I am currently at The Good Shepherd. At a homeless shelter, STAFF HOLDS ALL THE CARDS. Regardless of whatever problem may arise between resident & resident or resident & staff, a person should be able to 'speak there mind' without fear of being kicked into the streets, as long as what you say is done in a respectful manner.
TO ME, I feel that I am only allowed to go SO FAR to defend myself. Were I to defend myself, and start to get the better of the 'debate' (i.e. the facts support MY position)...you'd rarely hear from the current staff "You know, you're right. I didn't realize such-and-such." THEY SURE WOULDN'T LIKE BEING WRONG.
Being forced to leave the shelter should be a LAST RESORT, and rarely used (if ever). Being a physical threat to others, using or dealing drugs, being UNRULY AND UNREASONABLE....this can and should all be dealt with by local law enforcement. If you are not capable of building basic fundamental relationships, perhaps another line of work would suit you better.
A staff member who can't stand a resident who doesn't 'tow the line' is quite frankly in the wrong business, and CERTAINLY shouldn't have the power to boot somebody out over 1st time minor infractions. There should be a RESIDENT ADVOCATE for appeals....not staff. We entered a shelter; we didn't join the Marines. Involuntarily committed MENTAL PATIENTS in N.C. have more rights than most shelter residents.
FOR THE RECORD, I HAVE NOT HAD A SINGLE RUN IN WITH STAFF.....I'm just a bit worried if I do.............
