The Black Horse Tavern exceeds our expectations, so much so it has become our favorite Friday night get away, after our busy work week! Jenn, Dennis, Laura and Nick go above and beyond to accommodate all their guests! We are so confident in the delicious food and great service that we have brought many friends to experience the Tavern "family" with us! Highly recommend!!!

Please Note:This is a review of the Black Horse Pub, not the Black Horse Inn.
When other reviews state that this place is "the best place around" it may very well be because there is in fact, nothing else around. Not for miles-so don't be mislead. Read past the local reviews and you will find a similar theme-overpriced, nothing special. When we went there it was Mothers day and the Pub was so overcrowded that customers had to walk through the kitchen to get to their tables. The Pub is overpriced, rich people go here for mediocre food, as do out of towners.
The Pub does a better job of "putting on airs and grace" than putting value and something good on the plate. There was nothing memorable that we ate, nothing that we said "they did this very well" or "I will remember this one thing that was special". Nothing-the buffet was like bland wedding food.
I will say the servers do a very nice job and work very hard, but for 2 1/2 people for brunch it just wasn't worth the $100 we paid. Yes, it was $100 for 2 1/2 people (one persons check was split between 2 parties).
For the kind of money that they charge they simply must do better.

We had a great time! Professional and courteous staff greeted us, gave us a tour, and we enjoyed the food and drinks. The food selection was wide and the food itself was excellent - great oysters! You should consider making a reservation, although they will likely find a table even if you did not - like it was in our case.

The tavern is a favorite since the 1960's. Unfortunately the food is sub standard. The atmosphere is still nice and cozy. The food isn't too bad, but this historic location deserves better. The pub next door is newer and more popular, and probably carries the tavern financially. But the tavern is better atmosphere and deserves better food.

It's not what it used to be. Quality of ingredients has slipped. Also, dishes are poorly conceived. The weight of nostalgia hangs heavily on what used to be. Considering how far it's slipped, I think that the Dunkin' Donuts that everyone in Mendham had their undies in an uproar about is the least of their problems.

I only had soup and beer but the soup was nothing to brag about. It was expensive for what it was. Didnt taste homemade, beer was over priced. Service was outstanding. The bartender was great, very friendly and nice.

The Black Horse is an upscale pub with delicious food and reasonable prices. Everything on the Sunday brunch buffet is excellent. Drinks are strong. Free valet parking is the only option, but the valet is so good our car was waiting for us as soon as we had paid our bill.

A great little tavern in New Jersey.

We visited in a big group and the staff were very efficient. The food was fantastic and the dessert selection was to die for.

So planning Father Day dinner I Googled, oldest restaurant in NJ and The Black Horse popped up. I love good food and history :). Its an hour from where we live but we decided to go and we are so happy we did. We went to The Tavern side (Pub side is separate) and was welcomed by Jennifer. She asked how did we here about it and I told her about my Google search. She happily offered a tour and history lesson of the Tavern and Pub. She showed us all of the beautiful rooms on both floors and how George Washington and his troops stayed there as well as GW giving the owners a Black Horse and that's how they got they name. After the tour we got a booth by the windows in a gorgeous room. Drinks and appetizers were great, Prime mac and cheese and crab tatter, soooooo good. I had the 16 ounce Prime steak, my Wife had the apple pork chop, my Sun had the Prime burger and my daughter had the ribs, everything was spot on and delicious. Since it was our first time, we came from an hour long drive and it was Father day, Jennifer upgraded my Prime from 16 to 24 ounces, free of charge and gave us a box set of 2 beer glasses and 2 wine glasses! FOR FREE! So kind and thoughtful! Really made our night from beginning to end. After our meal we walked across to the Pub side and had coffee and dessert. The Pub was the original barn and has also been there for over 200 years! Kate our server was a sweet lady and again made everything a fantastic experience. If you enjoy history, beauty, friendly staff, great drinks and delicious food, then The Black Horse Tavern & Pub is the place for you.

This is our local restaurant/bar so we eat here frequently. The food is great and the ambiance is always good. The bartenders are very friendly. We have hosted a few events/parties at the Tavern and we've found it to be awesome both in service and food.

Private room upstairs was nice. Staff was nice. My issue is with the $39.00 prime rib. Terrible. I m not sure who cut it but it was cut on such an angle that the bone was 2 or 3 inches thick down to 1/4 in of meat and fat. Hardly any meat worth eating. 4 if us ordered the prime rib and only 1 got a decent cut.Very disappointing. Paid a lot of money and left hungry.

Both buildings, the Pub and the Inn, are registered historical landmarks. Great country atmosphere. Food is excellent, and the bar at the Pub is a good place to have a drink after dinner. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend.

Black Horse tavern has always been one of my favorites for dinner. All their food usually takes forever to get out but is really good in the end. The last time I went to to black horse I ordered a Mac and cheese to go. Thinking that the kitchen would do their actual job I took it home and when I opened it there was some slop. Some can call it a deconstructed chicken pot pie others could call it prison food. This is the last time I will be going to the black horse.

We visited the pub at the Black Horse Tavern on a Saturday night in late July and didn't have to wait for seating as there are no reservations at the pub. It was bustling as the evening wore on and the food was good. Raspberry sherbet tasted home made and was perfect. The other desserts offered large portions. Prices very reasonable.

I went in to the pub and had a beer, and the quesadilla appetizer. The pub had some cool decor, some nice craft beer and the food was outstanding, the quesadilla was incredible. The service was fantastic and the bartender Lexi was very friendly! Will be returning.

We made reservations for Easter brunch and still had to wait for a table for half hour They took us to the end of the room for a table of 5. The only way to get to the buffet was thru the kitchen. Mind you, we had my 86 year old mom with us and she almost slipped on the kitchen floor. They sat a family of 10 next to our table and there was not enough room to get out. The head waitress had to bring us more food and dessert from the buffet. It was a nice gesture on her part. It is very disappointing that you pay so much for their brunch and we never got to enjoy our money's worth because the room was so crowded and we could not get out of our table.

I celebrated my graduation this evening in this delicious restaurant. Well it was a enjoyable evening and the place was absolutely one of the reasons for that strong event. The waiters contributed in a lovely style, the meals were very good and my buddies were very thrilled. We shall absolutely visit again for more joyful events. thanks very much.
