As an out of state buyer, I was pleased with my sales experience but very unhappy with how the out-of-state processing of the title and sale was handled.
I had Cody as my salesman and had little issue finishing the deal as I went to the dealership knowing what I was purchasing, paying the internet price, a check in my hand, and was driving back. This process went smoothly. Having purchased multiple out-of-state vehicles and knowing about the BMV inspection form, I asked what all would be needed to get the Ohio title transferred to Indiana and was replied with "We'll take care of everything". I skeptically drove home in the purchased vehicle.
Edit: One side-note that stuck out to me was the gas tank. During the test drive, I asked Cody if they fill up their used vehicles as a courtesy for the sale. I was told he would make sure it would be full for my 4 hour trip home. I noticed as I was leaving it was on a 1/4 tank and when I went back inside to ask Cody again, he was leaving for the day. Another salesman instead corrected me that they only fill their used vehicles up partially and they would not honor this.
Now the timeline and where the issues have started:
I purchased the vehicle from Boardman Nissan May 22, 2019 with a temporary registration good until July 6, 2019.
However, it wasn't until June 8, 2019 (Saturday, 17 days after purchase) that I received a phone call from Cody mentioning that I would need to mail (not fax, not e-mail) an Indiana inspection document (Form 39530) to their third party company used for handling out-of-state transfers (TOC Tag & Title) in order to get the Ohio title sent off to Indiana BMV.
Once I was back in town, I had an officer complete the paperwork and mailed the paperwork off June 12th (Wednesday, 21 days after purchase). I then received a letter in the mail a few days later from TOC Tag & Title that they received my inspection and very quickly (great!) mailed off the information to Indiana BMV on June 14th (23 days after purchase) with estimated arrival June 17th. From here, it was recommended to wait 14-21 business days before contacting the BMV to register the vehicle.
It is now July 9th (48 days after purchase) and I have an expired temporary plate and am still unable to register the vehicle as the BMV is still processing titles.
My complaint with this process is this: With the sales volume and size of Boardman Nissan, it should not have taken 17 days after a sale to contact me mentioning a needed inspection form. I was being reassured consistently through the purchase process that Boardman handles many out-of-state transactions due to being in the vicinity of Pennsylvania and their department for it handles these types of sales frequently.
Instead, I'm left with an expired temporary plate, unknown status on the title, and patience running low. As mentioned previously, I've purchase a myriad of vehicles both inside and outside of Indiana and have never run into a delay of this size. Fortunately, this is not my only vehicle so the expired tag is a matter of inconvenience and not a risk of attention from the authorities.
I would recommend Boardman Nissan for the sales process and image of the dealership. I would not recommend Boardman Nissan for haste and handling of out-of-state vehicle processing as they need to work on understanding how each of their surrounding states work for title transfers.
