I ordered the Italian beef with provolone and hot giardanerra and it was absolutely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Being a student at UIC, they offer a 10% discount which made this place one of my favorite places to go for a bite in the area. For an 8 inch Italian beef with the said ingredients it was only $7.61, and that's a great deal because I have paid more for ones that were not very good or mediocre at best. I absolutely will be coming back. Definitely a hidden gem!!

Meat was nasty and thw onions were chopped sub sandwiches have sliced onions

Best pot roast on Thursday. My husband says he's never had a better sandwich.

Old school Italian deli and sandwiches! The owner still sits up front. You can get freshly made chocolate chip cookies at the checkout. They also sell homemade pasta and sauce.

Great Mom and Pop type place. Old fashioned Italian Sub. By old fashioned I mean real meat i.e. Italian hams. You won't be disappointed.

I TRAVEL FROM RIVERDALE JUST TO GET IT, I PICK ANYTHING IT'S ALL GOOD. I GREW UP ON THEIR FOOD & YOU KNOW SOME PLACES CHANGE AFTER THE YEARS BUT NOT FONTANO'S ON POLK STREET. VERY DELICIOUS

I am a student at University of Illinois at chicago. By far my favorite sandwich place of all time. I don't know what the secret is but their sandwiches are simply better than any other sandwich out there. Family owned and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. My favorite is the Blockbuster!

An institution in Little Italy with a well deserved reputation. The quality and the freshness of their food is AMAZING. Love the subs but the meatball sandwiches are Phenomenal as well.

Sandwiches are always excellent, especially like the pot roast & meatball.

Recommendations: Marinated Chicken Breast Sandwich, Blockbuster Sandwich and the Tuna Sandwich.

The subs are awesome. I went to UIC 2000-2005 and this was my favorite place to eat at. I grabbed some subs from there within the past year and while still awesome, they aren't as great as they used to be. I recall that they would pile in so much meat it woudl fill the bread up and the veggies would be on top falling off. Eating the sub you'd literally have to scoop up veggies with one hand to eat it at the same time as the bread/meat. They pilled on tons of meat. More recently it seems it's not anywhere near as much.

Still they have great tasting subs and I'd recommend them.

I was asked today how long has it been that I been buying Subs at Fontanos since I was Junior in Highschool, that was almost 40 years ago and it's food is just as great as it was back then! Highly recommend you try a Sub and their Specials!!!

They never disappoint with the quality of food or customer service. All the cold subs are excellent, but be sure to also give the hot food a chance. Great Italian beef and meatball sandwiches, along with very good homemade soup. Don't forget the cannoli for dessert!

Fantastic place, quick counter-serve deli with great sandwiches and a busy interior. Pretty cheap for how good the food is. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area.

My family & I have been coming here for years! Obviously, because we love their mouthwatering subs that contain the best cured meats & cheeses. The subs are simple, but taste so special.

I'm relatively new to town, but it's easy to see why Fontano's consistently ranks among the best subs in Chicago. So deliciously satisfying, good service, and prices that won't sour your tastebuds. I admit I wasn't able to really tell the difference between the Blockbuster and the Wise Guy (their two most popular) outside of the cheese, but both were great - I liked them with everything plus oil and mild peppers. Next up: the meatball.

Subs here are a little pricey, but the quality and taste of ingredients definitely makes it worth it. Plus, they have a good variety of both cold and hot subs, and offered sizes from 6 inches up to (I think) 15 inches. Not only that but the guys making the sandwiches are courteous, quick, and listen well!

Probably the best sub sandwich I've ever had. Great meats and cheeses, fresh lettuce and tomato, and bread that really brings the whole sub together. I feel compelled to try every sandwich on the menu.
The service is fast and the staff are friendly. There are tables if you want to eat there or you could take your order to go. The subs will hold up if you can't eat them for a little while. All the parking in the immediate vicinity is permit parking, so you'll probably have to walk. There's some metered parking near one of the UIC lots (18a?) and the walk each way was 9 minutes or so maybe.
The only regret I have is that I didn't get a sandwich here sooner.

Best place to get a sub in the area. Cold deli or warm meatball, whatever your preference they'll have you covered. Great range of meats and addons. Their oil and peppers are always perfect. Personally I dont leave that UIC area without a blockbuster sandwich

Wiseguy is the way to go! Yum! Ask for the giardinera to be put on before the meat and cheese so that the oily peppers don't fall out on you and ruin your clothes with oil stains hahaaa. The spicy giardinera is totally delish, so put it on, just directly on the bread so it's contained below the meat lol

Never disappoints. Ingredients are always fresh and delicious. My favorite sub place in the loop. Also, it has a great location next to the park.

I've been a regular at Fontano's for many years. By far the best deli sub's. It is a family owned business and every member of the family I've met are wonderful.

A little whole in the wall joint that makes you a great sandwich. I've ate there approx 3 times and it's always been very delicious.

Love their subs. I go to UIC and this is the place to be for subs. I don't see why some people are complaining of the service. They're not a** kissers but they certainly aren't rude.
