Horrible customer service, no notice of delays, 2 hour late check in, but nothing to make up for it. Rude manager at front desk. Even though the problem was due to their own doing, we received no warning of the delay, no discount, no concessions, nothing. Won't be back

Why was it poor they ask? Long line, we waited in line for 45 minutes just to be told our room wasn t ready. They never called us to tell us room was ready . Staff wasn t in a rush. They offered to watch luggage and upon our return GAVE Us THE master key to the whole hotel! They did watch my stuff as I had an expensive instrument. The cleaning lady was the most helpful person here! Parking totally sucked ! I would give it a negative star if I could ! Try to book some place else!

Front staff and cleaning staff are great. Central to MUSC and VA.

Evacuated from Harvey in Houston then from Irma in Miami. Ended up in Charleston at Holiday Inn Express Charleston Downtown Ashley River, Charleston, SC on Spring Street. What an adventure.

Then came the remnants of Irma and flooded downtown Charleston, lost power, and no places for food.

David (GM) and staff (Rosie, Brian, Faith, Ms. Dee, and really the entire staff) never left us. They brought food in from their homes and fed all the guests and evacuees for several meals until the events were over.

They even rescued people from cars and never turned anyone away!

True, there might have been other choices of hotels but undoubtedly we were meant to come here. We will always remember the staff and the group of guests and evacuees who gathered as a family to overcome.

Please don't hesitate to select this location and come join the family!

The check in process was a joke we waited over 3 hours to get our room and apparently everyone else in the lobby . They had a shortage of housekeeping staff which was the issue for the long wait. The hotel is extremely outdated and needs serious remodeling. It s located in the middle of a construction zone with getting woken up to trucks at 3 in the morning . Breakfast was basic , the parking was ok , would not recommend or stay here ever again .

Pictured hotel is a rendering concept for the future hotel they are building behind the actual hotel. It's old, relatively clean, its ok. Wish we stayed somewhere in the historic district though. Ah well. It served its purpose for somewhere to sleep. A free shuttle/bus service (infront of another hotel) will take you downtown.

It started out great. The first two days they replaced everything while I was at work including cups, coffee, soaps, shampoos, towels, and Lenin's. The longer I stayed the less things got done. No more coffee, no more cups, soaps, shampoos and they didn't replace my coffee maker even though I left a note that it had broke. Had all this been done every day I would add a star. Not to mention my room smelled funny. My two colleagues, one Mexican and one black where treated slightly different and I feel like I got better service being that they both were placed in dog rooms even after stating they were allergic to both cats and dogs. They both had to change rooms. I am also sorry to Inform the public that the gentleman working the front desk our first evening there, was inclined to share his opinion about two gay transgendered guests that we're trying to get a room for one night. I won't go into details but it was sad that an employee who deals with people on a regular basis can find it ok to chat about such things to customers. Yet the breakfast hit the spot all 5 mornings I was there! I feel like maybe Holiday Inn Express should do some employee spying here in Charleston South Carolina.

Had some issues at check in with a written group, check in supposed to be 4pm, a lot of us didn't get a room until 5pm or afterward. Little frustrating when we all had a 5:30pm appointment downtown.

This place is terrible!!! Absolutely overpriced for the room that we received, dirty windows, dirty bathroom, cigarette butts all over the balcony when there is no smoking allowed , very small room, ect. I would not recommend staying here at all...

I recommend not staying at this hotel. Very rude staff. Parking is a mess. I was awoken at 4am by construction vehicles next door. This is the last time I stay at holiday inn express. When I called and booked the room I was told one rate and when I got to the hotel they told me it would be a different ( higher) rate. I had a similar issue at another holiday inn in Charlotte NC about a week ago.

Dusty rooms, stained bench in room, musty odor throughout hallways, LOUD construction and just overall not worth what they charge. We are from Charleston and will never stay here again. Very disappointed.

Great breakfast Clean room front desk gave me double instead of a king in which I saw available online besides that morning staff made up for the lady that night!!!!!!! But I enjoyed my stay!!!

Spent three days at the HIE Downtown-Ashley River and was very disappointed. On two consecutive days after being gone from our room for 8 hours the room still was not made up. Fixtures in the bathroom were falling off the wall in the shower; bars on shower doors were very loose; sliding doors to balcony were dirty; barely opened and in very poor condition. Housekeeping neglected to replace glasses in our room everyday. Overall I would say the hotel needs a major upgrade.

The staff was amazing , The breakfast was phenomenal and the room was top notch and the guest were very friendly Over all was the best anniversary that I have had thus far .I give it a solid 10 oh did i mention the gym which was also very very nice to work out in .

This hotel is extremely old and out dated the pictures are from its hay days of yesteryears! Rooms are not clean, AC units have piled up dust in filters with urine smells and black mold spots in vents. Bocony window doors have been sealed closed but some remain partially open. They try and make it look like the hotel has gone thru a renovation process but it was very poorly done.

The hotel front desk ask for your credit card for incidentals 10.00 hold and will upon check out charge your card a completely different large amount without any written or verbal authorization (i.e: my card was authorized for a 10.00 incidental hold and upon checkout was charged 504.21 for my stay that was paid for by the company I'm employed with. If I hadn't looked at my credit card statement I would not have known till it was to late.

At all cost, PLEASE DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF USING THIS POORLY RUN independently own Holiday Inn Express!!!!!

My husband and I stayed here for one night. Our experience was just "ok". The rooms are very tiny with the King rooms overlooking the McDonalds. Lovely. The pool was sort of odd and not somewhere that I felt I could relax and hang out. There were also tiny ants crawling all over the desk in our room. I felt the cleaning of the room was just mediocre. A positive is that we could drive to the heart of downtown within 5 minutes. The free breakfast and 24 hour coffee is a nice touch. The staff was also very friendly. Overall, would probably not stay here again.

Rooms are smaller than your average HIE.

Rooms are smaller than your average HIE.
Under staffed for the size.
One person at front desk, on a (business) phone call while I waited to check in.
Small problem with the first room necessitated moving. Called front desk, no one answered. Walked down, it was professionally handled by the lady at the desk.
Second room is fine. Though oddly enough it looks like someone was sitting on the beds.
Parked the car and came in a side door. Hallway hvac condensates drip on whomever is using that door.
Bathroom ceiling is very low, maybe 6'6"? I am 5'11", can touch the ceiling w my elbow, and do not fit under the shower head, which is set close to the ceiling.... Main room ceiling is more 'normal'.

I am currently staying at the Holiday Inn in Ashley River. My husband and I are celebrating our 2nd Wedding Anniversary. When my husband booked the hotel, the description stated river view. We can barely see the river. If my husband hadn't requested a room as far to the top as we could go, we would never have been able to see a river that is clearly out beyond some tees. The second thing we noticed was the inadequate amount of parking made available for guests. There is definitely not enough parking for the amount of guests the hotel can accommodate. When we leave we always are concerned about having a place to park when we return. The third thing we noticed is the safe in our room does not work. It appears to be missing bateries that would allow the combination part of the safe to work, My husband contacted the front desk who assured us that someone would be up to fix it. Hasn't happened yet. The finally thing we noticed which is inexcusable is our room door left opened. We returned to our room after being gone for several hours to fnd that it had been left propped open with the door safety latch. Anyone could have walked in our room and took our belongings. My husband, once again, contacted the front desk only to be told "Oh, i guess the cleaning people forgot to close it." She just nonchallantly apologized as if it was no big deal. This is definitely a problem for us. We travel several times through out the year and often stay in hotels. This chain of hotels will definitely be scratched off our list.

My check in time was at 3pm, it s currently 6 pm. I have been waiting 3 hours for my reservation to be ready. There are 13 other guests in the lobby waiting for rooms and a long line of guests that are quickly going to find out there reservations are not ready. There is one employee working the desk and everything here seems to be far beyond disorganized disorganized.

We arrived on Monday and the refrigerator in our room wasn't working. They very graciously replaced it. The room was outdated and we only had one towel in our room ( we had 4 ppl). They did give us more when I asked for some but you'd think there would have been more already in the room. They don't check the rooms very well to clean them bc we found a water bottle behind the nightstand that didn't belong to us. Definitely not enough parking. The main reason I'm giving it one star is because my wife woke up Wednesday morning with bites all over her arm that were not there when she went to sleep Tuesday night. Our first thought was bed bugs but we weren't sure until a medical professional confirmed today that that was indeed what they were (we arrived back home yesterday). Clearly there is a lack of housekeeping standards. We now wish we would have stayed at Hyatt House like we originally planned.

I stayed here for my wedding. The parking lot is a mess, construction woke me up, Dogs barking, Pot filled the hall on the 2nd foor, the pancake machine was possessed, and half the light fixtures in our room were cracked or broken... The maintenance or someone did a spot check of the mirrors and microwave without calling first, and with the do not disturb sign on the door. It was so dusty in the parking lot that it made my wedding dress a mess before we even got to the beach. The back door which is the main entrance from the majority parking has 7 to 10 air conditioners stacked right above it and drips on you everytime you enter. It was a hassle the whole time from check in to check out, and I would give it a 0.5 if I could. The only saving grace in the entire experience were the pillows. The desk clerks made excuses... "We just got bought out", "it says construction on thw corporate site", and "we have to charge you money on top of the room just to check you in?) Are you serious? This hotel made what should have been the happiest time miserable... We go to the beach every year, and will not be staying at this hotel on our 4th trip in a row to Foley Beach... back to the resorts where at least there is a view other than a parking structure and dirt.

The room was clean and staff cleaned room early in the morning. The front desk staff was not very friendly and helpful. The pool was closed during our visit for no apparent reason. The breakfast was limited in selection considering similar hotels with such free breakfasts.
There is a big construction next door. Very loud and start at 7:30 in the morning. Not possible to sleep unless you are a heavy sleeper. The hotel management knowingly gave rooms on the construction side of the hotel even though they have plenty of empty rooms on the silent side. The parking was limited and the parking lot we had to use was muddy.
Overall skip this hotel until 2020 if possible.

It served its purpose. I would choose something more upscale if I had to stay more than one night or if I was vacationing in Charleston. I admit my views could be skewed by the foolishness which is Charleston's humidity. In comparison the price was good, and included a refrigerator with freezer and microwave. Staff was friendly and prompt with service delivery.

We were greated by Carrol in the evening, she was very helpful and kind, suggested a great restaurant witch turned out to be fantastic! Later at checkout, Brian was most helpful with a special need. Room was very nice and my breakfast the morning g of checkout was awesome. I plan on coming back in the spring and I will be staying here, Highly Recommend!

Found this place when our daughter had to go to musc for what we thought would be a couple days. We had to extend our stay and this whole staff is AMAZING. Rooms are nice and clean and I cant say enough about the staff!! Amazing , caring people and will definitely be staying here again.

We had a lovely time at this hotel. Carmen, Fran and Alisha were always helpful in the mornings. They greeted everyone with a smile and a sense of humor. Carmen asssisted us with pancakes and made us laugh. Their friendliness was contagious. Carol at the front desk made us feel welcome and even called when we arrived at the room to make sure everything was ok. Loved our stay and will definitely recommend this hotel to others, especially if they want to bring their fur babies. Thank you so much for a great stay and thanks to these ladies for making us feel welcome.

Disappointed. Booked a room that was supposed to have a river view, "None of our rooms have a river view" was the response when we were checking in. Then remove that from your description!! We usually stay at Holiday Inn Express for a few reasons, one is the free breakfast and the biscuits and gravy. Not here. 2 elevators only 1 was working. Won't be staying here again.

Stayed last week, we booked back in August for November and upon arrival they didn't have the room we booked they gave it away. We had booked for a king and they tried to push us into a room which had two queens. Not what we had paid for in advance with no way to refund. My husband's will is probably why they
even 'found' a room with a king. It wasn't anything like what we saw in the photos still when we had booked. Room was outdated and dirty. I would never stay here again. Look elsewhere. This hotel should be on hotel impossible.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The beds were very comfortable. The breakfasts had a good assortment including fresh hot foods and the large fitness room was impressive with updated equipment. The location was chosen due to proximity to marathon event expo and start. With a little help from uber, the location was good for people who enjoyed walking around the city.

Stayed here for two nights. Desk and maintenance staff were really nice (didn't need maintenance but met them in the elevator). The room was clean, the atmosphere was very friendly and accommodating. The free breakfast was simple but not lacking and the coffee was an all day option and was good coffee. Overall, I would definitely recommend to a friend and would return again.

The staff at this hotel was absolutely sensational. The room was clean. Management, Miss Julia, was very attentive to our needs. This should be a five star rated hotel. As good as we ve ever seen.

The hotel was more humid than a rainforest. Our clothes, hats, sheets, and moods were all damp After the first few hours in the hotel. Locked balcony doors were not what was advertised. Above all, it was a poor stay and will not be back.

Breakfast was good. Room was old fashioned with minimal lighting. Bathroom had only 1 grab bar and no towel racks. There was a bit of mold. Only 1 of the 2 elevators worked. But---major construction on one side of the hotel went on day an night, VERY loud noises---whistles, bells, motors, engines, pounding, prevented any sleep at all at night. Management sent up ear plugs !!!! What an insult to guests on that side of hotel. Management had no excuse. If you must stay there be sure to at least stay on side where there is no construction

The Holiday Inn Express is one of my preferred places to stay. They have decent, low rates, good customer service and nice facilities. This time that we stayed was less than spectacular. My family and I got there ahead of check-in time, I figured we would so I had gone ahead and called them and asked if we could check-in earlier, They said "Sure, If a room is available." Thankfully, a room was. Problem was the card keys they gave us would not work for the room they told us. An incredibly nice and amazing maid, saw I was having trouble and let us into the room and told us what we needed it to do. When we got in, it was not what we had booked. The maid called the front desk for us ( So we didn't have to walk all the way back downstairs) and she found out he had given us the wrong room number. Finally, after we got all situated we left for our play and to go enjoy the town. When we got back we found the door to our room ajar. After carefully checking our stuff and finding nothing missing, we just thought maybe one of us did not close the door all the way. It wasn't until later that night, We found out that the door would not close properly. It could be opened from the outside without a keycard, if it was not slammed and pulled shut. when my grandmother went down stairs to talk to the guy at the front desk he acted like nothing was wrong and gave us no solution or help. Needless to say we 'slept' with the deadbolt on and a chair up against the door that night. The following morning after we finally got the door to shut, we went and had breakfast only to return and find that our keycards no longer worked. Thankfully, another incredibly helpful maid let us into our room. Basically,

Customer service = 2 stars (The maids were the real heroes here, taking time to help me and my grandmother more than the front desk)
Breakfast = 4 stars (A good selection of food, but they did not have a waffle maker. Did have a pancake maker, though)
Cleanliness = 5 stars (The rooms were clean, well stocked and put together. Thank you, lovely maids again)
Rates = 3 stars (Compared to other hotels in the area it is decent)

Overall, The entire situation did not turn us off to staying there again, but it diffidently will not be anytime soon or in the near future.

I am very surprised to see the reviews of this place fall bellow four stars. This place has a nice lobby and pool and the staff was great as well. They are also more friendly when it comes to later checkout times. I think maybe some of the ratings will increase once the construction is finished in the area.

This place was nasty! Mold all over room and ceiling, rude person at check in, and they even charged me after I had already paid Travelocity! Had to chase them to prove I stayed there as they told Travelocity I never showed. Jerks! I even need a new alignment on my car as their parking lot sucks too! Stay anywhere else - not here!
