSSA let us down. We already have so many animals and a daughter that taking in another animal, even for a short time, isn't feasible. So my options are basically to drop him off at the Pima Animal Death Camps or release him back into our neighborhood, where he no longer has his sibling (HSSA took him) and gets picked on by cat bullies.

So I won't be supporting HSSA anymore. I'll support the parent organization but not the local chapter. The local chapter is filled with quick-to-judge (aka pre-judgemental or prejudice) staff.

Thanks for checking out my review. Hopefully you have a better experience with them.

We have been fostering for the Humane Society for over 15 years now and we absolutely love it. We've gotten hundreds of puppies and all the support we could need! They provide food, kennels, toys, pee pads, vet care, everything! It's a beautiful thing to do and we're honored to get to be a part of it. Highly recommend fostering through them!! Adopting is great too! We've adopted plenty over the years as well, great process! :)

Overall an extremely terrible experience. The people were not friendly and were quick to judge. There was one lady, who especially was quick to judge. Because there were a great number of workers, there were times in which there were rotations and so not everyone was on the same page. I believe that that women told her coworkers that we were not fit to care for dog and so they too were very skeptical to allow us to adopt. I did the research and learned about the breed as well as what brand of dog food would be good. The man who introduced us to the dog was even surprised with my knowledge of the breed. They had us return at least 4 times to visit the dog and in the end they told us that we could not adopt the dog. First off, I live on the South side and it was literally half hour drives forward and back, so we were committed for the fact that we dealt with these people, made phone calls, and were willing to drive back and forth. We did have to call the shelter every day and sometimes we received multiple calls from different workers. They are unprofessional and are not on the same page because they would all tell us to come at different hours.

They tell people to rescue dogs and cats from shelters instead of adopting from breeders. But honestly, if they are going to put us through all that work and heartache, then they should have been upfront from the beginning. This experience has been awful and I would much rather adopt from a breeder or anyone BUT the Humane Society. Terrible Terrible Experience.

I was able to rescue 3 cats from here but that whole "no-kill" stuff is bullshit. We were not able to keep a stray dog that we found because she did not get along with our other animals but was a VERY loving dog. We took her to the Humane Society because we were under the impression, because they claimed to be a no kill shelter, that she would get the chance to be adopted to another family who would be able to care for her in the way she needed. Wrong. They would not let us see her after, she was not even put out on the floor to be adopted. A friend went in no less than a week later to try and adopt her, but by that time she had already been put down. They are horrible people who only care about their reputation and looking good, not the good of the animals!!!

If your dog does not meet their materialistic standards, they won t except him/her. I cannot keep my dog because she will not stay home and because she s a little pink and HAD a hot spot that is healing they wouldn t take her for me because they said they cannot treat her allergies, and they have a dog who has allergies who has been there for a year .

About Humane Society of Southern Arizona

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) is a non-profit organization that has been serving the community since 1944. With over 75 years of experience, HSSA has become a trusted resource for pet owners in the Southern Arizona region. The organization's mission is to promote responsible pet ownership and improve the lives of animals through advocacy, education, and support.

HSSA offers a wide range of services to help pets and their owners. One of their most popular programs is adoption. HSSA takes in thousands of animals each year and works tirelessly to find them loving homes. They have an extensive screening process for potential adopters to ensure that each animal goes to a safe and caring home.

In addition to adoption services, HSSA also provides low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for pets in need. This program helps reduce the number of unwanted litters and ultimately saves lives by preventing overcrowding in shelters.

HSSA also offers behavior training classes for dogs with behavioral issues such as aggression or anxiety. These classes are taught by certified trainers who use positive reinforcement techniques to help dogs overcome their challenges.

For pet owners who are struggling financially, HSSA has a Pet Assistance Program that provides food, supplies, and medical care for pets in need. This program helps keep families together during tough times by ensuring that they can still provide for their furry family members.

One unique aspect of HSSA is their partnership with local schools through their Compassion Education Program. This program teaches children about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare issues, and empathy towards all living beings.

Overall, The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is an invaluable resource for pet owners in the region. Their commitment to improving the lives of animals through education, advocacy, and support sets them apart from other organizations. If you're looking for assistance with your furry friend or want to make a difference in your community's animal welfare efforts - look no further than HSSA!
