Such a fun, wacky, inspiring museum showing cool art from people who were not formally trained. Some of the artists are homeless or institutionalized. The gift shop is amazing and fun to look through for a good hour!

Really amazing art museum. You definitely need a couple hours to enjoy everything. If you are lucky you may meet some of the artists whose work are displayed here. I would definitely recommend this to any of my friends.

My family and I went here yesterday, and it is one of the most fun and offbeat places we've been. What a great museum! It is whimsical, inspiring, and chock full with gorgeous stuff to look at that also expands your mind. The gift shop is filled with crazy stuff that made me feel like I was in an alternative universe. It seems like they have a lot of new exhibitions with some frequency, so we absolutely plan to come back.

Stopped in on a hot day to enjoy the a/c and take in the unique art pieces. Be sure to check out both buildings! Friendly staff in the gift shop. Will return again when we have some free time in Baltimore.

I really enjoyed this museum located at the base of Federal Hill (the quieter side of Baltimore's Inner Harbor). The art within is engaging, poignant and unique, I kept wondering what surprises would be around the corner on each of its 3 floors and adjacent buildings. At the museum's entrance I was confronted with an installation dealing with parenthood which wrapped around the wall. As a parent myself, (probably haven't done the best job at being a parent either!) I was faced with thoughts and experiences from others that made me question my own performance as a parent. That one really created a strong emotional reaction in me but then again isn't that the ultimate goal of true art? Shouldn't it be heartfelt when created by the artist and should that sentiment not carry over to the artist's audience? Another installation that caught my attention and will probably linger in my memory for longer than it should was a piece that consisted of a model house showing the placement of the murdered family members of one murderer who decided the world was too evil and he would be the hero by killing all his family to save them from this horrible world! There they lay in what at first glance looks like a doll house, each family member as the police found them shot to death.

This museum is unlike any other in the world. The fine to enter is ~$20 if I remember correctly, but the exhibits and building itself are spectacles made of very atypical media. I would also recommend checking out the neighborhood since there are many other unusual art pieces

This place is very visually striking. When I came here, I actually missed the cut off time for the last entrance. So I just ended up walking around the area and still had a great time. There are several things to see outside of the museum itself and the exterior definitely is a piece of art in itself. Will make sure that I come back here again so I can come back inside next time.

The art in this place is called "visionary" for a reason. Its Not like any "regular" art museum. The level of creativity and use of media in each piece or installation is incredible. This is definitely a place to avoid if you onlyt have a short time for a quick walk through. A lot of fun pieces here, but a great deal of social commentary and reflections on human interaction as well. Great for kids and adults.

The American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore had a variety of collections with interesting pieces. There was an altering mirror that was nice to take funny pictures, they have a great view on the top floor (don t take pictures with flash!!) The gift shop had to be my favorite spot with interesting items like funky sunglasses and coasters that said explicitly funny things.

My favorite museum of outsider art.
The exhibits often shift my perspective and I am intrigued by the themes.
I haven't always found the exhibits/themes "easy", yet always provocative.
And, the extra events are so much fun!

This is not your typical art museum. All of the artists are self-taught and have a story. The museum has a theme, and then some standing exhibits. The theme right now was parenting. Some of the stories were incredible - sad, overcoming, unbelievable.... but set the tone for the art. I am not an art aficiando as far as museums, but I enjoyed about 2 hours of this. We got 50% off admission with a Groupon and coupon so worth it. Neat stop. Would not plan a trip around it, but cool for a few hours if in the area.

Fun for both my very knowledgeable graphic designer sister and my very unartistic self. Learn history, see beauty, and experience new perspectives, different points of view, and relevant new statement exhibits.

It's a interesting local museum for arts in Maryland.
However, the quality of the arts is not very high; boarding on amateur level.
Be here with open mind and just chill, not for enjoying world class arts.

An impressively large but still quirky establishment in Baltimore. It's a must-see if you like folk art, but even if you don't really like it that much, it's still worth a visit at least once. If you HATE folk art, this is not the place for you.
If you go, don't miss the annex outside the main museum. It has a really cool collection of mechanical automatons and a gigantic, rotating Divine.
The upstairs of the museum has a cafe which looked nice but I didn't go in.
The gift shop is one of the more entertaining gift shops I've ever been in. It has an X-rated section, so keep an eye on your kids.

CLOSED ON MONDAYS! But the place is quite a sight to admire. There is plenty to see outside the museum and so much to discover inside. It is a shame that photography is discouraged.

Really quirky but interesting. Great opportunities for pictures. Three buildings to go through and a sculpture garden, but the second building looked like a dance floor when we were there.
Definitely go downstairs to the bathrooms for the fart post.

Amazing curation of Intuitive Art. The permanent exhibits are mesmerizing. Mystery Exhibit quite thought provoking. Whimsy abounds, especially in the Sculpture Garden. Many many moments of great beauty, mixed with healthy doses of laughter & even a few tears. The perfect Art experience, in my opinion. You should treat yourself, I believe...

This museum surprised me in its impactful, stunning art. Visually pleasing and with themes and famous quotes that add an extra layer of context, the modern art here was very memorable. Free parking on the streets close by to avoid paying, and the museum is located next to a park that provides a great view over the harbor.

Don't let the 90s website fool you, this place is really fun. They offer short guided tours that show a quick glimpse into all the history present in the modern pieces. Surprised by all of the glass sculptures and the gift shop is worth spending 30 minutes in by itself! Lots of cool trinkets that are reasonably priced.

This place is eclectic and eccentric. It's not my cup of tea, but some people would love it. It just depends on your taste in art. I prefer French impressionism. The building itself was probably my favorite part thanks to the mosaics all over the outside.

It's a neat little museum, but it's pretty small for the $16 adult and $12 child admissions they charge. I'd recommend going on one of the free admission days either through the city or a credit card. For free, it's definitely worth it.

This is one of the most interesting museums you will ever go to. An entire museum devoted to untrained artists who have just been compelled to make art for one reason or another. Many of the works are done by people who have dealt with and suffered from mental health issues, and art was either an outlet or coping mechanism. The works in the permanent collection on display were done with an incredible amount of love and obsession. Their changing exhibitions also touch on one point or another - and I've seen a great one on alien abduction years ago.
The museum opens people's eyes to who is allowed to make art and what we call art. The building itself is also beautiful and crazy - a true reflection of the Baltimore art world. Colorful, random, and just a trip. I love this place and try and visit every time I am in Baltimore.
