This place makes me feel in Paris, at Notre Dame more precisely. So you do not need to describe the beauty of the book.
This is obviously a place to visit during your stay, but it is a monument that deserves. If you do not come by bus or VTC, you will have to climb 4 to 5 blocks of rather steep streets. Avoid with children or elderly people.

It's right on the cable car line, so it's easy to jump off tour the cathedral, and get back on the cable car an hour later. I've seen a lot of churches all over the world, but this Cathedral is one of the biggest churches I have ever seen in my life! Totally a must see.

As the third largest Episcopal (Anglican) cathedra...

As the third largest Episcopal (Anglican) cathedral in the United States, Grace Cathedral is a marvelous crown atop Nob Hill. Compared to counterparts in Europe, Grace Cathedral is rather small and made of modest materials. What makes the cathedral great are the building s geometry and the stained glass windows by the Connick studio in Boston, Willet studio in Philadelphia, and Loire studio in Chartres, France.

Liturgically and musically, Grace Cathedral offers the best of the Anglican tradition in an unlikely location. Visitors and seekers from other liturgical Christian traditions will easily recognize the structure of the liturgy. Others, who are suspicious of religious institutions (probably for good reason) will find a community that welcomes questions and is unperturbed by doubt.

Full disclosure - I have been a member of the Grace Cathedral community since the mid 1990s; therefore, my review review is somewhat biased. Nevertheless, as an individual who craves intelligent discourse, anonymity (sometimes), welcome (sometimes), and beauty, Grace Cathedral is a welcome refuge.

Grace Cathedral really reinvented the soul, depth and love of community in an amazingly historic place. I continue to be amazed at the events they put on. They have made the beauty of community and love modern with the collection of events they take on. I recently attended a sound meditation at Grace Cathedral simply amazing.

The Lord please praise Peets!

The Lord please praise Peets!

(read this 5x super fast)

Watch your mouth, Sebastian. Be quiet, humble, and line up for your coffee.

Sunday, 9.50am. Grace Cathedral, Nob Hill. The church goers guide the Thirsty Coffee Enthusiast, who occasionally dresses as a priest for Halloween, to the basement of the church. I'm passing two ladies sitting in a corner, studying the bible.

I'm preparing myself mentally to confess my latest sins and praise the Lord, but the girl at the coffee counter couldn't be bothered.

Fine. One large house coffee, please.

Sitting on a wooden bench and sipping on my Peets coffee I'm thinking that this little hidden-in-the-Cathedrals-basement coffee shop is a heavenly gift. And maybe I should reconsider my costume choice for Halloween this year. It's about time.

Amen.

The Episcopal cathedral church of the Diocese of C...

The Episcopal cathedral church of the Diocese of California, that is the seat of the bishop, built 1928-1964 in the historic French Gothic as one of the largest Episcopalian cathedrals in the US. A great place to see French Gothic ecclesiastical architecture, and much precious art in its intended setting, ranging from Gothic to contemporary. A set of running murals along the sides of the nave represent the story of San Francisco, from the first Anglican mass at Drake's landing, and the coming of the Franciscan missionaries to the founding of the UN. The only oddity is that its facade holds niches designed to hold statuary images of saints, but the bishop at the time of its completion, James Pike, opted to leave the niches empty. Two years later this bishop was censured and resigned, and after his son killed himself he turned to clairvoyanice and spiritualism. He had also been twice divorced, and was an alcoholic. In any case, the older stained glass windows are beautiful and cast beautiful light into the nave. The main doors were cast from Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise at the Florence Baptistry.
For those who enjoy choral music, this is probably the place to go in the Bay Area. They still have a choir of men and boys who sing evensong (part of vespers) once a week during the school term. And they host choral concerts from the likes of Westminster Abbey, Kings College, etc. Some of the canons still employ the melodious Queen's English.
They also have a floor labyrinth traced from Chartres Cathedral. An adjacent quadrangle which houses a fine k-8 boys school. In the crypt there is a cafe and gift shop. Unfortunately there was a beautiful, limestone chapter house fronting the facade that they decided to tear down in order to build a massive and quite ugly staircase all along the facade.

An historic cathedral with two labyrinths, chapels...

An historic cathedral with two labyrinths, chapels, murals, stained glass, organ and a host of programs, Grace Cathedral is a functioning parish in the Episcopalian denomination. In addition to daily masses, the offerings for the public include music concerts, labyrinth walks, meditation and prayer groups and more. The architecture is spectacular and well worth a visit to this grand treasure.

Love the overwhelming architecture. Gotta find and do the courtside maze(Taylor St side I recall). Suppose to be another one, too. Will do it sometime. Where Steve McQueen met Simon Oakland at mass in the legendary movie: "Bullit".

The shear size if it combined with the silence was amazing. There is a lot of history and art contained with in these walls. They hold a Eucharist service here daily at 12:10pm. Also they hold a worship service as well daily. Admission is free though their is a suggested donation of $10.

I think my favorite part is just the space that is created within these walls. Space to just be.

The design and decor of this church is absolutely magnificent. I was there when there was no service in session and found the stroll through its aisles and corridors a nice, peaceful experience. I can't say I agree with the actual ideals of the church, but visually it is good.

I've only visited this place from the outside because usually I am on a bicycle when I'm in this area. There are really a lot of very nice hill climbs that one can summit to reach this beautiful cathedral. One day, I'll have to bring a bike lock and visit the inside.
