The college is great at some aspect and the campus is huge but majority of the faculty and staff, particularly at the grove school of engineering, does not prepare students for careers as much as they should or doesn't prepare them at all. Overall, it's nearly not as good as it's overrated.
Great architecture and environment around the campus. There are many professors who are very good and fun to learn from. Many social groups and activities held in campus.
The best college!!! But one thing, why did you remove the heavy bags from the gym!?! Nooo!!!
Sometimes a little unorganized especially with people on admission hotline - the amount of times I call is the amount of different opinions and advice I get. So freshmen and transfers be sure to call a few times if you need something, cause one person may tell you to wait for a month or two and next day you call and they say you already missesed deadline or something. Otherwise professors and program are AWESOME. Best school at this price.
If you are a science major, don t go there. Unless you have friends that will give you past exam & notes. Reading the bio book won t help u with the exam.
There s no science tutoring , only math tutoring. The students become teachers by teaching the students.
The science teachers don t teach you how to pass the class. It s funny when students say I m taking 6 classes and and working at the same time and they are an biochemistry. These students have back up. If you are the Proffesor favorite they will pass you automatically even you struggle. And if u from the same country as the Proffesor.
When you go to a bio class I see the students relaxing , watching tv show , etc, is bc their friends give them everything bc they not struggling.
And if you are not the same race as them they won t share anything pass hw or exam.
But the math Proffesors are very good , shout out to jay jorgenson, Tsz Chung lo, jhevon smitt, Issa Salame, they can teach and care about their students.
What a gorgeous campus! Can't say enough about how beautiful the architecture is and how friendly everyone was around campus. It was such a delight to visit.
Good Engineering, Arch., Science and Liberal Arts College. Grove School of Engineering needs new labs and lots of upgrade. Professors are great but needs to extend their office hours. Civil Engineering is Kinda Tough to get through due to the complexity of the curriculum prerequisites, and limited seats/staff teaching certain 400 level courses. Overall a good school to attend.
I am from India and I am just here for Sir Michio kaku.
The college is the best sample of architecture and The teachers are really awesome
I love City College of New York. The campus is beautiful and the teachers are amazing. One of the best CUNY schools perfect if your interested in greek life look into Gamma Nu Delta Sorority Inc.
Nice school, some of the buildings are pretty old and the booths in the library stink sometimes. NEVER try to call their offices, they will never pick up or youll just get too frustrated trying to call. I was on hold for over an hour at one point. No this wasnt the first time I called they usually never pick up and only got help if you actually go to the office.
Science DEPT has some great professors. very competitive school. Engineering is too demanding and quality is dropping . food is really really bad. no sex life for many students . overall 70/100
In the heart of Harlem/Hamilton Heights is City College whose educational pedigree is second to none.
This is my secod year and every year they give me another reason to love ccny. i cme from a small school, so i tend be on the quite side, but the professors and staff are very supportive. i mean they know me by name in the library. i even picked up a second major. Shout out the Coriel Gaffney, best FIQWS teacher for english ever.
I thinking about to go back to school and apply for college
Really good professors and the science department staff are exceptional.
grove school of engineering sucks. Please stay away. Just an overrated school with average professors.
Plsss have more parking available for students. It's unfair that students are allowed night passes only, I would suggest investing in a parking garage...
Today is the first day of classes! I'm a transfer student from BMCC. I must say City College has a beautiful campus HOWEVER !!! They need to step they game up, it's 2017 where students have kids and full time jobs. Why isn't there online courses already?! Or a lot of afternoon classes?! The bathrooms and desk are ancient as well. I felt like I was back in elementary with the small little desks they had. Also I get that the staff isn't going to hold our hand throughout college which I don't expect that, but damn do your job! I had high expectations coming to City College and I am disappointed now I'm stuck here to finish. Hopefully during my time they step it up.
Nice safe area to take a break during an afternoon stroll.
A glorious Gothic architectural gem right here in Harlem!
if I could give them less than I start I would totally would. The staff is extremely rude and inefficient. They treat students as if they were stupid and never fully help them. The college overall is dysfunctional and disorganized. They use about 6 different accounts to check something as small as greats or financial Aid. The Financial Aid office release loans A YEAR LATER so the student need to pay out of pocket and the loan. When you call asking for information about how to return a loan they yelled at you ( Rosa ) and treat you as if you don't know what you are talking about. If I had the time for it I would totally report them for how badly I was treated there. They will do anything to keep you linked to the school even once you transfer out. WAS THERE FOR ONE SEMESTER AND IT WAS HORRIFYING, WORST DECISION OF MY LIFE. I AM SO HAPPY I AM FINALLY OUT AND WILL NEVER HAVE TO GO THERE AGAIN.
It is an option for him to continue studying who in New York
As a current student at this school I am majoring in Secondary Education and I must say that the people at the Secondary Education department are fantastic. Since I've enrolled they have kept me on track to graduate, even after I had my child they sent me information on what I should do to graduate on time. The campus is clean and beautiful to look at. The graduate education classes are small and you have time to talk to your professors.
Great campus, professors and cost! However office people do not know what they are doing.... and some of them are very unprofessional.
A beautiful, incredibly out-of-place visually and exactly in the right place atmospherically campus that gives a rest after a tour of Harlem. Check out a filming location Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums" was filmed around the corner at the house on the corner of Convent Ave & 144th Street.
My time at CCNY was one of the worst periods of my life. For STEM students: don't buy the hype! Save yourselves! The emperor has no clothes! In most cases, you will not be able to rely on your professors to help you digest the material and have to spend copious amounts of time studying on your own to make up for the deficit. There is absolutely no sense of community here because it's so cut-throat everyone is just trying to keep their heads above the water. For those wanting to major in engineering (including computer science), weigh your options heavily. It may be worth it to make a sacrifice to go to a better school within the SUNY system. The CUNY system is in serious, serious disarray. There are so, so few resources for students here, especially career-wise. For engineering undergraduates, the only companies that really recruit here are Con Edison and the MTA. For computer science, there exists a student-run career mentoring program called CCNY Code. The school itself provides little to no resources for computer science undergraduates. If you must come here, plan to have to take at least 5~6 years to graduate. Most students do not graduate on time, because, among other reasons, critical classes simply are not offered frequently enough. Begin applying for internships on your very first year so that you can become familiar with the process. Internships are absolutely critical for securing a job once you graduate; do not sleep on this! Lastly, if you wish to do well, look over the syllabus of the courses you're taking and begin studying far in advanced for that particular course. Like I said, you will not be able to rely on professors to help you, so the earlier you engage in self-study, the better off you will be.
Probably one of the best CUNY schools. It just gets it right. Everyone is friendly and they have a place for you to sleep if you are tired. The campus looks amazing. And although the Neightboor could be completely different from the campus. It's probably one of the most diverse schools in the country. And if deserves much thought to enroll here
Came here for a tour; beautiful Gothic architecture. Friendly atmosphere.
City College is a surprising gem in upper Manhattan. The campus is beautiful with marble and stone buildings that evoke an Ivy League campus rather than one tucked in Harlem. The school is also becoming increasingly excellent at design and the location means students are well rounded. The classrooms aren t overly modern with lots of brick walls, but the common areas and spaces are quite nice and feel a bit like a modern office.
Beautiful campus with amazing building architecture and public spaces.
My professors in Education and Science departments -- and many outside -- have included several of the best professors I've ever had. There ARE some problems with administration, which seems to be rife with politics, and with infrastructure (thre is always at leat one escalator under repair in the NAC building at any given time, and IT in unreliable in some areas); none of that matters much to me, but if you want an Ivy League experience, yeah, this is not the place for you. Otherwise, affordable quality education from a respected institution (YMMV, depending on your program), on a nice open campus a block from commercial stores and easily accesible by subway; I like it.
BMCC has a better campus and is in the best location. On top of that the way they handle issues are prompt and quick. When it comes to financial aid in City College, I see they try to handle things but I can't stand how counselors come out and speak to you over the counter about important private tax documents, etc. BMCC would have you speak to a counselor in private. College is about completing your degree, networking and making connections. Friends come and go and won't pay your bills. First impressions are last impressions especially for students who haven't even started classes and are already experiencing a horrible experience of even trying to fix the financial part of it. The staff does seem rude at times too but I think that's every college.
It is very much like a community college. It's very diverse, tolerant, peaceful and affordable for middle class students. In fact, many well-known people, such as Woody Allen and Colin Powell, have gone to this college. Plus, there's a lot of guidance involved for those whom wish to find their passions and study abroad. So, for those who wish to explore, this is definitely worth it.
This school is way overrated. There are few good aspects to it and many bad aspects to it. For one thing for the engineering department professors need to be re-evaluated and many professors in particular, Marchese, need to open their minds to the suggestions given by students to improve the class, rather than being so close minded and asking that same question over and over. There are some pretty nice professors who do their jobs properly and many that are bitter, but to their job good as well. The campus looks nice and staff is so-so.I can't wait to get out of this university
The blond haired lady at the front desk at international student office is rude with a terrible attitude. She has no idea what she is doing, for every question you ask she will run to the back to ask her supervisor. She has a very thick accent and half the time I had no idea what she was saying and on top of that if you ask her to repeat she makes a face at you after a long pause. It's a mess. The bathrooms at CCNY are always smelly and dirty, and a bunch of the staffs are as old as the college itself. There is no party or social life as you will be buried under massive study load.
Graduate of the college in 93. Had guns pulled on me twice by neighborhood thugs. Once was walking along convent ave. The second time was the day before graduation; black teen thugs from the campus high school ambushed me behind the science building and tried to rob me..
That being said, the college is pretty tough being a commuter college and you are largely on your own. one of the worse teachers I had was a statistics prof who once quipped the most popular sport is watching people hang themselves; basically you were on your own in that class and tutoring was non existent.
The best professor I had at the college was the late Dr Sharon Cosloy, molecular geneticist, who became head of the Biology department before she passed. She had a passion to teach, and to see others succeed. The other was Prof. Robert Gruskin, a microbiologist, excellent teacher who took the time to explain, and illuminate.
GHETTO very broken down and used......the only train nearby is the 1...and that is far away...
The City College of the City University of Newyork City, known as "CUNY" Newyork, is an iconic legendary, unique higher learning Institution & the first American public University system founded in the 1847, in the United States of America.

Pretty cool school. The Hoffman Lounge is the place to be! The Salads are very good and I enjoy eating them all day. Great people to meet there and the teachers arent that bad! Good facilities for everything you need! Go to CCNY! Beavers!
Worst college you can find in the city. Teens from the neighborhood can attack you for no reason. There are a lot of cases of assaults there. Just in the middle of Fall 2016 there were already 3 police reports of assault.
Professors are one of the worst. Advisor for Electrical Engineering said that there are only 10% of students graduate.
Good value in terms of education, but be warned you'll need to fight the administration to get anything done. Registering for classes, getting financial aid, etc will drain you so much because of management issues.
The Grove School Of Engineering is legit! It's difficult but there is a high quality of education. The school carries standards such as no calculators in the Math department and the campus/facilities are fairly good...pretty sure I'll be graduating debt free! Highly recommend this College to future Engineers.
Professors can't teach. the academic rigor is only fair for those who went to good enough high schools in which prepared them for college. The whole science department sucks. Every single science course has a class average in the D's or F's. You can't get a decent education. Its horrible. The staff is rude and sucks as well. Wow, what a way to make the poor, poorer
The architecture of The City College of New York is really attractive and picturesque.
Many of the bad reviews I've read come from students frustrated with the administration or their grades. CCNY is a public institution and doesn't have the same kind of funding as some of the top schools in NYC. So their administration is pretty understaffed and can only do so much for students. Anyone who has complained about quality of professors might think that other schools have better ones. It just doesn't work that way. Many of the research professors put their work before teaching. That is pretty much a universal thing throughout the U.S. it's their reputation they're staking, and their publications are what draws attention to the school. You're an undergraduate. You won't have the kind of attention from any professor as you would pursuing a masters or PhD. To them you're earning your stripes, and they tend to feel like they aren't there to spoon-feed. It's not ideal, but this is a very common attitude in academia. The courses are relatively rigorous. Not up to the standards of more reputable schools, but they come extremely close. You get what you pay for in terms of how well the grounds are kept. Hamilton Heights is a pretty trash-littered neighborhood. But compared to the sea of trash that is Broadway, CCNY looks like a palace. The campus itself is gorgeous, and the older buildings are breathtaking. I love grabbing a coffee in the quad where I can only see the older buildings. The area near the ASRC is also really well-kept. Large grassy fields (for NYC), and a view of Harlem.
I would take a 1 star review with a grain of salt. It's like reading a 1 or 5 star review on ratemyprofessor. They're usually just pissed off about getting a D or happy to get an A handout grade. If you put the work in, you'll be rewarded for it. Same as anything else. You're there to better yourself, so make the most of it. You won't find anything better for the price.
I can only speak for the science and engineering schools, but I think the school does a good job at preparing you for the work force/grad school. In compsci particularly, you will know if a professor is good if they push their own philosophy and get really deep into the theory. General science classes are huge and will not fail to disappoint. Math is tough, but there are resources available to students, tutoring, etc. I like taking MIT finals to see how they compare in the maths. There are definitely different areas of focus, but the level of expectation is roughly the same. Really if you want to go the extra mile, you will. You're not limited to the syllabus.
Go Beavers
CCNY is a great college. You have an actual campus, which bleeds into the streets of New York City. You are not disconnected from the real world when you go to school here,.At CCNY, you are right where the action is. Plus you won't have to deal with the street life since the campus isolates that. Sometimes I forget I'm in Manhattan when I'm at school since its [relatively] quiet. Plus you can't go wrong with the delis and sandwich shops around here.
Rest in peace if you're an engineering student. The administration refuses to allocate enough funds to the engineering school resulting in not enough seats for required classes and professors who can't teach or are completely unreasonable. If you're going for engineering save yourself the headache of getting screwed over constantly for 4 years and go somewhere else.
I graduated Electrical Engineering, cum laude, February 1, 1973. I travelled from my day job at Rockefeller Center to Harlem on D train for 10 years at night. Got home to Maspeth Queens at 11 PM D to E to GG. Wonderful profressers. I was blessed to get FREE college education. New York City gave me that. Another time another world.
Oh man, beware of some people in some of the offices... Some have nasty attitudes and even seem a little "off". The way students are spoken to at times is just atrocious - particularly, in the biomedical engineering office. You've been warned.
Hope to be there in a couple of years, from kbcc for Engineering and physics. In my 60's better late than never... Always wanted to come to CCNY.
Graduated in 2007. Nice school and environment cause I did not feel like I was in NYC no more. Word up to CCNY.
Hello, peopke. Today save the nickelodeon photos of ,,Girls and penguins of friends". Episode ,,School day of class work". This is Friday, OK?
Great campus and the cost of cuny schools is no match to other institution. Staff staff on campus seems to be tired from their work at times.
I just completed my M.S. in Civil Engineering and I must say that the program was excellent. I was able to take courses matching my interests (fortunately most were not in the Steinman building, which is awful). Only a few core courses were dry and taught by professors who were clearly more interested in their research. Most of the professors are great; some fantastic new ones have been hired while I was there. My only real problems have been with the registrar's office. I highly recommend the school.
A nice college to attend and study. Very good teacher and friendly staff.
Biomedical engineering program is amazing. the rest of the school, not so much. only speaking from my experience of being here for 3.5 years as an undergraduate BME student and having a ton of colleagues and friends from other departments.
its a good school with good programs. but nothing more than just good. the campus is nice so it is attractive for many. professors there are also pretty good as well. but it would not be my number choice,
The staff in financial aid are the worst. They advertise your issue to the entire waiting room. Everyone complains about them. From Undergraduates to graduates.Try your best to avoid. No matter if you greet them with a smile, they'll make a frown and tell you to enter your EMPLID #... it's just a pity.
Best education for the price, convenient, and knowledgeable professors.
City College of New York offers a lot of opportunities for students, which is impressing. The campus is surrounded by an amazing environment and wonderful people. The structure of the buildings is a form of art and so beautiful, which made you feel so relaxing. And have a strong engineering school and lots of engineering programs as well.
Hi, Me and my sister wanna study here, someone can pls tall as the price for year, thank you!
Okay school, great professors. Terrible food, old buildings, but the people make it all worth it
Very difficult computer science program, very hard. I graduated from this college well prepared to enter the work force. I was debt free, yes i will repeat : DEBT FREE! my starting salary was great, the same as those students who went to fancy schools. The only difference is that they were in debt, up to their necks. God bless the City College of NY! My job performance was so great i had a promotion in no time.
