This was suggested to me by a native of Baltimore and it did not disappoint! Beautiful art and wonderfully articulated artist backstories. Something any art lover does not want to miss on their next trip to the area!

Hands down, this is one of my favorite museums to visit! Every year the thematic exhibitions combine and interpret art in interesting and exciting ways. And the gift shop is not too be missed!

This place is so fun. It's not a huge museum, you won't feel like you have to rush to see everything. There is a lot of easy parking near by. Good date place, right next to the inner harbor.

One of the best museums along the East coast. The AVAM staff is incredibly friendly, helpful and organized and the museum itself is unlike anything you ve seen. Such fun! They host the annual Kinetic Sculpture Race and it s one of the BEST activities to spectate if you want a day long exploration of the area. The race goes all over Baltimore and includes sand, mud, and water obstacles. At the end there multiple awards based on the best bribe and best pit crew not just who won first in the race. AND THE MUSEUM SHOP! It has the most eclectic offerings from $1 toys and hand made jewelry to artwork from AVAM artists to things you never knew you needed in your life. If you visit Baltimore stop here, or even if you re interested in a weekend day trip it s worth it!

An absolute must see if you like quirky and thought provoking art work. This place brings the creativity and imagination of a kid and has artifacts that both kids and adults will enjoy. Extremely easy to get yourself lost in all the whimsical pieces. The admission prices are extremely reasonable and don't forget to check out the buildings nearby which house more art work.

This place is kind of off the wall (visit the magic flatulence post), weird, unpretentious and totally fascinating. Even though it's "outsider" art, the artists are very clearly very skilled and oftentimes tell really interesting stories with their work. I really enjoyed the parenthood exhibit and will be sure to return.

Having such an amazing and cutting edge museum so close to us is a great part of working in Greater Baltimore! The museum caters to visionary art (hence the name). There is so much to look at so plan to spend a few hours on the sprawling Wonderland campus. Try to go a nice day because there are lot of exhibits outside too.

Fun and eclectic museum. Most of the art is wonderful and thought provoking, but then there is also a fart exhibit which is just silly. I also really enjoy the restaurant at the top, Encantada, it has one of the best brunches in Baltimore on my opinion. The gift shop is also really fun.

A unique museum with an artistic perspective. Entrance may be gained through membership ( at a significant cost-benefit if you go more than once a year) or you can pay per visit (search "AVAM" online for current rates). Some exhibits are permanent; others have more limited showing ( 6 - 12 months) but all are fascinating. Plan to spend a few hours on your visit and make sure you visit all the buildings.

Loved that this museum is more about Baltimore and it's heritage rather than pieces from artists elsewhere. There's a little history of Baltimore in each piece! The Kinetic Sculptures were my favorite.

Over all this is a really great museum. The collection spans three buildings and has a great range of pieces. The mechanical pieces were a favorite of my group and we definitely doesn t a fair amount of time there. There is pay street parking right out back of the museum, but we were able to find free street parking on the other side of Federal Hill Park - which is also worth a visit for the view of the city.

Best museum in Maryland. Interactive art exhibits, stories that move you. Art that captures the imagination far beyond what a typical museum would ever offer. If you're local or just visiting make it a point to spend 3-4 hours here.

This museum ALWAYS has something new and fresh to offer. The "Christmas in July" showing of "Home Alone" as an outdoor movie is a great example! Part of the museum was open during the screening, and the ice cream truck added a nice touch!

this is a FANTASTIC little gem in Baltimore. it's an easy stroll from Harborplace, across from the Rusty Scupper. The museum is amazing and worth a couple hours. the real gem, however is the gift shop. It is glorious. recent purchases: pineapple sunglasses, a hat shaped like a giant birthday cake, a purse shaped like a rubber chicken, and a bobble-head Pope Francis. I was swooning. A definite Don't Miss!

One of the best places to take friends and family visiting Baltimore, it's one of the best art museums I've ever been to. It captures all of the quirkiness of the city and highlights artists you won't find anywhere else. While it can be tough to swallow the entrance fee with some of the other free museums in the city, it's well worth it. Plus it's right next door to Fed Hill which is a great place to sit and watch the harbor from. In the summers they even screen movies against the AVAM so people can watch from the hill, and the entrance fee is waived for a few hours before the movie starts.

I'm an artist and this was the worst art museum I've ever been to. Perhaps it was just a (bad) luck of the draw with the exhibits they had at the time. I'm not sure. I gave it two stars because it's an art museum. Come on, even bad art is important. Gift shop cute and very kitschy, if you're into that.

The art is eclectic, very original, often hilarious and/or disturbing. The new Big Hope show, just opened last eve, is a great example of what the AVAM does best, lots of artists- local and otherwise- from many different backgrounds. If you're local, a membership is so worth it. Plus it has the best outrageous gift stuff in the museum store you'll ever see.

This was such an amazing place. I am a little embarrassed we never visited before this trip. A totally unique experience. Wikipedia has it right when they speak of l'art brut." The art in this museum is, raw and visceral. Sometimes moving. Sometimes disturbing. It is both hard to look at and hard to look away. It does draw you in and I found myself more carefully studying each piece, each square inch of the art on display. It also speaks to the immense untapped talent in the world. I can't wait to go back.

They had some cool and unique pieces of art but I felt the cost was a little high for what we saw. Also, they were setting up for an event while we were there so there were people moving and setting up tables, chairs and tents all over the property, who were not very courteous to the paying visitors.

This is a funky museum that might not be for everyone but is fun. Some of the items are beautiful or thought provoking and others just don't make sense.
The photos are from a couple of exhibits. The first few were made with food items, grains, crackers, etc. They second one, a gentleman carved (ostrich?) eggs into beautiful design. There was a back story to it that I can't remember now but I believe the guy, at least at the start was in prison.

This is hands down my favorite museum. So many quirky things to see, it's a very fun and free spirited space to enjoy. The gift shop might as well be another exhibit, it's worth the browse even if you don't plan to buy. They also have great summer events like the kinetic sculpture race and movies on the hill.
