Went specifically to visit/shop at art bazaar Thanksgiving weekend. Lots of unusual items and bought several nice things. Looked around the building as well. Not a run of the mill art museum but enjoyed exhibits very much. Will return another day when in Bmore again.

If you are creative or simply appreciate creativity, this is a great place to visit! So much of the art work is done by people who are not necessarily prominent artists, but have used art as a way of expression.

My visit today was for the Celebration of Life for our long family friend, Orhan Baykal. It was a very beautiful service, in a lovely setting. I know in my heart Mr. Baykal would be please.

I attended this museum for a 'work event'. I would have loved to have more time in the museum but we only had 1 hour. Our tour guide Max was great, and very knowledgeable. If I ever come back to Baltimore I'd go again.

Oh man do I love this museum. It has amazing art you are not going to see anywhere else. The kids loved it. Yeah even at 6 years old! Try that MoMA! The gift shop is filled with kitsch (love Bal'mor, hon!) and also really great books. Get a membership and come back whenever you need an escape from reality or a (wildly) alternate perspective on the world.

It's a fantastic, unique art Museum. On display is art that is free of limits or restrictions. We got there kinda late and had to rush through before closing time. There was another building we didn't even get to see. I will go back as soon as I get the chance.

Museums... I've been to many and I admit to being terribly uncultured because sometimes, they just make me want to curl up in a corner somewhere and take a nap. This possibly may happen more when considering the big guns, your Louvres, your Uffizis, your Mets of the world but even a peasant like Yours, Truly, cannot get enough of the American Visionary Art Museum.

It's my understanding that the exhibits change seasonally. Regardless, what to expect here is exit/outsider art (your artistic savants who likely never went to art school). I learned that painted screens were a thing in Baltimore and I find that fascinating! Make sure you go across the courtyard, through the event space to the second building so you can see these screens outfitted on a fabricated building. There's also a circus diorama display and a giant rotating sculpture of the one and only Divine.

In the main building, my favorite (and not sure if this is rotating) was the photos of bejeweled saints' corpses-- Heavenly Bodies. I loved that the description, they liken it to "Pro-Catholic PR." I mean, it surely makes me appreciate the religion in which I was raised even more because how cool are bedazzled skeletons, right?

Besides the exhibits, they have a bunch of short documentaries in which you get to "meet" the artists and see where they're coming from.

Pro Tip: Do NOT miss the vintage Pez display on the top floor of the main building (who doesn't love Pez dispensers?!) Beware, that lovely spiraling staircase may give you vertigo, so take the elevator up! Yay, Pez!! There really is something for everyone here.

I'm an artist and an art teacher and this is the best museum ever! I usually do not want to read in at any art show, but this place has some intriguing info to read about the artists. Be sure to visit the fun gift shop.

A very fun and relatable art museum. No stuffy boring exhibits here. The art grabs you and sucks you right in. The art is in 2 buildings - 3 floors in one, 2 floors the other, both have either stairs or elevators. Very modern & well kept up, very clean. The art ranges from sculpture and embroidery to oil. It is located about a block south of the south end of the inner harbor. It costs $15 for an adult. Also, the gift shop is especially nice for kids since they have lots of fun stuff priced at 25 cents. One mom, while I was there, gave her 5 year old a budget of 1 dollar. The gears in that kid's brain were really spinning as he poured over the selections that would net him the best mix of stuff!

Only the world's most amazing Outsider art museum. Where to begin? The design of the main building is all curvlinear with no hard angles- any where. The permanent exhibit is worth revisiting yearly if not more. The occasional exhibits are constructed around a theme and the art is always mind-blowing in its originality. This is a one of a kind museum. I have been to only one other Outsider art museum- The Art Brut Museum - and AVAM feels even more magical. That might be the most apt description of this museum- pure magic.

Truly an adventurous journey into an unexpected universe. Some of the works are astounding, others perhaps kitschy, but all are interesting and immerse the senses. An art museum for people who would like to rediscover the truly extraordinary boundaries of artistic expression. Also notable are the detailed and well-written backgrounders on each artist's life, including struggles and triumphs in the human journey of self-discovery. A must-see.

Wandered in here from Federal Hill Park and paid a reasonable entrance fee. It could've been easy to walk right past the service desk without paying since it looked like that's what others were doing. But, there are two buildings the entrance fee gives you access to and you get your hand stamped so you can wander between them as you'd like.

Was amazed to see Alex Grey's work featured right at the start! Genius.

Make sure you carefully visit every corner, every wall, every staircase or you might miss something.

A beautiful and surreal collection of art, which is extremely well curated. The museum does an excellent job of explaining about the artists and their work, while still allowing the peices to speak for themselves.

Curated to exhibit contemporary art as a celebration of the human spirit and soul.
Restored my faith in the power of contemporary art to transform the way we see the world.

This museum is:
The anti D.I.A.
The anti MOMA
The anti Sothebys
The anti Charles Saatchi
The anti 1% art scene dominated by Hedge Fund operators and Russian criminal billionaires (although seeing Damien Hirst separating them from their money is kinda fun).

Makes Baltimore proud.

I've been to the Louvre, Prado, National Gallery, Tate, Guggenheim, Metropolitan, MOMA, Stedelijek, Rijksmuseum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and more and still rate The Museum of American Visionary Arts as one of my favorites. Viewing and interacting with artwork by untrained people who are/were socially and culturally out of the mainstream and art world is a wonderful treat. And visit the gift shop which is another fun experience.

The American Visionary Art Museum is a wonderful, unorthodox & eclectic place! So much to see and we had so little time. We hope to return in the future to see what we missed! Wonderful place!

Some of the pieces were interesting, but most of the pieces simply relied on the story of the artist carrying bad art. Not many pieces stood on their own merit and left something to be desired.

I love this museum and return to it again and again --- almost always with a grandchild 10 or younger. If ever there was a place to feast your eyes on the fantastic and wonderful, this is it. Beautiful, expressive art, much of it unfiltered by any intellectual "meaning," allowing the artist to express him or herself directly through the materials at hand. And what amazing material they are! Definitely worth a detour. Not to be missed.

This place is simply amazing! I wasn't always comfortable with what I was viewing, but art isn't supposed to be nice it is supposed to provoke, inspire and enlighten. I will be back... and now the Kinetic Sculpture Race is on my calendar for next May!
