I love this place I love the sandwich and the people that put it together it's also a great place to dine in

A historic restaurant once named "Best sandwich shop in America" requires a visit even if the title was from Zagat in 2012. Fontano is quite the experience and the constant flow of locals ordering subs proves Fontano still has it.

Fontano Subs is a deli in Little Italy and dates back to the 1960s. The deli is in the way way back with drinks, dessert, and munchies in the front of the store. They keep it simple and the handful of staff behind the deli counter keep the flow going. Know your order before walking up. I recommend their Blockbuster full of different deli meat. The deli person will walk you through the rest. They start at 6 inches and go up to 3 feet. 12 inches was perfect for me.

The cashier takes credit and there is plenty of tables to enjoy your sandwich. The food itself is good. Best in the USA? I've had better, but it's still good!

I grew up on these sandwiches and could never say a bad thing about them. They are THE ABSOLUTE BEST! And they have some of the best peanut butter cookies. Great customer service beautiful personalities just everything.

I was walking to the corner where this store is located and tried to decide if I should eat here or across the street. I started walking to the other place and a car stopped and rolled down it's windows and said we were making a huge mistake. I'm so glad that guy stopped us because the sandwiches here are so amazing! They mean business here.

We are in town from Portland, OR. There is nothing like this where we live. I had the combo sub with beef and sausage. Was the best sandwich I have ever had! We meet the owner who was amazing, nice, welcoming, helpful and very ready to share the amazing Chicago experience with us! I will be back 100%

Back in the early 90's I would frequent this establishment at least four times a week. But after I graduated from UIC and moved from the area my visits decreased. However recently due to a lack of satisfaction with chain subway sandwich shops I have returned and will attend more frequently. This place serves the finest Italian Special Sub in the world. The meatball sub is wonderful. One can never go unsatisfied here. All the ingredients are fresh and of high quality. The small Italian grocery store offers many specialty items that are difficult to locate. The store is clean and bright. The pricing of the deli items is very reasonable considering the quality you are receiving. Attend!!!!!!!!!!

Great subs here. Both hot and cold. Ordering here can be a little intimidating at first but the staff is very friendly and will walk you through it.

I don't know how to think of the place when I walk in. It might be more expensive than subway, but this is my favorite place to go grab something for lunch.

Fontanos is a neighborhood staple. You will always get solid quality and a nice atmosphere. Don't forget to try the pot roast when it's available!!!! I also like they offer a number of different sizes for the sandwiches.

These have got to be the best tasting and fulfilling subs I ever tasted in Chicago! My family and I drive all the way from Gurnee,IL just to have these great tasting subs! The people that run it are awesome,friendly , and make the best subs ever. Did I mention those cookies they sell!? To die for! This is a must have 5 star's on our family list! YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY YOU CAME.

By far the best sub sandwiches I've every had. Only by accident walked in there years ago when working at UIC to grab something to drink and a bag of chips. Saw the deli and that was all she wrote. Go there everytime I'm on that campus no doubt.

Farther introduced me to this place as a kid. 25 years later, still the best sub shop in the city.

The Italian beef there was really good, pretty good prices. The experience was definitely different compared to other restaurants. At Fontano's you order over a deli counter, and they make your sandwich there on the spot. I'll definitely be coming back to try some of their other subs.

The Italian subs are phenomenal! Abel treats his first time guests like family with laughs and much positive hospitality. Their house giardinera is divine for the subs. Next up, a visit for the sausage and peppers.

This is a great place to have the best subs in the area. Service is friendly and nice.

Prices are a little high for the sandwhich that you get. The sandwhiches are all very delicious but for an 8" sub I have to pay over $7 and it doesn't include anything extra to make it worth more money. I could go to subway, get a 12" sub for $6. The food is still good though, I would recommend this place for a quick bite.

Glad they're one of lucky few restaurants open on Michigan. Old favorite. Sandwiches are a home run. Deep dish pizza is great too. Big lines for lunch, call ahead to save 5mins.

They have best itailian sub sandwiches I have ever eaten. The wiseguy with hot giardinieri is my perosnal favorite.

Ordered a Pepperoni deep dish and it had one - ONE - piece of pepperoni on the whole slice.

Amazing subs. Superior to most any other place. The cold cut subs are great with high quality Italian meats. The hot subs (e.g. meatball or Italian sausage) are very good as well. Family run business old school place. The giardiniera is on point. There is even a small Italian grocery inside. Nothing negative to report. You are not really a UIC student if you never eat at Fontano's.

Subs are so good. I even bought a jar of their mild peppers because I want them on every sandwich I have at home.

Also, the meatballs were great. They are big, yet moist and flavorful.

Everyone on staff was friendly and fun. If you are near Little Italy you have to visit.
