Holiday Inn Express- Downtown Charleston Reviews

I would have given it a zero if that was an option! We had a terrible stay at this hotel!! Our room wasn t cleaned for 3 days and we had to hunt down the maid service to at least get fresh towels . The AC on the main floor and breakfast room was broken and registered 85 on the thermostat . At times we felt we were in a dog kennel. A girl brought a dog into the breakfast buffet line and then dropped food on the floor for it to eat. The most deplorable thing is the front desk did not give a heads up to the fact that their parking lot floods during heavy rain . Our rental car along with many other cars got flooded out with 4 inches of water inside the car!!

The good news apparently there's a new owner who is doing a major remodeling.

Had a really bad customer service experience with them this past weekend for Cooper Bridge Run. Wouldn't recommend it.

Room had a hole in the wall and a crack in the mirror.

Pros:
-great access to roads that take you all over town with ease. Everything is literally 5 mins away.
-super clean and very roomy.
-free breakfast was very nice each morning.
-beds and pillows here like sleeping on a cloud.

Cons:
-hot water could use adjustment. Showers didn't stay hot for more than 3 minutes.
-parking around the hotel is very limited but there is a secure parking garage across the street

Although there are cons, I would consider staying here again. The value is pretty good too.

Stayed for the weekend rooms were very clean customer service was very nice. I would recommend it to anyone

Worst Holiday Inn I've ever booked. Not only did the ad leave out the fact that it was an adjoining room, it was dated but more importantly dirty. The shower was gross. It had mold in the ring. We immediately left and stayed elsewhere. The front desk staff were amazing and understood why we couldn't stay here. They made ote if the issue in their book. I didn't (and wouldn't) recommend anyone stay here.

We had a handcaped room. Loved the shower.breakfast was very good. And staff where very helpful and nice.

Clean, comfortable and staff was friendly, pleasant and helpful. Our only issue was everytime we tried to get into our room we had to take our keys back to the front desk to get reprogrammed.
If they can get that issue resolved I would highly recommend them.

Excellent stay. Convenient location right along the trolley route. Short cab ride from this hotel to King Street. Staff was courteous. Rooms were comfortable. This hotel was a little pricey, but I can't complain too much about the rate because my reservation was over labor day weekend. I would definitely stay here again if I come back to Charleston. Breakfast was mediocre but it is also free so I won't complain about the breakfast either.

YUK! They forgot to mention the amount of construction which starts at crack o dark...it literally surrounds the property. The room is very humid even with air down actually just lukewarm air. Long black hair in bathroom on floor and sink. Don't book because it is non refundable! Nice view from my window...very loud!

The hotel is what you'd expect for that star rating for the most part. The parking situation sucks due to construction. The beds were clean. The bathroom shower did have some mold on the walls. The bathroom itself was pretty small. Overall it was okay. It's an older hotel that needs updates so the price doesn't quite match the quality as far as I'm concerned. I guess I paid for location mainly because MUSC is literally right there.

Stayed here for 5 nights. The first 3 were with some friends and then the last 2 were just me and my boyfriend. It was really nice and clean! The staff was very helpful! The breakfast is actually really good! The hotel is not right in downtown, it is about 5 minutes away, but it is worth saving the money. There is a really nice park right across the street from the hotel, perfect for kids. It is a playground, park, dog park, and pier, and the river. It is PERFECT to watch the sunset. The Riverdogs stadium is also right here. Parking is a little tight but they just extended their parking lot so it is a lot better.

Comfortable beds and clean room. Nice basic room for the money. Stayed with a dog too. Pet friendly

It's dated. Much much better hotels nearby. Not worth the money. The free breakfast is identical to a free breakfast you can get anywhere else. Nothing to write home about.

The hotel was quite junky, smells and the rooms where ghetto. My bed was even broken.

Property is very old and dated. The parking lot floods and they were short staffed and it shows. Def stay somewhere else next trip.

Rooms are clean but bathroom door didn't lock and parking is a freaking joke.

Nice place. There are a few things, if you want to be picky. The people are nice and the rooms are not bad. This is the second time I've stayed here.

The staff was great....the up keep of the place was a nightmare. The room we stayed in had a dirty towel hanging for use( wasn't thoroughly washed) the ceiling had a water leak spot that went from one end to the next, the hallway walls were filthy. My oldest daughter and I started itching after laying in our beds. The A/C smelled horrible.

Nicely decorated and pretty good breakfast. Traffic in the area is pretty bad and parking can be difficult at times. Super cold air conditioning!!

Complimentary breakfast is good and well prepared. Anyone is ready and available to help with any questions. Rooms are very well cleaned and up to date.

Room was clean location pretty decent, only $7 for a Lyft to King St. Breakfast was delicious, bed was comfy. The only complaint is parking and broken elevator but sh** happens let's face it parking in Charleston in general is the worst. The staff were all amazing! I was worried because of some reviews but it was worth what you pay. Oh, we never heard the construction around us and Publix is a 2 minute walk from hotel.

Always nice consistent safe place to stay when traveling! Trustworthy while on the road!

I am only giving one star because I have to. Everything was AWFUL! I got bed bugs, housekeeping did not come to our room the first day and the shower curtain had mold. The managers were not apologetic, very rude, and unresponsive. I have been told 5 times someone would reach out to me but NO ONE has - i have emailed them too. They told me they couldn't check me out until an exterminator came (????) but there were clearly bites visible all over my legs. I am disappointed in them. I have family in the IHG business and they have told me the way this has been handled was very POOR. PLEASE LISTEN TO ALL THE BAD REVIEWS!!

A little run down for the price paid. AC did not work both nights I was there. Free breakfast is always a plus.

The hotel was very nice. The location was convenient to downtown. We had originally booked 2 days and the reservation said no cancellation without losing deposit. Our circumstances changed and we were only able to stay one night. They changed our reservation to one night without us losing our deposit. The lady that worked the night of January 3rd was very helpful and friendly. She had a very positive attitude. The breakfast was also good, lots of variety. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Hotel is right next to MUSC. The area isn't really the greatest but the rooms are clean and hotel is nice. Parking is free. Internet is averaging about 5mbs, which is good enough to stream TV.

I thought it was going to be a lot better. To start, the machine to make pancakes didn't work, the toaster stopped working, just one brick of milk in the fridge and the staff didn't help at all, they were just sticking around and you could clearly see they didn't really wanted to work. The floor of the room was vibrating and so we had to change room. In the other room there was a construction which started at 8 a.m.

This place was so awful. Not only did we have dirt and crumbs ALL OVER the floor in the entire room and a used a-tip but we also met 2 separate guests that also had dirty rooms and had to be moved. When we got to our new room, it smelled terrible so my husband went downstairs and said, "excuse me,miss, I'm sorry but-" and the front desk lady immediately said, '"its ok, do you need a refund?" She was super nice about it but being that she came outfront with that tells me it happens all the time which is terrible. I have a reservation at another location tonight and I'm scared.

The room was very clean cool and right off the highway, so easy to find!
The staff are Super friendly and we just loved them!!

Service desk lady just seemed to be out of her job, smelled like cigarettes even though it was smoke free, breakfast was just horrible, and not enough parking space

All of my specialty doctors are in Charleston at MUSC. I unfortunately have Crohn's Disease, RA, and MS so me and my better half make a day out of it! Upon checking in, everything was super clean. I mean down to the point of them having a young man clean the up and down buttons on the outside of the elevator, as well as all the buttons on the inside. Nice touch! The lady at the front desk Jazzy couldn't have been more friendly and professional. She was fantastic and even called us by our name on the way out which is something I like when staying anywhere. She new I was there for a doctor's appointment and asked if she could do anything for us to make it more enjoyable for our stay like asking if she wanted to put us on the top floor so no one would be above. Just small things add up you know?? At any rate... great affordable place to stay and overall great experience!!

The hotel was standard. The staff was friendly. The rooms were clean. The view was not great, since there's construction and orange cones all around..but that's obviously not the hotel's fault. The parking lot was a bit of a flooded, unpaved, sinky mess that made you wonder if you were about to bog down. Our visit was pleasant, though.

First they put me in a room behind the elevator when I specifically asked to be away from elevator.



The bathroom had hair all over the floor. The next day, I noticed the cleaning person had fingernails longer than most people's fingers. My wife cleans houses as a business and I can tell you that you can't properly clean with nails that long.

Room was quiet but extremely dated. Power outlets are very loose and in desperate need of repair.

No laundry bag in closet.

Front desk staff was very friendly.

The hotel's covid policy is quite wishy-washy. Some people have to wear a mask to get coffee, others don't. We are a family of 9 and we sat in the lounge and ate dinner together but they wouldn't us sit together for breakfast. The rooms smelled funny. The ac unit is dirty and very loud. Our slider didn't shut properly so we got to hear everything going on outside all night! The walls are paper thin, so when the outside noise was low we could hear from each room around us and the shower leaked continuously.

We travel a lot and it won't be to a Holiday in again.

Despite the terrible traffic due to the construction that engulfs the entire block, the staff has handled my stay with absolute class. I have spent the last 13 years traveling and it's rare to find a hotel that is managed as well as this place. It caught me completely off guard. They have gone above and beyond to ensure my stay has been pleasant. And my room was actually clean!

The hotel is within walking distance of the historic district and many beautiful walks along the water! Very nice and clean.

Very competitive prices for the are. A little off the beaten path. So far only one Uber driver had difficulty finding. The hotel is clean and fresh. Holiday inn express at its best.

It was fine, the construction next door makes it a pain, but the staff were outstanding.

They offer a wonderful selection for breakfast. And did I mention that breakfast is free? You have a good sized mini fridge microwave and a Keurig coffee maker in your room! Way awesome and the beds are comfortable and the staff have been extremely nice

Less than one star!!! Front desk staff was rude and unaccommodating. Room had no hot water. There was no offer to switch rooms or any kind of solution, just that they were "dealing with it". On top of that, this place was absolutely filthy. Hand sanitizing stations were empty. The window in our room was so cloudy, you couldn't see out. There was garbage floating in the pool and throughout the grounds. And, as a pet-friendly hotel, there was dog sh*t in the landscaping in the front of the hotel. Pay the extra few dollars to stay at a better hotel, there are plenty of others to choose from in that area.

Wi-Fi was shoddy, parking was not the most convenient, and the AC was weird. Other wise, pretty great experience! Would definitely recommend if you plan on spending a lot of time downtown.

Place is a joke.. Nice view of a dumpster from window.. We payed $ and cant even park at the hotel.Breakfast was bland at best. Dont waste your money. Never again.

The hotel was nice. Hot breakfast included in stay. Construction right across street. Started early in the morning.

Not a bad little motel. Nice ,clean, But air conditioner was a bit loud and the toilet seemed like the valve was hanging up . The morning breakfast was a nice surprise.

A lot of construction in the area in June 2017. Made it hard to get into parking area. And parking does not accommodate large vehicle/ trailer combinations. Nice room, bed and breakfast. Update! Beware of thieves in the area! They stole over $400 of tools and equipment from our vehicle which was in a designated parking area behind the building.

Lovely stay! The only issue I had with it was that the lobby and hallways smelled a little strange. The staff was very helpful and sweet. Breakfast was delicious and had great variety. They also gave me a complementary razor and cream since I forgot mine at home. Beds were comfortable, shower was great, and everything was clean. 9/10 would recommend!

This a fantastic pet friendly hotel in downtown Charleston. It's a short distance from everything and they really genuinely care about you and your pets. If you pets are family like my dogs are this is the place to go.

So much about this hotel would ve made more sense for half the price. Dingy rooms, NOT clean (mine still had stains in the carpet from recent guests), my room had no soap, toilet paper was more like actual paper, and the AC unit in my room at least was broken. So I spent >$100 to stay in a mediocre room with minimal supplies, and it was too hot to sleep. It was a relief to get back to my car in the morning which was both cleaned and had working AC.

I am an IHG Rewards Club Member & this is absolutely the worst Hotel to book with. We had booked reservations a month in advance. When I went to check in at 6:00p.m. I was told that our room was not ready yet (which check in time is 4:00p.m.). While coming in the front lobby doors, I noticed that the lobby was full of people waiting. Most of them stated had been waiting there for 2 hours already. The only thing we were being told is that they could not tell us when our room would be ready. There was not one manager on duty to help deal with whatever was going on as well. They only had 2 people at the desk with 2 lines that were backed up to the doors. Usually you can walk in a Holiday Inn Express and it smells and looks very clean...not here! You could smell the dog smell where they allow pets.. I DO NOT RECOMMEND staying at this hotel!

Ultimately it was a great stay. We were given a suite which was clean and I saw no mold damage as previous complaints. The staff there was overly friendly which I loved and the cleaning staff went above and beyond!

The location is 10 minutes from good bars and food and King Street. Free parking which is a plus and Ubers/lyfts that are in the area.

The hotel itself is not under construction but right next to it there is. The workers work on weekdays starting early.

Nice rooms and great free breakfast. Overall rating for this hotel is pretty good. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most expensive hotel I've been in, I will give this one a 6.7.

The only complain I have is that the hallways are unpleasantly warm. Also, the hallways' appearance looked cheap. Service rooms' doors look dinged, smudge and damaged. Also the hallways' wall paint and wallpaper looked worn and dirty. Definetly needs redoing in the near future.

Another good thing I liked is that their breakfast are the best complimentary hotel breakfast I have had. They served real cooked bacon, sausage and pancakes. I've been in bite where after your sausage cools down it turns into a murder weapon. They used REAL food in this hotel. Kudos for that.

I have had more amenities at a 69$ econo lodge. Especially for the money. The breakfast was great and for that I will give 2 stars. Otherwise it was probably the worst hotel I ve ever stayed in. Construction going on late at night and I would assume during the week early in the morning. You could book a Hilton hotel and be better off for the same amount of money. We almost left and found a new hotel within minutes of walking in. That s how bad it was!!!

It has a weird(unpleasant smell), construction is everywhere around it so it's hard to navigate to, vending machine was out of almost everything, internet is worst then dial up. Probably deserves a 1.5 or a 2 star, but for $185 a night there are way better hotels to stay at. I'd value this one at $75 or less a night.

The room was really clean and updated. The bed and pillows were nice and not like sleeping on concrete! The breakfast was great. Many options, hot and cold, and the staff kept replacing the food so it was fresh. There was construction of a new building going on next door, that was a little louder than I liked during the overnight hours, but that isn't always going to be a problem. As food businesses in walking distance, there isn't much. No convenience stores in walking distance, and only a McDonald's nearby.

Worst hotel staff experience ever. Every employee behind a counter were on their phone. The breakfast was horrible, salted scrambled eggs, turkey patties not breakfast patties and the pancake machine was broken. When I asked about it, I was treated like a pest. I had watery orange juice for breakfast and could not get out of there fast enough.

Clean, comfortable,affordable and convenient with a great staff.

Everything was fine we were at Medical University for testing. I am disabled and my wife checked us in and went to room and it was not cleaned, felt very uncomfortable with covid-19 on. My wife went to front desk and I must say front desk staff was wonderful. Immediately got us a new room and we're very apologetic and didn't know how it happened. Another positive was the attendant at the breakfast was very pleasant and did a wonderful job.

Attended a seminar at the hotel. It was a pleasant experience.
