From the minute I walked in, I was given a warm welcome by the reception staff. Especially a lady called Jacquie, who talked me through times for breakfast etc.
The room was lovely, nice and warm with all
amenities.
The bar staff were friendly and made the most wonderful gin cocktails!
Breakfast was good, great vegetarian options.
Finally, I left an item in the room that the house keeper had put behind reception for me and when walking out to the car, she asked me if I had picked it up.
Would definitely recommend and will look forward to staying again in the future!

I witnessed a male member of staff filming customers without consent on his mobile phone and being very unprofessional towards the general public regarding parking spaces! I was absolutely shocked at this behaviour! As someone that visits the George Hotel I will certainly never visit again if this is how customers are treated.

I am absolutely sure this is against the law!

I would have given this hotel a 6 because the staff are very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food is excellent. Unfortunately room 20, which we had, was hell on a Saturday night. The Walkabout club and bar, outside opposite the room, was so very very loud and noisy that, despite the double glazing sleep, was impossible until about 4-00 am

Don't book if you expect to sleep
We stayed in room 72 on a Saturday night and the noise from the Bar opposite was loud to say the least,, we complained in the morning and told it was out of there control, and I've since been told by the hotel its an ongoing problem? Tell me first then so I have a choice?
Its a shame as apart from no sleep before 5am,, yes 5am, it's a nice pleasant hotel, with good food and surroundings

This is a little long giving the + & - of my experience. The hotel and room were adequate and not overly expensive, hot water, AC, facilities were good (could nit pic at bathroom fittings broken), no Wi-Fi signal up in the loft :-( Breakfast was excellent, staff were very nice (apart from one barman who was replaced after an hour), drinks were fine and not expensive. Bad parts are. We held a company Christmas party there. Our party was split into two, this is clearly not good enough, we asked why to be told there were too many people for one big table, we pointed out that with a little though applied it would have been possible to seat us together to no avail, eight of our party were outcasts. Food was duly served, I had the salmon starter, this consisted of 90% lettuce, 10% Mayo 10% salmon mashed with some unidentified filler. Main course of turkey arrived, it consisted of a 1 inch square of frozen stuffing, A roast potato deep fried and dehydrated, a sausage, two wafer thin slices of reformed and frozen turkey that was totally tasteless. If you were lucky as a filler you could find a sheet of freezer paper between the "turkey" slices. (Apparently the fish was good) The vegetables arrived, like many people I do not like certain vegetables, they were frozen mixed vegetables in one large bowl!, many of us did not want or like certain vegetables so went without, desert of Christmas pudding or Cheesecake were both good. After the "meal" it was announced "coffee is in the bar, go and help yourselves". I asked to speak with management when available, this did not happen. All in I felt it was not fit for purpose and not as described. Speaking with other guests it seems "in house" meals from the restaurant is normally excellent, one can only assume the food was prepared off site. One described it as " food served to pensioners in a home" another as hospital food. A couple left at 23:00 saying e are going to find a McDonnalds, another hoped the night porter was able to get them some sandwiches. The advert reads = "Celebrate in style at one of our renowned Christmas Party Nights after a delicious 3 course meal with Christmas crackers and novelties there s a disco to ensure you have an evening to remember!". Yes it was certainly a night to remember but not for the right reasons.

Rooms clean & well appointed - the bed was very compfortable. Staff friendly, polite & helpful. There is a nice bar area with good beer, and a large dining room. The location of The George is particularly good - a very short walk to numerous restaurants & bars, and based in a pedestrian area too, so minimal traffic noise (the was some "nightlife" noise from people leaving pubs, etc late at night, but not too bad). There is hotel car parking too, at no extra cost. My only (very small) criticisms were (1) The "serve yourself" buffet brakfast was OK - but nothing special (2) all rooms were all slightly too warm - easily resolved in the bedroom by opening the window, but this then let the street noise in - but nothing major. The George is a really nice old fashioned hotel - I am planning to stay her again - recommended. PS. The bedrooms are in a rambling maze of corridors (it's an old building) with multiple stairs etc. This gives it lots of character, but may be trickly for people with mobilty issues - though there is a small elevator.

Don't stay, but want to the monthly comedy night. Well organised and great selection of acts. A good venue, with 150 odd people max. Book early, as this sells out fast. A fab night was had by our party of 6

A Best Western chain hotel. Excellent location in the centre of the town, with the real benefit of a decent sized car park. Rooms are dated, but clean and the ensuites are fine. Self service breakfast, of everything most people would want. Not double glazed, so you can hear the late night revellers. Though there weren't many. Though there is a lift, you will encounter some stairs, as it's multi levels and twisting corridors. Nice public area's and a decent bar. Staff we encountered were all good, freindly and helpful.

Carvery - don't bother. The pork was fine but crackling was chewy rather than crisp, and the veg were overheated, difficult to cut,and mediocre taste. Dessert - nothing with chocolate - but the apple pie was good.

A well appointed comfortable central hotel with parking facilities. Down side is they lack
keeping beer that is properly monitored, to taste how the brewery intended. A pint of theakstons was awful (like cold tea) & a salopian beer was warm. To make it worse when complaining they admitted both should have been taken off, does not say much for there "Modus operandi".

I would like to say thank you to the staff at The George Hotel particularly Dan and Jade for helping to make our wedding a reality. They helped us create happy memories that will be a joy to look back on and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Traditional town centre hotel with good parking, friendly helpful staff and high standards. Good value, special offers persuaded me to upgrade to a nice 4 poster bedroom and eat in at their restaurant and I was pleased to have done so. Business visit and happy to return there.

Lovely place lovely atmosphere, but sorry I have to say unfortunately, there was no staff on a Saturday evening. In the bar, there was only 1 member of staff working. There was also 3 functions scheduled for the evening, so I am guessing that is where all the staff were but they should still have more staff working in that case!

The venue was fine our nephew the groom and the bride had booked the bridal suite only to be told that it had been given to another couple who had booked it at a later date and the rest of the rooms weren't ready the bar was under staffed at all times with just one person to serve and make tea and coffee for very bad staff wise that's why I give just two stars
