Staff not attentive, restaurant not busy but staff were scrambling. Didn't get greeted promptly. Mac & Cheese app was bland. Asparagus was not trimmed properly, lamb WAY over cooked. Asked for bread 3 times, never got bread. Took 30 minutes and chasing the staff down to get the check. For an established restaurant, they were extremely disorganized and amateur. Won't be back.

I don t usually write reviews, but in this case I feel one is warranted. My husband and I have gone to the Pub and had a great experience there and were looking forward to eating at the Tavern. We love history, and enjoy dining at historic restaurants. We have gone to several historic taverns and pubs up and down the east coast. The Tavern was by far the worst and a huge disappointment. And we re really not that picky. I got the chicken which was good, but the sides were terrible. My husband got the NY Strip steak, which was not only severely over cooked but not actually a strip steak. Tasted more like hamburger meat. Needless to say we sent it back. The manager assured us it would be removed from the bill however it was not, which seemed a little shady. Our server was friendly but kept disappearing on us. He offered dessert to compensate for the steak then left us waiting at least 15 minutes before he came back to take our order. By that time we just wanted to leave. It s a cool building and I m sad to say I will probably never go back.
Great historic place on Main St. The service is warm and inviting. The food came out very fast. The avocado toast with spiced honey was amazing. We liked that they had healthier takes on main stay pub food like the zucchini fries. It is also family friendly. Overall a very good choice for a nice casual dinner.
Food is consistently mediocre, overpriced, it seems to be a theme with 40 North estabishments. The only reason to really come is the ambiance and the lively bar on weekends
We were there for dinner on Saturday night in a private upstairs room. Although the staff was very friendly they were incredibly slow and forgetful. We ordered the prime rib at $39.00 each and one was so fatty that there was hardly any meat on it. We were both dissatisfied. I would definitely think twice before returning. Our poor waiter tried to be efficient but the bartender and chef were extremely slow. So sad because this used to be a wonderful place.
Extraordinary food, I had a fresh and generous side salad with champagne vinaigrette, a specials list entree was a delicious swordfish steak. Service was fast and friendly. On the expensive side.
We were a party of 3 that went there for a birthday lunch and really enjoyed our Chicken Pot pies and Sherpards pie. The portion was incredibly generous with outstanding taste. The service from our waiter was excellent! We would return.
A cozy establishment out in the woods/small town of Mendham, kept it simple by getting the turkey panini and ordering mango wings with some brooklyn lagers. The panini was delicious and the wings were actually pretty good considering not many places in New Jersey know how to make wings properly. The wings were fairly crispy (crispier the better) and had good flavor (could have had more as well). Most of my family ordered the pot pie and said it was very good so if you can handle the heavy cream it seems like a quality order. Good service and will come back more in the future.
Went there for the first time in 15 years, and I must say a terrific improvement !! I had the great thick spit roasted prime rib which was excellent, and I am a prime rib lover over 50 years,....their baked potato shocked me !!.....any other upscale restaurant you would pay 6-7 dollars ala carte just for the potato.... it came with the rib, as well as very good asparagus, I also had the "under 8" shrimp cocktail that was a meal unto itself........not a negative about the place including the excellent service
If you're ever in Chester/Mendham area, The Black House Tavern provides an incredibly well-put-together lunch!
Highlights: Their gluten free grilled shrimp and lettuce wrapped gluten free burgers were beautifully served!! I think they used half a lettuce as the wrap!!!
I've been going to The Black Horse for many years, it's always been one of my favorite places. The service and staff is always exceptional, especially Scott and Sammie!!
My wife and I visited on the coast day in January 2019. She had the grilled salmon and I had the Black Horse burger. Both meals were excellent. I had my burger on the rear side. The addition of sauted onions, soft cheese and bacon made for on of the best tasting burgers I've had in a long time.
Love the Black Horse Pub. Good food. Nice people. Terrific atmosphere. Revisited Black Horse Pub the other day. Our Marine Corps League group has lunch here regularly. Marine Corps Marathoner and Pub waitress Geraldine (Gerry) usually takes care of us as she did me the other day. Always efficient and pleasant we always look forward to seeing her. Jennifer, The Manager is the best thing to happen to The Pub in a long time. Thanks Gerry and Jen for making us feel so welcome.
Had an outdoor lunch repast for 30 people. The staff was very accommodating and took care. Sidney who is the event coordinator was extremely helpful and arranged a wonderful lunch. Food was good and priced reasonable. So glad they managed to weather the covid storm.
UPDATE: I am changing my review to 5 stars. Even though my initial experience was less than exceptional, I had no idea how exceptional the service was going to be once I left the restaurant. On top of replying to my initial review, and me following up via e-mail as requested, I received two follow-up phone calls to address my experience. John Mohan talked to me about every single piece of my experience which I shared with him in great detail. He acknowledged my concerns and invited me back to his restaurant to make it right. I was blown away by his kindness. Any restaurateur that goes that far above and beyond over a google review has certainly earned my business back.
Original Review: Ordered wings, mozzarella sticks, French Onion soup, fried zucchini, and a soda. They keep their soda warm at room temperature. They gave me a glass with ice. The ice melted before i can even drink it. So disgusting. Made the whole meal unenjoyable. Never coming back here.
Updating to 3 stars.
We sent back the mozzarella sticks because they were undercooked. We sent back the tasteless French Onion soup. We sent back the mushy fried zucchini. The reason for the increase in stars was the phenomenal service. Also the wings were amazing. The warm soda is still gross though. $3.50 for an 8oz warm glass bottle makes no sense. And no refills!!
We are at the restaurant across the courtyard. Prices are very reasonable for the quiet romantic atmosphere. Wait staff are very efficient, pleasant and quick to refill our Prosecco from the side table ice bucket. Delicious and relaxing!!!!
Great atmosphere, friendly service & greeting..food was okay at best, basically a fancy burger joint...my wife got great sandwich ..I had a so so Crab cake's with cold fries...in no hurry to go back but a solid three star option
I called twice during open hours for a takeaway. The first time they said the kitchen was under repairs the second time they said they are unable to do takeaway at that time. I had seafood there and my mussles "clams" were tiny (unacceptable if I am paying top dollar for food). I also ordered the ribs + fries and it was terrible (whatever barbecue sauce you're using is a no-go). The fries and reg burger were great. My advice: start deliveries to cater to those that do not wish to pay for valet at the restaurant or leave their front door. Change the barbecue sauce and the rib supplier. When people order a certain burger that seems meaty (I forget its name) let them be reminded that it is not the regular ground beef they are used to because I ordered a burger that I assumed was meaty and it tasted vegan.
The food is very good, great beer selection, but... they need to hand out EARPLUGS when seating people in the side room near the kitchen. GOOD LORD. We are here now, and the noise level is atrocious. We brought my parents here and we're really quite embarrassed. Shame. How about a SOLID WALL between the kitchen and the paying guests??
Got married here 3 years ago. They were very accommodating. We return every year on our anniversary. The food and wine selection is amazing. Recommend this place to everyone.
After riding and driving by for years I finally made the time to have dinner here with a friend and can sum up our experience with one word- underwhelming. I always thought it was a well established, high end, high priced, with exceptional service restaurant but this was not the case. I was totally cool and ready to wait for our table to be ready because it's a Saturday night, but was not expecting to wait over 20 minutes for a bottle of beer and glass of wine to arrive at the table after ordering it. Then when the food came we quickly realized we had no silverware or napkins, as well as I had no ketchup for the burger and fries I ordered. I asked the nice young lady who was the runner if I could have some, she said yes, and then I never saw her again. The food was eh, fries were soggy and cold but the burger was decent (hence the second star).
I understood that in this Covid world it's tough to meet the standards of the past but damn it should not be this bad. There were plenty of empty tables so the lack of services and food quality was not due to high demands. I will keep riding past, but won't stop by again.
Great food, great atmosphere and service. Loved the Impossible burger. Was there with my hiking group and they had a Santa Claus with one liners! Will definitely go back the next time we're in the area.
The service was awesome and the patio setup was welcoming and comfortable. Most of all safe. There was lighting and heat lamps. Flowers and autumn landscaping and decor everywhere. They set up a big screen also to watch the game. Very friendly. As for the food it is the Pub menu but delicious!! We had the warm southwest dip which was light and perfect. So good!! And my husband had the ribs and I had the filet. Both delicious. Good wine selection also! We will go back although probably inside with social distancing as it s getting chilly! Also John the GM was cleaning tables and stopped to talk to us. Pretty admirable!
